Cross-examination isn’t a war of words. It’s not a legal battle. It’s not about who shouts the hardest or loudest. Cross-examination is daylight robbery; you go in hard and fast, grab what you need, and get the hell out.

Eddie Flynn, ex con-artist-turned-defense attorney, has an impossible choice to make. His client, the widow of a man who died in a confrontation with a police officer, is seeking justice for her husband. The victim himself was accused of killing a man in a robbery gone wrong outside the St. Regis Hotel—his widow swears it’s not true, and the story’s not adding up to Flynn, either. But with his small and scrappy law firm on the brink of financial collapse, taking this to trial and losing could put them under for good.

As Flynn digs deeper into the case, a complex web of deceit and corruption begins to emerge with farther-reaching implications than he ever imagined. After a whirlwind twenty-four hours chasing leads all throughout New York City, it all comes down to the cross-examination: will he risk his life to expose the truth?

“My mom used to say that the only difference between a con artist and a lawyer was that the lawyer wore a better suit. I’m a lawyer, so I have to disagree with that statement; a con artist would always wear the better suit.”

Originally published in 2015, The Cross by Steve Cavanagh introduces us to conman turned lawyer Eddie Flynn and his “partner in the law”, Jack Halloran and leads into the first full-length novel in the series, The Defense (though there is no direct overlap/ link between the books and Book 1 can be read independently). Halloran and Flynn’s latest client is the wife of ex-con Chilli Hernandez, who was choked to death by an NYPD police officer in a struggle for a knife that was used to murder a man. Already financially strapped, suing the NYPD puts them in a precarious position with the NYPD but it seems that there is more to Chilli’s death than meets the eye. As the lawyers delve deeper into the case they find themselves embroiled amid an IAB investigation against the “Morgue Squad” among whom are a group of corrupt NYPD officers who collude with a professional hit man and frame innocent men for contract killings, Chilli being the latest victim who was being framed for a hit. As the case progresses, threats are made, people are murdered and chaos erupts putting Eddie, Jack and his client in danger. It's up to Eddie to get justice for his client while keeping himself, his family, and his associates safe.

“Cross-examination isn’t a war of words. It’s not a legal battle. It’s not about who shouts the hardest or loudest. Cross-examination is daylight robbery; you go in hard and fast, grab what you need, and get the hell out.”

At 160+ pages, The Cross by Steve Cavanagh is a fast-paced, intricately plotted, thrilling novella that packs quite the punch. Though the plot does get a bit too complicated for such a short book and therefore feels a bit rushed, I liked how the story plays out. Overall, it’s a perfect introduction to Steve Cavanagh’s Eddie Flynn Series. During my recent trip to India, I got to browsing the Amazon Kindle store and was thrilled to come across this little gem of a novella. I wish it were available here in the US Kindle store because fans of the series would surely enjoy this one.

My reviews for the next four books in the series:

The Cross by Steve Cavanagh (Eddie Flynn #.05)
A Novella Audible read by Adam Sims followed by an author’s note read by Steve Cavanagh
About 4 hours to listen 🎧

From the Publisher blurb: “Cross-examination isn’t a war of words. It’s not a legal battle. It’s not about who shouts the hardest or loudest. Cross-examination is daylight robbery; you go in hard and fast, grab what you need, and get the hell out”

Available for the first time to U.S. fans, this novella was originally published in 2015 when the author (a lawyer) was inspired by a TRUE EVENT (DO listen to his author’s note at the end). At the time, he wished could have cross examined the witness in the actual case-so in this book-he let Eddie Flynn do it for him.

Eddie Flynn, is an ex con-artist-turned-defense attorney who we originally met in “The Defense” (Eddie Flynn #1). This novella takes us to the time just before that case, when Eddie and his original partner, are struggling to pay the bills, and stay in business.

His client, is the widow of a man who died in a confrontation with a police officer, who is seeking justice for her husband-a man she swears was innocent. The victim himself was accused of killing a man in a robbery gone wrong outside the St. Regis Hotel—but story isn’t adding up to Flynn.

Taking this case to trial will either make a name for Eddie-or force him to close his doors for good, and it will all come down to his cross-examination of the witness.

TW: Police Brutality

I have read ALL of the Eddie Flynn legal thrillers, and the BEST PART about revisiting the PAST with Eddie is having him in the Courtroom, trying this case.

In the more recent installments, his firm is now successful and he has a larger supporting cast of regular characters who share the limelight with him, and often he investigates while others take the lead in Court. I MISS Eddie’s clever cross examinations, so going back to a time when he was still married and living with his wife Christine and daughter Amy, and he had to be the one to both investigate AND TRY the case in Court was most welcome.

And, as the blurb promises-Eddie finds a way to go in fast and get what he needs-SO CLEVER!

This was definitely worth the listen and has me excited to start reading the latest installment which just arrived in my mailbox 📬!

If I ever need a lawyer, I’d want one like Eddie Flynn. He has a knack for uncovering the smoking gun, even if it means risking everything for his client. I really enjoyed this little prequel, it reminded me why this is one of my all time favourite series.

Like the others, it’s fast paced, action packed, and the legal jargon is written in a way that actually makes sense. If I could read one series again for the very first time, it would be this one.

Huge thanks to everyone involved for this republished ARC, such a welcome treat!

The Cross is a real treat for fans of the Eddie Flynn series by Steve Cavanagh! This brilliant novella packs a punch and shows con artist turned defense attorney, Eddie Flynn doing what he does best - argue his case in a court of law. He has gained insight and an ability to read people from his previous life and puts those skills to use in The Cross.

Eddie Flynn has agreed to take the case of a pregnant widow of a man who died during a run in with police. While looking into the case it becomes crystal clear to Eddie that things are not lining up. As he gets to work, Eddie will get into some danger while uncovering lies, deceit, corruption, and lies. But the true beauty in this book is in the court room scenes where Eddie argues his case.

Gripping, shocking, well thought out, thrilling and entertaining. I listened to the audiobook and loved the narration. Such a great addition to the fantastic Eddie Flynn series!!!

Eddie Flynn was a hustler before becoming a criminal lawyer (perhaps not much difference between the two as integrity is not always at the top of the list of specialities). However, Eddie had good moral principles and was quite determined to succeed in achieving the best settlement possible for his clients. He eventually meets up unexpectedly with Albert Frost from the A.F. Group 54, a special investigation Unit with Internal Affairs who has offered him damning evidence on his current case, if he can help nail the ‘Morque Squad’. The members of this exclusive club is made up of crooked detectives, corrupt police officers, dishonest lawyers, and even the upper levels of the NYPD who are happy to turn a blind eye on occasion. It was a fast read with some entertaining moments.

A novella featuring Eddie Flynn, everyone’s favorite con-artist turned defense attorney.
This read takes us back in time to the beginning and learn how things started with Eddie and Jack.

If you’ve ever been curious about the backstory of your characters to see how they developed into the protagonists you’ve grown to love, then don’t miss this latest!

Eddie takes on the case of a man killed at the hands of the police. Though this man was certainly no angel, his pregnant widow swears it was not a justified killing, and that it was pure murder.

Yes, that means Eddie is about to take on the entire Police force. Not exactly an entity you want to be on the wrong side of…but you know Eddie!

The audio was narrated solely by Adam Sims who delivered a great performance.

💭Equal amounts of strategizing and courtroom action. So whatever your legal pleasures…they’ll be met in this shortie!

Already a huge fan of Steve Cavanagh’s novels, I was beyond excited to learn more about con artist-turned-defense attorney, Eddie Flynn, in The Cross. A prequel to the eponymously named series, this novella was one heck of a brilliant legal thriller. With short, action-packed chapters, tension-filled narration, and a fast, addictive pace, it took everything I had not to fly through this one at a faster speed than even I could handle. After all, in typical Cavanagh style, the courtroom dramatics were a touch above with the sprung traps and gotcha questions. The absolute best piece of all, though? That had to be the “OH S***!” twists. Leaving me with my jaw on the floor and my eyes popping out of my head, I was beyond blown away more than once. Bravo, Mr. Cavanagh, you somehow managed to knock it way out of the park yet again.

All said and done, from the riveting prologue to the cliffhanger conclusion, even if you haven’t already fallen in love with Eddie and his motley crew in the pre-existing series, you will at soon as you listen to this one. If you do, I guarantee that you’ll be buying the first book in the series, The Defense as soon as you finish. Giving me even more character development for the star of the show, I got to know Eddie in a way I never had before. Scrappy, clever, and clearly street smart, his charm simply flowed off the pages and into my ears while I paired an ebook with the audio. Superbly narrated by Adam Sims, I felt like a fly on the wall while he brought everything to life. So if you are an old fan or a soon-to-be reader, be sure to grab this one now. A wild rollercoaster ride of unbridled suspense, I couldn’t put it down until I finished. Rating of 5 stars.

the setup…
Eddie Flynn is a defense attorney with a struggling law practice he and his partner Jack Halloran are trying to keep afloat. Eddie’s marriage his also shaky because of the long hours that keep him away from wife Christine and daughter Amy. He takes on a politically unpopular case where he’s representing the wife of a man who was killed by an NYPD detective using an illegal chokehold. It soon becomes clear that it’s also a matter of life or death for him and his client.

the heart of the story…
Did I mention that Eddie is also a former con artist? He doesn’t think like your traditional lawyer and is formidable in the courtroom. Eddie is also street smart, which helps him stay alive and a few steps ahead of those who want the case and him dead, outwitting a host of opponents.

the narration…
It’s my first go round with Adam Sims and I’m thrilled he’s the voice of the series. He’s Eddie, through and through and the storytelling is breakneck speed, just like the character.

the bottom line…
I’ve wanted to start this series forever and now I know what all the fuss is about. This felt like a full length novel and it moves! I’m grateful I listened to the author’s notes as he provides the inspiration for the story, which also reminded me of one of the most disgraceful periods in NYPD history.

This is the prequel to the series and has to be read. It really lays down the foundation for what follows. Where they started, sort of character development in reverse. Which is a bit weird, but it works.

As I enjoy Steve Cavanagh’s Eddie Flynn series, I thought that I would end the year with a novella that started it all, perfect for a single-day read. The book is a prequel to the series novels and sees Flynn ready to show his legal skills in quite the trying case. In civil court, Flynn has brought suit against Detective Fred Marzone and the NYPD for the death of admitted criminal, Chilli Hernandez, by strangulation. Marzone has hired a slick lawyer and someone has been targeting Flynn from within the NYPD. When Flynn is covertly approached by Internal Affairs, they promise to have something to bolster the case against Marzone, but everything must be done on the sly. It would seem that Marzone is part of the Morgue Squad, a group within the NYPD happy to act outside of the law and enforce contracts on active hits. As Flynn juggles this and tries to bring Hernandez’s widow some peace of mind, he knows that he might be placing a target on his back, one from which he will not recover. Wanting to do the right thing, Flynn must decide how he will handle this, knowing that one false move could bring horrible consequences in the form of a chalk cross and a visit by a man with a Zippo. A great novella that will surely pique the interest of any reader contemplating this series, as well as complementing the novels Steve Cavanagh has written in this evolving series to date. Recommended to those who like gritty legal thrillers, as well as the reader who needs a short piece to fill a little reading time.

I began the Eddie Flynn series a week ago and have already devoured two novels and this novella. There is never a lack of action or development with Flynn or those around him. Eddie Flynn, a former con man turned lawyer, has a gritty personality and wanted to do best for his clients. He has one major weakness, his family, who always seem to be targeted by those he wishes to see brought to justice. In this prequel, Flynn still has his wife and daughter as a part of his life, though his constant focus on work leaves him disappointing them both with regularity. He has some tricks up his sleeve, but must come to terms with the fact that NYC is a city filled with those who wish him harm, both inside the courtroom and on the streets. The reader gets a brief glimpse of Jack Halloran, Flynn’s legal partner and moral compass. This works well for those who have a few of the novels under their belt, provided backstory context to Flynn’s legal antics. With a handful of others making appearances as well, the reader can see many of the issues that Flynn faces while trying to distance himself from con work and the reputation that follows him. The novella was quite exciting and told in Cavanagh’s usually ‘flashback from the opening chapter’ format, perfect for those who love seeing a narrative grow. While I still have a few novels to read before I am caught up (and a new piece ready to launch in 2020), I am pleased I took this detour to learn more about the early Flynn.

Kudos, Mr. Cavanagh, for developing such a great series. I am hooked and hope others discover the spark I have with these pieces.

This was my first experience with Eddie Flynn and I gotta say, I LIKE the guy! I can understand why my bestie @nikkileethrillseeker calls him her husband! Eddie is street smart and sarcastic, but also highly intelligent with a strong sense of justice, ESPECIALLY for those who are taken advantage of.

Eddie is taking on the NYPD including the Internal Affairs Bureau as he deals with the divisive situation of an illegal chokehold being applied. Did the officer use an illegal chokehold or not? The police department adds to the complexity of the case as they seek to deny any liability regarding their officer's behavior. Yikes, this one is STICKY and extremely relevant.

Adam Sims is a phenomenal narrator, not only with the perfect tone and inflections for Eddie, but he also performed a vast array of characters including wise guys, the judge, Eddie's client (Maria) and a hitman ALL with distinct and UNIQUE voices. Speaking of the hitman, he was CREE-PY with a capital C. I don't think he would have made such an impact if I had eyeball read this, because it wasn't only WHAT he said, it was HOW he said it! (*shivers) Cavanagh's Author Note at the end was heartfelt and enlightening and only made me love the story (and Eddie) even more.

THE CROSS is super fast paced, with bursts of action and an incredible trial. I LOVE nothing more than excellent courtroom scenes and Steve Cavanagh DELIVERS! My favorite is always a brilliant cross examination of a witness and I couldn't have been happier with the dialogue and legal battle of wits. Honestly I'm late to the Eddie Flynn party, but I'm dying to read more. If you're a fan of suspenseful legal thrillers with topics that are timely and a MC you'll love, don't wait like I did, dive in NOW!

Started reading Steve Cavanagh books after really enjoying the novel 'Thirteen' from the Eddie Flynn series and have been trying to catch up ever since. I love the main character Eddie Flynn, but I couldn't get into this novella. Maybe it caught me on a bad day because there are plenty of other reviewers who have a much different opinion of the book, but I never felt gripped and felt a little disappointed.
I have since purchased other books in the series and will certainly be giving this series another well deserved chance.

Guess what guys? We get more of Eddie Flynn! And this is a prequel to the entire series!!! This was originally published in 2015 and I have no idea why I couldn’t find it in the UK before 🥹.

I listened to the audiobook which was just a little over 4 hours. This was also the first time I’ve listened to an Eddie Flynn novel.

As a prequel, Eddie is still married to his wife, Christine and his daughter was a young child. He was already having marital issues due to the severity of his job.

The case? One that looks pretty shady to Eddie. He wants justice for his client. What makes Eddie such a shark in the courtroom is his ability to run it! No one is a beast like this guy, PERIOD!

Please listen at the end where Steve mentions the true story behind the novel. I will quickly mention that if you like listening to audiobooks while multi-tasking, you might have a harder time following along. You will need to listen for details that are not to be missed.

Representing a widow whose husband, Chili Hernandez, was killed at the hands of the police, con artist turned lawyer Eddie Flynn sets out to clear his name and uncover a web of corruption.

While the case itself didn’t keep my attention the way Cavanagh’s full-length novels do, I still appreciated this introduction to the Eddie Flynn series. Having read the series completely out of order, I can appreciate how much this shortened novel lays the groundwork for Eddie’s personal and professional lives.

🎧 Of course, I always love Adam Sims’ narration as Eddie Flynn. It’s pitch perfect as always and my favorite part of reading via audio versus my eyes.

This was a novella, to give as a glimpse of the series’ concept. .

Eddie Flynn, the origin story (kind of).

4.5 stars rounded up.

Predating the entire Eddie Flynn series published thus far, "The Cross" is an absolute treat for fans of Steve Cavanagh’s street-smart conman-turned-lawyer Eddie Flynn. In this story, initially published in 2015, Eddie takes on the seemingly impossible case of a widow whose husband died in a confrontation with a police officer. The deceased man was accused of murder himself, but the pieces don’t add up - and Eddie can smell a setup. With his tiny two-man law firm on the brink of collapse, one trial could make or break everything. What follows is a whirlwind twenty-four hours in New York, culminating in the kind of razor-sharp cross-examination that has become Eddie’s trademark.

As someone who recently binged nearly the entire Eddie Flynn backlist, it was fascinating to go back to where it all began. Eddie here is still every bit as compelling, though a little rougher around the edges - scrappy, hustling, and without his later crew of brilliant misfits to support him, meaning he has the courtroom all to himself, giving him more of a chance to shine. His only backup is his “partner in the law” Jack Halloran, whom fans will recognize from the next book in the series, "The Defense".

The author’s note at the end (read by Steve Cavanagh himself, natch) infuses the book with an unsettling authenticity and an urgency that hasn't changed even ten years after the novella's initial publication, especially once you learn the novella was inspired by a real case Cavanagh - himself a lawyer who, at that time, was practicing in Ireland - wished he could have cross-examined. In many ways, Eddie is the embodiment of that “what if” fantasy.

The audiobook is superbly produced, with Adam Sims once again narrating as the voice of Eddie Flynn. Sims captures Eddie’s streetwise charm and intelligence perfectly, striking the right balance between wit and gravitas. His narration elevates the tension in the courtroom scenes and keeps the pace electric throughout - proof that this pairing of author and narrator is as good as it gets in legal thrillers.

My only complaint? As a novella, it’s over far too soon. I could have spent hours more with Eddie navigating the courtroom and weaponizing his conman’s insight into human psychology. But for its brevity, not a single word is wasted - "The Cross" is a compelling courtroom drama / legal thriller, and once again quintessentially Eddie Flynn.

Highly recommended for series veterans and newcomers alike, and a perfect bridge into the next book in the series. And if you can, do yourself a favor and listen to the audiobook - Adam Sims makes Eddie Flynn come alive.

Many thanks to Simon & Schuster Audio | Simon & Schuster Audio Originals and NetGalley for the ARC of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

This edition of "The Cross" is slated to be released on November 18, 2025.

This is a fast-paced novella of 166 pages. It also contains an excerpt from the Defence. Eddie Flynn is an ex con-man turned lawyer. He sometimes uses trickster and sleight of hand skills he learned in his past life in attempting to obtain justice for his clients.

Here Eddie is presented with an intriguing court case. He wants to bring down a corrupt NYPD cop who is associated with other policemen, lawyers, etc. They break legal laws and rules of the police department, going as far as murder which is overlooked by authorities. They also employ a deadly hitman.

Eddie wants to get a settlement for the wife of a man who was killed by the corrupt policeman. The man who was killed was a petty criminal, but Eddie feels that the corrupt policeman with his partner deliberately killed this man who was unable to defend himself. He also suspects the NYPD officer on trial heads the gang of unethical, crooked cops.

After receiving damning evidence of the killing proving that the police officers version of events is a lie, Eddie had a dilemma. If he uses the evidence, both he and the widow of the murdered man would probably be targeted for death. What can he do?

Steve Cavanagh writes a gripping, suspenseful courtroom drama containing more intrigue, twists and thrills found in many full-length books of this genre. It has all the action, ethical quandaries and strong character development that makes one feel they have read a complete well-paced plot rather than a novella. There is also a funny story involving a racehorse scam while Eddie was a con-man. 3.5 stars

The Defence is one of the best legal thrillers I have ever read, and I keep meaning to get round to continuing with the series but am now saving them for my holiday in May. Eddie Flynn is one hell of a character and so I couldn’t wait to read this novella, The Cross, for a bit of Flynn action whilst waiting to continue the series.

The Cross is one of the best novellas that I have ever read, the action did not let up for a second and the storyline was as strong and immersive as a full-length story would be. Steve Cavanagh is an incredible writer and he really knows how to keep a reader gripped. Eddie Flynn is up in court with damning evidence against an NYPD detective. Evidence that could get him killed. Will he use it, or will he keep quiet? Readers who have met Eddie Flynn before will know the answer to that question.

For those who haven’t yet met Eddie Flynn this is the perfect place to start. He is such an intriguing character, and one who is so well-drawn. He’s likeable and The Cross shows just what sort of man he is, and the lengths he will go to in order to protect his own integrity but also to get results for his clients. I love Steve Cavanagh’s court scenes and have had a fascination with courts and lawyers even before doing jury service a few years ago. Despite this being a novella and a story written for entertainment, there is some authenticity here in the courtroom and it makes for an atmospheric read throughout. The tension and fear within the room being palpable, and I loved being a witness to it all. The storyline is powerful, emotional, hard-hitting and thought-provoking. And all from a novella. Brilliant.

The story unfolds almost in real time as Eddie realises just what he’s got himself caught up in. I started this novella at around 1.30am and would have had it read in one sitting if I didn’t need to sleep. I woke up in the morning and continued reading straightaway and finished the story wanting more from Eddie Flynn and Steve Cavanagh which means I can’t wait to continue with this series in a few weeks time. Steve Cavanagh’s success is great to witness and his storytelling ability is phenomenal. His books can easily rival John Grisham (who like most popular authors now phones it in) and so if you are a fan of legal thrillers and you aren’t reading this series yet, you need to be.

A short Eddie Flynn novella. Love Steve Cavanaghs books and this one was a case of corrupt police in NYC.
Eddie was trying to get justice for a pregnant woman whose husband was killed. The police say it wasn't a homicide but Eddie Flynn starts to find out it might be. Some of the police force might be behind it.

The Cross – A Stunner

The Cross is the prequel to Steve Cavanagh’s debut thriller The Defence, and gives more of the background to the lawyer Eddie Flynn. This wonderful little novella is pacey well written and another fix for those who loved The Defence and for those who have not, this is a great introduction.

Eddie and his partner are not getting any new clients, bar the one that they have in a Civil Suit against the NYPD and the City of New York. There is very little evidence in support in his case, and he seems to be thwarted at every attempt to find any. When he finds a note on his car, and calls the number, it sets off events that will bring him in to contact with the Internal Affairs Bureau of the NYPD.

As the trail livens up Flynn is presented with a way out, which way he will turn, is anyone’s guess, especially when he sees the Head and Deputy of IAB get shot. Flynn wants to do his best for his client and remain alive, as the case continues there does not seem like much hope of either.

Somehow Eddie Flynn will have to work his magic whilst under great pressure from bent Police Officers and possibly others. One thing is clear, Eddie is a survivor!

A fantastic short introduction in to the life of Eddie Flynn and his unorthodox approach to the law. If you are not a fan, you soon will be, Eddie Flynn is addictive.

Thank you for Libro.fm and Steve Cavanagh for my copy of this book. It was about Eddie Flynn, an ex-con defense attorney whose client is a widow of a man killed by a police officer. Nothing is adding up, and going against the NYPD is no small feat. As he digs deeper into the case, Eddie realizes that the corruption is much more sinister than he thought.

Thoughts: I am such a huge fan of the Eddie Flynn series! I haven't read a single book of Steve Cavanagh that I didn't like, and this one is no exception. I normally don't like novellas, but this one was fleshed out and felt like a full story. It was fast paced and I couldn't put it down. It's a great prequel to the series and adds even more context to the characters I love. 5-stars.

It looks more like a full novel. It has all the ingredients. A plot wholly developed, a fast-paced thriller, and a lively main character. Eddie Flynn is addictive as a lawyer, we want to know more about him. So, being this a prequel to “The Defense”, his debut novel, I now know enough to get my hands on it. I hope it will keep me as interested as with this splendid introduction. “The cross” also includes great courtroom dialogues and explanations.

Eddie Flynn is a former con man turned lawyer and he’s the first to admit the line between the two professions is thin. The tricks and instincts that once kept him alive on the streets now serve him well in the courtroom, especially when he takes on a case as dangerous as this one. His client, a grieving widow, is suing New York City for the wrongful death of her husband, a murder carried out by a corrupt cop with powerful connections. From the beginning, Eddie faces resistance from the NYPD and intimidation from dangerous figures determined to bury the truth. When Internal Affairs approaches him, the stakes escalate, and what follows is a thrill ride filled with twists, threats, keeping me on the edge of my seat!

This was my first Steve Cavanagh read, and I’m glad I started with this prequel novella to the Eddie Flynn series. The story hooked me immediately and I listened straight through in one sitting! I was worried for Eddie, his client, and his family as he pursued what seemed like an unwinnable case at high personal risk. Yet Eddie proves himself a formidable and cunning opponent and watching him outmaneuver his enemies was both thrilling and deeply satisfying. I’m eager to dive into the rest of the series!

The audiobook narration by Adam Sims was a perfect match for Eddie’s character. His subtle New York accent captured Eddie’s grit and charm. I also appreciated the author’s note, read by Steve Cavanagh himself, I also appreciated the author’s note, read by Steve Cavanagh himself, which provided fascinating insight into the real-life inspiration behind the story.

I voluntarily listened to a copy courtesy of the publisher. These are my thoughts and opinions.

This is the novella that kick starts the Eddie Flynn series by Steve Cavanagh. Written in similar style to both James Patterson's detective stories and John Grisham's trial cases, this story keeps your attention. There are nine books in the series and one other very short novella, later in the lineup.

This first novella introduces us to the former bad boy, former cop, and current partner of a failing attorneys office, Eddie Flynn. Winning a big case of NYC police corruption, it pulls the office out of the red and back into financial security - for the minute - until his partner, Jack Halloran, gambles their profits away.

You get a good taste of who the protagonists are and the way Cavanagh writes in this novella. Good enough to take me along on his journey, as I hope to progress through the series.
