MURDER ON MT.OLYMPUS PT.2

"I let Dick choose his own outfit...who knew he'd go for full circus" ...Batman reflects

Well Batman doesn't really get any closer to any truth as he's recuperating but Diana does and solves the murder mystery.

love Guillem March's 9 panel per page art work

So much better when we are closer to Diana, not hearing the story from the perspective of a biased narrator. I continue to like Bruce in this. Maybe Tom King is just better at writing Batman than the various women characters I’ve read from him. Wonder why that could be. Because again, I’m reading a story about female rage written by someone who can’t possibly understand what that feels like. This is a theme I absolutely want to explore— but I’d love to explore it with some authenticity that can only come with a woman writer. I appreciate the effort this time, though. And the pretty, colorful art.
And surprisingly, I liked the depiction of Ares here, although he is not physically in this issue. I am playing a D&D campaign set in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson universe, and my character is a daughter of Ares. Exploring this character‘s more vulnerable, compassionate, and remorseful side is especially interesting to me right now. I appreciate this issue for unknowingly humoring me.

Regardless of the author’s intent, I liked the way they presented Batman and Wonder Woman’s relationship as one of mutual respect and comfort. They were not too proud to comfort or confide in each other, and there is something that I find particularly noble about that.

While this issue is step up from the previous issue, as it is more focused on Wonder Woman this time around, it still has a couple of baffling moments throughout. This issue finally gets to the point of why these past two issues required Batman in them, at least why Tom King wanted him here. Tom King took this opportunity to compare Batman to Steve Trevor, having Batman state that Steve Trevor inspired him to be a better man, and to me it just comes off as forced. This also shows why Wonder Woman has been pissed off for these past two issues, besides her being angry at the gods for their belligerence. She is actively mourning Steve Trevor's death still, which is understandable. There is a moment with Wonder Woman and Batman where she asks him how he deals with loved ones dying, with him saying "not to do it alone," which by itself is a good moment, if you've don't take into account all of Wonder Woman's history. Remember, DC has decreed that every comic published is canon to the main DC Comics timeline, and Wonder Woman has lost many of loved ones over the years. From Myndi Mayer, to Julia Kapatelis, to more recently with Donna Troy and Hippolyta. That's like a huge middle finger to all those characters, implying that those deaths didn't hit as hard as Steve's.

A great end to a great two parter. Loved the case, loved WW solved it, and loved Bruce's support. All great stuff, and a very touching last page.

I wasn’t super excited about this mini arc after the wrap-up of the Sovereign storyline but it ended up being pretty good. Guillem March’s art is really beautiful and a nice change of pace from Sampere. Plus, King uses this murder mystery story (probably something he had in his bag for a while) to further the larger story of his run, re: WW asserting herself in a patriarchal world and Steve Trevor.

Bruce: “The thing about colonel Trevor. What I most remember about him…when some of the other heroes…would tease him about being just a man dating the Wonder Woman—he always had this one answer. He’d say…the only difference between me and her is I love her more than the stars and she loves me more than the Earth. The world is full of Gods, Diana. From Clark to Zeus. In the middle of all that nonsense…I just try to be as good a man as I can. As he did.”

Although I do have some problems with how the Gods and characters are portrayed, especially with Hippolyta’s sentiments at the beginning (what was with that? Was it just because of the wrongful imprisonment or what), there is one very large reason I still enjoyed this mini 2 issue storyline…and that’s because it finally acted as an outlet for Diana’s frustrations. Ever since Steve died she has been the most out of character, going to horrific lengths to take on the Sovereign and finally defeat him. But at the end of the day she is still here and Steve Trevor is gone. So looking at this, I can only hope a secondary name for this arc is: Wonder Woman Electric Boogaloo 2 back n action! I jest, but seeing her take on the gods in her badass Wonder Woman way, but still reverting back to compassion and choice at every step…it’s very hopeful to see. There is a large difference between stabbing Hephaestus and forcing the soverign to mutilate himself.

With minimal time to spare and Bruce still out of commission from getting struck by lightning, it’s up to Diana to finish the investigation. The next step takes her to Hephaestus, the husband of Aphrodite who is the ocasional lover of Ares. Who else would have motive than a scorned lover? While he didn’t tell her much, his refusal to talk before she stabbed him with the blade he made and was used to kill Ares, and his subsequent anger, became very telling. But even with that, Diana still didn’t have much to go on and Zeus refused to extend her time…even if he is immortal. This led Diana to destroy a whole bunch of random pillars they had laying around, lol, and eventually another meeting with Aphrodite who joined her in the rubble. It is there the two share a drink and Aphrodite reveals something to Wonder Woman. Ares and her never had sex…all he did was come to her and cry in her arms. After all this time it seems that one character from the Wonder Woman mythos is getting real progress and not falling behind…Ares finally developed compassion from his encounters with Wonder Woman, and he swore the goddess of love to secrecy so he would have an outlet to express his pain.

But of course she didn’t keep it secret, and while Aphrodite loves wine…Dionysus loves to gossip. This brought Diana to the grape fields where she found a very drunk Dionysus stumbling around. She then pulled the old throw the early crown in the air trick, and forced Dionysus to talk or risk getting hit by it if she didn’t grab it in time. Playing into his own selfishness, Dionysus admitted everything to her. It turns out he told Hephaestus about it because he thought that would finally get him to drink.

So now that finally brings Wonder Woman back to Hephaestus with proof. It wasn’t just that Ares was engaging in the flesh of his wife, as that he could handle, but once he heard about Aphrodite comforting and holding him, something she never allows with Hephaestus, he could not abide it! Unfortunately Hephaestus is not much for words, and having been the one to build the lasso of truth, it seems he can also bend it to his will to tie Wonder Woman up. Once she was subdued, he admitted that he did not kill Ares…but he did tell Zeus about how much of a “sniveling sheep” he became. But seriously dude? This is Wonder Woman! One of the large themes with these gods that Wonder Woman is quick to point out, is how much their sexism causes them to underestimate her. She pulls the old, I came here with Batman and he’s right behind you trick! So while Hephaestus freaked out for a moment, it gave her the time needed to get free and knock him down.

So now with time up, this brings Wonder Woman and Batman to the feet of Zeus to finally reveal the real killer, as Hephaestus revealed…it was Zeus himself! He has hoped to frame the murder on the amazons and then reignite Ares anger towards them and destroy his compassion. Zeus of course tries to deny everything, but they have this friend see…by the name of Boston brand…and he can talk between lands of the living and dead so he could easily go down and tell Ares what happened if they don’t release Diana’s mother and restore her honor.

Diana: “You were not afraid of war with the amazons…but a war of the gods…son against father. As you know, those can be…disruptive.

Zeus: “I am your deity! I created you! Who the @#%# are you?!”

Diana: “Do you not know, you still little man? I am Wonder Woman.”

The final page of this issue gives me the most hope for the future, as Diana and Bruce returns home she admits that she is not stationed but that is the eternal nature of the gods. But she also admits something even deeper, she admits to the anger burning inside of her at Steve’s death, and asks how she could possibly go on. And Batman points out the only way it can be done…not alone at all. I mean…it kinda seems like she was doing that already with her entire support group, just in all the wrong ways and it would be way better if the other amazons continued to show up. But overall hopefully we are starting to see a bit more of her compassion coming back out after it was gutted out and thrown away in the last storyline. I also saw someone else make a great point…where’s Etta?! Not once has Diana talked to Etta about Steve’s death. That’s so wack. But to end on a positive note…I really liked the art and coloring, although was the 9 panel grid worth it?

This issue brought to you by the number 21 and the letter "T" for Toxic Masculinity! *.✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧.*

Diana does all the heavy lifting here (quite literally, actually), but Bruce is a definite compliment. The gods' arrogance and egos are on full display, but then we get a quiet moment between friends to see that humans - or at least some humans - are the gods' opposites and possess the qualities they lack (selflessness, compassion, common sense).

I wasn't that interested in the mystery in this arc, but man, I could just read about Bruce and Diana talking to each other for a whole book and that would be enough. I love them together so much.

4 stars. So good! This is what I’ve been wanting from this series. Diana in the lead and good character work. I love the bonding she and Bruce have been doing and I thought that ending panel with them in the Batmobile was beautiful.

I really enjoyed this team up story arc with Batman. Hoping they end up together until Steve comes back.

I liked this one. A touching issue with a smart plot and what feels like pretty good characterization. I think both the twist with Ares and Zeus was well done.
