Rate this book
After saving the world, a reluctant young hero finds himself targeted for not having powers, in the final volume of this action-packed superhero series.

Matt Callaghan is alive—barely. Having escaped the destruction of the home he shared with Jane Walker after an attack by political assassins, he’s back with the young superheroes of Morningstar Academy—and back in the center of a conspiracy that’s unraveling the world around him. A cult still pursues him; governments still want his powerless human blood. Any hopes he once held of living a normal life seem dead and buried, and it’s all Matt and Jane can do to try and ensure he doesn’t end up the same way.

But there’s no time to rest or recover. Unbeknownst to Matt or Jane, a great danger a disaster brewing in the heart of New York City that threatens not just lives but the very fabric of reality. Only the full might of Jane and the Legion of Heroes can possibly save the world from this twisted, impossible catastrophe—which is exactly what their enemies are counting on.

And so the board is set; the pieces are laid for the final, twisted trap. Unseen forces prepare to reshape superhuman life as we know it, and every secret Matt and Jane unearth seems to reveal a dozen more. But Matt still has a few tricks up his sleeve, as well as old friends he can count on.

Meanwhile, Jane’s abilities continue to grow and her patience has run out for those who would harm the people she cares about. Enemies Lady Dawn is done letting evil control, corrupt, and triumph. With unimaginable power running through her veins and furious, iron-clad resolve, if the world won’t bend to her will, she might just have to break it.

Better than it has any right to be

This series ended up being so much more than I expected. I expected cliche superhero shenanigans and got a thoughtful ponderance on morality, power, love, and more. It gets straight up metaphysical at times, yet remains so grounded that I fell for the setting and characters.

I am satisfied by the conclusion, but now that it is over, I feel bereft. I will miss Matt Callaghan, Jane Walker, Gisele Pixus, and all the others as though they were my own friends and have gone from me.

I like the characters and there is a really good section in the middle where our human protagonist outsmarts a bunch of superhumans.
Other than that previous problems persist. time travel sucked the tension out, we get a lame terminator-esk time travel paradox (sending a soldier back in time who becomes the father of the person giving the order to send the guy back).
The villain sucks again, and is even more stupid. Most of the tension comes from our protagonists being their own worst enemy. our oracle background character only works because he doesn't share any important information.
All of it comes together badly, is full of cliches and has been done better in other stories.

full circle

Benjamin Keyworth has done the impossible. Weaving a beautiful tapestry of a story with stakes that keep reaching for bigger and better heights while answering all the questions we’ve always wanted. Truly a beautiful and superb dive into the superhero genre that provides a fresh exploration of mortality and MORALITY. Please give this amazing book the awe inspiring send off it deserves.

I'm not too sure what to make if this book. I finally finished it, only because I wanted to know how the story ended, but I found that I wasn't in a hurry to find out. Everything about this book felt like it was mashed together from separate ideas the author had. And, I was not a fan of Jane becoming a god at the end of the book.

Well, the book is done and I do see myself picking up another book from this author. He had some strong characters, the story was all over the place.
