This book, due out late Feb. 2008 is the debut novel from my friend Jean Marie Pierson. It's a sassy version of the "small-town girl meets big city" genre and is a fun romp of a read. I was having flashbacks of my own breezy twentysomething years in the big apple at every turn, and pined for the days when all you needed were your 3 best gals and a dream. But unlike some other chick lit reads, this one has a bit of a bite with some nice moments of quirkiness, humorous comebacks, a little magic, and an unexpected dark twist. So go check it out. You'll find yourself smiling and with a renewed love of what it is to be young and free in big bad ol NYC.
Oh, and in full disclosure, I shot the author photo on the back cover, and designed the website at www.nogoodgirls.com, which has some fun interactive features!
Geri O'Brien works for a publishing house while collecting rejections for her screenplay. She hangs out with her best friends, Maria, Emmy and Sally and they collectively wonder when they will get their New York Minute.
Maria is a cop looking for action but stuck on the quiet day-shift, Emmy is nursing an unrequited crush and Sally wants a promotion and a man.
While the plot has plenty of action, thrills and slapstick humour, the real strength of this book is Geri's voice. I just loved it. She is an individual, funny

I wish you could give half stars, as this book is falling squarely between 3 and 4 for me. It definitely was not one of my favorite reads, but I still enjoyed it and thought it was fun.
I found the fact that Geri, at age 27 (or so), still had such a "fleshed out" imaginary friend a bit odd.
I did like her relationship with her friends and some of the scenes in the book were LOL funny! The author also had lots of very witty one-liners. She is clearly a talented writer. It reminded me of "Sex in the City" without all the sex and with much younger characters.
Since a friend and co-worker wrote this, I would have had to give this five stars anyway...but fortunately, it was very good! On its arrival Friday night from Amazon, my boy picked it up off the front table and, within a page, was laughing aloud. I've since stolen it back to read myself (obviously) but I, too, genuinely enjoyed the humor and wit of this novel. And it helped that I could hear Jean talking the whole time ;-)
I thought it was a breezy view of life in the big city for the twenty-something single girl. There were some zany twists and even a touch of seriousness thrown into the mix. Overall, I felt the characters and their interaction were real. I have best friends, that I've had since grade school, and I could definitely see some parallels to the history behind the friendships. A good read.
I was enjoying it, but it started to lose points for me because it felt like everything was rushed at the end of the book...and it seems like the author switched writing styles in the middle of the book - she went from spelling everything out to being more mysterious - I was confused during the epilogue part - I mean, I think I get it, but it was written strangely.
Total Deja Vu while I was reading this... So either I read this before and never added it to my shelves OR it was made into one of those cutsy lifetime movies... It was good for a quick little chick-lit read.
So much fun! Everything you want in a fun, beach read. Pierson writes snappy dialogue and hilarious throw-away lines... Chicklit? Romance? Whatever - it's a blast to read!
