Diane Capri has long impressed me with this series, which parallels the Jack Reacher collection Lee Child made popular. Capri continues to explores the race by the FBI to track down the world's most famous nomad for their own reasons. Some cases truly take the FBI in odd directions, as is the situation here, but it is when Special Agent Kim Otto and Reacher can work together that things get done. Capri keeps the reader engaged in this 21st novel of the series.
After the heist at a truck stop, FBI Special Agent Kim Otto receives word that Reacher needs her help. While the case seems like a simple snatch and steal, there is more to the story, especially when the driver is killed. It’s not his rig, per se, that is of interest, but what’s inside. It would seem that the shipment includes some highly sophisticated weaponry that has criminal elements killing one another to possess and sell to the highest bidder. These weapons could easily be turned on the US and leave the country vulnerable, which seems like what Reacher discovered and tried to prevent in the past. Now, he will need some FBI might and Otto is ready to offer it, even if they are not communicating directly. Tracing the shipment is only the beginning, as Otto, Reacher, and those working alongside them must stop something that only happens every blue moon. It will be one mission no one will want to mess up. Capri delivers well with this piece.
I have long found the writing of Diane Capri highly entertaining, which matches the intensity of any Reacher novel. Her narrative style is quick and ever-evolving, keeping the reader in the driver’s seat. Short chapters keep the story tense and Capri adds something extra to keep the reader wondering. While I have read all the Reacher novels, I never refresh my memory with the Child instalment that Capri uses as her foundation. Things trickle back as I read, but I also want these books to stand on their own, which they do with ease. While Reacher stays in the shadows throughout, he lingers and excites the reader until the very end.
Great characters emerge, both those familiar to series fans, as well as new faces to flavour the action. The development the reader gets with Kim Otto might be minor, but is balanced nicely with the ongoing Reacher crumbs. The story-based characters work well to complement the larger story and left me eager to see where things will randomly go next. This handful of characters work well and keep the reader engaged. Capri has her hands full, but never drops the ball with this stellar series.
Plot points serve to push the story forward and provide a great sense of surprise for the reader who seeks answers as to whether Jack Reacher will ever meet Kim Otto. The surprises occur and develop at key moments, forcing the reader to stay attuned to what is happening. This ongoing hunt for Reacher is present, but the casework along the way keeps the primary focus on solving things, not turning over every stone for a nomad that does not want to be found just yet.
Kudos, Madam Capri, for never losing your focus in this busy series.
Otto and Smithers are on their way home. After several promising leads and near brushes with Reacher, they are exhausted at a dead end. Cooper remains as evasive and mysterious as ever, always seeming to keep Otto on a leash but never giving her full rein, even seeming to work against her at times. With all their leads and sources dried up, they stop for a cup of coffee at a busy truck stop. The investigation is at a standstill, with nowhere to go... until they run into Joe Hogan, a truck driver who gets into a confrontation with a group of guys who want to take his truck. Otto and Smithers intervene, but many questions remain unanswered. A seemingly benign break for Java opens up a world of trouble, international, global trouble, and Jack Reacher is right in the middle of it all. Reacher gets a message to Otto, "I need to see you." Reacher has yet to show his face openly to Otto. He may have to this time!
This is the start of yet another thrill ride. The action begins immediately and never lets up. All the key players are there, and things begin to move quickly, but just as quickly, they escalate. Diane Capri has somehow managed to keep us on the edge of our seats for 26 installments. I can hardly wait for #27!
This is the newest book in one of my favorite series. FBI Agent Kim Otto has received a message that Jack Reacher wants her. Kim and her partner Smithers set off in the newest hunt in her search for Reacher. They are also assisted by Otto’s former partner Carlos Gaspar, who has retired from the FBI and now works in the private sector. I love these characters-they are very well-developed and interesting. In this hunt, they get involved with warring companies in the shipping business. It seems that military weapons and equipment are being stolen and sold to unauthorized factions. This is affecting Reacher’s friends, veterans and their families. While Otto’s mission is to find Reacher, they get involved in the illegal shipping crime. I can never put these books down (sleep is overrated, anyway).
I really enjoyed Shadow Jack by Diane Capri. She continues to amaze me with her writing—every time I pick up one of her books, I know I’m in for a great ride, and this one didn’t disappoint. The story is packed with action right from the start, and I loved the constant push to track down Jack Reacher. That sense of commitment to the chase really drives the whole book and keeps things moving at a great pace. It’s the kind of book that’s hard to put down because there’s always something happening. Diane Capri is just so talented at what she does. She knows how to keep the tension high and the story engaging all the way through. If you like action-packed thrillers, this is definitely one I’d recommend.
As a big Jack Reacher fan, I always re-read the source book before reading the Hunt for Reacher book it’s based on. And this time the two aligned better than they usually do; the author didn’t take ridiculous liberties and the story was more believable. Otto and Smithers (and Gaspar) are growing on me, so hopefully they’ll keep bringing the bad guys down, including one day their boss!
I love this series. I have read them all. Always wanting more. This one was wild! Another old score settled the hard way. Ahhhh, such is the hunt for Jack Reacher.
I sure hope the East coast trucking isn't really this corrupt. So much violence and death, of good and bad guys. And definitely no HEA which I really prefer in my reading. At least give us a "happy for now."
