Blood Ops partners Frankie and Nina head to New York City for an early mission. Guess what they fish out of the Gowanus Canal? A Hell’s Belle prequel short.
I've spent close to twenty years in the New York City area, working in publicity and marketing for the entertainment industry. A life-long obsession with exorcists and Dracula drew me to urban fantasy, where I can decapitate characters with impunity. After writing plays for a long time, then leaving that behind, I decided to try to write a novel. HELL'S BELLE is my debut.
Another entertaining "Blood Ops" short story! I like these shorts a lot better than the first full length novel in the series, actually. They're better written, and they focus on Nina's actual field ops as opposed to her personal life. In the case of this story, Nina and Frankie's trip to Brooklyn is equal parts funny and gross: a good blend for Urban Fantasy.
According to the given timeline, the Nina of this story is also something like 20 years old, out on her first long-distance field op, and her characterization supports this, whereas the 30-something Nina of Hell's Belle sort of varies between seeming her age and seeming far younger. Maybe the author is just better at consistency and tight plotting in short form works at this time.
This was an extremely short but cute little read set some time before the first book, but still in the Hell’s Belle world. While it wasn’t very long, it felt good to be in their world again as a way to tide myself over for the next book.
Nina and Frankie are partners at this point (in the Blood Ops) and their friendly banter is adorable to watch. They were tasked with following up on a victim in the river, who just so happens to be more than they expect. There were a few hints of things to come, but overall it was just a little fan service to make you smile. If you read book 1, you’d probably enjoy this little glimpse of Nina’s past and her time right out of training.
An extremely short novella that only took about 15 minutes to read. Frankie and Nina are send to clean up what they thought was a vampire killing but turns out that not everything is as it seems. Frankie was LOL funny in this with his squeamishness but it with him being a 500 year old vampire I would have thought that he would have taken it better rather than acting like a little girl. Still it was funny!
3.5 Stars Read this after reading Hell's Belle #1 in the series, found this story to be short and not really relevant to the series but it is a little glimpse into the life of the H & h several years before the actual start of the series. Well written with an easy flow, and with a sense of humor. As of 1/3/17 free on Smashwords at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view... so well worth the time.
