The Paths We Lay
To find temptation, we must lay our own path.
For the last ten years, I thought I was nothing special. I was just another priestess in the Temple of Temptation. One of many. Little did I know that my god has plans for me. He intends to make me powerful.
But what I will become is up to me.
For centuries, things here have always been done the same way - and the gods are now paying for it. Somehow, I'm expected to revive the faith. I'm their last hope, but no one is quite sure how I'm supposed to do that.
That means I'm making this up as I go. My god is begging me to become something new. My temple wants me to respect traditions. My instructors want to force me to follow their rules.
I just want to save my god.
With my three men, I know I'll figure it out. That is not the same as this being easy, though. Even worse, being "special" makes those around me jealous, and giving in to temptation is a part of our nature. When my guardian's family gets involved, things get infinitely more complicated.

Listen, I liked this book alot. and I loved the relationship dynamic between all of the characters. And not just the romantic ones! The father daughter relationship was SO heartwarming. But nothing happened in this book. The first book got a pass because we were learning about our characters and I honestly love a slow start. but god damn, nothing happened in this book either. All this book is, was all of the characters thinking about how much they love each other, then talking about how much they love each other. then worrying about how they love each other and holy shit. We get it!
There was just so much of the same thing over and over. One character would think something, then they would talk to another character about those thoughts, then they would all get together in a group and talk about it again together and HOLY SHIT. I get you are trying for realism, and good job you did it! but by god can real life conversations be boring as shit. I think through two of these books the phrase "I caught everyone up on what happened" was used once. ONCE. The rest of the time we have to sit through them catching everyone up, and the characters interrupting to ask questions or clarify. Which, again, is realistic dialog, but takes FOREVER.
Also, I love Zeal's character, I love his relationship with everyone, Its a unique way to write a god. Hes more of a man at times, but its really well done. My big gripe is that he kind of makes it so that we know any problem they come across isn't really going to be a problem, he is a god, he's just going to fix it. Yeah he is weak, but he's getting stronger every day. If ever they are in trouble he will just take over their body and give them super god powers or heal them, or what ever. Even though I love him, he kind of lowers the stakes.
another issue is that Nari is a Mary Sue in this book. She ALWAYS knows what to say, no matter what, its always perfectly done. and the only time she gets into trouble or isn't good enough is when people just decide to lie and say she messed up when she didn't. Yeah she has moments of doubt and times where she doesn't know what to do, but she always figures out the perfect outcome. and thats so boring :/
I was so interested in this story, and these characters, but like only one medium sized thing happens in each book and the rest is just talking about the same thing over and over and fucking. I can't do this any more.

I guess the first book is the sweet spot with this author for me. In the first book it’s alright if there’s a lot to explain but the second book is where the action should be.
But it’s not here. This book starts with three chapters of the heroine complaining that she doesn’t know HOW. She gets out of that headspace later but it doesn’t have the impact it should have since she didn’t do it herself. She was basically spoon fed the mindset she should take when it comes to the pushback she’s getting from students and instructors. The solution didn’t come from within. That was disappointing.
I’ll check out this author in the future in the hopes she gets a competent editor because the bones of good writing are all there, but right now, I’m just frustrated by the missed potential.

While I'm still enjoying this series so far, I will say this book rocked at a slower pace than the 1st book and became somewhat boring but not enough to stop me from continuing onto book 3. I just hope it's much better than this one..( fingers crossed)! Well okay, bye for now!

Unique
While the entire savior themes hits wrong notes for me generally, the humanity in this tale is striking - and makes the story. The intimacy scenes are intense, but so is the emotion, when it is called for. These characters are learning about themselves, each other, and this strange world - wrapped in a bubble in a decaying temple dedicated to a god far too few believe in any more.

I am now in binge read mode for this one. Work and sleep have been set aside. Love this group. I'm a bit iffy on the sleeping with strangers thing, I know its their calling but yeah. Maybe when they start partnering up it will feel less weird. Opposition and rejection but not enough to outweigh the good and make the story feel trapped. Didn't like the guns, having one in the high priest's hands? Sounds like trouble.
I panicked for a moment when Jamik got a POV. No, just no. Thankfully it was just him getting his own little harem. Nari finally found her path. Someone save Anver already, the chick he's with is awful. The former bully was oddly quiet and so was the high priest. Loved Nari's clothing with all the little symbol details. Zee randomly popping up and the reactions to seeing him are fun. Outside the temple life, the rest has a regency feel to it. I need more Talin and Wraythe cuddling, the two of them are adorable. The present giving was sweet. Onwards to the next.

Continuation of the same from the first book, they are in school and are being judged and persecuted by others who don't "understand" why she is special and marked by Zeal. I want to point out that they are not trying to get to know many other people and spread their truth but maybe that will happen.
They are young, use the word "kinda" A LOT but these are my normal issues with Auryn's writing so I just roll with it and keep reading. This story involves Nari still figuring out her "Path", Anver making steps towards a reconciliation (who knoew Zeal could be his buddy?), and Talin being invited home for inspection and humiliation (which of course involves Nari and his family). I liked the whole intro to Talin's family by Zee, nice way to entice them.
Ela finds a love for destruction, Wraythe continues to be my favorite and the anchor for the bunch. If Wraythe went, Nari would crumble and it would all be a mess, so hopefully they continue with these marathon communication sessions in order for everyone to feel balanced and loved in the 4-some, maybe 6 soon?
I have to say, not as excited to read this series and its starting to feel like filler. These are really long books and I am not sure if I will finish it all to the end. Doesn't mean they aren't enjoyable.

Another amazing addition to one of the most unique series I’ve read! I said this when I reviewed the first book, but this concept and story is so original, I’ve never read anything like it!
I was SO happy to see Nari and Wraythe finally be together in this book. They are my favorite pairing and I really wish we had more time with the two of them together. I did enjoy Nari and Talin’s visit to see the Baron, but I was anxious for them to get back to the temple. We see a lot of growth and self discovery from Eladel and I’m curious to see how it all plays out.
My one critique and it’s very small, is that I did feel some of the writing got repetitive at times. I hate to say this but I did find myself skimming just a tad. However, this is still a 5 star read for me and I’ll definitely be preordering the next book!

This book answered plenty of questions & moves the overall story arc forward. I find this plot line fascinating. I look forward to book 3.

* * * 3-I WON'T GIVE UP STARS * * *
I loved the 1st book in the series, I thought the premise was really interesting and I was looking forward to seeing what Nari would have to face up next on her way to discovering her path.
The pace on this book was really slow, so much so that I did skim some parts. I didn't feel like we got any tense or high stake scenes. There was some progress to the story in the sense that Nari and Ela have a better idea of what their paths are and there are a few more people able to see Zeal. I did feel it got repetitive at some points, they would often talk about their paths and what Zeal wanted from them, being the Voice, the Blade, the Shield and the Temptation.
Over all I was left with the feeling that not much was gained with this book. I will continue on with the series. However, I don't think I will abandon whatever book I am reading at the time for The Games We Play, like I did for this one.

The relationships in this just blow me away. They’re so powerful and beautiful, rich in every way - multifaceted, beyond respectful and overflowing with all types of love. Yes, the plot has me hooked and I’m flying through the chapters because I just have to know what happens but the true heart of this book is in the relationships between characters. That’s Auryn’s trademark but she excels and exceeds every time!!! These characters and their love for one another gets me all mushy and I just adore this book.

Kinda sad to say this but I’m not going to continue and I was really enjoying the story. I guess everyone has different ideas of what a RH is but for me it’s one girl and the guys are in love with her. But it seems this story it’s going to be about everyone in love with everyone. In the first book there were a couple of things that aren’t exactly my thing but I really enjoyed Nari’s story and I wanted to give it chance.
If you are okay with a lot of M/M and a circle of love then go ahead cause the story is pretty good.

I'm enjoying this series far more than I thought I would
These books are so detailed, so long, but they never feel like they're stuffed with fillers. Even the steamy scenes all serve a purpose. I'll admit that I've skimmed a couple, but there are a LOT of sex scenes (as you'd expect). I'm loving the character development from each of them, and I can't wait to read book 3!!

OKAY I AM LOCKING IN FOR A REVIEW. (will contain spoilers)
I have SO many feelings about this BOOK. I don’t know where to start. Rage, anger, fury, jealousy, heartbreak, love. HELP?
I can’t put my thoughts in order it’s so hard. Let me just start by saying: I love a good book that makes me physically ILL. Some examples would by Haunting Adeline, Juniper Unraveling, Nights of Vengeabce… you get the picture right? Mostly that means the book has extreme dub bon, if not non con.
When I read the first book, I was 100% there. Oh my gosh so in love. Everything about it. The door was open for the characters to sleep around. I KNEW it was going to happen. I was totally fine with the prospect. Then… it happened. And it didn’t bother me. Not the first time.
I love the sex lessons vibes of this book. It’s so dubious so hot so amazing. Nari was given an assignment to sleep with a man that wasn’t one of her lovers, and Ela the same. I loved the way it was written. It was so clearly zero emotional attachments, if not bordering on disgust (at least on Nari’s part). Ela was a little more into it, but overall, the way it was handled was great.
Then… the darkest night happened.
Nari and Eli were separated. She tells him to have fun. He sleeps with a man. For fun.
THIS is the part I had a problem with. I would have totally been fine with the prospect of sleeping with other people outside the harem if it was for an assignment or later for their duties, because it would clearly be no emotional attachments. But when it’s done for fun? I just don’t like it at all. It made me start to pull back from Ela. I loved him so much, but now I don’t. It breaks my heart. I just need more commitment than that. And again, not saying I didn’t want them to never sleep with anyone else. It was clear it was going to happen, but dang.
I got curious, downloaded the rest of the series on my kindle and skimmed. And I truly think I need to just not continue. I don’t care for the vibes coming later, and my heart is just broken because the first book was fantastic. The second was mostly good, until the last 20-30%. Then reading spoilers of what is to come, just not for me.
HOWEVER!!!! If a book gets such a reaction from me where I feel the need to write such a review, it truly does had a place in my heart. I mean… I will think about these characters forever I think. And who know? Maybe I just need a break and will come back later. Right now, I think I’m gonna pause indefinitely.
Also, wanted to take a min to talk about something else that slowly started to bother me: the repetition. I saw so many reviews talking about it, and I noticed it slightly in book one but it didn’t bother me. Halfway through this one, I really started to notice. I felt like every chapter was Nari grilling Zeal of what her purpose is, Ela feeling like he’s worthless… I hate to say this because so many others have too, but I did notice the way events would be repeated in dialogue. When Nari and Talon were away for the Darkest Night, and they got back with the others it was just them all sitting and talking. There was so much dialogue in these books too, which is a shame, because the scenes with descriptions were breathtaking and really set the scene.
So your probably wondering why I gave this book and the first one five star? I have no clue, I just know I will probably forever mourn what this series could have been without all the toeing the line of emotional cheating outside the harem, including ff content with Nari as the dom, and too many sit down talks and repetition.

Its no secret that I am a huge Auryn fan , and that The Paths We Lay blew my away again. It was again a perfectly written story that had me mesmerized from the first page till the end.
I suck at writing reviews , expecially without spoilers so bare with me please...
The Path We Take , it continues where book 1 left off with Nari and her guys , Tarin, Wrayte and Eladehl taking classes for Initiate Schooling.
Nari still is very unsure of what it means to walk the Path of Temptation, it also doesn't help some people want to see her fail because she is changes things up. But we will see Nari grow , we will see her become confident in who she is.
Zeal makes a lot of appearances ! We also get to know him a little more.
Like I said I suck at writing reviews so this is basically the end because I don't want to ruin things , but there is this scene that actually made my heart soar. It's a talk between Jamik and Nari and I had this big smile on my face. Also Wraythe was super cute in this book , he had so many scenes where I was like ahhhh ( I want a Wraythe for my own)
That said (apparently not quite finished), in this book we meet some members of the Ranndor family who are Talin's family and also Ela is finding out his own way into the Path of the Body , his kinks , his likes , his limits , and while I wasn't that surprised to learn about it , I do wonder how it will affect the others , not in terms of not accepting but , Ela and Nari will or are expected to perform together and I am really wondering how that will play out between them , or them and their Patrons if they want the two of them. ( this doesn't make a sense to anyone reading this who hasn't read the book yet 😅)

Good but….
I’ll start out with what I felt was good and why I feel you should read The Paths We Lay.
The author has a beautiful way of describing things. It’s very easy to see the world she has created, the characters and places she has described come alive in your mind. I wish she did so much more describing and less dialogue. I think this is the best aspect of this authors books. Followed closely by the storyline. It’s compelling, sometimes mysterious and intriguing. I’m very much invested in finding out where it’s leading.
So, why did I give it only 3 stars? I’d give 3.5 if possible but.. it’s repetitive to the point of annoyance. It’s as if the author does not trust the reader to grasp many concepts. I can assure her I understood the depth of the characters love and acceptance of each other and others involved after the first 3 times it was repeated. I hate skimming as you always miss a tiny detail here and there and found myself doing so because of this before I found it on audible. Also on repeat was what felt like a lecture on all the different types of relationships. How you are to perceive and accept them. It felt the reader was being told “accept and believe or your not welcome to read further”. I’m a VERY open minded Gen Xer. I understood, accepted, and supported each of them. If I can do this at my age then trust your readers to get how we are supposed to treat those we are different from and move on to the story because it IS a beautiful story and I feel people are chased off by feeling lectured continuously.
I will definitely continue with this series. I was so happy to find it on audible. The narrators did an amazing job. I could always keep up with who was speaking which isn’t always easy with such a dialogue heavy book. I have to say that having someone else read this for me is probably the main reason I’m able to continue because if it was me doing the reading I would have been skimming to get through the repetition.

Zeal the god of temptation
Damn! Book 2 is just as amazing as book 1.
Never read from this author before, I actually surprised myself as I was unsure this would be my kind of book.
Gods/priests/priestess etc thought it be all religion and crap but nope I was wrong and so very happy I took the chance with this series but also with a new author.
If there was a Grammy awards for books and authors then both story and author should win.
Not enough credit for both either, this series is out of this world. It’s written so incredible. The author has brought these characters and story to life.
It’s unique, quirky, heart melting temptation of its own.
I’ve fallen in love with everything about this series.
To these character having nothing at all or so poor that they are suffering, given a chance so young and offered love, devotion, faith, food, family, relationships etc
From having nothing to having it all.
It’s the perfect dream.
I love how it’s set in a time where cars don’t exist, ladies and men are so back to the days where men were men and ladies didn’t have a say or were told to looks after the children/ baby making machine.
These temples don’t work like that, they are open and treat each other equal, not judged if your on the bath of obligation to somebody on the path of body.
Sex is open, you can be with who you want, male or female. Share as many lovers as you want it’s there.
The temple help the citizens outside the temple, whether to give advice or offer a man to abuse so he doesn’t take it out of his wife or family.
It’s amazing how it works and all this comes down to having faith and believe in the god you are part of.
You want a book that is hot, different, mind gripping, addicting then this is your series!
Book 3 is too far away for my patience lol

Pulled yet another all-nighter
OMG from the moment my pre-ordered title hit my kindle I could not put the book down and read through the night to get my fix of Auryn’s writing!
Auryn has taken us from a ten year old heroine to a ~20 year old woman who is foraging her own path despite the majority of people in the temple being initially against her. She is slowly but surely making a difference and changing people to her side with the help of her family and her god. The character development is on point and you can really feel the trials that the group go through and can only look back on the events Auryn has written with awe that she has put something so seamless together. I’m waiting on the edge of my seat for the story to continue in book 3... waiting to see what else Zeal, the temple, and Nari herself have in store!
As a note to anyone reading through the comments, for the time I pick up any of Auryns work til the time I put it down, I am not longer on earth as I know it but on whatever miraculous world Auryn has crafted with her words. She is able to build such complex worlds and characters without making the reader work for the understanding. She has been my go-to author for years to escape life and dive into a fantasy world. This series, while unfinished, is quickly becoming one of my favorite series ever of hers (or just in general) and I highly recommend anyone giving it a try! Just make sure you don’t have to work in the morning... what is sleep even for anymore 😂

Wow!!! Just wow!!!
Nariana has been given what no other priest or priestess ever has. Her god Zeal gave her the Path of Temptation and in this book we see the very beginning of her journey to try and figure out what that means so she can serve her god. She is desperate to do so, and like anyone doing something that’s never been done before; she has to try and make things up as she goes.
We finally get to see the beginnings of the relationships that Nari will have with her guys and her god. I love that I got to feel all the things that Nari and her guys did. Experiencing these first steps with them as Nari tries to forge a path and they try to support her and each other. I love how these characters have flaws and that we get to see them. It makes it so much easier to be invested in them and the outcome of their journey.
This books covers the first half of their first year as initiates. We also get to see the uphill battle that is in store for these characters. Not gonna lie, seeing Zeal in action had me all kinds of swoony. I felt his feelings right along with him and was so glad when he stepped in when needed.
If you liked the first one, chances are very good you’ll like this one. Be mindful of the triggers as they are more blatant in this book than the previous book. I don’t consider this to be a dark book though. The overall feel is one of the frustrations and joys of doing something new surrounded by the people who mean the most to you.
I also recommend the audiobook as Kasi Hollowell and Aaron Shedlock do a superb job of bringing this story to life.

1st review for the series
All I can say is that I'm kicking myself for not reading this series before. I've seen them, but I got on this sci-fi kick, then some other fantasy stuff. then a few days ago I read, almost by accident, the first 3 chapters in the Path of Temptation in the back of book 11 of Rise of the Illiri (my 17th read-through). WOW! It was not what I expected at all!
I saw this cute little girl, weeks from starving to death, be surrendered to the Temple. She was claimed by one of 6 gods, and given a very lovely childhood, complete with another mother and father (sorta).
As she learns her lessons in school, she learns more than she probably ought to have about exactly what may be required of her as a Priestess of Zeal, God of Temptation. It's not as sexy as some might believe, but not as bad as she feared. She falls in love, with her partner, her guardian (a guard, not a parental figure), and Zeal himself.
This is a complex series, as all of Ms. Hadley's are. Her world-building is layered and deep, her characters grow and change, and the storytelling is awesome.
9/10 unicorns. Really good job!

Enjoyed
I enjoyed this book. I don’t think it was entirely my style but it was good.
Things that I loved:
The revolutionary way Hadley spoke about sexuality and sex education in the most sex positive was was amazing. I loved that. I loved that every experience is looked upon in a non judgy way.
What I didn’t love was that this book felt a little slow for me. I think I’m more into action and this felt like a talking book. Narianna felt whiny to me at time but I can’t fault that because she’s a 19 year old that doesn’t know how to do something or her path and what 19 year old knows that?! None. But the way she always was open and asked for help was also amazing and beautiful.
Also I love a plot heavy sexy book but I’m not sure this style of world is necessarily for me. I don’t love the path of the body it wouldn’t be for me, but it is for some.
Honestly I thought it was a good book and I’ll absolutely keep ready but maybe this style of story isn’t exactly for me.

3 slow stars
The pacing and everything in this book is slow. We get a snippet of interesting then slow wayyy down and toss in a bunch of different sex scenes. They are supposed to be learning how to be priests of the body, but we as the audience get a lot of the lectures glossed over. There’s a ton of telling and not enough showing going on here.
I got bored about 60% through. Yes we know they love each other, yes they will do anything ok. Got it.
Talin is also summoned by his brother to go visit during the holiday. The whole interaction here was a bit off for me.
And our FMC Nari has just been going through the motions and not really truly asserting herself. Also I still don’t get how being a priest of the body and learning these classes will help Zeal in his mission to further get belief in him.
There’s still just a ton of plot holes or confusing things that haven’t been explained clearly if at all.

This book lacks momentum. While most of us can relate to having anxious thoughts, and the portrayal of healthy communication in relationships is generally a good thing, there is a lot of writing, sometimes redundant, about what people are thinking and feeling. So the book moves in fits and stops, with the author's descriptions of characters overthinking things interspersed with explicit scenes.
Nari realizing that her "path" is evangelizing feels slightly icky to me. If this were Christian fiction with that same message...That said, one of the more interesting things about the series is the fictional religion of the god of temptation as being important as a release valve for a society's darker urges.
There are some moments that I enjoyed, like Nari's deepening relationship with her father figure, and Nari finally making a woman friend. I still dislike the lack of nuanced women, and friendships between women. I also can't help but feel like the author is trying very hard to come up with plot reasons to avoid FF content.

Something missing
Honestly this is a good book but I just can't like the characters. They are all interesting and have depth but it all feels a bit forced to me. I start to like them but then she switches POV and I lose the thread with that character. It all starts to feel forced. The sexy times aren't really my thing either. I have been kinda skimming it because it's just a lot of this person here and this person here and telling what they are doing. Kinda technical and it makes it feel clinical and shallow. In the end I don't want to keep reading the series because I know it will be even more people she sleeps with. I think 2 would have been better then five in this case. She has the family relationships and the romantic and then the relationship with teachers and gods. It overwhelming and doesn't do anyone justice. Not against RH books but this book just has to many characters.

I moved so fast from this book to the third that I forgot to write a review. And now I'm not quite sure where one ended and the next began. My overall impression was that it was still good but not much happened. The academy setting was ok. I get the idea for having bullies torment the main characters because they're different in some way or another, but my overall impression was that it seemed all a bit childish. And that was a stark contrast to the rest of the content which is very adult.
Again the main negative is that these books are way too long for the content in them. A like to have actual conversations in books so we get good character and relationship building, but do we really need to witness the same conversation with several people, in different settings or days? This is an ongoing issue in the next book as well.

Temptation
Nari, Talin, Ela and Wraythe are finding and learning their path in the Temple off temptation. Zeal is supportive but is letting them find their own way. I love that Zeal and Anver have become good friends and he is finding his way back into the group. Ela's path has turned pretty dark BDSM, he really has some scary needs and I'm not sure how I feel about that as the story continues. The love the 4 have for each other with their beauty and strength is what I enjoy, plus their extended family. Their bonds are strong. It's an interesting journey of temptation and helping out the gods/Zeal. There wasn't a strong cliffhanger but the story hasn't ended. It is an erotic novel and the BDSM darkness is in it as well.

I’m in love with Temptation
Yet again I’ve become enamoured with Auryn Hadley’s world building. Her characters are always flawed in a way that drags you with them and immerses you in their story. I’ve loved books 1 and 2 of this series and am already impatiently waiting for book 3.
Read this if you like a strong woman who loves hard, isn’t afraid of her own sensuality, and is surrounded by awesome men who want nothing but to support and care for her. Also, there’s some really hot sex happening. Quite a lot of it. Warning - may cause swooning and the need to climb your partner like a tree (or buy more batteries...) 😉
