This is such a cool book, and while its target audience is clearly young, readers of any age are sure to enjoy the incredible illustrations, clear structure, and quality info about these charming heroines, immortal and mortal alike.
Here's what to expect from each of the 51 entries: (1) a really cool illustration of the featured character/s, (2) the character's (or characters') name/s and a brief account of their origins, what they're known for, and any noteworthy lineage, and (3) an intriguing added detail and any associated symbols. This structure makes the book easy to follow and a nice point of reference for readers of any age.
Mythology is riddled with extremely grown up themes, motifs, and actions, so I was curious to see how some characters' stories were presented with the target audience in mind. While the author doesn't fully hold certain characters' feet to the fire by naming the explicit wrongs they commit against others, Forbes does acknowledge carefully when characters misbehave. On one hand, I wanted a little more transparency about those bad actors; on the other, I fully understand the choices here.
This is both an interesting and useful collection, and readers should understand that they are getting more of a reference book with great colors and images than a book of concise myths/stories. There's a lot to like here, and I definitely enjoyed the review.

5 stars for the beautiful, stunning, gorgeous illustrations AND for the fact that my queens Cassandra, Circe, Medea, and Helen are in this book about female HEROES!! Sappho being mentioned also made my sapphic heart very happy :)

I just finished reading Female Heroes of Greek Mythology, and this book is an absolute gem! It's packed with 51 captivating stories about some of the most remarkable women from Greek mythology, crafted especially for kids ages 8 to 12—but honestly, anyone with a love for myths will find it fascinating.
The book introduces readers to a diverse lineup of female heroes—from goddesses like Persephone, the vibrant goddess of spring, and Aphrodite, the enchanting goddess of love, to powerful figures like Medusa, the infamous gorgon with snakes for hair. Each story highlights these women's courage, talents, and strength as they battle foes, protect their homes, or rule their realms. The way the book celebrates their bravery and unique powers makes it both inspiring and fun to read.
One of my favorite things about this book is how thoughtfully it's put together. Every heroine is accompanied by a beautiful illustration that brings her story to life. Alongside each tale, you get a snapshot of her origins, what she’s famous for, her family background, and a symbol connected to her—like animals or foods—that adds an extra layer of learning. Plus, there are fascinating tidbits sprinkled throughout that make Greek mythology feel accessible and exciting.

Female Heroes of Greek Mythology is an excellent introduction to the women of ancient Greece history and mythology for young kids. While it is marked for 8 and older, I do think it does a good job distilling down the figures and stories to their core. I was actually really pleasantly surprised at how child-friendly it reads despite the content, because oh boy, imagine telling a kid all of Zsus' escapades. No, thank you.
The book features 51 female goddesses, heroes and legendary figures. Each of them gets a gorgeous illustration (and they're all beautiful and diverse). Then, two pages describing who the figure is and telling their story. This is followed by a 'Did you know' fact or an idea of an activity to encourage the young reader to explore and learn more.
At the end of the book, there's a glossary explaining some of the most common terms in an easy, accessible (once again child-friendly) way as well as more resources and other figures to explore.
I was delighted to even see an entry for Sappho albeit of course focused on her poetry and legacy!
All in all, I think this is a beautiful book that even adults might enjoy owning. I can stare at those illustrations for hours. But for a child, especially a young girl, it would be a great introduction to the Greek mythology obsession.

As someone who has followed Megan DuVarney Forbes for years on social media due to our shared experience as teachers and her informative and engaging history and literary content, I was delighted when I realized her upcoming release was available to read on NetGalley. Given the fact that I hadn’t truly studied Greek mythology since I was a teenager, the focus of this book was very welcomed. The quick and simple expository-like manner in which each female heroine’s story is told lends itself to the ease in implementing this text in the classroom. Indeed, I am curious to determine whether or not my own students will become as enthralled as I was while reading each part.
The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and truly leapt off the page. That said, I wish this text included some more overtly interactive content— activities, comprehension questions, etc. to allow potential student readers a chance to digest each story and keep every individual’s name and background straight. Perhaps it was because I read the book in (almost) one sitting, but even I had difficulty remembering each god, goddess, and figure’s name, let alone the relationship and/or association each one had to another. A family tree honestly would have helped tremendously, as would have more illustrations of the tales being told.

Perhaps it was because I read the book in (almost) one sitting, but even I had difficulty remembering each god, goddess, and figure’s name, let alone the relationship and/or association each one had to another. A family tree honestly would have helped tremendously, as would have more illustrations of the tales being told.
All in all Female Heroes of Greek Mythology was a enjoyable read and would make an excellent resource for students in grades 4/5 through 8.

I really enjoyed this book. The layout is simple; illustrations are impactful and interesting; and the "Did you know?" facts were so interesting and varied! The stories of these goddesses are handled with care and arranged in an order that makes sense reading from start to finish. This will feed so many mythology kids' appetite for more and prepare them for other chapter books with these goddesses in them.
Overall, my concern isn't a deal-breaker. I don't imagine many kids would be rushing to Google, but I do think it is a possibility to be aware of.

I love learning about the Greek goddesses, and I love seeing the goddesses represented as strong females and not just in relation to their male counterparts. This book accomplishes this goal wonderfully. 51 stories are included, each with a short (1 1/2 page) narrative, fun facts to know, a beautiful illustration and symbols that are associated with each goddess.
This is intended for children ages 8-12, but the stories are written were good enough to appeal to adults as well. In fact, I intend to use some of this material for my own artwork: I am in the process of developing sculptural depictions of Greek Goddesses as strong, powerful and independent females. I feel that this book can stand alongside some of the more “traditional” sources in my research.

This is a great to young readers guide to learning about the goddess and women of Greek mythology. This book was easy to read and understand, wonderful illustrations and full of great information. Even though my little one is too young herself to retain any of the information in this book, she still enjoyed me reading it to her. I highly recommend this book for young readers and young people at heart.

As a lover of mythology, Greek mythology topping my list, this was an immediate need to read for me!
I love the focus on the females of mythology, often overlooked in many texts. The illustrations were beautiful, going really well with the descriptions/stories of each deity, hero, etc.
The pacing between female was good, and it was very informational in regards to mythology! Great for those just being introduced to mythology!
All and all, a book I thoroughly enjoyed, and am so happy to have added to my mythological reads collection!

Megan Forbes has done it again. I've never been interested in ancient history. It was always something I found a bit dull and boring. However, this book was written in easy, digestible biographies that were fascinating to read. I loved the focus on female Greek heroes and how the normal historical narrative was revised to center their history rather than the usual focus on the men of the ancient world. The illustrations were absolutely incredible and added to the biographies in an effective way too.

For someone like me who isn't aware of Greek mythology and heard of it in bits and pieces, this book is an absolute gem! With beautiful illustration and simple structure, the book threads the 51 female heroes in an easy-to-follow narration style that's engaging and informative. Highly recommend it.
