For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books followed during the years after Noble's publication. Her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell, and for the mystery world as Kate Marsh.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.

I really liked the Aisling Grey series, but I think I prefer this one. So far, anyway.

May is a doppleganger, created from the shadow of her twin, a naiad called Cyrene who gave up her common sense in exchange. Because Cy created May while under a minor demon lord's thrall, and with his help, May is bound to the demon lord, Magoth, his servant to do his bidding. And because of her particular talents - being able to shadow and unlock anything, he gets her to steal things for him.

It is while trying to return something too dangerous for Magoth to have that she encounters Gabriel, wyvern of the Silver Dragons, as well as Drake, Aisling and Jim. At the end of the Aisling Grey series, trouble was brewing between the Silver and Black dragons - or between Gabriel and Kostya, Drake's brother. When they find out May is the infamous cat burglar Mei Ling, Gabriel and Drake want her to steal back the phylactery from Kostya. Things become more complicated, however, when May withstands dragon fire and Gabriel claims her as his mate, unaware that she's bound to a demon lord and, frankly, not caring when he does find out.

There are several reasons why I loved this book:

Since we learnt all about this world through Aisling and the previous series, MacAlister has wisely chosen a new protagonist who is already a part of that world, and so background, history and exposition is kept to an absolute minimum - which is very much appreciated. (One of the things that ruined Jacquelyn Frank's second book, Gideon, was the chunky exposition for the first few chapters.) She's also kept Cy's scenes and dialogue to a minimum, which is also very wise, as, lacking her common sense, she can get pretty tiring pretty quickly. The pacing and structure is such that she's never there long enough for you to get annoyed by her.

May, the narrator, is calm, smart, quick-thinking, interesting and passionate. Unlike the annoying heroines of, say, Christine Feehan - or even Aisling herself - she doesn't get all shy and nervous or stubborn and resisting, but follows her desires right into Gabriel's arms. And he's lovely, quite different from Drake, and definitely sexy in his own way.

I also love - and this is in the first series too - the international flavour of these novels. They're set mostly in Europe, and the characters are very international, though the protagonists are American. Gabriel's mother, we learn, is Australian Aborigine and taught him about the Dreaming, enabling him to follow May into the shadow world. I really liked that.

It's also pretty steamy. Others have commented that they found the courtship rushed, but I preferred it to the long, drawn-out, what-extra-obstacle-can-we-throw-in-their-way-Dark Angel-style courtship that gets so frustrating. And not terribly realistic, sometimes. You have to be true to the characters and their natures, and it wouldn't have made sense for May to be trying to run away from Gabriel all the time. She was lonely, had always been alone, and wanted what Aising and Drake have. Totally understandable. Besides, who could resist a smoking dragon/man? Also, because May is a part of this world, she doesn't freak over things like Aisling did. Aisling is much more palatable in this one, and not just because she's in the background. I liked her in the first series, but she was at times frustratingly stubborn and irritatingly loud. May is a very different character, and I really believed in her.

The plot, too, is handled deftly. It has a mystery plotline, not too complex but not too obvious either, and MacAlister handles the different plotlines easily. One of the problems I often have with popular mystery/crime books is the author forgetting details, or making connections too fast or too slow, things like that. I felt that in the last Keri Arthur Riley Jenson book, which was very distracting. I didn't find any plotholes here.

Because this book carries on the storyline started towards the end of the Aisling Grey series, and contains the same characters, you really need to read that series first. But I recommend both, and I'm really looking forward to the next book due out in October.

ARGH! Now I have to wait until October for 'the rest of the story'!!

May has a few problems. She's a doppelganger (a created being of her twin), she's bound to a demon lord (so she must obey his commands), she's being blackmailed by an anonymous bad guy, and...oh yeah, she just met the man of her dreams who is incredibly HOT and says she's his mate!

Gabriel is cursed. He pines for a mate, but "No mate shall be born to any members until a black dragon is accepted as wyvern." Then he meets May and is stunned by her beauty. When she can withstand his dragon's fire, it's official. She's his mate. Of course there's a few problems to work through with the whole blackmail, demon lord thingies...but hey, no dragon is willing to his treasures. And to Gabriel, May is his most precious treasure!

This is one of Katie MacAlister's funniest, and I think sexiest, series. The first four books told the story of Aisling the Guardian and Drake the Wyvern of the Green Dragons. Now, she's continuing the series with the first book about May, the Doppelganger and Gabriel the wyvern of the Silver Dragons. If you like hot sex, hot men, magic, and mayhem with a good dose of humor thrown in, then you really shouldn't miss this series!

Meh. I never particularly liked Gabriel. He's too boring for a Dragon and not really fiery. May and Cyrene are the worst. They grate in my nerves. Worst of all was the fact that Jim, Aisling and Drake have been turned into flat secondary characters. How could she do this to my favorite people!

Not interested in the story, don't care about the main characters. The only reason I'm reading this series is because I want to read the 3rd Dragon series and they're all tied in together. That and the fact that Kostya amuses me.

While I normally adore Ms. Katie, and her Dragons especially, I really felt like this book was majorly forced. It might have been the rushed courtship, which I thought that with Gabriel being that kinda guy he was, would have been breathtaking. Everything just seemed like it could have been better, and with the Aisling novels, her Dark ones and her fantastically funny single titles, I really feel like something was missing from this book.

The story was a great Idea, and the humor was amusing, and I loved that we revisited old characters, and met some new ones, like Savian and Magoth, but I really hoped for something complete with this one and didn't find it.

I'll read the next one, because it is Katie, but this book really left me wanting.

I've been waiting a while to get my hands on this book. May Northcott is a doppelganger (a being created from her twin); she's bound to a demon lord Magoth, who she works as a thief for; she has a twin Cyrene who gave up her common sense when creating May; she's in a lotta trouble for stealing from the chief archimage of the Otherworld; is being blackmailed, and now finds out she's also a wyvern's mate. Gabriel's mate to be more exact.

Gabriel Tahou, the wyvern of the Silver Dragons, was first introduced in Fire Me Up - the second Aisling Grey book where he healed Aisling's wound after the amulet was stolen. I loved Gabriel then, and he's just as great now.
This books starts off where Book 4 of Aisling Grey left off.

The Silver Dragons broke off from the black dragons and were cursed with no mates born to them. Hence Gabriel is mate-less unless he steals someone else's. Enter May. Who isn't born but created from her twin, or in Jim's words:

" May’s a virgin lesbian doppelganger wyvern’s mate"

I was laughing my ass off at the part where Cyrene tries to tell Gabriel and everyone else how Mayling cannot be his mate because she isn't into men or sex. Read it to know more. I love Cyrene. She's just to stupid you have to love her.

This book was typical MacAlister funny. Even the sex scenes between Gabriel and May were funny. Gabriel cannot seem to control himself around May, which while weird, made more quite a few laughs:

Gabriel: "Only because I am determined to prove to you that I value you more than anything else in my life. I would greatly appreciate it if you didn’t explore any more of my stomach, because that too will send me over the edge. In fact, I’d be eternally grateful if you would arouse yourself, and tell me when you are ready."

Magoth made for one interesting Demon Lord. I also enjoyed Savian character - the thief taker who was chasing May for the Otherworld reward. And there's more of Kotya, with his constant "The black dragon sept will regain what we once held but was taken from us" tirade.

Nice book this. It ended on a sad note, but intriguing enough to make sure you pick up the next book

How I missed the crazy world of Aisling and her Otherworld minions. Now the wyvern of the Silver Dragons takes the main role with his mate May, who is a doppelganger. Katie M. is one of the funniest authors I have read and this book did not disappoint. It had quite a few laugh out loud moments.

May and her twin Cyrene stumble across some dragons while trying to replace a stolen item. May finds out she can withstand dragon fire and Gabriel takes her as his mate. She is a little reluctant but not so much as Aisling that's for sure.

Unfortunately it is not so live happily ever after as it would seem because May is bound to a demon lord who uses her skills as a doppelganger to steal important things for him. When he finds out that May has something he wants very bad he orders her to give it to him. Things get a little crazy after that.

I didn't love it as much as Aisling and Drakes story but it was still enjoyable and I am looking forward to the next book in the series!

The book ends with a MAJOR cliff hanger. That kills me! I need the next book STAT!

I am glad they moved away from Aisling & Drake and started a secondary series with the same characters. With Aisling about to give birth it seems like a good time to shift to May and Gabriel. I liked the chemistery between May and Gabriel and am seriously pissed off that they ended the book the way they did because I want to know what happens! I kind think its a rip off that they ended the book at the pinacle of all the action. It builds and builds and builds and then.... Dead stop. Not cool. I need the next book...

When I started this book I was a bit disappointed that the characters were unfamiliar (as the book is a follow on from another series), but then suddenly all my fav characters were there and I was back in the hilarious world of Aisling, Drake and my favourite, Jim the demon, I will definitely finish this series 😊

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Barbara Rosenblatt, one of my very favourite audiobook performers. Sadly, this was NOT a hit with me. This was my first book by the author. I didn't realize until after I'd finished that there is a previous series in the same universe. Perhaps I should have read the "Aislin Grey" series first. I didn't enjoy this much at all. What annoyed me:
1) Poor world building - this was an "urban fantasy" in that it was located on planet earth in an alternate reality in which paranormal beings co-exist with normal mortals. However, it seemed like the author was just too lazy to invent an alternate universe. There was zero interaction with the "Mundane" world so it didn't feel work as an urban fantasy.
2) No character development - the protagonist, May, is an unusual paranormal being. The revelations of her various special talents are just kind of thrown at the reader when she uses each of them for the first time, without any preamble or sense of cohesion. The male protagonist, Gabriel, is about as 2-dimensional as you could possibly get.
3) Romance - there isn't really much. The 2 characters are abruptly shoved together and mating ensues. It feels very forced and rushed. There are a lot of subsequent sexy times, but it feels very improbable.
4) Language - This should have been annoyance #1 - if Gabriel had said "You're my mate" ONE MORE TIME, I would have ripped the earbuds out of my ears and across the bus. There were other equally irritating repetitions. It felt like filler. Overall, I found the writing pedantic and trite without being amusing.
5) Plot - The plot was all over the place and there was no resolution. The book ends with a complete cliff-hanger. IMO, an author can get away with this after a few installments in a series when the reader is fully invested, but to end "book 1" this way, just pissed me off. Sorry but I didn't fall for the bait. I'm not hooked and I won't read the next one.

Firstly, I love Katie Macalister's books. This one I wasn't sure about. Yes it was well written and very creative. This dragon, mage, magic, paranormal world is absolutely well thought out. Unfortunately I'm getting a tad confused with all the characters and all the types of 'people' in this other realm experience. The romance was good and I loved the dragons - I just got a bit bogged down with everything else going on. You really need to start this Dragon series from the beginning with 'You Slay Me' (Aisling Grey series featuring Drake and the Green Dragons), to get the best of this author's Dragon world. Playing With Fire is not a stand alone and has two more books that follow, before the HEA. I will be reading all of them in time. 3.5 stars.

supernatural super thief may (a doppelganger created from her naiad twin's shadow & common sense) is bound and obligated to the whims of a demon. in the course of stealing an object at the demon's command, she meets the dragon gabriel; romance & eternal commitment ensue.

macalister is really really cheating here.

by book 4 of her 'aisling grey, guardian' series, we've figured out 2 major weaknesses: while they're fun and breezy, the heroine's ditzy "oops, i'm in another pickle!" thing has gotten kinda old; a secondary male character is by far more interesting than the lead hero. and as though macalister read my mind, she figured out a way to fix that problem. poof, a spin-off series starring a much more grounded, sane heroine and that interesting hottie from the other series.

so what's the problem with that?

well, if you're reading this one as a stand-alone (and the cover doesn't tell new readers that it has anything to do with a previous series at all), the romance of the pair seems unrealistically lightning-fast. those of us who already love gabriel are a good bit more ok with all of this, but still, going from zero to forever in a handful of pages is a little rushed. i do like very much the direction this story is going. it's leaning a lot closer to urban fantasy than straight-up romance, thought there's enough graphic sex to keep it on the latter shelf. a quick & fun read, probably closer to 3.5 stars.

This is the first novel in MacAlister's Silver Dragons paranormal romance series and is filled with dragon shapeshifters, a doppleganger, demon lords, a demon in dog form, thief takers, stolen artifacts, intersept (dragon groups) conflicts, an archimage, a thief, a naiad, a love found, a sacrifice for love, sexy romance (how would you like zero recovery time ) with humor woven all throughout.

Fans of MacAlister's Aisling Grey Guardian series will recognize several of the characters here from that series. Those who haven't read that series yet, won't miss it (but will be reading it in the future, right?) while reading this novel.

This is Gabriel and Mayling's story. Mayling is a doppleganger - a twin of a "normal/real" being who is created by a demon lord when the twin gives up a personality trait to the doppleganger. Mayling's twin, Cy, not only gave up her common sense but also bound Mayling to the demon lord.

You have to love a book that can successfully reference Indiana Jones movies, Bruce Willis and his movie The Fifth Element and Star Trek humor, "I'm not a Klingon bird of prey...". I was giggling and laughing out loud during most of this non-stop action story.

Fans who appreciate humor with their paranormal romance and fans of the dragon genre should enjoy this book.

Warning Spoiler Alert!!!!
This does not have a HEA ending ... yet. It ends with a sort of a cliffhanger.

This is a spin-off of the Aisling Grey, Guardian series. Aisling and Drake are peripheral characters in the story of May (a doeppelganger of the naiad Cyrene), who is bound to a demon lord and must steal things at his request. Handy, since she can blend with shadows at will, making her a very good thief. After encountering Aisling, Drake, and a silver dragon named Gabriel, May quickly learns that fate had created her as a dragon's mate... Gabriel's. But who is blackmailing Cyrene, and how will May dodge the thief-takers who are after her for the bounty on her head? Who has the ancient relic that contains the power of the first dragon? How is Drake's brother involved in the disappearance of two of Gabriel's guards? Is he?
All of MacAllister's books are breezy and fun, and are actually cataloged in "Romance" in my library system. I guess they are. But the paranormal aspect is good, the characters very entertaining. (I especially love Jim, the minor demon bound to Aisling... he is in the form of a Newfoundland, and is hilarious and irreverent.) But this one ended so abruptly. I prefer a bit more wrap-up at the end of one book in a series, leaving some story-lines open for the next. This one just went "SLAM," like she wrote all the books as one giant novel, and at a certain page number her editors went, "OK, that's enough for the first one."

I read the Aisling Grey books quite a while ago and remember liking them a lot. I didn't LOVE them, but I did like them quite a bit. So, when I heard about this offshoot series, I put it on my used book store list to look for. I FINALLY found a copy, so I snatched it up.

I wasn't nearly as enamored of this one. I didn't particularly care for May. I didn't think the doppleganger idea held much water. To make a doppleganger, Cyrene has to sacrifice a character trait. She sacrifices her common sense. If that's what she chose to sacrifice, she obviously didn't have much of it to begin with. Several times, it's pointed out that they're identical, but then May is surprised when people connect them together. She says over and over again that she's an EXACT copy of Cyrene and since she gave up her common sense, May had it. That would tell me that they're EXACTLY alike except for the common sense, but that's not true in the least. They're completely and totally different people. The whole lie that May told Cyrene was a weird and flimsy plot device. It just didn't make any sense. And Gabriel was a flat character that I couldn't get behind. I did enjoy seeing more of Jim, but even Aisling was incredibly boring and flat in this one. I definitely won't be reading more.

I don't know why, but this book just didn't do it for me as much as the Aisling/Drake books. It was good, but not great. The sex scenes were too quick for my tastes. Little foreplay. The ending was a definite cliffhanger, and it is obvious there is a sequel (because the excerpt at the end of the book is from it).

The main characters in this book are May a doppelganger of a naiad and Gabriel the wyvern of the Silver Dragons. For those who are fans of Drake, Aisling, and Jim, all three appear in this novel. The bad guy Magoth is sexy as is the thief finder, but of course May is meant to be Gabriel's mate. Hijinks and sex ensue, but again, the sex isn't up to her usual standards.

Overall, I liked it, but I felt a little let down.

This sat on my to read list for a long time. I finally read it as part of a challenge and I now wish i hadn't waited so long to read it. I really enjoyed it.

May is wonderful! who knew a shadow could be so fun?

Gabriel is perfect. He's possessive, hot, and a dragon! I love dragon shifters. I only wish we got to see him in action (battle).

We're left with a cliffhanger, so of course I'll be off to read it.

There were some great lines in this. But my favorite came from Jim, the demon dog.

"We won't think bad of you just because no one's ever parked teh pink Plymouth in your garage of love."

or how about

"What? I said it politely! Would you have preferred 'ride the skin bus to Tuna Town'?"

or even

"Windsurfing on Mount Baldy?"

Ha ha ha! Gotta love demon dog!

Ok, so this book maybe is more a 3-star than a 4-star read. But I had fun reading it. Gabriel was sexy and possessive in a good way. May pulled off perfectly than thin line between independent and woman-in-love and did not become wimpy and needy as it happens in some books. And array of weird side-characters only made this book more fun.
I accidentally read this book before Aisling Grey series, but I managed to understand what is going on... I planed to go back and read the prequel series, before continuing with this one, but this book ended in major cliffhanger, so I am now tempted to read the next book and find out what will happen. Decisions decisions... ;)

When the 4th Aisling Grey novel ended, readers wanted to see more of the story. KM delivered it with this book, focused on the Silver Dragons, arguably the most sympathetic after the Green.

I enjoyed this heroine, she's not as funny as Aisling, but she has substantially more common sense, which was nice for a change of pace.

I'm looking forward to the next installation.

These books are perfect for a fast, light read that you don't really want to admit to anyone :)

I liked it! When it first started out I was skeptical. I had liked the previous series, but wasn't sure how the author would pull off another female lead character. Thank goodness she was nothing like Aisling, I'm not sure I could have dealt with that.

I did think the easy affection between Gabriel and May was a little hard to believe. I sort of wished that had been a little more drawn out. They met and then BAM, sexxors, BAM, teh loves.

*Inhalt:*

Also noch einmal.

More dragons! Drake got his story told and ended up with Aisling. In 'Playing with Fire' the beloved silver dragon, Gabriel, ends up with a doppelganger named May. Now a doppelganger is basically a persons shadow, and as such May can shift into the shadow realm.

That ability and her rarity makes her an amazing thief. However she is not a thief by choice, she is kept in servitude by a demon lord named Magoth. He makes her do his dirty bidding, having her collect all sorts of artifacts.

The woman who brought May to life is Cyrene, a naiad. To bring May to life Cy had to give up some part of herself. Unfortunately that part was her common sense. Initially I thought Jim was the most horrifically annoying character I'd ever read about, but Cy is definitely a close second. I don't care if she lost her common sense, she got on my nerves with her stupidity!

Dragon drama is going down. Gabriel's bodyguards are missing, who kidnapped them? Was it the unstable Kostya? There is a power struggle and May gets stuck in the middle of it when Magoth wants her to steal an object of power from the dragons. The wicked demon lord wants to rule the scaled beasties.

Naturally that doesn't happen because this is a light fluffy book. MacAlister doesn't write dark gritty stuff, which I think it quite nice. I liked the pace of the plot and found it to be entertaining. One thing I was not a fan of though was all the schmoozing. I get that May and Gabriel are hot to trot for each other, but giving your man a hand job in the back of a cab is DISGUSTING!

It's not classy, funny, or amusing! The idea that the cabby winked at her instead boggles my brain. If I were the cabby, I would have been so embarrassed and uncomfortable. I probably would have kicked them out. None of that in my cab! Ew!

So I didn't care for that part, or the supposed primal mating intensity that seemed to constantly grip Gabriel. I didn't find it particularly hot. It was more caveman-ish. Which is fine but I need more than that. I need sexual tension and witticism, not just a kiss and a throw down!

Other than those few complaints I liked the story. It's been a long time since I read anything by this author but it was nice to indulge in her writing again. It's silly and lighthearted which is just what I was in the mood for.

I will continue to read this series. This novel does end on a cliffhanger and I want to see how the heroine gets out of such a pickle. I am sure it will be amusing! I liked the snippets in this book that had Ash and Drake in it. Considering the circumstance, I am pretty sure they be in the next one quite a bit too! The gang is in for one 'hell' of an adventure now! Down with the demon lord!

Ugh this book is rough. So I'm going to rough draft my 'Bad Romance Bingo Card'.

- The Joey character (the guy friend who says incredibly inappropriate stuff that's supposed to be the 'comic relief') - Jim the demon dog. Good lord is he annoying.

- The female lead biting the face of the domineering male lead during an inappropriate moment - I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot of nickels but it's weird it's happened twice. In this one it's May biting Gabriel's chin as he's staring daggers at Costa.

- using a mental health term/substance term incorrectly - "to be honest I think he has a form of demonic attention deficit disorder"
"They gave us drugs!"

- The female lead is a virgin - Hate it. Especially when it's turned into such a big deal. It's everywhere. And she always has to be convinced.

- The female lead does something objectively red flag worthy - May telling Gabriel she revealed the phylacteries existence to the demon and touching her neck so that he would purposefully get distracted by her wounds and wouldn't be mad at her. Yikes.

- The previously disinterested leads boinking like actual rabbits - Good lord.

- The shitty best friend - Seriously, Sereenie is the WORST

- Refusing to curse/replacing it with dumb slang - Why even draw attention to it?

- The 'No that would actually hurt' - Gabriel going in dry and without warning??

- The female lead is 'tough' but is actually kind of a wimp - May is so whiny and weak, she's always taken aback and making huge blunders that she should know better than to do.

Wow I hated this book. Like I rolled my eyes nonstop through this thing. The only saving grace was that Gabriel had a sense of humor, but everything else was painful to get through. May is a wildly inconsistent character and is super annoying to follow. The story has serious pacing issues. And most of the characters are mind numbingly annoying or just repeat the plot ad nauseum.

I actually started out reading Love in the Time of Dragons, then saw someone say it'd be confusing to read without this one. Come to find out there's another series that starts before this one that would have helped with a lot of context! But I was already two hours into this one.
I'm kind of curious if I would like the OG series with Aisling and Drake because at least they had chemistry in this book. But I don't know if I can handle another one if it's just as bad as this.

Well That Was Different
Realistically, this book isn't going to appeal to everyone. But for those who enjoy paranormal romance, dragon shifters, mages, a cast full of quirky characters, and a mystery with a rom-com style that doesn't take itself too seriously--this is a fun read. It is a crazy story that takes the reader on an outrageous roller coaster ride full of LOL moments and face-palming dialogue. As if the "regular" supernatural characters weren't enough (i.e.- dragons, mages, naiads, dopplegangers, imps, etc), there's also a demon in the body of a Newfoundland dog. He not only talks, he has a fondness for all things related to bodily functions and sex; especially raunchy sex. He has no filter on his not-so-little talking doggie snout, and is generally completely inappropriate--and quite hysterical.

Interestingly enough, while the dog loves to talk about sex, and there are several seriously hot love scenes in the novel, one thing the reader won't find is adult language. The author has enough creativity to allow her characters to express themselves without the usual adult language so prevalent these days. Pretty refreshing. But before you go thinking this is a sweet romance story, be aware that the love scenes are still pretty steamy. They're not erotica, simply a bit more fiery than what would be found in a sweet romance. But hey, Gabriel is a dragon after all...

One more note for the reader, this novel is not the end of the story. It does end with a very angsty cliff-hanger *sigh.* Just go prepared. I hate surprises like that. It's a fun story if you'll let go and not take it too seriously. As for the romance: Yum. Gabriel is a solid keeper.
