If you're as captivated by Nature, specifically baby bunnies, as I am, you'll love this delightful picture book by Mary L. Schmidt called Clover. The illustrations of Clover, plus a wayward baby squirrel, will enrich your heart - I found them to be perfectly endearing.

The poetry describing how baby rabbits grow and thrive on delicious clover and other garden greenery also explains the way they protect themselves in their habitats, which I found both charming and written with love by Ms. Schmidt.

This adorable book is a perfect read-aloud for a young toddler, or an older elementary school-aged child beginning to explore the outdoors and is curious or fascinated with nature. I bought it for me because I love baby rabbits and have had many encounters with them over the years.

On another note, Ms. Schmidt is a talented, multi-award-winning author who delves into many other adult genres besides children's books, and I've been a long-time fan of her work. She's awesome! Bravo, Ms. Schmidt, and thank you for such a sweet start to my weekend.

Clover is a charming and educational picture book that gently invites young readers into the world of bunny rabbits. Written in playful rhyme, the story follows a curious bunny named Clover as he guides children through his daily life. Along the way, readers discover how rabbits live, where they find shelter, what they like to eat, and the natural challenges they face.

Blending fun storytelling with fascinating facts, the book strikes a perfect balance between learning and entertainment. Clover becomes both a guide and a friend, sharing through rhythm and rhyme what makes a tasty snack, how rabbits play, and which animals they might meet in backyards or parks. The lyrical flow makes the story delightful to read aloud, while also helping children easily remember the lessons it teaches.

One of the strongest aspects of Clover is how it introduces children to concepts of wildlife and nature in their own environments. Since rabbits and squirrels are common in many neighborhoods, children can quickly relate the story to their own observations outdoors. The book subtly teaches principles of coexistence, showing how wild animals interact with each other and their surroundings. It also offers practical knowledge, such as safe foods children can leave out for rabbits, encouraging compassion and responsibility toward nature at an early age.

Clover goes beyond being a charming story about a rabbit; it encourages young readers to notice and appreciate the wildlife around them. The book gently nurtures curiosity and respect for animals, fostering an early understanding of ecology and empathy. Parents and educators will find it an excellent resource for sparking conversations about caring for animals and protecting the environment, all through a story that feels approachable and fun.

With its combination of rhyming narration, charming subject matter, and educational themes, Clover is a wonderful choice for storytime. It captures the innocence of childhood curiosity while teaching important lessons about wildlife and the natural world. Both children and adults will come away with a greater appreciation for the rabbits that hop quietly through our backyards and parks.

An endearing rhyming tale that brings backyard wildlife to life.

"Clover" is a calm and wonderfully designed picture book that introduces children to the secret world of bunny rabbits. This story, told in charming, rhythmic poetry, follows Clover the rabbit as he offers his favorite delicacies, discusses how rabbits protect themselves from predators, and recounts how he and his buddies play and grow in their natural environment.
"Clover" is ideal for babies snuggled up at storytime or early readers exploring on their own. It introduces young minds to the everyday wonders of animals. Children learn what rabbits eat, how they create shelter, and which animals make good playmates and which should be avoided.
The book quietly encourages youngsters to be more aware of local animals such as squirrels and bunnies and teaches them how to observe and care for these species with kindness and respect.
The rhyming rhymes flow nicely, making it a pleasure to read aloud while the soft, nature-inspired images complement the friendly, instructive tone. "Clover" is an excellent resource for teaching young children about the cycles of animals just outside their door, whether it is read at home, in the classroom, or as part of a nature unit.
A heartwarming celebration of curiosity and compassion, "Clover" makes learning about animals feel like play—and leaves children ready to notice the quiet hop of a rabbit in the grass.

Clover by Mary L Schmidt is a delightful and educational children's book. Clover is a story about an adorable cottontail baby bunny and his daily travels throughout its life. From the interaction with other bunnies, squirrels and even garden gnomes, to its survival for food, shelter and Clover's love for his mother.

Each page is beautifully colorful and detailed with full of life images of all in a bunny's world. The lettering is large enough for any young child to start reading on their own. And each page is written with poetic verse to better help any young future poet to read in a rhyming sequence. A quick read, with just under twenty pages, makes this a great bedtime story you can read to the little ones at nighttime, or maybe have them read it to you. A well deserved five stars and a must-have children's book to add to any child's library.
