”We are Legacies. People fear us for a reason, and I wouldn’t let a Prescott dictate my future. Not again. Not ever.”

thank you so much to grey’s promotion and the author for providing me an early copy.

read this if you like:
🖤 bully romance
🖤 dark college setting
🖤 enemies to lovers
🖤 slow burn
🖤 forced proximity

“Make me forget about you, Prescott. Relieve me of this burden. Leave Altair.”

what the hell? i need book 2 like yesterday! i have so many questions…
i ate this up in less than 24h.
this setting reminds me of wednesday (the netflix series)—dark and gothic college, with black and white uniforms, strange people… and the vibes remind me of zodiac academy—bullies who needs to protect their legacy from the new arrival at altair college.
the pace is steady, the story is intriguing, the writing is simple. overall, it’s an easy but fun and intriguing read.
oh, and it’s multiple povs!

╰┈➤ the book follows alexandra prescott, the new altair college student and daughter of a legacy family, whose arrival is met with hostility from the legacy families. bishop, sylvester and camden are determined to make her leave, and they would do anything to get the revenge that they are owed after alex’s father betrayed their families during the final game.

i really enjoyed this book, but i have complaints.
1) alex loves botany, but we have 0 botany moments, except for a couple of moments with dolores. i would’ve love to know more about her passion.

2) the book is too short!! i needed MORE. i have so many questions, because many things were left unsaid. i think the author did it on purpose, because the whole book is shrouded in mystery.
i want to know more about the boys background and families; i want to know more about alex’s mom, but especially about what on earth did her father do?
also, who’s the love interest?👹 (i secretly hope it’s bishop because i don’t trust blondies)
and when does book 2 come out?

3) my final complaint: can we find better girlfriends for alex in book 2? please please please! 🙏🏼 i still have to recover from you-know-who’s betrayal (which i did see coming, but it hurt nonetheless)

overall, i definitely recommend this book, but only if you like the tropes!💋

This book? Absolutely unputdownable. I devoured it!

This book is Zodiac Academy but with a gothic vibe —bullies protecting their throne, a new arrival shaking things up, and tension so thick you could cut it with a knife. The pacing was solid, the multiple POVs kept things interesting (I’m a lover of multiple POVs), and the writing was easy to digest.

We follow Alexandra Prescott, the newest student at Altair College and the daughter of a legacy family. But her arrival? Far from celebrated. Bishop, Sylvester, Camden, and Sutton are out for blood, determined to make her pay for her father’s betrayal during the final game. They’ll do whatever it takes to make her leave.

If you love mystery, betrayal, and an elite, gothic setting, this needs to be on your TBR. I am not okay after that ending!!! I need the next book ASAPPPP!!!

this book was... okay. not good not bad just okay.

this isn't my first time reading a book by this author and i was so excited to read this book because her other pieces of work was so fun and interesting but i think that it's safe to say that this book was very bland compared to her other books and honestly it didn't feel like she stepped out of the highschool setting at all. these are a bunch of 21 year olds acting like children and they constantly pissed me off with every page I turned to.

i like the concept but the execution was off. however i really did like the storyline outside whatever it is that they considered "bullying" which by the way they did NOT have a good genuine reason to do so and it made the book less and less enjoyable. the fmc is amazing i really liked her she was the only person there with common sense but everyone else in this book pissed me off to the point where i almost dnfed

i think this is the type of book where even tho it's mid you'll still want more.

3.25 stars. A Gothic college, bullying trio, elite vs ‘pit’ power play, fast approaching mysterious ‘games’ and all sorts of nefarious goings on… this book lured me in!

From her first interactions with staff and students, including a potential romantic interest, FMC Alex is on the back foot trying to figure out what on earth she’s stepped into, in this, her third - and likely final - attempt at university life. But she soon discovers it’s so much more than just an academic setting… and that you should choose your friends wisely.

The premise was well established, as were the mysteries - hopefully to be addressed when book two comes out. Meanwhile, this one took its time with world building, introducing our protagonist and agonists, and gradually getting the action underway… then giving us a big cliffhanger… arrghhh!

But yes, it drew me in sufficiently that I’ll be watching & waiting for book two’s release.

I enjoyed the exchanges between Alex and Bishop…

“You know, only fake flowers are perfect,” he muses softly. “Real beauty isn’t afraid of flaws. Something may be tainted and scarred, but it should embrace its imperfections.”

“My point, troublemaker, is that you’re trying too hard to fight what you really are, instead of embracing it. You’re rebelling against your own nature, and that’s what’s causing your distress.”

Alex was an interesting and pretty resilient FMC, given what we’re told of her past: “I’ve already been through hell. You three are barely a spark in comparison.”
But… for an estimated 20yo, she sometimes spoke as if a lot younger, with some immature comebacks and comments early on (fortunately this improved).

Similarly, Altair came across more like a boarding school than a university. I’m unaware of any universities (other than military academies) that require students to wear uniforms, don’t allow dyed hair, confiscate mobile phones, etc.

Now onto my pet peeve: there was a multitude of obvious proofreading errors, mainly grammatical and frequently related to tense (past and present incorrectly paired in the one sentence). I had an ARC but unfortunately, upon checking the KU release, found these errors remained in the final version. Examples included “freshman” instead of “freshmen”; “My sister Clara and his new girlfriend Elle…” (the ‘his” referred to the FMC’s father, not Clara); multiple “your” instead of “you’re”; and so many misplaced apostrophes and commas. There were also simple phrases that could have been easily improved, e.g. “weighed down by the weight of disappointment” or “I follow in step beside her” (if you are following, you are not beside). In this day and age, and with easy access to third party copy editing services, programs, etc., such basic errors are annoying and inexcusable.

My thanks to Grey’s Promotions and the author for the ARC, in exchange for my honest review.

Okayyyy, so the beginning was a bit slow for me and I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. But then it HOOKED me in, and that ending?! That cliffhanger?! I’m going to need to read book 2 and get some answers. There’s all the things we want, tension, action, betrayal - everything you need in a dark academia book!

Book one focused a-lot on building the world of Altair University and introducing all the heavy hitters. We have our FMC, Alex and then 3 other guys known as the Legacy’s, Camden, Bishop, and Sly.
There’s also handful of side characters that all play important parts in this first book.

There’s a bully aspect to this one, so be mindful of triggers. While there are a bunch of males, I don’t think this is going towards a why choose, but I could be wrong! It’s definitely a slow burn 🔥

Alex is almost out of options, can’t stay in a school so her dad decides to send her to his alma mater, Altair. Here there are strict rules and high expectations. Alex immediately doesn’t vibe with the place but knows it’s her last chance to earn a degree and plans to keep her head down and graduate. The legacy’s decide she is a problem and must go. They make things increasingly difficult for Alex to keep her head down and blend in.

This was a fast, addictive read with dark gothic vibes, think Twisted Sisters and Deadly Class energy, which I totally love. The plot follows Alex Prescott, who is dropped off at Altair University, which is basically her last shot to get it together, but the school seems to be sketchy and full of secrets. Then three gorgeous guys—Sylvester, Camden, and Bishop—decide to make her life miserable... and she doesn’t know why.

To be honest, Alex starts off super unlikable and rude to everyone, but you’re still kind of rooting for her - she’s rough around the edges, and as you learn more about her, you start to understand why. The guys feel a bit superficial right now, but I’m hopeful we’ll get more layers in book two. The bullying was kind of juvenile (glitter bomb, broken plumbing, etc.), but it still kept me engaged.

I really liked the side characters and the tension building in the background (Alfie is so adorable in an innocent way). The flag scene was soooo good and dynamic! I wish there were more like that. Overall, it’s a fun, moody start to a series I’ll definitely keep following.

4 stars out of 5.
Because let's discuss;

1. This book has a good plot and characters in this, from bully to a friend, who sticks with you but also someone who backstabs you.

2. I really appreciate the strength of Alex here, for not giving up, despite how cruel situations can be and of course Bishop, the typical Alpha male, and a bully, who messes with her but I know will regret later.

3. Next are the elements of this book which make it a little different from other boarding, bully school romances and fantasy in nature, I mean I don't know the entire plot but is really intriguing.

4. I mean I also hate Cliffhangers and don't know why I signed up for this book because now I want to read the next part so badly.

I don't know what to say about this book. So , it was pretty boring at the start but it recovered . The whole plot was so not serious like a group of adults are bulling another adult like middle schoolers by that i mean using glitter and all. Also I honestly hated Bishop , bro was trying so hard to be the alpha-sigma male type like ok calm down with the ego that is so sensitive that if you poke it with a feather he will burst. Also I don't know why but I like Sylvester alot. 'Let's Seal It'part!!! like stawwppp.
. If Alex chooses Bishop over Sylvester, I'm gonna flip.
ALEX .....was something like my girl was resilient and strong for sure and mostly maintained her confidence so no complaints there.
I feel like this book tried to be dark and gothic but came out as goofy and unserious [for me atleast].:)

In my opinion, the first book carries the weight of convincing me to invest in the rest of the series. If the first book doesn’t hook me, I’m out it’s the ultimate test for the series. And this is one of the books.
I'm left so confused and asking myself what's the whole purpose of the book. nothing.
It seems to me no plot, no romance at all, and gothic? if this is what gothic is, then I know nothing about gothic.
I feel I was just reading about childish bullying and ridiculous conversations around college students and supposed to be adults.
Throughout the whole book, it was very difficult for me to think of the world building. everything went so slow, and yet I got nothing out of it.
It was just a very disappointing experience for me

Thank you NetGalley and Victory Editing for providing the e-ARC in exchange for my honest opinion

Tell me why Bishop is so mean to this girl
He doesn't even know her but he's hellbent on making her life miserable.

Don't get me started on how everyone literally celebrated the fact that she was getting bullied so at this point I hate everyone except maybe Alfie.

I can't wait to read Book 2 and see her fall in love with someone that's not Bishop Ashbourne

I don’t know if it’s just me or what, because I see that this book has plenty of good reviews. But honestly, I didn’t like it almost at all. 90% of the book is completely about nothing—nothing happens. The interactions between the main characters felt cringe, weird, and I kept rolling my eyes at how awkward it all was for me. I considered not even finishing it, but the last 10% was engaging, so I started the second book too… but that one also wasn’t great. The dialogues are completely childish—this kind of behavior would make sense if it were set in high school or even middle school, but definitely not at a university.

Overall, it feels like it’s trying to be dark romance, but in reality, it’s entirely immature.

The writing also feels really odd and repetitive. There’s this constant line like, “He looked at me with anger, but I could see something else there… interest maybe?” —and that exact type of sentence appeared so many times.

We get multiple POVs, but they all sound exactly the same. I don’t see any real differences between them.

Spoiles*******

Alex calls Bishop “my shadow” and he calls her “my little troublemaker.” Horribly cringe. Why is he her shadow now? They’ve barely had any interactions, and we’re supposed to feel some kind of chemistry? There’s zero chemistry, zero anything—suddenly, only in their POVs, we see that they want each other, but nothing in the actual events suggests that. I was hoping she would end up with Sylvester, because at least she had some chemistry and interactions with him, but it looks like Bishop is her main love interest.
I honestly can’t understand why she’s into Bishop. The author failed to developed any real connection between them. Sylvester was far more attractive and engaging—Bishop, on the other hand, is bland, forgettable, and brings nothing to the table. I didn’t like him at all. There is also no romance.

The bullying felt completely childish—framing her for stealing clothes, stealing her notebook, throwing glitter on her? :D C'mooon. This is supposed to be dark? And the entire reason they hate her is based on complete nonsense. Underdeveloped and simplistic, just there to have something happen.

Her good friend completely betrays her, and she doesn’t even process it—this betrayal is just brushed over. The whole thing is totally illogical. Many conversations and scenes are totally pointless—pure filler. I don’t know why, but it just annoyed me so much.

Yet for some reason, I still read it and even finished it, and I started the second book too. I have no idea why! But that's the reason I give 2 stars because somehow I'm still going on with this book.

It's sad because I feel like it had good potential, but in my opinion, it didn't deliver. The interactions between the main characters are completely shallow.

"The Bleak Beginning: Altair University" by Amber Vant was an intense, gripping read that kept me hooked from start to finish. I went in expecting a typical dark academia novel, but what I got was so much more—secrets, tension, and an atmosphere so rich it felt like I was walking through the eerie halls of Altair University myself.

The main character, Alex Prescott, was easy to root for. It was evident from the moment she stepped onto campus that she was an outsider, and the way the Legacy families quickly targeted her for something her father committed years ago added an unexpected element of mystery. The novel does an excellent job of gradually revealing Altair's secrets, leaving me questioning everyone's motivations. I particularly enjoyed how the many perspectives provided insight into persons who could otherwise appear one-dimensional. Even the characters I loathed at first had depth, and by the conclusion, I was torn about who to believe.

Amber Vant's writing style is immersive. The descriptions of the university's gothic architecture and eerie atmosphere helped build the tone. The pacing was excellent—tense moments were tempered by character-driven sections, and I never felt the plot lagged. That being said, I wish there had been more development of Alex's personal hobbies and backstory outside of the struggle with the Legacies.

What about the cliffhanger ending? Brutal. I finished the book and knew I needed to read the next one right away. I still have so many questions, and I can already tell the sequel will be even more intense. This is a must-read for anyone who like dark academia, secret societies, academic rivalry, and a splash of romance.

This was my first book by Amber and I love her writing. She has definitely gained a new reader for life! Thank you Amber for the ARC and I can't wait to read the next book in this series. Book is out NOW so what are you waiting for?!! Go GET it!!

Madame Vant ... I just want to talk...

I'm back with a clear head.
This is a bully romance with a Gothic setting. 3 alpha-holes that hate the FMC because of some old shit that happened back when her parents were in school there. That she literally has no idea about.
The school itself is weird, y'all. It's like as soon as you go past the gates, you go back in time. And they also claim to value education but I truly have seen none of that. WHY do you need a whole class on this school's bs history? Alex may be a little pissy cause she's there against her will, but she brings up solid points. And everyone just brushes her off with a "quiet Outsider. This is ✨ tradition✨. This is ✨L E G A C Y✨." I also did not like how the teachers treated Alex for no reason. It's one thing when it's the students, cause the Legacies are THE It Boys. So obviously everyone is falling over themselves just to get noticed by them. But the teachers being unnecessarily rude from the get go is uncalled for. They tell her to get a thicker skin. The chancellor literally sneered at Alex and pointedly showed disdain for her IN FRONT OF HER FATHER! And he did NOTHING except chastise his own daughter and leave her to the wolves with zero knowledge about what this insane school really was. I still don't quite understand what the Games are. No one truly explains it since they all hate Alex and would prefer to keep her in the dark about these things she doesn't even care about. All I've gathered is that they're dangerous and I wouldn't be surprised if people have died from them.
I trust literally no one in this book. Everyone is the enemy as far as I'm concerned. And with how this one ended!!! I literally had to take several laps around my room. I am so interested to see how the next book plays out. And I'm so incredibly mad I don't have it in my hands right this moment.

Thank you to Greys Promos for the ARC. I'm gonna go stare at a wall

Thank you to the author and Greys Promos for an ARC of this novel! All opinions and thoughts are my own.

Altair University is dark academia meets mean girl (well, mean boy). Alex Prescott finds herself dropped in the middle of privilege and legacies as she begins her studies at Altair University. Even though she is technically a legacy herself, the welcome she receives is anything but warm. Instead, the other four legacies (specifically three boys) will spend every waking moment trying to get her to leave. It is a mysterious and tense journey, to say the least.

Bullying was a large plot point in this novel and, unfortunately, it was too much for me to enjoy. I wanted Alex to have a few more wins against the terrible trio out to get her, and I wanted more people to be on her side. I was intrigued and surprised (slightly) by the ending of the novel, but I wish we had gotten more of that earlier. You could tell it was being set up for a sequel, which is fine, but that also made it feel too drawn out.
Overall I do think if you like dramas and a bully romance in a dark, gothic setting, then you would enjoy this one. The romance is subtle; just a few scenes here and there. I expect there to be more in the sequel based on events that happened in this one. But for me, the bullying was too much for my enjoyment. I do hope Alex comes back and kicks some butt in the next novel––show those boys who the best legacy really is.

Last note, I did absolutely love the illustrations in the novel. They were beautiful and really helped you picture the scene.

When I started reading this book, it made me really mad because of the way Alex was being treated. Then I realized that if a book is making you really mad, then it is really well written. I love dark academia type books because when they are set in a school setting, anything and everything can happen, and the twists get crazier the more you read.

Alex Prescott is just trying to get through life at Altair until she realizes that her family name comes with some past consequences that people have not forgotten about or forgiven. As unofficially being a Legacy at the school, the other three Legacies have made it their mission to make her life impossible for the things her father did during his time at Altair. The only problem is that Alex doesn't know anything about that time or what happened, and nobody cares.

In this school, you never know who your real friends are, and no one is who they seem to be. I loved that it was a fast-paced book, but without giving too much all at once and still leaving you wanting more. There are still so many questions that need to be answered, especially with the way it ended. If you don't mind cliffhangers, this one will leave you with needing the next book right away. It is very dark, and it gave me Zodiac Academy vibes without all the magic and shifting. There is so much tension between the Legacies and some funny moments in which Alex gets back at the boys. You'll be obsessed with this story just like I am.

If you love gothic romances, you’re going to love The Bleak Beginning: Altair University! It definitely gave off major Gothikana vibes mixed with a bit of Zodiac Academy, and I was loving every second. The bully romance aspect? Absolutely delicious, and the slow burn between Alex and Bishop is everything. If you’re expecting a quick payoff, you’ll need to be patient because this is a true enemies-to-lovers story with a ton of build-up!

Vant’s description of the University is so vivid that you feel like you’re actually there, experiencing the chaos and the mysteries alongside the students. I couldn’t get enough of the world-building!

And I was rooting for Alex every step of the way! She’s tough, resilient, and she definitely knows how to stand up for herself and those she cares about. Despite everything she’s put through by the Legacy boys, she never backs down and I seriously admired her strength and determination throughout the book.

I’m already counting the days until the next book. There are so many questions left unanswered, and I am ready to dive into the next installment and unearth even more Legacy secrets. I cannot WAIT for the Altair games, and if the pre-trial game is anything to be judged on then it’s going to be brutal! And that cliffhanger ending? June cannot come soon enough!

I am not okay. I finished Altair Games at 3:47 a.m., clutching the book to my chest like it could stop my heart from actually breaking. Alexandra Prescott has ruined me. I don’t know how to explain this book without screaming, but I’ll try. Just know that I am feral. Unwell. Spiraling.

From page one, I was hooked. Alex walks into Altair like a lamb into the wolves’ den, and every single Legacy kid sharpened their teeth just for her. And I LIVED for it. The tension? Palpable. The betrayal? Gutting. The slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers, nightmare of a Legacy leader? I need to lie down. Bishop is toxic. He’s cruel. He’s magnetic. I hate him. I love him. I want to tattoo their every confrontation on my soul.

The university itself is practically a character—gothic, secretive, steeped in old power and darker truths. It’s like zodiac academy had a baby with a gothic romance and then raised it on pure spite.

Alex is a razor wrapped in silk—smart, resilient, vengeful in the best possible way. Watching her rise, watching her unravel the lies that bound her to a legacy she never asked for, was electric.

If you like your heroines sharp, your love interests morally gray, and your boarding school dramas dark enough to make you question every friendship you've ever had—Altair Games is your new obsession.

I have to say I'm really not sure how I feel about this book. I found myself engrosed reading it, yet having trouble understanding the background which didn't make much sense to me. But then again I think that was intentional, the author was creating a scenario shrouded in a mystery you won't quite understand, fueled by an unrelenting campaign of revenge, hate and hostility.

Alexandra is the daughter of a legacy family, whose arrival at the university is met with furious hostility which she doesn't understand the cause of. Then you have the sons of the other legacy families, Bishop, Camden and Sylvester, who are the lynch pins of the hostility doing anything and everything they can to push Alex out of the university, blaming the actions of Alex's father for ruining their families. Alex is thrust into an enviroment where she has no friends and doesn't know who she can trust.

You can't help but wonder if the smouldering heat Alex finds she has with the defacto leader of the legacies, Bishop, will win the day. If the occasional softness Sylvester showed will manifest in other ways. Betrayal, revenge, secrets, lies, danger all play thier part and wow what a cliffhanger at the end, I'm excited tro see how this story will conclude.

Shrouded in mystery & mistrust...Altair University is a must-read!

I absolutely adored Altair University- who doesn't love a well-written bully romance?? Alex is the epitome of the classic brooding teenager; you know, the typical "I don't fit in with the it crowd" type of person. While she likes doing her own thing, it is quite obvious that all she wants is to make friends. I love how she is a horticulturist (same here!) and how she feels more comfortable with plants than people (again, same, girl 😂). But, when she enters Altair University, she is met with nothing but people who look at her like she is not even worthy of being the gum under their shoes. The hostility comes from three main guys, Bishop, Cam, and Sylvester. The Legacies. And they make sure Alex knows she is not welcome.

But you know what they say...there is a very fine line between love and hate 😏

I am giving this 4.9 out of 5 stars for one reason, and one reason only: Amber Vant gave a plot twist I did not even fathom could be possible! I take off 0.1 stars solely because my jaw *legit* dropped, and I was significantly caught off guard. I was NOT expecting that personality flop from a certain someone! Even after a reread, I still couldn't see it coming😂

Highly recommend Altair University for anyone who enjoys dark academia vibes with a bully romance trope🔥

Okay, listen up, fantasy romance lovers! If you're tired of the same old tropes and want something dark, twisty, and utterly addictive, you NEED to read the Bleak Beginning.

Imagine Zodiac Academy meets Wednesday with serious gothic vibes – that's Altair University. Our girl Alexandra Prescott shows up, and immediately, the powerful Legacy families are out for blood because of her dad. She's literally surrounded by enemies, trying to navigate this super secretive, cutthroat institution. It's giving "trust issues even more trust issues," as one reviewer perfectly put it.

And then there's him. The leader of the Legacy group, with those piercing emerald eyes. He's determined to drive her out, but the magnetic pull? Ugh, it's everything. That enemies-to-lovers tension is off the charts, I can feel it.

This book is packed with twists and secrets to uncover, and the pacing is fast and furious. It's not just romance; it's a dangerous game of survival where the stakes are deadly. If you love dark academia, a heroine fighting for her life, and falling for the guy who should be her biggest enemy, then clear your schedule. You're about to get obsessed.

Perfect for fans of: Dark academia, enemies-to-lovers, secret societies, and stories where the stakes are life or death.

This is a dark romance, college romance, dark academia, shrouded in mysteries, secret society, and bully romance. Alexandra, or Alex as she prefers to be called, is sent to Altair University. This is her last, last chance. Alex's dad went to this school but failed to tell Alex anything about her legacy at this school. There are "Legacy Boys" at this school, Sylvester, Bishop, and Camden. They hate Alex from the start. The Legacy boys are determined to get Alex to leave the school. So these boys bully Alex everyway they can think of. They hold past mistakes against Alex.

There is not a lot of romance in this book. This particular book is very mysterious. Alex is somewhat attracted to her bullies, despite how they treat her. Alex is a very strong character, despite everything that is done to her. It's definitely enemies to wannabe more. The next book promises more romance. We'll see. This book leaves off on a dramatic cliffhanger. I couldn't help the feeling that I had read most of this book before? I couldn't figure out where. It just seemed very familiar.

I received an advanced copy of this book and voluntarily left this review.

In Amber Vant's Altair University series debut, The Bleak Beginning, we meet Alexandra (Alex) Prescott, a new Altair College student from a prestigious legacy family. Alex quickly discovers that Altairs significance extends beyond its reputation as an elite academic institute. Determined to seek revenge, Bishop, Camden, and Sylvester channel their hostility toward Alex, leaving her with more questions than answers about her father's past betrayal.

Engaging plots and pace make the narrative enjoyable. However, the world-building feels lacking, and the characters could have been explored more deeply beyond the surface level. Future instalments would benefit from providing more detail regarding each character's history as the current narrative felt somewhat superficial and offered rather surface-level introductions, especially concerning the Legacy boys. The multiple POVs helped connect to the plot, and without them, I wouldn't have enjoyed Altair as much as I did.

As for the ending, be prepared for a cliffhanger! It's sure to keep you on pins and needles until the next instalment arrives.

I’m an avid fan of dark romance, secret societies, family rivalries and sorts of things that will have cause tense interactions and loads of angst. This book fits that description to the T. This is also a bully romance. There were four founding fathers and one of the families betrayed the others and now the daughter of the “bad guy” is attending school with the three sons of the other families. Alex attends this school not sure of her reception but it is quickly evident that she is not welcomed. Yet Alex is determined to attend do her work, keep her head down and graduate. Alex is also interested in finding out the secrets of the university and her family. These three men Camden, Bishop, and Sly don’t want her there and they want to make her pay. This was a definite slow burn for me. The book is really intense with explaining the background and history and laying the groundwork for the next book. The story of Alex and these guys is interesting and I enjoyed the multiple point of views that give us some insight into what others are thinking and feeling. But, this book is very dark so please check the trigger warnings and it does end of a cliffhanger.

This book pulled me in from the very first page with its vivid descriptions and smooth, effortless writing. The university setting is so well done that I felt like I was walking the campus alongside Alex, experiencing everything through her sharp, sassy perspective.

The Legacy Boys—Sylvester, Camden, and Bishop are intense. At times, they made me furious, but they were also darkly intriguing, keeping me hooked as I waited to see if they would show even a hint of redemption.

Alex’s prank had me laughing out loud, breaking up the tension in the best way. And then there’s her shadow. From the moment she arrives, his presence lingers, and every close encounter had me on edge, waiting for something to happen. This is a true slow burn, and I can only hope book two finally brings Alex and her shadow face-to-face with their real feelings.

That cliffhanger? Brutal. I need The Ruthless Rivalry now! June can’t come fast enough.

Thank you to Grey’s Promotions for the eARC in exchange for my honest review!

New Author for me and it wasn't a bad experience. If Gothic, bully, enemy to lovers is your thing then you will love this..also it ends in a cliff hanger!! I didn't know haha.
I feel this book was more about creating the world and Amber's writing really gives you the feeling of being in the eerily Gothic University. It felt so real..
Alex has been sent to her Father's Alma, Altair University. What she wasn't prepared for was the disdain towards her and her legacy. There are 4 Legacies, the other 3 are made up of the It Boys; Camden, Bishop & Sly. She is being bullied and punished for something her parents did that she has no knowledge of. The story slowly reveals more clue to what happened as it progresses. The bullying is quite heavy so read with care.
I liked Alex's character, she was so strong and resilient. She wasn't going to sit back and take it all. I really felt sorry for her because she really was alone and in this place you can't trust anyone.
The cliffhanger was definitely shocking and now Book 2 needs to arrive sooner.

5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 — I would sell my SOUL to attend Altair University.

You know that moment when a book reaches into your chest, grabs your still-beating heart, and says, ‘Yeah, I own this now’? That’s what this book did. And I’m not okay. I’m OBSESSED.

This isn’t just a book. It’s a problem. A life-ruining, sleep-depriving, sanity-shattering problem that I will never recover from and I loved every second of it.

From the SECOND I stepped onto the shadow-soaked campus of Altair University, I knew I was doomed. Amber Vant didn’t write this story, she carved it into my SOUL with black ink. The characters?? Oh my GOD. Every single one of them owns a piece of me now.

Let’s talk about Bishop. Mysterious, morally gray, probably a psychopath. He has no right being that attractive. I want to slap him. I want to kiss him.

And THEN there’s Alex. Queen of my HEART. The way she refuses to play by the rules in a world built to crush her? ICONIC. I’d follow her into a dark forest with no flashlight and no plan.
