Family Ties #1

Tagging Bases

Rate this book
Charlie McManus has spent his life chasing one to become a Major League Baseball player. But for his best friend, Daniel Hollingsworth, his future—working for his father on Wall Street—was set in stone long before his first breath.

On New Year's Eve, a reckless dare lands them behind bars with Harrison Price, a free-spirited graffiti artist and rebel among Manhattan's elite. When Harrison proposes a kiss at midnight, none of them could have imagined that ringing in the new year together would feel so good.

What was meant to be a fleeting encounter in the city that never sleeps quickly turns into an unexpected and unconventional relationship when their paths cross again.

In a world where conformity reigns, Charlie, Daniel, and Harrison must decide whether love is shaped by fate or simply the choices they're willing to make.

Only one thing is for sure...in the game of love, tagging bases isn't as easy as it seems.

Tagging Bases is a spicy MMM friends-to-lovers sports romance with a guaranteed HEA. While it is the first book in the Family Ties series, it can be read as a standalone.

**This is an ARC review**

I am very conflicted with this review.

So I’ll start here, this book had amazing potential. The characters themselves were good. They each had me laugh at some point. The chapter names were the best.

New Year’s Eve 2 best friends get arrested, they meet the third MMC in a jail cell. After counting down to midnight they kiss each other. But then it jumps to 3 months later? And they’re all still thinking about that night after all that time and nothing happens. The best friends even live together!

I get the one MMC had a girlfriend but it wasn’t working and they break up but why not tell your best friend whom you’ve been thinking about differently now or the other MMC you want things to happen instead of keeping quiet only for the best friend to be told by the ex at a frat party while you and MMC3 were having sex at a party both of you had to be at for appearances for your rich parents?

Then it jumps to like 3 weeks later. It takes the best friends forever to admit feelings for each other but where did the feelings come from? They had one kiss.

BUT I feel like when a book is labeled MMM there should be some MMM spicy scenes and more scenes of them all together even outside of the spice. The first time any of them hook up it’s only 2 of them. Only at the end we got a quick jerk off session that included all 3.

Each character just had their own separate relationships with the other but all called themselves boyfriends.

There was so much in the background of the book I feel like you didn’t get their relationship build up or anything other than that one kiss they became infatuated with each other and that was that. There’s a lot about the brother Roy too. I just feel like there was too much going on around them and not enough about them together - sex or no sex.

"Kissing them was an explosion of sensation. Daniel's stubble scraping against my skin, his large hands gripping my hips possessively. Harrison's hard planes of muscle pressed into me as he drove his tongue deeper down my throat. It was utterly addicting, like a drug I never knew I craved until that first hit. As much as I try to deny it, that night unleashed something inside of me. Desire, curiosity, a desperate yearning to experience that rush again. To feel their hardness again."

i. book review
Welcome to New York — Taylor Swift

While this was a very enjoyable book, it was SOMEWHAT flat for me... I feel like sometimes the characters were just very bland and I never connected with the characters. This was my first time reading a throuple MMM romance book and honestly, I would've probably eaten it up had Harrison NOT just been an add-on to Daniel and Charlies relationship, 2 friends falling in love would've been *CHEF'S KISS* but they both so quickly fell in love with Harrison and it didn't feel all that realistic.

This definitely is the perfect book for low-angst and a (SOMEWHAT) fluffy MMM romance. It was a more mindless read where i didn't really have to worry about the characters which i enjoy A LOT!! Some of the romantic scenes where SOO cute and well written, i loved almost all of them (besides you park bench scene... you aren't included (but you were somewhat funny in the end.))

ii. quotes

“I drift off to sleep, my mind swirling with images of Charlie and Daniel. The way Charlie's dimples appear when he laughs, the sensation of Daniel's strong arms around me. The taste of their kisses and the throbbing between their legs. I don't know what the future holds for us, but I do know one thing. I'm not letting go of this, of them, without a fight. We've come too far and been through too much to let the opinions of others tear us apart. “

“He laughs, his eyes shining with pride and exhilaration. With the late afternoon sun illuminating his figure and a baseball helmet slightly askew on his head, I realize that I'm absolutely smitten with this man.“

Tagging Bases ⚾
Firstly,I want to thank LoveNotes Pr & Christopher J. Brice, for trusting me with this ARC!

This book is not you classic romance,it is a story of uncoditional love, acceptance & freedom.
Starting this one,I was a little bit hesitant, with how it will come to paper, even Brice did not dissapoint me at all.His way of unfolding the events that are occuring between the pages of Tagging Bases, was something else.Specifically, vivid images and slow burn romance will fill your heart, after opening this story.
His main characters, were nothing else than perfect.Three boys from such different bagrounds, with family drama always going on,want only love, yet the prestige that they must have tries to keeps them away, while fate will always find a way to bring them back together.Harrison, Charlie & Daniel are THE definition of the term meant to be.We are watchers of a slow, although passionate romance between those boys that literally are defying all odds. The way their love is unravelled through action & words had my heart melting, while,of course, they share intimate moments that will have you screaming.
Personally,it has became one of my favourite romances of the genre, mostly because we see how love has no limits,no borders, and no way to to avoid it.
Out one July 3⚾

This book had everything I typically love, but fell a bit flat for me. For a book that wasn't a novella, I think I needed a bit more depth to the characters themselves. I spent a lot of time reading about what was happening in their day, but not as much within their minds. A few things were said by characters that put me off kind of early on, but I wouldn't say it was a total game changer. And probably not even a huge deal to others, but didn't fit the mold for how I had already started to shape the characters in my head. There's still a lot of potential here and I could see myself absolutely loving future works by the author. 🖤

**ARC Review**

Overall, the book was 2.5-3 stars for me. The story seemed a bit rushed and overly optimistic in terms of the situation in which the characters were in, especially in a small town where one of the main characters is from. The book states it is MMM however, the book had only one scene with all 3 of the characters and it was pretty tame. The spice was there but very short, the characters seemed distracted and it was only ever two of them. The book is more of a rom-com and focuses heavy on one of the main characters “hairy butt”. There could have been a lot more tension involved given 2/3 of the characters backgrounds as well as a plethora of different emotions. The story was mostly there, I wasn’t sure exactly what the author was trying to “say” in the book, this may not be my typical genre of books but I don’t feel my opinions are that far off. I had higher hopes for the book and the banter definitely upped my rating, just didn’t quite hit the mark I was expecting.

I wanted to like this but it felt disorganized and wildly unbelievable. In this story we get two friends who fall for a third and they become a throuple. Cool. Love to everyone.

I think if you’re looking for a nonsensical HEA that doesn’t go too deep, this might scratch that itch? Maybe.

A lot didn’t work me. The timeline, the consistency in the characters, the dialogue. I’m not sure if it’s meant to cheeky but it wasn’t for me. Love it for those that it’s for.

Tagging bases, main characters are Charlie, Daniel and Harrison. I am not going to lie I had really high hopes for this book. It lacked depth in character relationship. Charlie and Daniel are friends who also happen to play on the same baseball team and have known each other for years. Harrison is the 3rd element to this MMM book. Now I've got nothing against throuple's in fact, you do you boo. The chance encounter with Harrison and then the bi-awakening/gay-awakening was greatly depicted in the beginning but lacked the emotional depth I was looking for. It felt like Harrison was just a 3rd element in the story when he was supposed to be apart of the relationship.

What I didn't jive with is they just decided to be together and the forward movement after that. It felt a bit rushed near the end even though I am all for happy ever after's it felt like they author just wanted to put it nicely in a bow. I read a lot of RH/Why Choose books as well as diverse character representation and this book just felt like it needed a bit more in the overall character development & relationship development between these three as a throuple.

Thank you to Love Notes PR and the author for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book was very surface level for me with everything… characters, depth, plot… I feel like I didn’t know much about the main characters at all, just enough. It also felt like Daniel and Harrison was the couple and- oh right! Charlie.

I will say, the beginning had me intrigued with the book, but I started to notice how the characters feel very immature. Charlie. Don’t get me started with the thing with Roy towards the end too😒✋🏽 Honestly I can’t tell if it’s the fact that I didn’t feel like I was reading about men that’s bothering me or the fact that I felt like I was reading about teenagers…

Quotes that had me🤗

-My heart flutters at the thought of a romantic picnic with Daniel. Burrowing into the hoodie, I shyly smile and say, “I’d like that.”

Shyly😃

-“Well, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in,” he drawls, his voice dripping with amusement.

🚪🏃🏽‍♀️

-“Promise?” I say, waggling my eyebrows.

🥺🎀🥺

Okay that’s it. It took me till half way to really start questioning everything because the love was fast and I truly felt no connection🥲 I have no hate towards the author and I’m grateful for the opportunity to get the advanced reader copy but unfortunately, this wasn’t for me!

Just finished this book and here is my Arc Review — this book had potential, it’s definitely a soft sweet sports romance, but honestly, it didn’t fully hold my attention. I was expecting more from the relationship dynamics (especially with the suggestion of MMM), but it mostly stayed MM and felt a little underdeveloped in that area. I found myself losing interest as the story went on. However, the connection between the characters was easy to root for.

That said, I think readers who enjoy quieter, low-conflict romances might connect with it more than I did. Grateful to have received an ARC!

What to expect:
• Friends to Lovers
•Double Bi-Awakening
•Found Family
•Low Angst
•MMM
•No Third Act Breakup
•Multi-POV
•Baseball Romance

This book was…interesting. It started off strong, and then delved into what I think was an attempt at slow burn. The chemistry was bland between the characters and the romance simultaneously took forever and felt incredibly rushed.
I’m not someone who needs a 3rd act breakup, but there wasn’t any real conflict for the characters to face. I thought for sure that Harrison’s perpetual singleness would come in to play but nope, that was dropped. I just feel like there were a lot of missed opportunities.
And then the worst offense.
Don’t write about a throuple, if you’re not going to include throuple sex!
All that to say, it was an easy and quick read, and it did have some moments I enjoyed. They were just outweighed by moments I didn’t enjoy

this is an ARC review, thank you LoveNotes for sending it to me 🙏🏼

while I'm no strange to BL and MM romances, this wasn't it for me.

first, it felt too insta love, they shared a kiss, together, and we have a timejump of 3 months where during it, apparently, the 3mmcs couldn't stop thinking about it (why i say apparently? cause it was told to us, not shown, and I'm a Show don't tell person)

secondly, I'm a no cheating gal, and i know guys, but emotional cheating still cheating.

i felt like there was too much going on at the same time.

also, in 294 pages, the word "ass" was said a total of 57 times, was it necessary?

I really enjoyed how this book made me feel at the end. With the state of our current world, it was nice to escape into the world where Charlie, Daniel and Harrison live and get to share in their love story.

I like the way Christopher Brice adds little call backs to previous parts of the story but if I never have to read the word "mankini" again it might be too soon. This book takes place in an ideal world and if you are looking for long-drawn out conflict, this is not for you. This book will make you smile, tear up, get frustrated and then smile again.

If you are looking for a Queer (MMM) romance that will leave you satisfied and with a smile Tagging Bases is for you.

omg this was such a quick, fun ( & spicy 👀🌶️) read!!

i loved charlie, daniel & harrison and how their personalities just fit together 🫶🏻 it felt really organic & i’m ALWAYS here for a good friends-to-lovers ( to maybe more?? 👀 ) situation.

the family acceptance parts were really sweet & made my heart warm && the “gay awakening” vibes were so good 🌈

it touched on some heavy stuff but in a real way ANDDDD even though a few lines were a lil cringey 🙈 it didn’t take away from how solid and addicting this was. i def need more charlie + daniel in the next book bc their dynamic was everything 😭

it’s mm, sports romance, friends to lovers, with SPICE that is spicing 🩷

if you want something easy, quick & fun that’ll have you kicking your feet, this is it!!

Tagging Bases is Charlie, Daniel and Harrison's story of love and learning to be yourself. Charlie and Daniel are college baseball teammates and best friends. On New Years Eve they end up in jail and meet Harrison and end up sharing a new year's kiss. A couple months go by and they run into Harrison again. The sparks are still there and they try to be friends. That only lasts so long before they all realize they want to do this together.
All three have some self doubts about themselves and where their lives are headed. Being together, they learn to love themselves as well as each other. They all support each other fully.

This book was a pretty easy read. I loved Charlie, Daniel and Harrison. They are perfectly matched with their different personalities to where it’s cohesive. It was nice to see a book where some of the families were really accepting of their relationship because that’s usually not common in most MM books I’ve read. The only thing I’m still confused about is how are they considered a throuple when we didn’t get really many smut scenes of them all together, or dates? It was very separate relationship wise.

I literally COULD NOT put this down once I started it.
A dare on New Year’s Eve lands best friends Charlie and Daniel in hot water where they share a kiss with Harrison and it basically tilts their entire world’s axis. This was such a fun story about three men discovering their feelings for each other and how well they fit together. I loved how supportive and understanding the three of them always were with each other. The spice in this is CRAZY HOT and there’s plenty of it. This is so much more than just the spice though. It’s a really funny and emotional story and it was done really beautifully. The ending was absolutely perfect. I’ll absolutely be reading the rest of this series.

I got this as an ARC but all opinions are my own!

This was a quick, cute (spicy) read. Loved the characters, loved the development of the story, and the relationship between Harrison, Daniel and Charlie. It also touched on some very real issues which I thought were handled well. Some of the lines felt a bit cringey but overall a really solid read!

I’m kind of all over with this. I enjoyed it enough that I finished it. I struggled though because I never felt a connection between the three MC’s. Not where they are all together as equal partners, all interested in each other and a true thruple. There just wasn’t enough material with the three of them together, intimately or in daily life. If this is redone/expanded I’d give it another read.

Finished this ARC read, "Tagging Bases" by
author Christopher Brice and I really enjoyed it. Its the first book in the series. I cannot wait to read more. I NEEEEEEEEED more of Charlie and Daniel. I felt much more connected to their relationship and their past than I did Harrison's. It just seems more realistic and organic to me, and I live for a good friends to lovers. Hopefully we get some more exploration of Charlie and Daniel in the next book because there is so much potential there. It’s a great, quick and easy read. It’s MMM, Sports Romance, Gay Awakening, Friends to Lovers, and the spice is spicing👌🏼👌🏼

I received this book as an ARC and in return am giving an honest review.

This was a quick and easy read, and very funny at times. However, I really wanted to enjoy this story more. My biggest gripe would be that it felt very superficial. Where there was room for deeper emotions and connections, instead of expanding on them, they felt rushed and impatient. At times I felt like I was being walked through someone’s day to day life without any emphasis on the important things. I still give this story 3 stars, though, because the concept and the characters are there and understandable, it just, again, felt superficial.

First off, Charlie is the sweetest little golden retriever ever!! You can tell that the relationship between him, Daniel and Harrison is all sparks from the start!! I loved seeing the support between their friends and family, for the most part, and watching them tackle the hardships together as a team.

I signed up for this ARC on a whim for sure. The premise sounded interesting, and I haven't read many MMM novels. Daniel, Charlie, and Harrison were such great MCs, and I loved Charlie and Daniels friendship so much. I'm a sucker for a good friends-to-lovers story, and theirs is top notch. I loved how Harrison also balanced them out in a way that was different but very believable. It creates an interesting but authentic dynamic. My only issue was that the story seemed to die off after about 80%, and there was no real conflict there. There were things that *could* have been interesting situations and conflicts, but they were instead kind of brushed over. The story would have benefitted more from having them fleshed out.

Thank you to Christopher J. Brice and Love Notes PR for giving me an advanced reader copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review!

There was a LOT about this book I loved and but also things about this book that I didn't. Overall, I would recommend this book if you are looking for a light-hearted, easy read for MMM fans (although this felt more like a why choose than a throuple book) with a side of baseball and pretty much zero conflict.

The three characters in this book are Charlie McManus, Daniel Hollingsworth, and Harrison Price. Charlie is from a small town and is your typical golden retriever - happy, easygoing, and dependable. Daniel Hollingsworth is from a rich family, and he's a rule follower and a planner. Both Charlie and Daniel go to the same college and play baseball and are roommates and best friends. Then we have Harrison, another high society kid but unlike Daniel, his parents see him as an accessory and he's basically the black sheep of the family. He's closed off, doesn't trust people, a bit of a loner, and an artist.

Through a chance meeting on New Year's Eve after a dare gone wrong between Charlie and Daniel (which never really made sense why they'd be arrest for this...but I digress), they meet Harrison in jail (who is arrested for tagging buildings). Harrison dares all of them to kiss at midnight, and they all agree.

The kiss changes something inside both Charlie and Daniel, and both realize over the next few months that they want more of it. Daniel probably had more of an "ah-ha" moment - he had long suspected he liked guys, but it was nice to see the thought process of both Daniel and Charlie as they came to terms with liking the kiss more than they thought they would and being attracted to guys.

They randomly run into Harrison again three months later, and from there, both realize they have feelings for Harrison and each other. The book explores them all deciding to date each other and for Charlie and Daniel, explore a new side of themselves they didn't really know existed (double bi-awakening).

There were a lot of cute scenes, and the spicy scenes were decently done and the chemistry was on point (other than my complaint below about no MMM spicy scene). I absolutely loved the scenes with both Charlie's and Daniel's families and Harrison - finding the love and acceptance he didn't get from his own family.

But, I can't rate this above three stars because there was quite a bit I didn't like:

To begin, the pacing was very slow and we were nearly 2/3 of the way into the book before Charlie figured out he liked guys, and more than 2/3 of the way into the book before we really got to them exploring their throuple relationship (see below for more - this didn't really feel like a throuple / MMM book but rather a why choose).

My other complaint is the arrest scenes. They felt unnecessary and the first one made absolutely no sense other than to drive the three of them together. None at all. Nor did what happened during the arrest, where the scenes unnecessarily escalated in a way that didn't feel realistic. I would have liked any meeting between the three more than this one. The second arrest scene was meant as a bookend to the first, but again, I read it and just felt it was unnecessary to their story as it didn't advance the plot.

Without spoilering what happened, the scene where Charlie first decides to explore his sexuality was incredibly disappointing. This was his first MM experience and it felt so cheap, especially compared to Daniel's, and it made me sad for him. By contrast, Daniel's first MM experience was sweet and cute.

I also did not like that it never crossed Charlie and Daniel's mind to get Harrison's number and they just relied on random encounters of running into him weeks and months apart...yet they decided they both wanted to date him (and each other) without really knowing ANYTHING about him and weeks or months between interactions. I felt like that undervalued Harrison's importance and it was a curious reaction considering they both decided they were into each other based on years of friendship.

Too many public sex scenes. I like the concept that they couldn't keep their hands off each other, but the way it was executed detracted from their relationship and made it feel less special between them when all of their hookups were reduced to these very public moments.

The side plot of Charlie's brother was confusing. He was so secretive, I really thought his secret was going to be that HE was gay and had been hiding that from Charlie. But it wasn't that and when the reason for his secrecy finally came to light, it fell flat. Again, something that just felt unnecessary to the story and was a bit of a let down. It would have been more impactful if the secret had been that he was hiding he was gay, because then it would have allowed the brothers to connect.

I also found the easy acceptance of EVERYONE (other than Harrison's parents) to be unrealistic, particularly everyone in Charlie's very small, very rural town. We keep being told that not everyone will so easily accept them...but we only see people accept them easily other than Harrison's parents who have already shown themselves to be the villains in this story. While I appreciated this was an easy read, there was literally NO conflict at all. It made the story fall flat.

By contrast, wee then had Harrison's parents' reaction, which, while not unexpected given the rest of the book, again fell flat since he pretty much already didn't have much to do with him. Plus, them cutting him off had no relevance since he already didn't depend on them or their money.

Daniel's career choice really confused me. It seemed to come out of left field and seemed like it was the OPPOSITE of what he should have chosen.

I did not need an update on Olivia (Daniel's ex-girlfriend that we see in the first 1/2 of the book) in the epilogue. She really served no purpose in the story after the first 1/4, yet we continued to see her.

Finally, and my biggest complaint of this book, is that this never felt like a MMM book. I recognize that each throuple has different dynamics, but the three of them only ever interacted as couples, and never a threesome. This felt more like a "why choose" because they acted like they wanted to date multiple people individually than act as a throuple. I appreciated that both Charlie and Daniel got to know Harrison on their own - I actually thought that was sweet - but I would have loved to see more of a dynamic between all three of them (especially a spicy MMM scene).

Also, I really would have liked to have seen any type of boundary-setting conversation with them when it came to this new dynamic (something that was new for all three characters). Instead, they just hooked up separately without ever talking about whether there would be jealousy, etc., then later casually mentioned it to the third person weeks later. It seemed unrealistic to me that all three of them would have just been FINE with that. And again, no scenes with all of them.

Overall rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (cute story, easy read, but no real depth to the story)
Storyline: ⭐⭐ (there was no real plot here)
Main Characters: ⭐⭐⭐ (the characters were fine but I didn't swoon over anyone)
Side Characters: ⭐⭐ (very little development of side characters, and their presence frankly did nothing to advance the story)
Spice: 🌶️🌶️ (decent number of scenes, but the scenes weren't very detailed)
