Shattered Bloodlines #1

Whispers of Fate

Rate this book
Magic is a gift…or so the brothers were told.

For Tito and Ro, attuning to the Runestone should have been the start of a new life. Instead, it became a prison. Trapped in Atheron’s citadel, training under the watchful eyes of the Magi, they quickly realize that power comes with a price, and theirs is being shaped for something far greater than they understand.

As Tito struggles to control the untamed fury of the elements, and Ro wields illusions no one fully trusts, pieces fall out of place, and they begin to question everything they’ve been told. And the truth, buried beneath centuries of lies, threatens to destroy them both, because at the heart of everything lies a prophecy; one that whispers of betrayal, of blood, and of a fate neither of them is ready to face. Will they be Atheron’s salvation, or its ruin?

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this!

This was a good book just a little too heavy on the political aspect for my liking. Although since this is the first of the series I’m sure that was so we had all background information for the rest of the series. I will say that Urriah Wright has some crazy world building talent. The picture that’s painted in your mind is absolutely wonderful. It’s a wonderful magically descriptive novel.

I do wish we had more scenes with Ro and Tito though. I can’t wait to find out more about the Magi and what their intentions are later in the series.

DNF@20% - The story has elemental magic, that was beautifully described in parts. I liked the calm and reflectiveness of their life in the village, and connection with nature. The story moves quickly from here, following the two brothers in their journey to leave for the city and realize their potential magic. They are revealed to have powerful magic, that is set to change the course of their destiny. I was looking forward to reading the book, for the thoughtful discussion it might pose with respect to free will and destiny.

But on the whole, the pacing and character development was not fitting what I'm currently in the mood for. Based on what I have read thus far, I won't be invested in continuing the trilogy, so I've decided to stop here. If you like elemental magic, and some of these potential themes, defintiely give it a try.

A key detail that adversely impacted my personal reading experience with respect to the writing was the singular use of plural pronouns. It's the first time I have come across it, and it was unexpected as there was no indication in the blurb. In some scenes, it was confusing when multiple things or people were being referenced within the same sentence or paragraph. When it specifically swtiched to Ro's perspective, the use of they/their/them felt excessive. It was mentally jarring, and not an enjoyable reading experience trying to read through those parts. From a reading and language standpoint, it doesn't come across as an intuitive or sound solution. This is something that I believe comes up in American authored literature, and is more culturally relevant for English speaking countires.

English is not my first language - Hindi and Kashmiri are my native tongues, and I can understand 6 other languages to varying degrees. India is the most linguistically diverse nation, and all our languages have an intricate, deeply interwoven and nuanced use of personal pronouns in languages that is natural and inherent. It is not something we actively think about or even need to.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complementary e-arc of this book. All opinion expressed here are my own.

I have mixed feelings about the book.

It's a good story.

It's a story about finding a place for yourself in the vast world.
And it's a story about fate and destiny, of what you have been given and what you make of it.

The themes of the book are those that would relate highly with New Adults who are finding their place in the world. Tito is a powered representation- responsible, grounded, careful, willing to learn and prideful.

While I love the main characters, the side charcoal come in all shapes and sizes. All of them harping on the stakes made it a little overbearing a few hundred pages. Since I went in expecting adventure but found politics in the backdrop and tension in the front, I didn't know what to do with it for half the book. Then the pace begins to change. Tito and Ro slip closer to the politics and tension goes in the backdrop. And so, the pace picks up again.

The plot, unexpectedly, is more training and political movements than action and adventure. Considering it is the first book 1 in a whole series, I won't hold the lack of adventure against it. For me, the high and low moments of the book were a little amiss and hard to ride.

As for characters, I loved Tito. I look forward to more of Ro's scenes which were few and far in between in the first book. Other than that, the characters can be a hit and miss. There is a wide variety of side characters, annoying, harping, grumpy, interesting, intriguing, sly, dual faced and so on. I love the wide variety of dynamics they form for the story but don't necessarily like them.

I pictured Avatar the Airbender while reading this as the magic system was very similar. This is a story about two brothers and the debate of free will and fate. The bond between the brothers is precious and heartfelt. There’s a slight romance to it but not much, it’s a slow cozy fantasy book, lots of world building and history. The action doesn’t take place until about 75% of the book. The amount of time “hearty stew with crusty bread” came up was enough time for me to actually make stew! That goes to say, there were some parts that felt repetitive. The history of this world is told by the side characters the brothers meet along the way. I thought it was well done as it showcased how history can be told very differently through different POVs.

The dynamic between the two brothers was genuine and their growth is seen throughout the book. One of the brothers is non-binary, a first for me in a book and was much appreciated. The way the book ended sets up for some really big events coming on, excited to see how everything unfolds!

Thank you Netgalley and Urriah Wright for this ARC!

Whispers of Fate Review by Paul Smith

Whispers of Fate: Shattered Bloodlines trilogy: book one, is a masterful fantasy novel that immediately immerses the reader in a world brimming with history, atmosphere, and imagination. Urrah Wright’s worldbuilding is exceptional—layered, vibrant, and crafted with the assurance of an author who knows his universe down to its deepest roots.
One of the novel’s most delightful surprises is the Magi, whose grandeur recalls the legendary War of the Magi from Final Fantasy VI. At the same time, the elemental fluidity of the magic system evokes the elegance of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I also found myself remembering the first Dragon Age game and comparing the Magi to the Circle, which added another layer of resonance to Wright’s portrayal. Yet despite these familiar echoes, his execution is wholly original: the magic is inseparably tied to the world’s cultures and conflicts, making it both exhilarating in action and deeply meaningful in narrative.
Wright’s prose is immersive and assured, striking a balance between clarity and vivid detail. His style invites readers into a realm that feels alive on every page—where characters, landscapes, politics, and myth converge seamlessly. The result is a reading experience that is accessible without ever sacrificing depth or artistry.
Above all, it is the fusion of rich worldbuilding and a dynamic, culturally rooted magic system that elevates Shattered Bloodlines. Wright demonstrates a rare gift for crafting a fantasy universe that feels fresh, fully realized, and endlessly worth exploring.
For fans of sweeping lore, inventive magic, or simply a well-written adventure from a rising voice in the genre, Whispers of Fate: Shattered Bloodlines trilogy: book one, is a confident and well-earned five-star read.

I originally read the ARC version of this book, which is seemingly different from the published version. I loved the original, but after having read the finalized copy, I am even more in love. You can feel the characters transform on the page, from when we first meet Tito and Ro, to the very end. The world building is unlike any other I’ve experienced, and was genuinely a breath of fresh air.

For anyone else who has read the ARC version, I highly suggest reading the publicized version as well. It was like reading a whole new story, but with the characters I already knew and loved.

Whispers of Fate by Urriah Wright is the first installment in the Shattered Bloodlines series, an exciting, high-stakes fantasy that immediately captured my interest. With rich descriptive writing and thoughtful and impressive worldbuilding, you will find yourself instantly lost in the magical kingdom of Valcarta and completely unable to put this book down.

One of the first things that I noticed while reading this book was how real the characters felt, each one being unique and brilliantly crafted, including a plethora of strong female characters.

Tito, our protagonist, is the son of a fisherman, born and raised in the quiet seaside village of Ethyrae along with his sibling, the charming and mischievous Ro. Tito is courageous, loyal, and thoughtful. I enjoyed watching the siblings' bond evolve throughout the book.

The author’s descriptions of the seaside village in which Tito and Ro grew up filled me with a sense of nostalgia and a longing to be near the sea. As we follow the siblings on a journey to the kingdom's capital, Atheron, the reader is introduced to an entirely different scene, one replete with bustling streets, crowded markets, small food houses, and the constant sound of music, laughter, and shouting. It is a city teeming with life and dazzling light, and experiencing it for the first time with Ro and Tito was a pleasure. The author did an incredible job of conveying the novelty of the city to the reader, and you can feel the siblings' excitement and trepidation with every carefully chosen word. I must also note that the descriptions of food, in particular, stuck out to me! Smell, texture, and atmosphere are all described in detail, and the author’s lyrical writing style is really highlighted in such scenes.

The plot is unique and different from anything I've ever read before. The magic system and elemental powers are complex and constructed masterfully. We are partially acquainted with the history and lore of Valcarta, but enough is withheld from both the reader and Tito and Ro, building tension and leading up to the next book. The story ends on such a cliffhanger, and I can’t wait for the next book in the series! The ending is jaw-dropping to say the least, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since finishing the book.

I cannot recommend this book enough. This impressive YA debut novel is a story of magic, family, courage, and a fatal prophecy, perfect for fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I look forward to continuing this series and reuniting with Tito and Ro on their journey!

I received an advanced reader copy (ARC) of this book. This review reflects my honest impressions, but content, pacing, or editing may differ from the final published version.

Whispers of Fate is a richly detailed fantasy debut that pulls readers in with an opening that immediately captures attention with tension, and the ending delivers a powerful, high-stakes cliffhanger that left me eager to see what comes next in the series.

The book excels at character development and emotional depth. Tito and Ro are compelling leads that are dimensional, layered, and human in the face of vast forces. The supporting cast adds diversity, grounding the story’s heavier political and magical themes. The tension during key scenes is masterfully done and makes those moments truly shine.

However, the pacing through the middle of the novel slowed for me considerably as the focus shifts toward world building and political structure. The world-building occasionally made it difficult to stay fully immersed in the story, even though the writing style itself was approachable and easy to follow.

Wright’s prose is vivid and cinematic, filled with sensory details that make the setting feel alive. Still, this first installment feels like a foundation piece: a careful setup for what promises to be a much larger, more dynamic saga in future books.

Whispers of Fate is a promising start to the Shattered Bloodlines series by being thoughtful, expansive, and full of potential. While the middle pacing lags under the weight of its own mythology, the strong characters and high-stakes finale make it worth the read. I’ll definitely be watching for book two to see how the threads of fate unravel further.

This fantasy novel is exactly like its title — quiet, introspective, and a little mysterious. It features elemental magic, a strong sibling bond, and just the tiniest hint of romance.

📚 Plot summary

Tito and Ro are two brothers who awaken their magical potential after syncing with a Runestone. They’re taken to Atheron’s citadel to train under the Magi, thinking they’ve been chosen for something great. But as secrets unravel, a long-buried prophecy starts to surface — one that forces them to question everything they’ve been told. In a world shaped by magic and lies, the brothers must face a fate tied to betrayal, blood, and the future of their world.

🌀 My thoughts

The elemental magic system gave Avatar: The Last Airbender vibes — super visual and atmospheric. I loved the quiet early chapters in the village; they had that peaceful, nature-connected feeling that made me want to stay in that world longer.
But the pacing gets really slow after that. Lots of repetition, lots of waiting, and the main plot doesn’t really do much until the final quarter. If you're into fast-moving, action-heavy fantasy, you might get a bit frustrated.

There’s almost no romance — the emotional weight comes from brotherhood, sacrifice, and tough choices. If you’re into character-driven, slow-build fantasy with soft worldbuilding, this one might speak to you.

🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑 3 / 5

Beautiful magic, solid themes, but pacing was a struggle.

✨ what worked

✔️ Vivid nature + elemental magic descriptions

✔️ Sibling bond and found family > romance

✔️ A quiet look at fate, identity, and choice

🥱 what didn’t work

❌ Very slow pacing

❌ Repetitive scenes

❌ Writing felt stiff in some parts

✨ Recommended for

🌿 Readers who enjoy quiet, slow-burn fantasy
🌿 Those who care more about character emotions than plot twists

🌿 Anyone looking for low-romance YA with elemental magic

🖇 Keywords: magic / prophecy / no-romance / brotherhood / slow-paced fantasy

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!

This was a beautifully imagined, slow burn fantasy that felt like slipping into a dream. It is lush with elemental magic, sibling loyalty, and the unravelling of fate. While it took me a while to adjust to the pacing, I came to appreciate the book’s commitment to atmosphere over spectacle. It’s not a story of constant battles or fast moving plots—it’s a story of watching two brothers, Ro and Tito, be shaped by the world, by history, and by one another.

The worldbuilding was pretty immersive. You can almost feel the damp moss underfoot and hear the crackle of magic in the air. I was especially taken by the way magic is treated in this universe. It's not as a flashy tool, but as something strange and personal. The dynamic between the siblings was the heart of the story for me. Ro’s gentler and more reflective nature paired with Tito’s grounded steadiness gave the book a tenderness that fantasy doesn’t often linger on.

That said, readers should know going in: this book is patient. Sometimes too patient. Much of the first half is spent on training and political murmurs rather than forward action. And while I was content to wander with them, there were moments where the repetition dulled the impact. Some phrases and descriptions were used more than they needed to be, and the pacing occasionally stumbled because of that.

Still, the final chapters delivered. It all came together in a way that felt earned. The ending left me with just enough answers to be satisfied, and maaaybe enough questions to want more.

Really good and fast paced! Some parts were repeated (?) but not elaborated more, if you get what I mean. As I said before, some of the dialogues didn't really fit the scenes but overall it's still a very enjoyable story. The Magi is very intriguing, I want to know more of their intentions.

The characters were all great! I have no complaints about them. Of course Eryon, I am waiting to know more about him.

Thank You NetGalley and Page Turner Books, Inc. for the ARC!

I really enjoyed reading this book! The worldbuilding was rich and magic system were unique in their own way. The plot focuses more on training and the politics in thew world that sort of made me tune out a bit here and there, but it was overall interesting to see the last quarter of the book pick up! I wish the book was a bit less repetitive in the details of locations we had already been familiarized with. I can definitely see many others enjoying the books bonds, reflections, and relationship with others.

Unfortunately i was looking for a little more action/adventure. The potential was there but it just missed the mark. I believe alot of people will definitely like the elemental magic of the book. But the reading was a tad slow and confusing
May 27, 2025
I could not get enough of the magical world-building. The descriptions of the cities, the history and the atmosphere of Atheorn, it felt like reading a more oceanic version of Harry Potter to me personally (if Harry had a brother as well). Urriah Wright is a wonderful writer, and I truly hope they continue the series in the same writing style.
This was a heavily descriptive novel, though, so while it does a great job painting a picture for the reader, the action starts very late in the novel. I noticed this during the training period of the brothers. Its not a negative for me though, sometimes I'm here for just the vibes. Also, "Grumbles the great" is the cutest thing ever. Iykyk.
I'd rate this 4.5 stars

This was a really lovely fantasy read. The world is full of magic, and the bond between the siblings was definitely my favorite part. It felt very emotional but also quiet and slow-paced, like a cozy fantasy. The magic system was cool and different, and the way fate and free will are discussed in the story made it feel deeper than just an adventure. I also liked that the story focused more on friendship and sacrifice instead of romance. If you want a soft fantasy this is a great choice. Thank you so much to the author and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book early. I’m sharing my thoughts voluntarily and with genuine appreciation

Whispers of Fate by Urriah Wright is a spellbinding story from start to finish and the best fantasy I have read in years. The two brothers and their bond at the center of the story won my heart and made the high stakes emotionally engaging. The world building was magnificent. The writing was poetic and beautiful, and I often read passages over again. I loved the characters, and I can't wait for the next book in the Shattered Bloodlines series!

Whispers of Fate by Urriah Wright is a beautifully meditative, slow-burn fantasy that unfolds like a dream whispered through fog. It’s a story not of constant battles or high-speed adventure, but one of quiet magic, emotional resonance, and brotherhood. And while it takes its time getting there, the payoff is rewarding in its softness.

At the heart of the story are brothers Ro and Tito—two souls bound not only by blood but by destiny, history, and deeply personal magic. Ro’s introspective gentleness and Tito’s steady groundedness make their dynamic the emotional anchor of the book, and I found myself invested not just in where they were going, but in who they were becoming.

The worldbuilding is deeply immersive. There’s a textural, mossy kind of richness here—you can smell the earth, hear the whisper of spellwork on the wind, and feel the quiet hum of power beneath the surface. What I loved most was how magic is portrayed: not as spectacle, but as strange, intimate, and hauntingly personal. It’s magic that feels—and that’s rare.

Now, let’s talk pacing: this book is deliberate. It lingers. It waits. Sometimes a bit too long. The first half leans heavily into training sequences and political tension that often feel more atmospheric than plot-driving. I personally didn’t mind wandering, but there were moments where repetition—especially in setting descriptions—dulled the emotional impact. That said, the final quarter does pick up, pulling the threads together in a way that’s satisfying without losing the story’s signature stillness.

It won’t be for everyone, especially if you prefer fast-paced fantasy. But for those who enjoy dreamlike prose, elemental magic, and the slow forging of identity and connection, this will resonate deeply.

For readers who like:
- Emotional sibling bonds
- Meditative, almost folkloric storytelling
- Introspective fantasy

Final Verdict
Whispers of Fate is not a tale of thunderous battles or rapid-fire twists, it’s a story of echoes, bonds, and belonging. A quietly powerful debut that rewards patience with poignant beauty. If you’re willing to sit in the stillness, you’ll find yourself changed by the end.

Grateful to NetGalley, Page Turner Books, Inc., and Urriah Wright for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

Whispers of Fate is a gripping and immersive start to Urriah Wright’s Shattered Bloodlines series, blending high fantasy, dark intrigue, and human emotion into a story that pulls you in from the very first page. Wright has a gift for world-building: the landscapes are vivid, the societies feel lived-in, and the magic system carries both wonder and consequence.

The novel shines through its characters—layered, flawed, and compelling. Each has a sense of destiny pulling them forward, but Wright avoids the clichés of “chosen one” narratives by grounding their struggles in family ties, fractured loyalties, and the weight of secrets. The dialogue feels natural yet purposeful, revealing not just personalities but also the political and cultural undercurrents shaping the world.

The pacing balances well between action and reflection. Battles and tense confrontations are written with sharp intensity, while quieter chapters allow the reader to sit with the emotional cost of fate and legacy. At its heart, Whispers of Fate isn’t just about magic or war—it’s about the fragile threads of bloodline, identity, and choice.

For readers who enjoy epic fantasy with depth—something that blends the sweeping feel of Tolkien with the sharp edges of modern grimdark—this book is a promising opening chapter to a series worth following. Wright leaves just enough unanswered to spark anticipation for what lies ahead, ensuring that fans will eagerly await the next installment.

You know that feeling you get when you’re reading a book and suddenly you’re transfixed back in time, reading books like the hunger games, maze runner, etc. And it reignites the nostalgic love you had for reading? No? Just me?

Imagine Avatar the Last Airbender x Divergent x fantastical imaginative world building DND-esque details.

I was on the edge of my seat the last half of the book. If you’re a big fan of the Sarah J Mass emotional experience, this is right up your ally.

I know I’ve brought up a bountiful of similarities from other popular series’s but it’s out of true praise of how much this author was able to convey such intricate storytelling layers through a powerful world he built.

Urriah Wright brings this unique experience of allowing the reader to fully immerse themselves with this world through the collective detailed descriptions of it. You truly feel like you’re living within the pages.

I highly recommend this book to new or veteran fantasy readers alike. Relive the magic of feeling the nostalgia of being reintroduced towards fantasy but now in adulthood.

This book?? Epic. Vicious. Magic-drenched chaos. I was not ready—and I mean that in the best way.

Whispers of Fate throws you straight into a fantasy world that’s rich, ruthless, and brimming with destiny, betrayal, and straight-up power moves. It's the kind of story that grabs you by the collar and whispers, "Hope you’re emotionally prepared." Spoiler: you’re not.

The lore? Deep. The pacing? Sharp. The characters? Complex, messy, and real. And when fate starts moving, ohhhh it moves fast. There’s mystery. There’s action. There’s heartbreak. It’s giving chosen-one energy but make it dark, conflicted, and layered.

Read if you love:
🗡️ prophecies + fate vs. free will
🖤 morally gray decisions and high-stakes emotions
🌌 immersive worldbuilding with a side of pain
🔥 characters who make you scream at the page

Whispers of Fate is a must-read for fantasy lovers who want something that feels classic but hits with modern edge. Urriah Wright? Just dropped something legendary.

🩸A Prophecy Written in Blood and Brotherhood ⚔️

Tito and Ro enter the Runestone seeking power, but instead find themselves bound by secrets, deception, and a prophecy that could unravel everything they know. One commands the fury of the elements, the other weaves illusions, yet both must face the cost of magic - and the shadows it casts between them.

Urraih Wright’s "Whispers of Fate" opens the "Shattered Bloodlines" series with dark magic, tangled loyalties, and a brotherhood tested by destiny. The world-building is immersive, the magic layered and intriguing, and the tension between fate and freedom keeps the pages turning.

At once intimate and epic, this is a story of family, power, and the dangerous weight of prophecy.

Thank you to author Urraih Wright, Page Turner Books, & NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Whispers of Fate was a fantastical and fun read!

The strongest parts of the book lie within the world-building and artistically detailed imagery involving the scenery and magic, truly pulling the words off the page and allowing you to visualize every little thing.

The story-telling felt fresh and left me very excited to see where the series leads.
Urriah Wright seems to have the makings of a promising new author for fantasy readers!

I overall enjoyed this book. It had great elemental magic and the world building is really immersive.
However for me the delivery of the characters and the pacing were a little struggle. It also focuses on the political aspect for more than i would usually like.
