One heartbreak. One summer. One small town that changes everything.
Following a relationship that leaves Everly Burke broken, she is closed off from love. After her first year of college, she takes a spur-of-the-moment summer trip to a small remote town in northern Maine with her best friend, hoping a new adventure will finally shed the chains of her insecurity.
But then she meets him.
Hux Anderson had plans, and none of them involved Silsby, Maine, or his family's resort. When he is forced to drop out of college and leave a city he loves to return to the hometown that reminds him of his family's struggles and pains, it feels like a death sentence.
And then he meets her.
Can Silsby, Maine, bring two broken humans together? Or will this summer be the season for yet another heartbreak…
Author Jessie Halley’s emotional and unforgettable stories, where love and heartache intertwine with her signature style of bittersweet nostalgia, breathtaking angst, and all-consuming love, offer the perfect reading escape.
Her passion for writing started on an old clunky PC computer and 90’s pop culture, proving the inspiration for her obsession with bad boys, heartache, strong friendships, and happy endings.
Born and raised in New England, her home serves as the location for her stories. When Jessie Halley’s not spending time with her husband and two little boys, tucked away writing, or catching up on broody TV shows you can find her in the garden.
i have been wanting to read this one for a while now because i have become friends with the author through booksta (she is an amazing person!!!) and i am so glad i finally picked this one up!!
the setting is a beautiful maine summer vacation spot on the lake thats filled with so many amazing people and things to do. the vibes in this book were absolutely amazing and i just wish that i could somehow teleport to this resort.
everly was so sweet and awkward and i just wanted to go up to her and give her a big hug. poor girl kept tripping over herself and getting herself into uncomfortable situations 🥲 I enjoyed hux once i got to know him, but for a while i was not his biggest fan. even with his povs, he seemed like a pretty big douche to me, and i know he was supposed to come off that way, but he didn’t win me over until later in the book.
this was so perfect for an atmospheric summer/beachy read!!!
i also adore the author of this book so much and think she deserves all the love and support!!!
☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️
pre read!!
i have been wanting to read this one for a while but since its a summer book, it didn’t feel like the right time. since im currently at the beach (!!!!!!) i decided it was the perfect time to pick this one up!!
the author is so so sweet and deserves all of the love and support!🤍
"I am falling for Hux Anderson, not in a summer crush way. In an all-consuming, heart-racing, ageless love kind of way. And that is not good."
"Do you have any idea what you do to me Everly?"......"No matter what I do, I can't get you out of my fucking head."
"My time here is limited. My time with him is limited."-Only Some Stars Fall, By Jessie Halley
Ahhhhhhh this book! I am kicking and screaming! I am first of all so proud to be writing this review for one of my best friends first published novels. Like what do you mean? Jess this is beyond rad. But what an honor and an absolute delight to be able to say I loved it and I was one of the first to read it. This was my first BETA reading experience and I just loved it.
This is a summer romance. Set in Silsby, Maine. I want to go there. Immediately lol. This is Everlys story. A girl who is in her sophomore year of college and is going with her bestie to work at a summer resort in Silsby.
Enter Hux Anderson. Whewwww baby this man is grumpy and I love him. He runs the resort for his parents and is a no nonsense dude. He also does no commitment and doesn't catch feelings. 👀
Nothing brings me greater joy then seeing a man proven wrong when he is super adamant and stubborn. Neither one of these two are expecting each other. That's what makes it amazing. I love the journey they take together over the summer to discover who they are together and what they could be.
This was such a refreshing read and I need about 5 other books about different characters. Jessie the way you described everything was so beautiful and vivid. I will never be over it. Amazing job my friend. As Richard would say. You are legit now lol.
***ARC Review*** I’m completely blown away that this is a debut novel! Once I started I couldn’t put it down! I’ve never actually been to Maine before but after reading this book, I feel like I have. Silsby, Maine felt like another character in the book along with Hux and Everly. The angst was absolutely chefs kiss 😚, an MMC with a backwards hat 🧢 say less, and the suspense had me having all the theories! I loved it!
“I am falling for Hux Anderson. Not just in a summer crush way. In an all-consuming, heart-racing, ageless love kind of way.”
I absolutely fell for Hux and Everly and this story! I had the honor of reading and reviewing this beautiful story and I can’t even tell you how much I loved it! I read this back in February and the first thing I typed out in my notes was, Explosions! The earth is moving! Eyes watering, slow burn, the tension between these enemies to lovers is so strong I can taste it! Aahhh Everly and Hux bring all the feelings in this beautiful summer romance!
I fell in love with summer romances as soon as I saw Baby and Johnny on the big screen and this story brought back all of those first love feelings. Everly is spending her summer with her best friend working at resort in beautiful Maine! She was not expecting to fall for the broody, backwards hat wearing, son of the owner, but we just can’t help those feelings that nestle their way into our hearts can we?
The story surprised me in a lot of ways. There is a bit of suspense and a mystery going on at the resort. There was a scene where I girl screamed as butterflies filled my stomach and tears filled my eyes. I also loved the descriptions and the details of Maine and the beauty of it. It was like I was there! I am so proud of my best friend Jessie for writing this story and following her dreams in becoming an author. Sis you did it! And I cannot wait for this world to fall in love with your story! Only some stars fall will officially be out June 13 and it is a must read you guys!
What an honor it was to be selected to read this incredible story!
Grumpy meets Timid the perfect Summer Romance!
Only Some Stars Fall is a heartwarming romance novel that truly captivated me from the get-go. The story revolves around Everly, a college student who takes on a summer job at a Maine resort with her best friend. Little did she know that her life would take an unexpected turn when she crosses paths with Hux, a grumpy and aloof man who has always preferred no-strings-attached relationships. That is, until he meets Everly.
Jessie’s debut novel is the epitome of a summer romance. Her vivid descriptions of the Maine resort in Silsby and its surroundings make you feel like you're right there with the characters, experiencing the true nature of the mountains, Lake and the warmth of the sun on your skin. The story is a perfect escape for readers looking to dive into a world of romance and self-discovery.
Jessie’s words weaves an intricate web of emotions, perfectly balancing the tender moments between Everly and Hux with the humorous and tense banter that kept me entertained and quite honestly on the edge of my seat.
Only Some Stars Fall is a must-read for those of contemporary romance. With its engaging plot, relatable characters, and stunning lake and forest setting, this book will leave you with quite a smile on your face and a renewed belief in the power of love. So, grab your sunscreen, a cold drink, and settle in for a summer romance that will have you turning the pages long into the night!
Jess I am incredibly proud of you and can’t wait for the world to meet the world of Silsby!
This book reminded me of biting into a crisp apple. It was so fresh, satisfying, a little tart, and I just couldn’t stop until I devoured the whole thing.
I cannot believe this is a debut novel. I could immediately picture the characters and the setting so thoroughly. As a Mainer myself, some readers may think the small lake-town setting is cliche, but in Maine this is a for real thing. And she does it such justice!
I love Everly and Hux undoubtedly, but I also love the supporting characters in this novel as well. It makes me wish I could really take a trip and be a part of this story in real life! This is a perfect summer read!
Looking forward to more from this author, who I am so lucky to consider a dear friend and who deserves it all, and more!
“I’m a penny thrown down a well, wishing to not break apart when I hit the bottom.”
“I let the silence soak up all the emotion that is in the air, and then we send it away with the breeze.”
“Maybe there is no such thing as wasted time, and maybe it is all part of the journey we are on.”
Only Some Stars Fall is Jessie’s debut novel!! It’s the perfect summer read set in the small town of Silsby, Maine following Everly on a summer trip with her best friend Alex. While in Silsby, she meets Hux Anderson. Backwards hat wearing broody hero 😉
I could not put this book down. I was laughing at some moments and misty eyed at others. This story is filled with nostalgia! As I was reading, images from my own memories were flooding my mind and transporting me back to special moments in my life.
If you have ever visited Maine, you know what it feels like to explore the hidden spots only locals know about and hike the mist covered trails. You know what it feels like to stargaze with your favorite person. You know what it feels like to fall in love with life!
If you have not visited Maine yet, let Only Some Stars Fall be your escape for the summer. It will ignite a spark to travel, explore and be open to new love.
This book has the best summer vibes and I couldn’t wait to read more every night!! Everly and Hux completely drew me in with their rollercoaster of a relationship. And before Hux there was Alexandra, Everly’s best friend. Their friendship is one of my favorite parts in this story. “She is without a doubt my soulmate, and whether I ever find my other half when it comes to romantic love, our friendship will continue to be my anchor.” THIS PART 😭 I will never forget it! Everly and Alexandra are ride or dies!!
Thank you so much for the ARC! I was so excited to read it and you did not disappoint! How is this your debut novel?!?!
There wasn’t a character I didn’t LOVE and enjoy… okay well the one customer from the restaurant can fall into the lake with a few rocks in his pockets… IYKYK.
I loved Hux and Everlywell relationship and all the growth that they BOTH had throughout the book. I have so many question though about some of these other characters and cannot wait to see what Jessie does next!
🌲 Maine setting 🛶 summer 🎣 FMC finding herself 🌲 MMC healing from trauma 🛶 Dealing with grief 🎣 Activities on a dock 🌲 BIRCH 🖤
I read this book to support a fellow Maine author... what I didn't expect was to fall deeply in love with everything about it. Hux... such a swoony, grump! Silsby, Maine... the ideal Maine small lake town. Aurora Lake... you know that lake smell? There's this scene, IYKYK, where I can just imagine that smell... on Hux's bare shoulders. I will recommend this book until the end of my days.
Awww, what a heart-wrenching read! Set in a small town called Silsby, Maine, 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥 followed Everly, a clumsy yet lovable 19-year-old sophomore who worked at a lake resort during her summer vacation, and Hux, a grumpy 22-year-old college dropout who was forced to give up his future in NYC and move back to Silsby to help his family business.
Under Hux’s hot-and-cold façade, he actually had a heart of gold; I loved that Everly got him to open up to her slowly and yet quite effortlessly. There were times I was so mad at Hux for his terrible demeanor but the more I learnt about him, the more empathetic I felt towards him and the burden he carried.
It truly amazed me how Jessie managed to successfully deliver Everly & Hux’s story in this relatively short book (less than 300 pages)! I enjoyed living vicariously through the protagonists’ summer getaways and the happy ending here was just *chef’s kiss*.
Highly recommend this debut!! If you liked grumpy/sunshine, small town, emotional scars, and bonfire parties, this book is for you!
Lastly, congrats to Jessie for releasing such an incredible DEBUT!! Getting to see her transform from a fellow book lover/avid reader to a debut author truly made it all the more special. I'm so, so proud of you, Jessie!!! *teary eyes*
P.S. I snagged a SIGNED copy of this book from Novella, Maine's only mobile romance bookstore and you could, too!
I couldn’t put this book down once I started it, the pacing and plot kept me on my toes throughout the whole thing. I was in awe of the author’s ability to instantly transport me to a Summer in Maine from the beginning.
☀️ With plans to make it a summer to remember Everly has taken a summer job at a cabin resort in Silsby, Maine. But what she doesn’t anticipate is a broody, albeit handsome man that just so happens to work at the lodge as well. Hux is overwhelmed with responsibility, life-altering change, and there is a mysterious element to his character that I found very intriguing. From the moment these two meet Everly is drawn to him, but also finds that parts of him drive her absolutely crazy. I remember thinking, “I cannot believe he just did that 🤯” and then later thinking, “I am a complete sucker for this man 🫠”, recognizing parts of my younger self in Everly and understanding this undeniable attraction.
💗 Another beautiful part of this story is the friendship between Everly and her best-friend, Alex. Alex challenges Everly’s comfort zone, encourages her to have fun and take chances.
“She is without a doubt my soulmate, and whether I ever find my other half when it comes to romantic love, our friendship will continue to be my anchor.” -Only Some Stars Fall by Jessie Halley
The story explores being a young adult and learning how to navigate heartbreak, relationships, life experiences and how they shape the future. If you enjoy a hate-to-love, but passionate and unpredictable story that sparks emotions in the best way, then you will love this book!
You ever read a book and immediately start casting it in your head like it’s a Netflix original? That was me with Only Some Stars Fall. I could practically hear the moody indie soundtrack and see the slow pan over a misty Maine lake.
With her debut novel, Jessie Halley delivers high angst, deep feels, and the kind of slow-burn connection that makes you want to scream “just kiss already!” in the best way. Everly and Hux are both beautifully broken, and watching them piece themselves back together—while navigating the magic and mess of a Maine summer—was incredibly satisfying.
As a Mainer, I love seeing my state get the spotlight, especially in a story that captures both the quiet beauty and emotional weight of small-town life. Halley’s writing is heartfelt, cinematic, and totally bingeable (if only it was a series…).
Mark your calendars, romance fans—this is one summer read you won’t want to miss! 💜
Very happy release day to @authorjessiehalley 🥳 thank you for letting me read your book early! 5/5 ✨ -New Adult -Dual Pov -Dislike to Love -Small town -Angst ~ will they, won’t they vibes -Summer Love -Emotional backstory !tw¡suicide and parental death mentioned!tw¡ Y’all I had so much fun reading this story! I was hooked until the very end from the main characters storyline, the side characters storyline, the will they~won’t they vibes, and the plot twist 🤫- you’re just gonna have to read and find out! Hux and Everly definitely had a rocky start to their (complicated) relationship but when the line between hate and love blurs 🙂↔️ ohhhh that’s when you really can’t put the book down Watching the line blur while watching them learn to trust each other (emotional scars) was so sweet! They’re both just trying to find their place in the world and they just happen to fall in love while doing it 🥹 ALSO the best friend relationship between Alex and her Evie baby (I desperately need to see more best friends have sweet nicknames for each other) was so well written, are they willing to be a trio lol? No but seriously they were very supportive of each other and I would LOVE a story about Alex with her happy ending! Please check out this debut novel available now on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited! 🔗- https://a.co/d/1ZFpCPY
Wow...this book hit me in all of the right places. The characters, the plot line (and sub plot lines??) the drama...Jessie really knocked it out of the park. We follow her characters Everly and Hux as they navigate their own Summers, Everly wanting to spend her summer with her best friend in Silsby and Hux navigating life after dropping out of college to help his Family's business. Hux is the broody of all broody characters, grumpy except when it comes to Everly. Everly just wants to do right in her job but keeps stumbling (figuratively and literally) whenever Hux is around--which, I TOTALLY get, Ev. I was also blown away by the ending, the tension between the characters and how both came to a resolution which was GREAT but I have so! many! more! questions! about! Storm! (read: give me MORE!!!) I'm so impressed by this being a debut novel by Jessie because it reads as if she's been publishing novels her whole life. I cannot WAIT for the second book and to see how the ending of Book 1 ties into what you *think* will happen in Book 2 (iykyk--no spoilers here!!) If you're into a summer college romance, witty banter, a small town vibe, and want to utterly fall in love with your characters...then THIS IS YOUR BOOK!
I absolutely adore Instagram and giving me the ability to find new to me authors. This book was SO GOOD. After recently watching the summer, I turned pretty, I am loving the vibes lately of getting to have a summer away at a vacation type house. Our FMC goes to school in Boston but gets the opportunity, instead of going home for the summer, to vacation in Maine with her best friend, while her best friend works in rekindling a relationship with her dad. She quickly finds herself coming out of her comfort zone and adjusting to the town, the friends, and the overall vibes of Maine. In one of my favorite tropes, she meets the grumpy to her sunshine and though he has such an attitude, the force between the two of them is undeniable pulling them together. Both with their own grief and different way of handling things, and they find ways to overcome it together through their struggles. I love the college -esque drama between the characters and I was so invested from start to finish. And the true test of my favorite writing - I cried, soo it was an immediate 5 star. It pulled me in all the feels, rooting for our characters individually as well as together. I’m so glad I discovered this author and can’t wait to see what she coms up with next. (-Alex needs her story told 😘)
It's hard to believe that this is a debut novel from a brand new author. There were so many passages that just jumped out at me as being so perfectly written and descriptive and made me think, "damn this is not what I expected from an unknown/new author".
As someone from Maine I could already picture the setting of Anderson's before I even started, but Jessie's description brought of the place and characters really brought it to life for me. I started thinking that maybe this was a real place and almost Googled it!
This little love story is so lovely and brought me back to all those summer nights as a young adult, and falling in love again. Though this time I fell in love with Hux - so dreamy! It's the most perfect summer read so Jessie clearly knew what the people wanted at the start of summer. I absolutely devoured this book in a matter of like 2 days, and I have two toddlers so that's saying something!
Oh my gosh this book was incredible. This summer romance was everything a summer romance should be. I want to go do a summer vacation at this resort. I want to meet these people. I want to hang out at the bar with Elle. I want to go to the bonfires and the lake and the hikes. I want to see the stars. The way Jessie described this town was so vivid I genuinely felt like I could see it and like I was there in the moments with them.
Now. For Everly and Hux. She came in to his home town and flipped his whole world on its axis. He thought he had it all figured out… no love, friends with benefits, keep it easy. That was all fun and games until the sassy, clumsy, new employee walked in. Their banter was top notch. They healed parts of each other that desperately needed healing.
From the moment I started this book I couldn’t put it down. I actually binged it in one sitting. The setting is perfection. At times it gave me Dirty Dancing vibes with it being at a resort and the guy being kind of like Johnny. Everly goes to this resort with her best friend Alex. There she meets a very grumpy guy named Hux. I love me a grumpy hero and Hux definitely delivered there. I did think that he was very wishy washy and at times he annoyed me. He had been through a lot so it was understandable but as a reader it got a tad bit annoying. Don’t act like she means something one minute and then be a total asshat the next. I loved Everly’s friends and I loved Hux’s dog. If it wasn’t for all the back and forth and it feeling the same throughout the book I would have rated it higher. This is a great summer read!
This is Jessie Halley’s debut novel and I love getting to experience an authors first book baby!
This story is Hux and Everly’s story. This is your summer fling, enemies to lovers, he is the grump and she is just a girl trying to enjoy her summer break while making some extra money before school starts.
You get all the summer fun feels and honestly this book made me want to go hide away at a summer camp 🏕️ and spend my days out on the dock reading a book and watching the stars.
Everly comes with her bestie to a summer mountain/bay resort in Maine for the summer. They stay at her besties dad’s place, they work for the local resort and are just enjoying their summer vacation. In walk Hux, or better yet Everly legit walks into him and doesn’t make the greatest first impression for either one. These two can feel the tention with each other and they don’t really know what to do with it.
Hux has a past and keeps to himself. He isn’t happy with how his life has turned out and the darkness he carries, he has a lot of growing up and coming to his own realizations in this book (and thankfully he does!).
Everly has her own growing to do too. She is healing from heartbreak and learning to trust and have fun again. It can be hard figuring out your life and wanting to grow up so fast but for someone who has a lot to be mad about her sunny personality definitely isn’t diminished easily. Life can be hard but she is learning to work through it. Just when she finally lets her guard down the question will be does Hux protect her or break her?
I was so excited to read this debut romance from Jessie Halley, a local Maine author. I always love being able to read and support books in Maine by people from Maine. It doesn’t hurt that Maine is the perfect summer location to set a story!
Only Some Stars Fall follows Everly, a college student working at a resort in a small Maine town on her summer, looking for a fresh start, and Hux, the grumpy son of the lake resort owner who just keeps running into Everly at the worst moments.
With a lot of angst, realistic young adult chaos, and a lot of fun - Everly and Hux can’t seem to fight their connection, even if it brings up a lot of their individual pasts they might not be able to deal with.
**ARC REVIEW** Blown away by this read! I need this to be the beginning of a series because each character has so much protagonist energy. LOVE LOVE LOVE!! I’m not a proficient reader but this one had me hooked all the way through. I am however a Mainer since birth and author Jessie Halley can take you to a summer night under the stars in northern Maine right from these pages. She nailed the imagery and the magic of Maine summer. Brings me back to my own summers past when I was younger- then the air changing with fall at summer’s heels. AHH all the feels. Read it!
Only Some Stars Fall brought me right back to the dizzying hope and heartache of being a teenager waiting, wondering, and wishing to find your person. I couldn’t put it down and stayed up way too late just to finish it in one sitting!
This book has everything I love: sunshine-and-grump chemistry, slow-burn romance, and characters that feel real and raw. But what stuck with me most was the beautiful portrayal of female friendship; it was heartfelt and grounding in all the right ways. A stunning debut, and I can’t wait to read whatever comes next.
An amazing debut! Hux and Everly’s relationship kept me hooked and wanting more right from the beginning. I loved the summer in Maine as a location and in the north Maine woods. The sub plots within the main characters really added to the story and how it all came together in the end. I only wished that the ending hadn’t been so rushed as I feel like that was a huge piece throughout and explained a lot of Hux’s background.
Only Some Stars Fall by Jessie Halley is a sweet and heartfelt summer romance. The book follows the story of Hux and Everly, with an amazing group of friends and family. It perfectly captures the magic of young love, while also weaving in the struggles of healing and the hurdles that come with growing up. If you’re looking for a quick read that’s full of emotion, this debut book is a good one!
This book was such a great/easy read. Like I ate this up in two days (which is fast for me). As a Mainer, I love finding stories that take place in Maine but also by local Maine authors. Seriously loved it.
A great summer read for anytime of year. Complex, attention-grabbing characters that draw in the reader with swinging and heartfelt emotions. Jesse’s rich descriptions of the smells and beauty of Maine sure make me miss being in that fabulous state!
A perfect summer read full of emotion, sunshine, and self-discovery. Jessie makes me want to stay on the lake with the main characters long after the turn of the last page. Their story will stick with me and keep me coming back for re-reads for years to come.
Living in Maine this book was extra special. I had a love hate relationship with the couple here but it made me not want to put this book down and see where they end! I could see this book being a series!
