This book… it doesn’t hit you all at once. It settles in slowly, almost gently, and then before you realize it, you’re carrying the weight of it with you. When The Heart Breaks Twice is one of those stories that feels heavy in a very real, very human way like it’s not trying to overwhelm you, but it also refuses to let you look away from the harder emotions.
Ben and Antonia aren’t characters you just read about, they feel lived in. There’s a depth to both of them that comes from everything they’ve already survived long before the story even begins. With Ben, there’s this quiet kind of grief that lingers in everything he does. It’s not loud or dramatic, but it’s always there, shaping the way he moves through his life, the way he holds onto the past while trying to figure out what moving forward even looks like.
And Antonia… she carries her pain in a completely different way. Where Ben feels more open, even in his struggle, Antonia feels guarded, controlled, almost untouchable at times. But underneath that, you can feel how much she’s holding back. It’s not that she doesn’t feel, if anything, it’s the opposite. It’s that everything she’s built around herself is designed to keep those emotions contained, managed, and out of reach.
What really stood out to me was how their dynamic doesn’t rely on instant connection or easy understanding. It’s layered. There’s tension there, but it’s not the kind that comes from surface-level conflict. It’s deeper than that, rooted in how differently they’ve learned to cope, how they approach loss, and how hesitant they both are to let anyone truly see them as they are now.

Then there's Antonia Cole, a woman who has built an impressive career while carrying her own complicated relationship with loss and the consequences of difficult decisions. When Ben and Antonia's worlds collide, their connection becomes about far more than attraction.
What I really appreciated about this story was that it doesn't pretend healing is simple. Both characters have histories that shape who they are, and neither can simply forget the past and move forward. Their journey forces them to question their choices, confront uncomfortable truths, and consider what they genuinely want from the future.
I especially loved the themes of accountability and second chances. Sometimes there isn't a perfect decision or a completely right answer, and the book explores what happens when people have to live with the consequences of choices made in difficult circumstances.
Ben's journey particularly tugged at my heart. Watching someone who has spent so long living for others begin to consider what his own future could look like was incredibly moving.
Antonia is equally compelling, especially because her strength doesn't mean she's unaffected by the things she's experienced. There's a vulnerability beneath her determination that made her character feel very human.
This is definitely more than a straightforward romance. It's about grief, healing, responsibility, forgiveness, rebuilding and learning that wanting something for yourself doesn't mean you're betraying the life you had before.

When The Heart Breaks is the fourth and final book in Tennent's Fractured Hearts series. While the books are interconnected, they can be appreciated as standalone stories. This contemporary romance features Dr. Ben Jones and Antonia Cole.
For those who have read the earlier books in the series, you will remember meeting Ben. Ben is a widower. His wife, Bex, passed away several years back. Since then he has devoted his life to his four children - Liam, Ollie, Rose and Savannah. When he isn't working or visiting Bex graveside, he spends time with the kids. His sister-in-law, Amy, encourages him to live his life but he isn't ready. Bex was the love of his life and he misses her every day.
Antonia started Opengate, a company that helps people navigate the bureaucracy that can prevent them from accessing potentially life saving medications. There are difficult decisions to be made every day, but she knows the pain that comes when a loved one is denied hope. Antonia fills her days with work, fully dedicated to Opengate and her mission. It is important for her to always remain in control.
When Ben finds himself with an empty house for an extended period, he decides to use the time to do something he has wanted to do for awhile. He starts working on a plan to create a charity in Bex's memory. He knows he needs a sponsor to fund this dream, which is what brings him to Antonia.
Antonia is navigating a PR nightmare and is advised to donate funds to a charity to help redirect focus. She is provided a list of options, but she doesn't feel that any are a good choice and starts to investigate other options. It turns out that Ben's concept is a good match.
The two work well together, but there is something more, or there could be if Ben can break through Antonia's walls. While bringing Bex's retreat to fruition, both are forced to face the pain of their pasts and open themselves up to possibility for their future.
I enjoyed this final installment to the series. My heart ached for those Bex left behind when she passed so it was nice to see Ben finally more forward, and release some of his grief. It felt like the author offered not just the characters, but her readers, a sense of closure. There are no guarantees, but life is short and we should all try to enjoy every day we have.

The last in what has been a truly amazing series where each story will live with me. Romance, or more importantly love, is not always pretty, perfect or until you both grow old. It can be messy, heartbreaking and for a short time, but it is still love in its rawest form. Each book can be read as a standalone, but each of the couples is an important story in each so I believe you should read them all in order.
You first met Dr Ben Jones in Book 1, and his first love was all those things above, and he has not found it again, devoting his life to his children and wanting every moment to honour his late wife.
Ben decides its is time to build the retreat in Bex's name, so approaches Opengate to help fund this. Antonia Cole is the CEO of Opengate, and she is the true definition of control, not allowing those around to see the pain she has carried for many years, as she strives to provide more opportunities for those who would otherwise have missed out. Advocating and the voice for those who can't. However, there is always those that have to find blame in a no win situation, even after everything is done, and this is her and her company. Meeting Ben she sees the value in what he is wanting to achieve, but also what she has missed out on.
Ben and Antonia share imaginable pain, and a grief that albeit different is shared. They were navigating day to day life, but not truely living. I honestly have loved EVERY SINGLE ONE of these books, each are 5 stars for me, and I urge you that if the triggers are something you can handle, read these books. This book is full of so much emotion, you can feel it on every page. It has felt as though Ben and each one of the characters have been a part of my life. Years after Love Beyond Repair, we revisit Ben Jones, now older and carrying the weight of everything he’s been through as a widower and single father. As he works to build a cancer retreat in honour of his late wife Bex alongside Antonia Cole, the CEO of a medical facilitation organization, they find healing, reflection, and slowly allowing the possibility of moving forward with each other.
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel going back into Ben’s story because of my utter dislike for him in the previous book, but this version of him felt different. You can really see the growth this time around. He’s more mature, more self-aware, and it feels like he’s finally taken the time to learn from his past. I found myself rooting for him in a way I didn’t expect, which really speaks to how much his character has evolved.
“You’re worth every risk I’ll need to take. Jump with me.”
Antonia was SUCH a great addition. She’s calm, grounded, and quietly strong, bringing a sense of balance that the story really needed. I really really really liked her, and honestly, I feel like Bex would have too, which made her presence feel even more meaningful. If there was anyone who I felt could ever hold up to Bex, it was Antonia.
And I can’t help but give a shoutout to Liam…such a sweetheart. You can truly see Bex’s legacy living on through him, in the way he carries himself and the warmth he brings to the family, ugh those moments added so much heart.
Overall, the vibe of this book felt much softer and more healing compared to the first. Where the original story was intense and heartbreaking, this one felt calmer, more reflective, and gave the sense of closure I needed. V.R. Tennent has a way of writing stories that feel real and emotional, and this felt like a gentle, healing conclusion to a very heavy journey.

After a long time of constantly visiting his wife's grace to his kids off getting ready for life and travelling, Ben's about to face more challenges. He wanted his late wife's life to mean something as he assisted others going through stuggles, so he turns who someone who can help.
Antonia is facing trouble with the company she has built, a workaholic looking for a cause and something to put her energy into. Putting all her energy from her own pain and loss into something that could help others.
When one project brings them together, neither of them were ready for how things would lead out, the conflicts they would face when working together to reach their goal, the pain that would seep out of the cracks or the healthing they would both receive from one another.
I never honestly expected to get Ben again as a main character in this series, after his time to shine in the first book that led to loss and heartbreak from the loss of Bex. This book of course caught me interest on how with a love like they had he would open his heart again to the possibility of love, while the next phase of his life regards starting something in memory of his late wife.
The relationship starts out as business, cool and to the point, very factual, lack of emotion. Over time both their stories start to unfurl further, Antonia's background into her own personal struggle and Ben's loss of Bex through his eyes as he adjusts to living every day life four years later.
Btw loved the interview Ben did, it soothed a dark little part of my soul when it came to nosey attention seeking media a-holes.

Just finished When the Heart breaks twice by VR Tennent. It is book 4 of the Fractured Hearts series. It follows Ben from Love beyond Repair after losing his wife Bex (spoiler alert for that book if you haven’t read it) a few years after her passing his kids are off doing their own thing he finds plans for something he wants to create for the families affected by Cancer or other illnesses. A resort in Bexs honour. But he needs funds to help back this project so he gets a meeting with Opengate. A company that is struggling with bad press. But it was built on grief and determination on opening doors for trial medicine. Antonia built Opengate from the ground up after losing her son to cancer at a young age. Then her husband leaving her she threw more of her life into her work. After agreeing to help Ben they slowly became friends and become more. I did like this book maybe not as much as the previous books in the series but I’m happy to see how Ben and the kids are doing. The spice was good story line was good. Just a little too much of a slow burn.

This was Ben’s second story, and after losing Bex, he truly believed he would never love again. Then there is Antonia, who is dealing with the loss of her son and has built strong emotional walls around herself, convinced that closing herself off is the only way to avoid more heartbreak.
When they come into each other’s lives, they both need help in different ways. Slowly, they begin to find comfort and understanding in one another, and it was really beautiful to see how their connection grew from that place of shared grief and healing.
I was so happy to see that Ben got his happily ever after with Antonia. After reading Love Beyond Repair, I was honestly devastated, so this story really healed my heart. For me, it was the perfect ending to the series, and I loved it.

So so good! I have read the other novels in this series and enjoyed them. This novel did not disappoint. I love novels about people getting a second chance at love. I was excited to jump back into this series and it did not let me down. From the first chapter I was pulled back into this series and didn't want to put this novel down. It hurt my heart how both Ben and Antonia have been thru so much loss in their lives. I loved watching them both lowering their defenses and opening their hearts to their second chance at happiness after all they had both been thru in their past. Once I started reading I had a hard time putting this novel down. Such an emotional journey for them both. So good! I can hardly wait to see what this author has coming next.

I received an ARC copy of this book .I love it when a series comes full circle and this book. Ben's heart was broken when his wife passed away and the thought he would never find love again.Antonia lost her son and she thought that people who loved and lost do not deserve to find love and happiness again but in walks Ben and slowly changes her mind through ups and downs they slowly move on from their lost lves and make peace and start to live again like their loved ones would have wanted. This was the perfect ending to the series. I absolutely loved it

Ben was a bit marmite for me. I understood where he was coming from and what he done in book one of this series, i loved to hate him. But he came into his own in this book.
Seeing how brave him and the kids were was simply beautiful read.
And Antonia - my heart ached for her.

Such a powerful and emotional story. I loved every bit of it! My heart broke for both Ben and Antonia. The things they faced... heartbreak, loss, and pain. Reading how their journeys unfold wasn't easy, but to see the growth and healing come out of it was beautiful. They both deserved all the love and happiness.

book four in the Fractured Hearts. this one broke my heart but in a good way. ben and antonia story is about heartbreak and healing. this one is my best one of this series. two broken soul find each other. still navigating their life around the normal days. they have so much to heal but together they shine. loving each other gives them hope of another day.

When The Heart Breaks Twice: Fractured Hearts; Book 4 by VR Tennent. This series does in fact fracture your heart as it did with me when Ben lost Bex. But with book 4, there is redemption and the second chance of moving on. Ben and Antonia are meant to be and their story is one that I really enjoyed and would recommend to others along with the author and the rest of this series.

This book was raw, full of emotion. Heartbreaking but also a book of finding yourself after loss. Two broken souls helping each other mend.
It isn't often I find a book that actually makes me feel sad, but this book got me which is just a testament to how amazing Vr Tennent is.

Wow what an absolutely amazing book. This book tugs at your heart. Ben is getting his second chance after losing Bex years ago. I love Antonia and Ben. This series is just amazing.

I read without reading the previous book because that would be too sad for me. Also, this was probably not the best book for me to read but I did anyway. The grief was written good and the slow burn. My only dislike of this was scare at the end. It wasn’t needed imo.

This is definitely an emotional read. It is such a great book. I found the characters and storyline wonderful and enjoyed this even though I needed my kleenex close by.

My gosh, this book. I knew going in it's not gonna be the straight up romantic story. This is layered so beautifully and written even more amazing. Dr Ben Jones , reeling from the aftermath of losing his love Bex, is picking up the pieces and trying his best to move on. Antonia, who has built a charitable organisation steaming from her own grief.
This story gives that closure to all those hearts which have been through that trauma of losing a loved one. Intense, gritty, thoughtful, emotional and so much more. A must read no matter what. Such a beautiful read this is.
