Heartbroken and stranded in a strange land with her friend Simon, she has no home to go back to, and enemies still hunting her.
But Seph has one mission—rescue Alex, the man she loves, and defeat the demon prince who took him.
As she and Simon travel the worlds in search of Alex, they encounter a complex web of foes and unexpected allies, each with their own agendas and secrets. Soon, Seph discovers that her quest is entangled with forces much greater and more sinister than she could have imagined.
The journey to save Alex may reveal more about her true strength—and her darkest fears—than she ever expected.
Will Seph save the man she loves, or will her demons take her first?
The Book of Shadows is the second installment in The Graveborn Series, a contemporary/portal fantasy romance that explores love, betrayal, sacrifice, and how far one woman will go to claim her power.
R.G. Wesley is a lifelong fantasy lover. When not writing, she enjoys running very slowly and haunting her local cemeteries, not necessarily in that order. You can find her on instagram @r.g.wesleywrites, or visit her poorly designed website, rgwesleywrites.com.
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to review this arc.
The Book of Shadows picks up right where The Strange Hour left off, and oh boy, R.G. Wesley doesn’t hold back. This second installment in the Graveborn series hits a little harder, digs a little deeper, and makes you feel everything.
Seph, who began the series as a strong and grounded protagonist, now finds herself spiraling as she deals with the guilt and grief of losing Alex. What I appreciated here is how human she becomes. Her decisions might be reckless, but they’re driven by something real: love and desperation. It’s not recklessness for the sake of drama; it’s a girl willing to risk it all to bring someone she loves back. Watching her outer shell crack to reveal that deep vulnerability made me love her even more.
One of the highlights of this book for me was her evolving relationship with Simon (who we meet in Book 1). Their dynamic just works. It feels more organic, more emotionally raw, and honestly? I think he's good for her. (Sorry, Alex!) Don’t get me wrong, I still love Alex, but Simon and Seph have this natural rhythm that makes their bond feel earned. Of course, she does make her choice... but I won’t spoil that. 😉
The new cast of characters that joins Seph on her journey is fantastic, and yes—there is one in particular that had me crying right at the start. R.G. Wesley knows how to deliver an emotional gut punch when you least expect it. I also loved the way Seph and Bri’s reunion was handled. It wasn’t wrapped up in a perfect little bow. They had to relearn how to be in each other’s lives, which felt incredibly real and refreshing.
And let’s talk about that ending: the traps, the trials, the tension, it had me absolutely glued to the page. The stakes felt high, the pacing was tight, and the final scenes were everything I wanted from a fantasy-adventure climax.
This was an emotional, magical, and utterly compelling sequel. I cannot wait for book three.
“Grief is for the living, my dear. It is for anyone who loves deeply, and loses. It is a part of life if you’re really living it.”
Another AMAZINGGGG read by one of my new favorite authors! R.G. Wesley hit this spooky gothic-esque romantasy sequel out of the ballpark! Picking up pretty much right where The Strange Hour left off, being thrown right back into Seph’s story was so exciting (and also stressful) and I was eager to find out what’ll happen after that (traumatizing) ending of the first book.
The Book of Shadows felt different from the Strange Hour, but in an excellent way. It was much more plot-heavy, and it made me feel like I was right there on this whole long journey with Seph. I was laughing, crying, stressing, and swooning alongside everyone else, and that’s always a sure-fire way to get me to fall in love with a story.
Although, just like I was with The Strange Hour, The Book of Shadows was so ultimately atmospheric with its descriptions, so detailed, and overall very easy to read + follow along with everything going on — especially with the adventures the characters go on. There was no part of the story that I didn’t have my full attention on the text and felt deeply immersed in the world. The same characters from book one, even the new faces — especially folly!!!, they’re all so relatable and just great characters to read — everything between admirable and literally would do anything to keep their family safe. I adored the gothic & fantastical elements of the entire story all the while maintaining its urban fantasy immersive-ness just like I did with book one. I’m itching for more after THIS ending because what the heck just happened???
R.G. is a master at storytelling and character development and I’m only ever too eager to read more of their things and just cheer her on constantly for all the hard work she puts into writing and developing her characters and their stories SO well!
What to expect in The Book of Shadows: 🖤 I’ll find you in every world 🖤 magic & portals 🖤 found family 🖤 magical & ancient objects 🖤 adventures + quests 🖤 she saves him 🖤 minor love triangle 🖤 soulmates
“You are stronger than your fears.” He pulled away, looking me in the eye. “You were made for the light, Persephone. And for the dark. Do not be afraid to look into your shadows. They cannot harm you.”
Thank you to R.G. for letting me be a part of this release and allowing me to read an arc copy and squeal about this book with you in your dm’s! Everyone needs to go read this series asap!
For anyone who has read Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, particularly The Subtle Knife, this book will feel derivative. Like Lyra’s alethiometer, Seph is gifted a mechanical and magical device that will help her locate what she desires. Like Lyra, Seph has a kind-hearted moral and ethical friend who helps keep her propensity for danger in check (I personally hope he’s end game to balance the instalust that was Alex but I won’t stick around to find out). Like Lyra, Seph portals through new and interesting worlds and is trying to take down corrupt seraphim and find Alex. Like Lyra, Seph has a morally gray father who seems to want to do what’s right for her by abandonment and then when he does come back, he isn’t particularly helpful.
Unlike Pullman, however, there is no deeper meaning or literary critique on Milton or Dante. Rather, we follow a particularly unlikeable character while she blunders and somehow easily goes from world to world, speaking the language, having currency, receiving help, and more with ease. She ignores pretty much everything anyone says to her and tries to handle everything by leeching magic from others. By the time the plot finally got tricky—in a world where she is locating an object for a demon—I lost interest. It had all been sort of too easy and she was so unlikeable that I decided enough was enough.
This is the second book in the series with the first being The Strange Hour. We get to continue on with Sephs story. She naturally is still being hunted. Filling all alone with no place to call home, she is consistently battling her own internal demons.
However on this journey we also find that true friendships are forged. I love seeing Seph and Simon grow closer together.
The author definitely knows how to develop characters. That really makes you connect with them and feel every emotion that they are feeling. In addition, the world building is descriptive enough. That I could picture it all in my head. The pace of this book was a little slower than the first book but I actually enjoyed that because I felt like I really invested myself in the characters and what was happening to them and around them. Just like the first book this was a five out of five stars for me.
Content Warning: The Book of Shadows contains the following: Graphic violence Death Explicit sexual content References to off-page sexual assault Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, grief, self harm, and suicidal ideation References to forced birth Animal death (in context of hunting for meat. The dog doesn’t die, don’t worry) References to miscarriage/fertility issues
R. G. Wesley did it again! This book started where the last book ended and you don’t miss one beat. The world building is just as phenomenal. I’m still fascinated by the magic system. I appreciated the mental struggles the fmc went through, as that was extremely relatable. I love that I’m seeing mental health being represented more in literature, and R. G. Wesley does it well.
I did find that this book had a slower pace than the first, but it didn’t really impact my rating of this review. I still think this book was very well written and would recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy and sci-fi.
If you’re a Supernatural or Buffy fan, then you definitely need to read this. This book would be right up your alley!
This story was wild! First off, I have a newfound LOVE for Simon. I absolutely adore the fact that he and Seph get a book together, and we get to learn so much more about his personality.
The rollercoaster ride that is the final 20% of this is perfect for adrenaline junkies. I didn't see the ending coming, and I cannot wait for the next book.
Definitely a unique story that you'll want to dive into.
Book 2 of the Graveborn series was much slower paced than the first. We get a bit of world building and get more information on Seph and the Guardians.
I did find it a little harder to connect with this story but it’s an excellent portrayal of “doubting yourself ruins your potential” and “doing things the easy way is only cheating yourself”.
Poor Simon. The Tortured artist, literally. He gets the rough end of the stick through this whole book.
There are some surprising reunions and some hard choices. And we are kicked in the shin with a cliffhanger…
Thank you for allowing me to continue with this journey as an ARC reader
wow this book jumped in right where we left off. it was a journey, to say the least. i loved Seph getting closer to Simon and feeling the tension! i’m torn between loving Alex and falling for Simon this time around. there was heartbreak, new found family, a training arc.. this second book really stepped up to the challenge after the first. the twists and turns, betrayal.. everything was so good. i was locked in and on the edge of my seat. and the ending… boy am i itching to get the third book😭 i can’t believe this is the second book the author has written?? its so good. i’m so grateful to have been given this arc, and i look forward to reading on!

**REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS**
R.G. Wesley takes readers on another whirlwind adventure in The Book of Shadows, the second installment in The Graveborn Series. Picking up where The Strange Hour left off, we find Seph Hart grappling with profound loss and an unyielding determination to rescue Alex, the man she loves, from the clutches of a demon prince. Her journey, accompanied by her steadfast friend Simon, throws them into a sprawling tapestry of worlds, each with its peculiar inhabitants and perilous challenges.
Wesley’s ability to craft vivid imagery and engaging dialogue shines in Wesley’s writing. Descriptions like the “They wrenched my hands behind me, gripping my wrists so hard bone ground against bone” pull you directly into Seph’s experiences. The dialogue, often sharp and witty, truly brings the diverse cast of characters to life. Simon, loyal and full of humor, provides essential balance to Seph’s intense focus. His observations, such as “Oy, mate. Rise and shine” when trying to rouse Alex, add a touch of levity to the high-stakes narrative.
Seph herself is a character who elicits strong reactions. Her single-minded devotion to Alex is her greatest strength and, at times, her most frustrating flaw. While her resolve is admirable, her impulsiveness and tendency to disregard warnings from those who care about her can be exasperating. Characters like Gamori and Val often provide much-needed reality checks, with lines like “Do not behave like a petulant child. It does not become you” or “You’re running away again?” he inner struggle Seph faces, including her acceptance of her emerging powers and the sacrifices she must make, is a central theme that resonates throughout the book. The moment where she finally surrenders and feels a “whisper from behind the obsidian door that was the gateway to my power” is a powerful and long-awaited breakthrough.
While the action is relentless and the stakes are consistently high, the constant portal-hopping and the introduction of a vast array of new creatures and worlds can sometimes feel overwhelming. It occasionally creates a sense of detachment from the core mission, as new elements are introduced before previous ones are fully explored. However, this expansive world-building also highlights Wesley’s imaginative prowess, keeping the reader on their toes with unexpected twists and turns, such as the revelation of Bri as “Fae nobility.”
Despite minor complexities in keeping track of all the new elements, The Book of Shadows is an undeniably entertaining read. Wesley masterfully blends exciting action sequences with genuinely tender and passionate moments, ensuring that the emotional core of Seph’s journey remains front and center. The ending leaves you with tantalizing questions, setting the stage for what promises to be an explosive continuation of The Graveborn Series.
For a similar blend of Urban/Portal Fantasy Romance with strong female leads and intense emotional journeys:
• The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare: This series is explicitly mentioned in your review as having familiar themes to The Graveborn Series. If you haven’t read it, you’ll find a similar urban fantasy setting with demon hunting, angelic lore, complex relationships, and plenty of action and emotional stakes. It has a strong emotional core and definitely leaves you with cliffhangers.
• From Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L. Armentrout: This highly popular series features a strong, evolving heroine, a compelling love interest, a mix of fantasy creatures, and a fast-paced, action-packed plot with plenty of twists and emotional intensity. Armentrout is known for her cliffhangers!
• A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas: Another hugely popular fantasy romance series. While it leans more heavily into high fantasy and fae lore, it delivers on whirlwind adventures, vivid descriptions, witty banter, a strong emotional core, and plenty of passion and action. Maas is a master of cliffhangers and keeping readers hooked.
For expansive world-building, intricate plots, and unexpected twists:
• The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson: If you’re looking for truly epic, intricate world-building with unique magic systems, deep character development, and numerous surprising revelations, Sanderson is your go-to author. While the romance elements are slower burn and less central than in The Book of Shadows, the emotional journeys are profound, and the action sequences are breathtaking.
• The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher: This urban fantasy series features a wizard private investigator in modern-day Chicago. It’s known for its witty dialogue, fast-paced action, and increasingly complex magical world. Harry Dresden’s sarcastic narration and the array of supernatural beings he encounters make for a very engaging read.
For sharp, witty dialogue and dynamic character relationships with a good counterbalance:
• The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle) by Maggie Stiefvater: This young adult urban fantasy series focuses on a psychic’s daughter and a group of privileged boys searching for a legendary Welsh king. It’s renowned for its lyrical prose, atmospheric setting, and incredibly sharp, witty dialogue among its ensemble cast, particularly the banter between the main characters. While the romance is present, it’s more subtle and slow-burn.
• Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones: A charming and whimsical fantasy with delightful characters and truly unique magic. The dialogue is often humorous and clever, and the relationships, particularly between Sophie and Howl, are dynamic and engaging, evolving from witty banter to something much deeper. For exciting action sequences with tender and passionate moments:
• Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas: Before ACOTAR, Maas gave us Celaena Sardothien, an assassin who enters a deadly competition. This series is full of thrilling action, intense emotional moments, and passionate romance, all set within a rich fantasy world.
• Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder: This fantasy novel features a strong protagonist forced to become a food taster for the commander of a kingdom. It combines political intrigue, unexpected dangers, a simmering romance, and a heroine who undergoes significant internal growth and faces tough choices.

I had the privilege of being an ARC reader for The Book of Shadows. This book was a A WILD ride! I was so anxious with what was going to come next for Seph and her sidekicks. This story picks up immediately after the first book, The Strange Hour, where Seph and crew are separated and she has Simon with her. They basically spend the next few months looking for Alex and Seph finding herself again, all the while hiding from everyone (the bad guys). They meet some really scary creatures. But also some really awesome new characters- especially Folly (he’s my favorite 😍) Vesper, Indigo, and Leander (even with his pig headedness) are awesome too. I liked the friendship between Simon and Seph and I hope he finds a love as strong at Seph and Alex someday. He deserves it. The worlds they encountered were so interesting and of course the time they spent in the last world was absolutely amazing. This book ends on a cliffhanger about as significant as the first book and you definitely need to brace yourself. Again, check the trigger warnings- she be DARK once again. Especially the utter emotional torment poor Seph goes through. The support she gets and the work she does on herself is quite notable and I definitely admire her for the effort and the results she does get in the end. She still has a long way to go on this journey and no one is safe. There is some closure on a few things from the first book, but there is still much that is unresolved. I’m excited for the next installment and I hope hope hope we get that HEA!

….Well if I don’t feel like I’ve just been to hell and back in the best way possible! 😉This sequel sucked me right in from the get go and I feel like it’s better than the first book. I couldn’t put it down! This was one where I felt like I was watching a movie and the subtle humor throughout was *chef’s kiss*! The character arc *chef’s kiss*. The descriptions of pain and the character interactions *chef’s kiss*. Pacing…*chef’s kiss* Sure while Seph is giving “not like other girls” vibes, it does not feel overly cliche and is believable for some reason.
As a former spouse of an addict, I appreciated the commentary on addiction and how loved ones of an addict often get mown over by their behavior.
My only criticism is that I feel like there were several plot points that could’ve been “tightened up a bit”/that were redundant like: how many times are we going to see Simon get beat to all hell, poor fella! We could’ve seen a bit more of a strain on he and Seph’s relationship and more angst about the nature of things between them.
Speaking of Simon….you can draw me like one of your French girls! 👀 Holla at ya girl! 🙋♀️
Thanks R.G. for taking me on an adventure I didn’t know I needed!
If you haven't picked up these books yet, get ready for a wild ride!!
In Book One, we meet Seph Hart. She is just going through the motions of life working at a law firm for a horrible boss. She loves to stay at home reading books and likes the occasional walk through the local graveyard. She knows it can be seen as weird, but she feels called to it, and it eases the stress of life.
She is soon thrown into a whole paranormal world. The father she never knew had magic and passed it down to her. She meets a great group of friends and even a special man named Alex. Strong, smart, and incredibly handsome, he is chosen to help her hone her magical abilities.
Unfortunately, the prince of a demon realm decides that he is going to take Seph, and during the battle, she loses everything.
Now, in Book Two, you are thrown back into Seph's world as her and her friend Simon try to stay alive while being hunted by the demon.
Will they be able to stay safe and hidden, or will their constant realm hopping be able to keep them away from those hunting them?
BOOK 2 picks up right where the first book left off, and it does not disappoint. The world-building expands beautifully—each new realm they travel to is rich with detail, magic, and mystery. I was completely immersed in the vivid descriptions and the growing complexity of this universe. Simon and Seph's friendship continues to be the heart of the story, grounding all the chaos and wonder around them. I loved seeing their bond deepen through every challenge they faced. The introduction of new characters and creatures (hello, demons 😳) adds even more depth and intrigue. Each one feels purposeful, adding layers to the plot and raising the stakes. We also get to learn so much more about Seph’s destiny—her purpose becomes clearer in a way that had me hooked. There were so many edge-of-your-seat moments that had me literally biting my nails, unsure of what was coming next. The tension, the twists, the magic—it was all so well done. This book is just as strong as the first, if not better. I’m already counting down the days until the next one!
Thank you R.G. Wesley for the opportunity to read this spectacular book early!
Where to start? The entire book was an adventure. Be it dark and gloomy or bright and semi-happy, I couldn't put it down. I loved all the characters, but Seph's journey had my heart from book 1. This book was no different. She's once again been drug through the mud, albeit kicking and screaming, the girl is a champion. My heart broke, I won't tell you why as that's a spoiler 😕 but I seriously need to know how this series ends. The magic system still blows me away! The storyline is incredible and the hours fell away as I dived headfirst into the mystery, action, and adventure of finding Alex. I love the dynamic between Seph and Simon and the slow burn between them is delicious. I highly recommend this series to all fantasy readers. If you haven't grabbed The Strange Hour yet, you should get it now!
The Book of Shadows did not disappoint! I am so grateful to be able to have read and advanced copy of this story.
We continue Sephs story as she and Simon try to make their way back to… well. Some place safe.
Seph is riddled with guilt and shame and is broken hearted with the events that took place at the end of book one, the strange hour. She blames herself for everything bad that has happened. As we journey with her in her quest to get back to Alex, we get to see a massive character arc for her as well as a potential relationship building with Simon.
She has grown so much throughout this story and when that moment comes in which she allows the proverbial dam to break, it’s the most heart wrenchingly beautiful thing to read.
The last 100 pages had me glued to the page and I cannot WAIT until the third book!
I am voluntarily writing this review, I did recieve this book as a arc reader.
That being said, I'm obsessed with this series. I wouldn't even know how to begin to build one world, and Wesley builds MANY. I have already referenced this as my new favorite series. It's definitely got the fated romance "I'll love you in every world" type of love. Not only that but the friendships are some of the most beautiful I've read. The main character's mental struggles are very relatable, and made me feel very seen. I love that this fmc isn't just a typical heroine, she has internal battles, and really has to work at her mental health. The worlds it's written in are very vivid and well-written, and once again the magic is original and epic. I truly can't wait to see what happens in the third book.
I received this book as an ARC reader and it destroyed me in the best way possible. I had the full range of emotions reading this book. I bounced from being absolutely outraged, to laughing hysterically, to sobbing uncontrollably. These characters are written so vividly that you can't help but be invested in their stories.
This series is a wonderfully unique story amongst popular fantasy books right now. I can't say enough good things about this book. R.G Wesley is an incredible fantasy writer. Her skills in world building are unmatched. Combined with the characters that she is able to develop and it is impossible not to love these books.
I can't wait for book 3. I will be desperately waiting for news of it's release because I have to know where these characters go from here.
Another 5 star read from RG Wesley. I was expecting greatness and it was served HOT! I love the LGBTQ rep in this series. I love the new characters and the way they mesh perfectly with the characters from book 1. I stand by my statement that the author toes the line between over description and perfection so beautifully. Reading these is like watching a movie in my head. The scenes are painted in a way that just captivates you. I cannot wait for book 3.
If you thought Book 1 The Stange Hour was a rollercoaster ride like I did hold onto your lap bar because The Book Of Shadows is even more intense! You will feel every emotion and be stunned at the end! The world building in this book is incredible just like Book 1 but even more son because we see so many worlds in this one that its crazy how much each one stands out in my mind! Buckle up and enjoy the ride I know I did and I will be very impatiently awaiting the next book!
This was a great second book. It picks up right after The Strange Hour. There was so much that happened in this book! travel to different worlds, fights, demons, found family, almost a love triangle, and so much more. I really enjoyed the descriptions of all of the different worlds. I could picture what they looked like in my mind. I enjoyed the introduction of some new side characters and catching up with some old ones. The cliffhanger at the end!?! Can't wait for book 3!!
Thank you for the opportunity to review this ARC. This is the second book of the Lightbringer series, and I must say I enjoyed it as much as the first. I enjoyed the ride and watching Seph continue to grow and develop as a character and as a lightbringer. I also can appreciate the development of feelings between her and Simon, whilst on her journey to find Alex. I’m excited to see where the third book will take us and I am along for that ride.
Man I love a broken woman clawing her way back to strength /g
Absolutely loved this book! I would normally take issue with separating the main characters but I think it works in this one. Seph got to grow on her own and I don’t know if she would have done that without her need to find Alex. And the parallels! I can’t say more without spoilers but I am VERY interested in where this is going.
Book 2 of the Graveborn series did not disappoint! It’s a little slower paced than book 1 but you still get the great world building as well as relationship building and the magic system! I also loved the mental health rep! I can’t wait for book 3!
Go give this series a read you will not be disappointed!
Book one was amazing and ended in a great cliffhanger. Book two started right up. The twists and turns, the ups and downs of this book had me at the edge she of my seat. Seph trying to find Alex and getting closer to Simmon. Totally trying to figure out what to do, what to think. Loved every bit of this book. It is a must read!!
This sequel leans more into full fantasy than the romantasy focus of the first book, with rich world-building, evolving relationships, and meaningful exploration of mental health. The first half moves a bit slower, but the second half takes off—leading to a wicked cliffhanger that left me eager for the next book. A thoughtful and imaginative read from a fantastic indie author.
Very good book. It was well written, and even not reading the first book (The strange hour), I was not lost. The author did a good job with the story. It does end on a cliff hanger, and I am ready for book #3.
I absolutely adore the writing in these books and have had this one preordered since I learned it was coming out! Thank you for allowing me to read your ARC 🖤
