Celestial Beings: Divine Entities & Cosmic Myths | Indian Mythology, History & Folktales | Cultural Stories for Kids & Adults | Amar Chitra Katha | Children Books | Story Books
The universe of the Puranas, the Vedas and the Epics are peopled with gods and goddesses, asuras and rakshasas, sages and warriors. But there is another dimension. One that is filled with celestial beings. These celestial beings, either divine or semi-divine, possess magical powers and act as messengers, entertainers, courtiers and helpers to the devas and asuras.
Amar Chitra Katha brings you stories of Apsaras and Gandharvas, celestial dancers and musicians who delighted audiences with their music and dance. Yakshas and Yakshis, the ancient spirits of the forest and rivers, revered as the bringers of fertility and prosperity. Vidyadharas, adept in all the sciences and secret mysteries, and always called upon to help in times of crisis. Kinnaras, bird-like creatures, adept at music and magic. Born to a particular role, these celestial beings face challenges and stand against adversity.
Read here, among others, the stories of Kubera; a Yaksha and the lord of wealth, Menaka; an Apsara and the mother of Shakuntala, and Tumburu; a Gandharva who was cursed to turn into an ogre.
This is a great collection of stories. I have only one thing to add - there is no Bindi for various women in this book. For example, Yashoda on page 21, Tilottama on page 66. Please correct that in the future. The lack of Bindis has put me off. As this book is related to Hindu mythology please don’t miss that.
