The Broken Hotel for Magical Misfits #0

A Hidden Witch's Inheritance : An Urban Fantasy Prequel Full of Magic, Mystery, and Found Family

Rate this book
I’ve been alone for so long. Now even my dreams are turning against me...

Foster care hasn’t exactly been a fairy tale since Mum died. Books have been my only real friends as I’ve bounced from one temporary home to the next—never wanted, never truly welcome.

But on my seventeenth birthday, a solicitor shows up with a gift Mum left behind—an old amulet with a strange pull and a price tag big enough to change my life. I never knew she had it. I don’t know why it feels like it’s calling to me.

And I’m not sure if I should keep it or let it go…

Now my dreams have turned strange—and maybe meaningful. There’s a message waiting for me, if I can survive long enough to understand it.

A Hidden Witch’s Inheritance is the prequel to the Broken Hotel for Magical Misfits series—introducing Bryar Hawthorne and a magical world full of heart, humour, found family, and gloriously quirky chaos.

It’s been a strange, unbelievable journey to arrive at the point where these books are going to be released into the wild, like rare, near-extinct animals being returned to their natural habitat, already wondering where they’re going to nick cigarettes from on the plains of Africa, the way they used to from the zookeeper’s overalls. C.N. Rowan (“Call me C.N., Mr. Rowan was my father”) came originally from Leicester, England. Somehow escaping its terrible, terrible clutches (only joking, he’s a proud Midlander really), he has wound up living in the South-West of France for his sins. Only, not for his sins. Otherwise, he’d have ended up living somewhere really dreadful. Like Leicester. (Again – joking, he really does love Leicester. He knows Leicester can take a joke. Unlike some of those other cities. Looking at you, Slough.)

With multiple weird strings to his bow, all of which are made of tooth-floss and liable to snap if you tried to use them to do anything as adventurous as shooting an arrow, he’s done all sorts of odd things, from running a hiphop record label (including featuring himself as rapper) to hustling disability living aids on the mean streets of Syston. He’s particularly proud of the work he’s done managing and recording several French hiphop acts, and is currently awaiting confirmation of wild rumours he might get a Gold Disc for a song he recorded and mixed.

What can I say? I just adored this prequel story, 𝐴 𝐻𝑖𝑑𝑑𝑒𝑛 𝑊𝑖𝑡𝑐ℎ'𝑠 𝐼𝑛ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒, which introduced us to Bryar Hawthorne. Bryar has been through the foster system and has come out with a love of books and a need to belong.

This book pulled me in emotionally from the very start, and I absolutely wanted to give Bryar a hug and a cup of tea, yet this story was somehow still a light uplifting read as Bryar discovers a magical inheritance that could change everything for her. I was there, cheering for her every step of the way.

I have also been utterly privileged to advance read book one of this series, 𝐴 𝐻𝑖𝑑𝑑𝑒𝑛 𝑊𝑖𝑡𝑐ℎ'𝑠 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑙𝑙 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑀𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑇𝑖𝑛𝑦 𝐺𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑀𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑦, and I can say that without a shadow of a doubt it is one of my favourite reads of 2025. It is so fresh, so 𝑓𝑢𝑛, and it is going to be a huge success.

If you like Ilona Andrew's 𝐼𝑛𝑛𝑘𝑒𝑒𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝐶ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑙𝑒𝑠, you're going to adore this series.

What a delightful short prequel laying the path for an interesting series. Poor Bryar Hawthorne went from foster home to foster home, but her current one, while emotionless as she's only a paycheck to them, allowed her to read. She preferred books to people which I can relate to. Then after her 17th birthday came the lawyer's letter. Anger and confusion warred, but this was a life changing inheritance. My 1st read by this author and I am definitely keeping an eye out for this series.

When I learnt that one of my favourite authors would be releasing a new series, I was ecstatic! And then I got to read the prequel...and good golly was I enthralled, entertained, immersed and, quite frankly, my poor heart stuttered on a few occasions. Why? Well that's simply to answer, Chris doesn't TELL a story, he gets his audience consumed by the narrative and prose, which is some of the best I've read. See, Chris is a very articulate author, his works have prose that's so descriptive, so vivid, I LIVE the story, I don't just read it.

And guess what? My heartstrings are already being tugged within the first pages... bleak, that's the best I can describe this young girl, or rather, her life is bleak, her life is controlled by the government and her 2 latest foster parents, neither of whom give a fig about her, both of whom demand she follows "their" rules, so she tries, she really tries to keep her head down and mouth clean. In and out of foster homes since a devastating event 4 years ago, Bryar has nightmares, she wakes up screaming, in emotional pain, of loss, of being tossed about like a soccer ball. You hearing the violin's yet? Because these strings are plucking at me, hard! These feels are synonymous with this author, but the ingenuity of this author ALWAYS takes it to a place I could never envisage, he takes a concept and dusts his magic over it, honestly leaving me gobsmacked!

Until a letter appears, turning Bryar's life 360, and suddenly Bryar is thrust, literally, into the unknown, into a world that's dreamlike yet real. Given a task that even I, as prolific a reader as I am, would find daunting, impossible to achieve. So painfully wraught an image, until Chris does the Chris twist.... and it surpasses the gobsmack into awe. One thing resonates with truth, even if it is fiction, books ARE meant to be read, books DO give meaning to life, they don't only entertain, they inform, they offer escapism, they offer joy, they offer hope. The hope that's wound through this novella promises to flare to life in the series. Bryar's character promises to grow and grow and grow... into what, well that's a bit illusive right now but the author has whet my appetite to discover her journey, her purpose and the purpose of a particular amulet. A quick, highly entertaining, highly immersive read! Different? Yeah... Unique? Absolutely!

**ARC Reader, all opinions are my own**

Bryar Hawthorne has been stuck in the British foster system for the past several years, ever since her mom went out to run an errand and was hit by a car. She’s bounced from foster home to foster home and school to school as her broken heart led to reactions, altercations, and all-around misery. While this is to be expected, none of her foster families have been tolerant of it, so out she went.

She’s almost 18 now though, just a few short months. And while the foster parents she has now aren’t terribly emotionally available nor tolerant of any sort of interruption of their carefully curated lives (you know, like crying out from a nightmare, taking up too much space in the kitchen, big things like that), at least they let her read the books. It’s her only escape and definitely one of her few loves in life.

When a letter arrives letting her know that a lawyer’s office wants her to come in to receive her mother’s will and effects, she’s floored. Not just because she and her mom had lived hand-to-mouth for as long as she could remember, moving from place to place, but also because it’d been years since her mother had passed.
A distractingly beautiful amulet and some WEIRD dreams later, and Bryar’s got a plan: time to move out and open up that bookstore of her dreams. Man, what WAS that dream about…?

“A Hidden Witch’s Inheritance” is the prequel novella for the upcoming brand new series by celebrated urban fantasy author C. N. Rowan, “A Broken Hotel for Magical Misfits.” This is the first new series solo-written by Rowan since the end of the nine-book epic imPerfect Cathar series, and fans are going to be glad they’ve waited. The writing is entrancing, the characters are instantly endearing (you just want to wrap Bryar up and protect her from all the world’s problems!), and the suspense… breathtaking. This series promises to be a wild ride of magical proportions, and I can’t wait for the first book to kick things off!

CW: familial loss

Thank you to the author for the ARC! “A Hidden Witch’s Inheritance” releases May 21, 2025!

Tragedy hit Bryan Hawthorne’s life 4 years ago, leaving her completely alone. Now, at 17, she’s more adrift than ever, her impending age-out from the foster system that’s housed her ever looming in her immediate future. Until, one day, she receives a letter. A letter telling her of a will, an inheritance, and, just maybe, a way forward.

And he’s back with another delightful prequel that’s sure to hook you for the rest of the series! I’ve been dying to get another C. N. Rowan book in my hands ever since his ‘imPerfect Cathar’ series ended, and it’s finally time!

I already know the rest of this series is going to be insanely good, but let’s just start with this one. It’s got just a little bit of snark (and the impending promise of a whole lot more as soon as our MC is somewhere it won’t cost her housing). It’s got a whole lot of heart. It’s got just the right amount of magical amulets that cause us readers to ask important questions, such as, ‘where can I get one?’ And, ‘do they come in other colors?’

Jokes aside, I really am so excited to jump into the “Broken Hotel for Magical Misfits” series, and this prequel is already setting the expectations bar. It’s a short read (as such things tend to be), so I can only go into so much detail, but everything about it has already established that it’s going to be both delightful and different enough from the “Cathar” series to stand on its own two feet without losing the wit and charm I’ve come to expect in this author’s work. If you’re looking for some urban magic and the impending threat of a good time, now’s your chance to get ahead of the curve for the series.

Bryar Hawthorne lives a sad, lonely existence. Ever since the demise of her mother, a few years ago, she has bounced from foster home to foster, never finds love, care or attention in any of them. Her latest foster parents are not particularly friendly, nor unfriendly, not particularly caring, nor uncaring. She is but a monthly pay check to them, but at least she is allowed to read their books this time round. However, she knows that in just a few short months, once she turns eighteen, she will be on her own once more.

When a mysterious letter arrives from a lawyer, wanting to share her late mother's last will and testament, Bryar is intrigued. Her mother didn't have anything to leave her - they had always lived hand to mouth, moving around constantly while her mother tried to find work. What could she have possibly left to Bryar?

I was fully intrigued by Bryar in this one and this novella has completely whet my appetite for what might come in the rest of the series. I really felt for Bryar - she was all but invisible to her foster family and the decision she had to make was a tough one, especially for someone who had no love in her life at all. But the ending was the best part - I need to know who the man in the hoodie was and why he lied to whoever he was talking to on the phone! Hopefully we will know more very soon!

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author, but this review is my own honest one! I cannot wait to read the rest of this series and hopefully Chris won't make us wait too long!

*Snagged by a Bryar*

A Hidden Witch's Inheritance leaves a legacy of imagination behind for readers - young and old - to collect and place with their most valued treasures.

* * * * * * * * * *

Her brambled misfortunes will prick at your heart and make you wonder if there's any sweetness to be found among Bryar's life of needling worries.

Never fear.

Okay, fear for her a little. She does get attacked by books.

And how could they, when books have been the only beloved family she's found after the death of her mum. They've been the only softness and solice in her prickly foster home situation.

The books were a dream come true - until she had to save the world from within a too real fever dream, where the essence of her mum swirled around her and the voice of reason gave her hard choices.

Bryar's beginnings will snag your attention and leave behind burs of curiosity. Enjoy getting hooked!.

Well, this is a fantastic hook of a prequel! The FMC, Bryar, is such a sympathetic character....trying to be tough after a heartbreaking event, living a life without love and only cheered by the stories found in borrowed books. The author has packed likeability into her in spades and written her so well that I feel like she is a young friend who I need to take out for tea, cake and hugs! There is emotion aplenty in this short story but C.N. Rowan is an author who can deliver astoundingly visual stories that take readers on roller-coasters so I trusted his process and just enjoyed where this amazing story took me.

I admire Bryar's grit and can see her pushing hard for a life of fulfilment achieved through hard work, with some intriguing side trips, all flavoured with snappy attitude - exactly the sort of journey I want to follow.

Bryar Hawthorn has been treading carefully around her latest foster parents, Stacy and Jim ever since she was placed with them. Whilst they certainly couldn't be called warm and caring their house is full of books and they allow her to take any of her choice to her room to read. Access to so many books is huge and Bryar absolutely does not want to lose this. This quiet understanding is thrown into disarray when she receives a solicitor's letter inviting her to visit concerning her mother's will.

A wonderful start to a new series. As always with this author the characters are entertaining, pithy and quirky. The world building is excellent and quickly done. Can't wait to see what the next book brings.

Wow! Mr Rowan can really pack a punch, with very few words. Although this story was quite short, I was very quickly drawn in. With just a bare bones outline, we clearly understand that Bryar has endured a heartbreaking few years, preceded by a difficult but loving childhood. Then a mysterious letter arrives, leading to a strange bequest. Though we barely scrape the surface of what this might ultimately mean for her, I had tears in my eyes (and a broken heart) as Bryar faced a difficult choice. I cannot wait to read more of her story.

I really enjoyed this prequel to this series. I thought this novella really set the stage, as we are introduced to Bryar, who together with her mother, struggled with getting by, becomes an orphan after the sudden loss of her mother. However, at seventeen-years-old, Bryar unexpectedly receives a peculiar inheritance from her mother. One that may lead to an adventure brought on by a little magic and books.

Being someone who loves books just as much, this has me eagerly waiting to see what vast book-loving escapades awaits Bryar.

It’s been a while since this author has published a new book, so I was excited about this novella introducing a new series. We are introduced to Bryar and her very sad existence at 17 years old. I hate how she was treated in this book with her foster family, but with how the entire story went, I’m excited to learn what she does with the knowledge she learned in this. This is a well-written introduction to this new series, and I can’t wait to dive into the next book when it’s finally read. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

This quick read is the prequel to a new upcoming urban fantasy and it certainly did it's job. We are introduced to 17 year old Bryar Hawthorne, who found herself orphaned 4 years ago and has bounced around foster homes ever since.
This book opens up the world that Bryar finds herself in but really only gives you a peek.
As always this author has produced a work of literature that is cleverly crafted and leads us into the calamity and humour that brings this story to life. An enjoyable read that I cannot wait to continue with the rest of the series.

What a wonderful story! I have read and enjoyed CN Rowan's work in the past, and he is clearly an even more gifted writer than I realized because this work is so different from his others. In this prequel novella, the protagonist, Bryar, has an absolutely life changing moment in the form of a will she has only just been presented. The results are completely unexpected, just like the will, and take both the reader and Bryar on quite the adventure. It is a complete story in itself, but it still made me want to run to the rest of the series and devour it immediately.

Wow, what a great start to a new Urban Fantasy series!

Bryar's prequel starts with her in foster care, having no idea that she is a witch or has a witchy background.

After receiving her inheritance after her 17th birthday, she discovers a world of magic. It's confusing and scary, but she handles it with grace.

This is going to be an interesting series, the introduction of Bryar is fascinating, and I can't wait to find out what will happen next!

As this is a short prequel, it only took a couple of hours to read. It sets the stage well for how our MC gets her start. My heart really went out to Bryar to see how apathetic her foster family is towards her. C.N.'s writing had me tearing up! This teaser definitely has me ready to dive into the rest of the series, & I already know to expect great things from this author, having read his Cathar series.

This is so exciting–a new series by one of my favorite authors begins! This is a fast read that introduces us to Bryar– who has lost everything, but has found comfort and escape in books and through them has forged a better future for herself. She is strong, determined, and sassy. This is going to be a fun series to read, can’t wait for book 1 to come out!

A tantalizing appearance of a new hero, who just wants to read everything in sight. Stiff-upper-lipping through a very rough hand dealt to her, she must now contend with a rabbit hole into a world she barely understands, and the ripples it will put into her life going forward.
I can't wait to see what wonders and terrors this mysterious menace will put in her way, and how she will overcome them.

A novella that serves to introduce the characters for a no-doubt amazing series to come, this short book entices the reader with intrigue, mystery and uncertainty as we wait for the first book... As with their previous series (highly recommended), CN Rowan captures the dreams and misgivings of the characters almost immediately, creating a found-family that is as unorthodox as it is endearing.

Bryar Hawthorne is a seventeen-year-old orphan in foster care, unhappy except when reading and with no friends or resources.
She receives a mysterious letter advising her to go to a lawyer’s office in regards to her mothers will. The inheritance is an amulet with some money, just enough to give her a start when she finishes school.
This is a quick, short story that gives Bry’s background and sets up the first book in the series.

I liked this one. It was simple and start out a story very well. I loved the characters and i can’t wait to explore more into the world in the actual story. It did start a little slow for me, but once i got further in it picked up and it got me hooked. Definitely worked for what it was.

I bought this from the author, and enjoyed every minute of it. The protagonist is adorably herself, while the other characters are realistically irritating. The main quest for this book is unique and thought provoking. I hope others enjoy it as much as I did.
