I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

What do you get when you take your favorite 90s Nickelodeon cartoon characters and bring them all together for one epic show-down?

No, it's not a Netflix sponsored movie (although, that would be damn great!)--it's the first volume in a graphic novel released by IDW collab w/Cartoon Network, of course.

I immediately saw the cover and was like, "Read NOW." No hesitation, no questions asked. I'm a 90s Nick kid, and if you live in the US and watch Cartoon Network every night after 9pm, you know what I mean too. Our favorite shows that nursed and comforted us in the mornings and after school every day have revisited the screens across the country as part of CN's new '90s are back" thing. I didn't think it'd last as long as it did, but boy am I glad because I am ALL ABOARD THIS SHIP (and have been, for quite awhile). :O

Characters

Heroes:
Samurai Jack
Powerpuff Girls
Ben Tennyson "Ben 10"
Dexter (Dexter's laboratory)
Ed, Ed, and Eddy (not 'heroes' per se, but from the show w/the same name)

Villains:
Aku (Samurai Jack)
Mandark (Dexter's laboratory)
Mojo Jojo (Powerpuff Girls)
Evil Robots

Basically, the story is a wild concoction cooked up to satisfy people like me who love these characters and don't care how much "sense" it makes to have them all together. The "villians" are all together and have some sort of plan to hold the "heroes" hostage and take their powers. Ed, Ed, and Eddy are just in there because of a fluke. Obviously, they get free pretty easily but their robot counterparts are created to learn from them as they fight and things escalate from there.

It's a short graphic novel. While at first I thought it was mostly written for a younger audience, I don't feel that way after reading it. It seemed more like twenty somethings would appreciate it more having seen the shows and followed the storylines. The characters are all explained, but not to the extent that you feel like it's made for people who have no idea who the Powerpuff Girls are, or Dexter from Dexter's Lab.

I felt like it was a fun, light, and really funny read with bright and colorful graphics that stayed true to each show. I recommend it for people who like any of the shows listed above, are fans of Cartoon Network, or just love amalgam stories that don't necessarily follow logic.

A fairly straightforward crossover between the major late-1990s/early-2000s Cartoon Network series. The usual premise: villains from each universe team up, heroes from each universe join forces to stop them. It probably could have been better, but what we get is still decently entertaining. (B)

I still remember watching Cartoon Network as a kid. Back then, cartoons weren't dubbed in Romanian and my English knowledge wasn't good enough to understand what was happening. Still, the images were self-explanatory most of the times, and later on when they dubbed the cartoons I was already in love with, I was super excited to finally get everything as it was meant to be.

Probably one of my favourite kind of episodes were the crossovers. So you probably get why this comic volume was a must-read. While I only watched several Ben 10 and Samurai Jack episodes, the rest were series whose episodes I've seen all.

The story in this one goes like this: Aku (the demon in Samurai Jack) creates the League of Extraordinary Villains. He is joined by Mandark, Mojo-Jojo and the bad guy from Ben 10 (I forgot his name). Their plan is to rule the worlds where the characters from Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack and Ed, Edd & Eddy live in - or destroy them if the heroes won't cooperate. Because you see, they kidnap them at the beggining because they're an important part of their plan.

But will they succeed? Of course not - good always wins. And this was the only flaw of this comic - it was way too predictable for my taste. I have to appreciate though that the characters are very true to the originals in both drawing style and personality. I even read the dialogues in their voices!

So if you like any of these shows (I think it's best if you are at least familiar with 2 or 3 of them) and you are looking for a quick, fun read, this comic is for you.

I received a free digital ARC of this title from NetGalley. I was not required to give a positive review.

It's a Cartoon Network free-for-all when four genius villains - Aku (Samurai Jack), Vilgax (Ben 10), Mandark (Dexter's Laboratory) and Mojo Jojo (Powerpuff Girls) send out evil robots to capture their respective heroes in an attempt to do what villains do best...take over the world!

I was a little confused at first as it jumps right in rather than giving us a backstory or catching us up to speed with what is going on - having multiple CN universes in one room making a plan come to action without ever explaining how they met or started hatching said plan might be difficult for younger readers to piece together (or perhaps it's quite the opposite and younger readers don't care about exposition). So instead, the title just jumps into the four villains discussing their plan and how wonderful and genius it is, before sending their robotic minions after the heroes.

The most disappointing part about this sequence is that there was an opportunity to show us so many different styles and types of robots but we are shown only two - the same robots attack Ben and Dexter, and the same robots attack Jack and the Powerpuff Girls. However, we do get to see one more style of robot (kind of a giant robot that looks like Bubbles) accidentally captures the non-heroic, oft-moronic Ed, Edd, and Eddy. In total (including Vilgax and Aku's servantbots) there are 6 different robots shown, so that was a bit of a disappointment.

My favorite thing about this title is that the artwork is like a collage of the different Cartoon Network series' styles - the characters all keep their original artstyle, rather than all of them sharing the same design.

The most interesting part of the volume comes by far when

I found it a little annoying that various little subplots are broken into five separate one-shots that must be purchased separately, but it doesn't distract from the central story too much.

All in all, the story is entertaining and good for fans of the CN universe. There is plenty of humor - including a talking (sort of) squirrel and even a couple Star Wars jokes. Since it is the first volumes, it will have other parts, but it works decently enough as a stand-alone.

'Super Secret Crisis War! Volume 1' takes a bunch of Cartoon Network heroes and villains and pits them into a mega-war reminiscent of the ones done by Marvel and DC. Kind of.

When evil Abu creates a League of Extraordinary Villains, they formulate a plan to capture all the good guys, emulate their powers in robot form and take over the world (insert maniacal laugh). And just in case that doesn't work, they have an overly complicated machine to destroy each world the heroes come from, because in this comic each set of heroes and villains comes from a different planet (hence the Crisis on Infinite Earths nod). So, we have The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Dexter's Laboratory, Ben 10 and, strangely, Ed, Edd and Eddy all thrown together to save the world.

It's as crazy as it sounds. It's harmless enough, but over 140 pages, it's hard to see any distinct things happening except with the Ed group. Also, there are a lot of sprawling double panels, which would work great in print, but kind of stink in digital form because you have to keep scrolling back and forth on a page to read the panels sequentially. It's a minor gripe and I had a lot of fun reading it. Derek Charm's art is chaotic and epic and fits the story. Script by Louise Simonson has a throw it all at the wall and see what sticks feel, and I was hoping for a little more humor instead of all those fight scenes, but it's still great for kids and fans of these shows.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this fun graphic novel.

Despite not knowing much about Ben 10 and Samurai Jack, I got pretty excited about wanting to read Super Secret Crisis War! because it sounded like such a fun way to dive back into the universe of Cartoon Network. Another reason being my love for Dexter's Laboratory and Powerpuff Girls back when I was a kid.

As is common with cartoons, the fight is always about good vs evil. In Super Secret Crisis War! Aku from Samurai Jack forms The League of Extraordinary Villains and recruits Vilgax from Ben 10, Mandark from Dexter's Laboratory and Mojo Jojo from Powerpuff Girls to take over their collective worlds with the help of the heroes themselves.

There are different kinds of robots and when the heroes manage to first get away, the main purpose of certain robots is revealed which comes as a nice plot twist. The accidental capture of Ed, Edd and Eddy turns out to be an inconvenience to the villains but it's fun to read about them being their usual clueless selves. Moreover, the relationship dynamics among the villains and the differences in their evilness are pretty interesting to read about.

The only thing I found a bit annoying was the inclusion of subplots that supplement the whole plot but aren't actually included in the volume itself. Overall, Super Secret Crisis War! is a fun, quick read. It does a good job of taking the reader right back into the Cartoon Network universe.

I thought this was a lot of silly fun. I love Dexter's Lab and I like the Powerpuff girls and Samurai Jack, so I figured I'd take a chance on this. I can't say I've ever watched more than a minute or two of Ben 10 or Ed Edd & Eddy, but the comic did a good job of introducing the characters so that I didn't feel lost. I enjoyed seeing the characters team up to fight evil (mostly robots), and my favorite part was probably Mojo Jojo, as he was especially well written and funny.

If you like some or all of these shows, I'd definitely give it a try. It's not high art or something you'll remember forever, but it is fun and will probably make you laugh.

Idk it was kinda bad. No one really felt entirely in-character. Ben and Jack are never really supposed to be referred to as "Ben 10" or "Samurai Jack" in-universe, but they are here several times. Ben also never really uses any of his good transformations. It really just wasn't very engaging at all.

Read in singles. This is PERFECT for any fan of Cartoon Network or any of these shows!!! Personally, it was pure joy seeing Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy meet Mojo Jojo and the Powerpuff Girls meet Dexter. What’s not to love? A really fun crossover that examples the best of these shows! (And an amazing parody title too!)

I love the idea of using some of my favorite Cartoon Network villains like Aku, Mandark and Mojo Jojo together, and the artwork is relatively faithful, but the storyline is just nonsense...even by the standards of the shows themselves, which are already absurd. This just seemed like a lazy way to get the characters together.

A malfunctioning robot crash-lands in Billy and Mandy’s school! Billy wants to keep it, Mandy wants it out, and Grim is just confused. As the robot starts causing havoc, it’s up to our heroes (and Billy) to put an end to the mayhem!

It was fun to see some of my favorite characters from Cartoon Network come together for an epic battle. It kind of reminded of me of Superfriends vs The Legion of Doom. I didn't really like the story but the art was pretty cool.

Received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Disappointed, that is all I can say, seriously disappointed.

Good/Bad Review.

Good:
-The art, perfectly in style with the cartoons and their world. Every one of the group is drawn like they are supposed to do. So Ed, Edd & Eddy look the same as they should look like in the cartoon.
-Seeing all my favourite (and not so favourite) characters back. There are several characters I recognize by name, but I never saw their shows. It is nice to see the Powerpuff girls and Dexter in one setting, that reminds me of the fanfiction I read some years ago, which was totally awesome.
-The action, well, at least for the first part.
-Ed, Edd & Eddy! While I could also go on Nostalgia trip for Powerpuff Girls or Dexter, I still can find stuff from those cartoons, but I haven't seen Ed, Edd & Eddy in years.

Bad:
-The action, it just dragged on and on and it got a bit boring in the middle.
-The constant: What will happen, find out in the next one-shot things. It distracted me and I was also worried that I might not be able to read further. If you make a book that compiles all these one-shots at least get rid of the stuff that says the next one shot will be released (insert date) or that you will have to read the next one-shot.
-The villains plan. Just so lame. But I guess that was to be expected for a kiddie comic.
-What was up with that squirrel? Super evil master mind? Will we find it out in book 2? Which I probably never find unless it gets on Netgalley.
-The story was nice in the beginning, but like with the action it just dragged on and it became silly. I think this works better as an one-shot, and I think it should have stuck to that. That way you keep all the tension and don't lose it.

All in all, I had hoped for more and I am disappointed.

Super Secret Crisis War Volume 1, written by Louise Simonson and illustrated by Derek Charm, brings together five of Cartoon Network’s most beloved heroes to face off against their most dastardly villains.

I never watched Samurai Jack or Ben 10 so the references to that were beyond me other than a basic knowledge that they existed. Other than those bits being beyond me the only thing this comic had going for it was the novelty value of being able to see the characters I grew up loving come together.

The artwork looked exactly like the cartoons I remember watching and the characters were everything I have always loved. Ed, Edd and Eddie are their lovable and goofy selves, Dexter is just as sexist and annoying as always and the Powerpuff Girls shine as always.

The plus side of this being a face off against the villains of the respective cartoons is that I have always loved seeing Mojo Jojo and Mandark so it was fun to see them both.

The biggest problem here is that even with all of their respective worlds in jeopardy I didn’t feel like anything was genuinely at stake and after a while all of the robot fights were just boring. I wish this comic had been as exciting as the shows but there was a spark that just wasn’t there.

I have kids who love many of the characters in this book. Power Puff Girls, Ed, Ed, & Eddy, Dexter, etc. After years of watching these belived cartoons on Cartoon Network, there is the joy of reading the comic with them as the heroes.

In this story, the supervillians have come together and called themselves the League of Extraordinary Villains. The plan is to get robots to attack the heroes and then if they succeed, they will be sent to where the League of Extraordinary Villains is ready to harm them in their home turf.

Full color graphics and silly catch phrases help pass the silly time. If you are looking for a great way to giggle with a child or teen this could be the way. I had fun with my 3 kids, (2 of which are teens now) and we are hoping there will be another to follow.

Comics are making a come back and the best part is a lot of our current TV shows are a part of the new generation that is out there. This book will be available everywhere - including Amazon and I highly recommend the read.

Cuando vi este cómic en Netgalley, con Dexter, The Powerpuff Girls y Ed, Edd & Eddy en la portada, lo primero que pensé fue:

description

Así que, por supuesto, hice click en el pequeño botoncito de read-now. Lamentablemente, no fue lo que me esperaba.

Me gustó:
-Los personajes. Ver a personajes como Dexter y Mojo Jojo juntos, fue como un sueño.
-Los dibujos. Son una belleza, fieles a los originales y SUPER coloridos.

No me gustó:

This was a trip down memory lane. As as kid I used to watch Cartoon Network until it suddenly stopped broadcasting in the Netherlands. Heartbroken, I was, as a was a really big fan of especially The Power Puff Girls. One year for 'Carnaval' my younger sisters and I dressed up like them in costumes made by my mother. Its fanfiction was also my first attempt at writing something (I guess I was around 8 years old and as you can possibly imagine: It was of amazing quality!).

So when I saw this title advertising a mash-up between so many of my childhood-favs I could not but request it. And it was good to see them again. They team up to save the world from a team of cooperating super-villains. Even if the story wasn't too great and quite predictable, I still enjoyed reading it and I think more people will simply based on the memories it brings back...

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Revisit some of your favorite Cartoon Network heroes as they come together in this comic book series to save their worlds! Samurai Jack, Ben Tennyson, the Powerpuff Girls, Dexter and Ed, Edd and Eddy have to work together when their respective villains band together to annihilate their worlds using a doomsday machine. Well. Most of the villains are on board with this plan, but a couple of them are not as enthusiastic. The book also address the different levels of villainy that the “bad guys” possessed, which range from evil genius to total annihilator. There’s definitely a difference between Aku level evil and Mojo Jojo level evil.

It’s so much fun to see the different animation styles on the same page, since each of the worlds is drawn in a unique way. The team-ups in this book are also enjoyable, and I really liked seeing Jack and Bubbles work together. This book is for anyone who loves Cartoon Network and its more “classic” shows. Thank you to Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me to access this galley.

My 10 year old and I had an absolute blast reading this together. We assigned characters to read and had so much fun sharing lines and acting out the adventure. The best part was all the different characters together. Each new page held another new character we'd never seen interact with each other and my ten year old was left laughing and loving it.

I will definitely buy this for her so we can enjoy it again!

I read this with my son, he enjoyed it although he was unfamiliar with most of the cartoons referenced in it, it was fun to see interactions been the characters from different universes like Dexter and Mojo Jojo. It was awesome seeing all the shows I had loved in the past although not really a big fan of Ben 10. If they make a series of just Aku and Mojo Jojo teaming up and crushing all who oppose them with grandiose soliloquies I would be one happy camper.

This comic is a perfect mixture of the things I love and that give me complete nostalgia. I can't say I didn't love just about every minute of the series. I recall the announcement of the massive crossover.

If you were a kid of the 90s-00s and loved these cartoons the comic is right up your alley. It's fun and brings together a lot of characters you miss.

I'm just wanting more Billy and Mandy ASAP in my life.

A shockingly dull trek through nostalgia.

I love cartoons. I love the oldies from the 70s and I love the modern ones from today. I also love the ones from the early 2000s, which in many ways crafted the "golden age of animation" that sadly came to an end with the ending of Regular Show and announced ending of Adventure Time. I also love a good crossover. Who doesn't love a hero from your favorite show standing up to a villain from another show? It can be badass if done well.

Sadly, the comics do not do this well.

To put it simply, my biggest gripe with the comic is the lack of balance. It has a great roster of Samurai Jack, The Powerpuff Girls, Dexters Laboratory, The three Eds and...oddly enough, Ben Tennyson, which just seems a bit to modern given the rest but oh well, it's cool. Sure, it's not exactly a slam dunk team (I would've loved to have seen Grim, Finn or Nigel to join the fray, outside of the oneshots), but it's still cool. Sadly, the team doesn't have a good team dynamic going at all.

In the Justice League, not all members are equally fast nor strong. Batman ain't no Superman and Green Arrow ain't no Flash, but in the same sense, Wonder Woman ain't no Question. The point is, each member brings something to the table. Superman brings strength and speed, Batman brings his detective skills, Flash brings his speed and Martian Manhunter brings his unique powers.

In this comic however, the team dynamic doesn't feel fulfilled or fleshed out. Jack, The Powerpuff Girls and Ben do basically all the work and Dexter spends most the comic complaining and the three Eds are just kind of...there. It feels like such a wasted opportunity. I know the Eds aren't superheroes empowered by Chemical X, nor do they wield a magical sword, but c'mon, how many feats of superhuman strength as Ed pulled off before? How many unrealistic doohickey's has Double D made before? How cunning has Eddy been shown to be? They have their own qualities that they could've added to the team, but instead they're put on the sideline, never really having a moment of awesome.

The lack of balance is twofold for the villains as well. Aku and Vilgax are very imposing and are great villains here. Unfortunately, Mandark and Mojo Jojo are treated like sidekicks (hell, Mandark is even an "intern"). What I love about Mojo Jojo as a villain is that he can either come off as a major joke or the most diabolical villain you'll ever see, all depending on how good his plan is at the time. However incompetent he may be, he's a threat that is not to be trifled with. Annoyingly, they took the easy way out and made him a joke, and not a particularly funny one either.

As I mentioned before, they also made Mandark a joke, but to be far, Mandark was a competent villain played for laughs in his respective series. His young age makes sense for them to treat him as an intern, so that point makes sense. Still, I wish they played up the fact that Mandark is still a legitimate serious threat. Hell, he even destroyed a planet at one point!

Horrible balancing between the factions aside, how well does the other aspects of the comic hold up? Well, it's a mixed bag from this point onward.

The plot is about as cliche as it gets. A bunch of supervillains get together and do evil things. We don't really get a reason as to why or even how, it just sort of happens. I find the loyalties; or often the lack there of; in these kind of stories to be rather interesting and engrossing. Whether or not they're bad guys tied together with a bond of brotherhood and respect, or a simple desire to cause chaos. Here? It's the ladder, and done rather poorly at that. We just know they're evil and doing evil for the sake of evil. I wouldn't mind that angle to be honest....if they had fun with it. But Aku and Vilgax sadly do not ham it up to much.

Outside of villainous politics, the plot is about the group of aforementioned cartoon characters joining forces. It's not really teaming up per say, more like "wrong place, wrong time" kind of deal as they're all kidnapped by the villains. I honestly hate this angle. It makes the fact that they're joining forces feel much less rewarding and it overall limits the team dynamic, once again. Wouldn't it have been cool if Dexter, or even Ben to had foreseen such an event and used technology to call out to others? Wouldn't have been awesome to see Double D picking up on that signal and suiting up with his own makeshift weaponry (See: "The Eds are Coming"). Wouldn't have been freaking amazing to see the Kids Next Door pick up on the same signal and join in the action? There's so much story potential that was wasted on the easiest and quickest possible method.

As a whole, the comic overall lacks the same feeling that the shows give off and never goes into the more human and tender aspects of the shows. We don't see the strong, brotherly bonds the Eds share with one another, we don't see the sisterly love between the Powerpuff Girls, we don't see Jack's conflicting nature. We just see the most basic personality traits of each character as they fight evil. We don't even get character development or bond-building between the characters. It feels all very artificial and mechanical. Not to mention how out of character the Eds are. Once again, it feels like they took the easiest way out in making a cartoon about classic cartoons teaming up.

The saving grace of the comic is the artwork...sort of. For the most part, the artwork is quite good! Most characters look on model and look like how they did in the shows. The way each character is drawn also makes the artistic clash a bit less jarring. I say a bit because Ben still looks rather out of place in comparison to the rest, but it's not that distracting. What is distracting is the Eds. My god they look awful. I feel like they were trying to mimic the rough, never-on-model style of the show, but they didn't get what made the style work. It's really hard to explain why the style in the show is so memorable and entertaining, but just take a look at any page featuring the Eds and they look horrid.

I do have to give kudos where kudos is due, however. I love the fact that Cartoon Network doesn't forget about their classics the same way Nick tries to do. We still get comics and even video games for the oldies, when Nick can't be bothered to make a "Nicktoons Unite" game anymore. It does show that they respect, or at the very least, market to the older fans such as myself, instead of catering scummy business practices to kids. I would love to see a comic like this attempted once again, but with a lot more care, love and passion as the concept is just freaking awesome! Theirs a fan comic called "Powerpuff Girls Doujinshi" that is effectively a crossover of...everything in Cartoon Network history and it's done with passion and love for the source material. I highly recommend it over this.

All in all, this is a rather mediocre slog and not the awesome adventure it could've been.
