This story was surprising. The characters, scientists, worked at a lab in an advanced future that had destroyed our planet. That travesty caused mutations that normally occur to be amplified in animals and transferred to humans. Finding the cure was a race and fraught with ill intent, psychological trauma, and dedication to do what is right, humane, and urgently needed to save lives. I actually expected the characters to be more explored, or exposed, might be a better word. I wanted to root for them, but I didn’t have a character identified enough that I loved and cheered for. Maybe a more in-depth creation would have helped that. Anyway, if I were asked about Adam or his fellow scientists and what made them tick, I couldn’t really tell you. It is a good story, but I feel it glides over the top of the details that would draw one into the center of it, making it memorable and wanting more. It is a page turner because you want to see if they succeed in their mission, and the pace is well done. And there is a character you instinctively dislike; writing about her was not mistaken or questioned, really. How Ruth set the adversary up is how she should do the others. I would still recommend reading the book; it is a good story and, as I said, a page turner.
Bravo, Ms. Milligan, Bravo. As a lover of science fiction, I have come to appreciate authors who, if their plot line calls for it, are capable of successfully creating a whole new world out of their imaginings, as you have done in “Dark Secrets”. Your world is a dystopian one, filled with creatures, humans included, who have been transformed into things of horror, caused by the release of a life-altering mix of environmental pollutants. And yet, humans continue to exist, among them a trio of intrepid “DNA” researchers who are dedicated to finding a solution to this seemingly intractable problem, while battling corporate rivals in their own ranks. Enough said. Strap in and prepare yourself for a good read.
I have read many sci-fi and apocalyptic novels over the years and I always enjoy finding a new one. This book got many key elements I enjoy making it hard to put down. While creating a world unkown and allowing your imagination to draw a clear picture of what the main character has been dealing with, experiencing disaster after disaster only pushing him more and more. I was quickly captivated by this book reading the first 100 pages in a single night. I feel this book was a highlight in the books I’ve read and would recommend to anyone looking for a new sci-fi mystery!!
Dark Secrets, by Ruth A Milligan, is a story with lots of surprises. Her descriptions are very clear and allow the reader to envision what is happening. I enjoyed the plot and the simple ending. It left enough unanswered questions to anticipate the next book.
I don't read books too often, this book Dark Secrets is a book that I would own and read again. Ruth A Milligan is a very talented author, I am looking forward to the second book. I am also looking forward to what she writes about in the future.
Dark Secrets by Ruth A. Milligan is a gripping and masterfully written story that keeps you hooked from beginning to end. The author does an incredible job of weaving suspense, emotion, and intrigue into a narrative that feels both intense and deeply engaging.
This had dystopian, science fiction, thriller vibes and I loved getting out of my usual genres of reading to dive into it.
Adam was such a relatable MMC- I could understand how driven he was to change the world. Dark Secrets was eerie, action-packed, and even managed to surprise me with some unexpected tears. I'll be sending my next therapy bill to the author.
I loved the world Ruth Milligan created, and I could tell she'd taken time to unearth creative details and systems that really brought this story and the characters to life.
