I don't play video games (for the record), but I really liked this book. Jessica Lindl combines practical career advice with video game history and real-life examples of people who don't play by the rules. The book has three levels of engagement: 1. The loop that ensures your professional life accounts for your interests and growth 2. The set of teammates you need to help you reach new career levels, and how to engage them 3. A quick manager guide to finding, attracting, and retaining career loopers (because you don't just want them, you need them).
I used to make grand career plans - and they ALWAYS blew up in my face. I accidentally developed a new career strategy that I call "follow the white rabbit", where I don't have specific roles or goals, but I chase curiosity. This book is a practical, structured way to chase that rabbit in a way that minimizes the risk of ending up somewhere you don't want to be.
Recommended reading for job seekers, forward-thinking leaders, people obsessed with tackling new challenges, tinkerers, rule benders, and, of course, gamers.
In the Career Game Loop: Learn to Earn in the New Economy, author and veteran video game executive Jessica Lindl provides a powerhouse of a playbook pursuant to what working in today’s world of work entails. Using numerous examples of real-life games, Lindl repeatedly demonstrates how they can be incorporated into the “Core Career Loop”. Said Career Loop consists of four phases: choosing a profession, learning the necessary skills, hunting down a job in that profession, and using the job as a springboard toward further growth.
Lindl is also quick to point out that “we have never been so free to choose our own paths or so empowered to adapt”. Drawing from her vast and extensive experience in the gaming industry, Lindl weaves a comprehensive, concise and cohesive tapestry of the aforementioned gaming framework and applies it to modern-day challenges of today’s work-world. One clearly does not have to be a video gamer to reap the benefits of The Career Game Loop! Bravo!
In this book, Jessica Lindl explains, using video game references, how to keep your skills and career up-to-date. Her "Core Career Loop" is made up of four phases: 1) Choose Quest, 2) Level Up, 3) Job Hunt, and 4) Job Craft and then repeat.
While learning how to keep your skills updated, you learn many interesting facts about video games, how they were/are made, what keeps gamers interested, and why people play. Using these references, Jessica Lindl certainly put an interesting spin on career progression.
I really love this analogy!! It’s going to take this kind of fresh thinking to make an impact on jobseekers just joining the workforce. This revolutionary perspective on cyclical vs linear career development is incredible. As a director of recruitment and retention in a high turnover industry, I can’t wait to implement this concept with my team and share these ideas with my colleagues in talent!
Who would have thought that the hours spent gaming could equate to career skills? In the book The Career Game Loop by Jessica Lindl she equates gaming skills with career skills. Loved this book and the way it connected the gaming world to real life! The realization that we can still change our minds on what we want to pursue in life, learn new things, and keep evolving was great! It was an easy read and kept my attention.
Excellent career book!!! Get a pencil ready -- you will be underlining her suggestions.
Jessica Lindl cracked the code on something brilliant: gamers already possess the exact mindset needed to thrive in today's rapidly changing economy.
Her four-step method (Choose a Quest, Level Up, Job Hunt, Job Craft) makes career development feel less intimidating by connecting it to skills millions already excel at—gaming. This isn't typical career advice filled with corporate buzzwords; Lindl gets tactical with real strategies for landing jobs, acing interviews, and negotiating offers.
Perfect for gamers wondering how their hobby translates to professional success, or parents looking for a bridge to get their twenty-something out of the basement and into the boardroom.
The best news...Those hours perfecting strategies and overcoming obstacles playing games weren't wasted time—they were career training in disguise.
Are you a gamer? Are you someone who wants to move forward in your career? If you answer yes to either question or even more so if you said yes to both then this book is for you. Jessica Lindl provides an intriguing framework that anyone can apply to their career whether they are just getting started, considering a change, or those who are more advanced. I enjoyed reading it and gained a lot of knowledge that I will as I explore new roles and even after I land my next job. This is a way to take what makes designing games work and apply it to continuous learning. Definitely a must read!
