Code blue in the ER. That's how I end up in his hospital. In my brother's best friend's care.
Dr. Blake Morrison is the star of every fantasy I've had since I was sixteen. Now he's the only one who believes something is truly wrong with me. The only one who can save me.
But with each passing day, each failed diagnosis, I see him changing. The brilliant, controlled doctor is becoming something else. Something darker. More possessive.
"These symptoms aren't random," he growls. “I think someone's hurting you deliberately. And when I find them..." His fingers clench. "They'll learn exactly how much damage a surgeon can do."
His touch sets my heart monitor racing, and what's growing between us is more dangerous than any symptom. More forbidden than any diagnosis.
But as my mysterious illness worsens and time slips away like sand through an
Will the man who's saved countless lives lose the only one that's ever mattered to him?

Kathy Lockheart is an Amazon Top 25 bestselling author and Kindle Unlimited All-Star of Suspenseful Romance novels. Her books—which have a unique blend of emotional elements typically found in women’s fiction and the romance and danger elements found in romantic suspense—contain themes that include dark romance antiheroes, enemies to lovers alpha tropes, and forbidden romance angst. When she’s not writing, you can find her silently cursing the person who put fluorescent lights in dressing rooms.
SECRETS AND THE CITY Deadly Illusion Fatal Cure Lethal Justice Grave Deception
Blake is a beautiful man. A morally grey beautiful man.
"Consider yourself lucky,"' I added as his terrified eyes began to fade. "If I'd found you outside these walls, your end would have been much messier." His breaths became shallow, desperate. I stood there, watching his face go pale, until his pulse faded to nothing. Only then did I reach for the code blue button, when I was certain it was far too late. "Time of death," I murmured, "is when I say it is."
Tessa is a conundrum. Why? Well because her brain says something but then her heart acts differently. I loved her at the begining. She disappointed me mid book. I cheered her on after that. Then slapped my head in frustration. To finally smile warmly at her.
Their story in brief? they were pining for each other since teenage years. I didn’t appreciate that their push and pull dragged for 16 years. His best friend (her brother) asked him to stay away from her. She never had the nerve to approach him. But of course she had boyfriends until that thing happened when she was 19 (not gonna spoil it). He never does relationships and the way I understood it, he never does hookups either. Was he virgin? Maybe?!... But the author never disclosed anything whatsoever about his sexual life.
He had a traumatic past though, a very traumatic one. I felt so bad for him 😭. But I understood were he was coming from.
When they finally see each other again after 2 years of radio silence (the reason for this fall out was mediocre, not completely convincing to be honest) is when she ends up in his ER. For a year she's been suffering with different symptoms while doctors kept assuring her that there was nothing wrong with her. But the truth is, she was fading away and the only one to invest in her health is Blake.
This is the first time reading this trope which I absolutely loved for it resonated with me.
I appreciated the mystery in the plot. It gave for a lot of guessing who the villain is!. And that twist at the end? At the wedding? Chapeau 🎩
And don't get me started on their brotherhood. Sinners and Saints? sign me up!
At her bedside, I brushed my knuckles along her skin. Too cold. The kind of cold that meant her cells had been starved of oxygen because I hadn't protected her. "Most everyone I've loved has left me, Tessa." My voice was barely a whisper. "Don't you dare leave me too. If you do ..." The words caught my throat. I'll follow you. I'l drink that same poison and chase you through whatever hell you're experiencing until my heart stops beating. My eyes burned at the sight of her. My fierce, inde- pendent Tessa, lying there helpless. "You have to wake up." The words spilled out, raw and desperate. "So I can tell you how I've always felt. I wasn't sure I believed in love at first sight, but if it exists, I remember the exact moment it hit me: watching you walk past me as a teenager. The way you ran your fingers through your hair, how the sunlight caught those auburn highlights. Then your green eyes met mine, and my world just ... stopped."
Tessa was just getting her wedding planner business in gear when she became terribly ill. Doctor after doctor told her that she either had nothing wrong with her or that they simply didn’t have an answer. That is until she ended up in the E.R. of Blake Morrison, MD.
Blake had long ago given up on having any kind of long term relationship, even though he once had feelings for his best friend’s sister. Now here she was looking beautiful despite her pallor after a fainting spell. Just as he is trying to figure out what made her sick, her heart stopped beating.
Blake did bring Tessa’s heart back online in more ways than one, but will he be able to save her from whatever seems to be slowly killing her? Will Tessa be able to save Blake from an icy life of loneliness? This was a five star spicy romance, complete with a medical mystery.
3.25⭐️ 3🌶️ A brother's best friend medical romance. It follows the story of Tessa Kincaid, who ends up in the ER, and Dr. Blake Morrison, her brother's best friend who she has fantasized about since she was 16.

Oh, my word. Guys. I didn't like this book. I FREAKIN' LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!Crash deserved a thousand stars, seriously. I was in complete awe of Kathy's storytelling and writing style so much. Prior to picking this book up, doctor/patient romance wasn't really my cup of tea BUT now I couldn't wait for more. What's more, having a MORALLY GRAY DOCTOR? Say less!!! This book was a medical romance I didn't know I needed in my life and I couldn't thank Kathy enough for offering me a chance to read her book and introducing me to Tessa & Blake.
Despite the fact that there was a sophisticated killer looming in the background and a seemingly unsolvable medical mystery, Kathy still managed to deliver an incredibly heart-wrenching story dedicated to all the people out there who'd been trying to find a cure to the suffering they endured. There were funny banters, unforgettable side characters, and above all, an unbelievable happy ending to Blake and Tessa.
In addition, every secondary character will get their own books and they will be 8 weeks apart from one another. For now, I honestly cannot contain my excitement for the sequel, featuring Jace and Scarlett & their boss/employee romance in Power, which will come out in October 2025!!
***Massive thanks to Kathy for generously providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.***
Just okay. It started pretty good but got boring pretty fast. The heroine was annoying and wishy washy and I wasn't a fan of the hero and how back and forth he was with the heroine. The chemistry also wasn't really there. I also didn't like how they supposedly always liked each other a lot but waited until they were in their 30s to finally get together. And lastly, there was wayyyy too many things going on in the book. The traumatic past, the weird brotherhood thing, the stalker. Too much. Not for me.

No Virgins
We know the heroine has had a few boyfriends and hero casually dated. I'm glad she wasnt celibate but... why tf did the heroine have to make it a point to the hero that she was never able to get off with another guy before the hero istg 🙄🙄🙄 unlike the hero who I'm sure got off with alllll the ladies he "casually dated".
ow drama-none. om drama- heroines ex bf makes appearances
Going through something in RL right now, so unfortunately, bear with this simple review.
It was quite good. Love the sick heroine trope (ONLY when it ended in an HEA of course, I'm not here to torture myself). The whole overprotective, I wouldn't give up on you hero is also a delight.
Brothers best friend, thriller/suspense elements, romance.
Tessa has been slowly Darin away the last year, an unexplained sickness draining her. With no doctors able to diagnose her, she starts losing hope. Then she loses her pulse. Coming face to face with her childhood crush, brother’s best friend, emotionally unavailable and handsome doctor Blake. After he literally restarts her heart - he becomes obsessed with trying to figure out what is causing her illness. While fighting his attraction to her and writing it off as brotherly affection, Blake will do anything to figure out her medical mystery - slay ghosts from her past and stop evils in the present out to harm her. But will he unravel the mystery before her time runs out?
Look, I feel like someone needs to tell the author that some ideas can just be saved for the next book. Like did we really need a medical mystery AND a past traumatic SA AND a stalker AND the MMC’s dead parents AND the MMC killing a foster father AND the MMC’s abandonment issues from foster mom (who had a terminal MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS omg) AND the murder club AND brother’s best friend AND second chance romance?
No. We did not.
First of all, the MMC is in aforementioned murder club, which is also the world’s least helpful friend group. Seriously, if I text my friends ‘911 meet me at the clubhouse’ and they respond with JOKES and don’t bother taking me seriously? I mean, what’s the point???
Secondly, the FMC’s friend was also weird and unhelpful.
I”m not even going to get into the honestly BANANAS plot because it’s just not worth it. I will say, however, that if you’re here for some doctor-patient medical mystery caretaking, it’s… it’s *there* but it’s not really the focus.
What I will say is that the entire timeline of the past relationship is so needlessly confusing, just so we can’t ever really be mad at the MMC I guess? Idk, I still found him a big old whiny baby and the FMC ‘disappearing’ (after trying to contact him for TWO MONTHS and getting ghosted) was 100% in the right.
There’s some stupid little side quest for the MMC to ‘heal’ his relationship with his sister, and while this could have been like, idk, something rewarding, it’s instead solved in half a page. So, that was a dud.
There’s also the ‘ice-man doctor learning that compassion and public crying are actually what makes a good doctor, not medical knowledge’ quest at the end. And maybe I could choke that down, except we’re told at the beginning that he has WAY better outcomes than anyone else in the hospital, so it doesn’t seem like compassion is actually the key to healing people? (Don’t even get me started on how we’re supposed to believe that crying over patients in the hallway is the sign of a good doctor. I don’t want my doctor to cry over me. That’s, honestly, WEIRD.)
I liked the main medical mystery that drove the plot, and some of the banter was genuinely amusing. With that said, the writing would benefit from better editing. There were too many rushed scenes, abrupt scene changes, and plot holes for my liking, and many characters lacked sufficient development for me to care about them. In my opinion, too much was going on in this novel between Tessa’s mystery illness, Blake’s past, a rival wedding planning company allegedly sabotaging Tessa, ex drama, creepy neighbors, past trauma, friends acting weird, a few murders and an influencer wedding. Trimming down and combining some of the plotlines would have made it a much better novel. 3 stars out of 5–a decent quick read but not something memorable.
Last year I read the "Cross" duet by the author and it was simply amazing!! For this one, Kathy was super sweet and reached me to be part of her ARC team. I'm super grateful because she thought about little old me and I wanna thank her so, so much for this opportunity and for taking time to interact with us, readers🤗♥️.
Tessa Kincaid was comforting with a medical mystery. She was constantly having different symptoms but no doctor was able to get to the bottom of her really strange condition. When she got herself admitted to the ER, she unfortunately bumped into the only person she didn't want to see. Why? Because Dr. Blake Morrison was the one who got away, broke her heart and the one who would go feral if he would find out about her condition.
Besides being Tessa's doctor, Blake was best friends with Tessa's brother, Ricker, who forbid him to ever date his sister. But since Blake took Tessa's enigmatic medical case, the constant close proximity will stir those feelings inside both of them, which will make the tension between them unbearable. Will they be able to remain in a strictly doctor-patient relationship? Will Blake be able to figure out what was wrong with Tessa?
As a fan of series with doctors, I was super elated to read this book and get immersed into this world. I loved the mystery around Tessa's case and I hated how the other doctors just blamed her for imagining all that. Blake was the perfect man to try to figure all out, having the right skills and the proper determination to find the diagnosis. Besides that, we were blessed with a wonderful banter, one which will let us simmer for a long while, but one I adored because I really do love a good slow burn🤭. I liked that this book had some suspense too which, of course, was tied to Tessa and why she was feeling that way.
I honestly had the best time reading this book, enjoying to the max everything that happened in this story. I loved the mystery, those tragic moments from the past, the amazing love story and the most awesome gang, one which was in fact like a family. They made me crave the next book from this series, being already super intrigued after reading that interesting final chapter.
First of all reading the author's note & Inspiration behind the story I felt that in my heart.
I too have been told things are all in my head or when I was 31 that I'm 'in my 30's now' and it was the worst!
I loved this story, every question and after every failed attempt for answers made me want to know what was next. Blake was AMAZING. Tessa was a survivor and truly made me feel for her in every way.
Their connection was beautiful and I'm so glad I got to read this story. I definitely recommend 👌
This story has ALL the things I love. A medical and forbidden (brother's best friend) romance with mystery, suspense, hurt/comfort and SPICE!
This book is especially for readers who love medical drama shows that bring the romance with steamy tension and delicious spice! There were many delicious moments that had me grinning and kicking my feet. I was also on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going to happen next!
Also, I need to mention how incredibly real and emotional the FMC's health story and journey is. Kathy writes a very moving and relatable story of being sick and not knowing why/not being able to find a reason or cure. It was so well done.
Crash is the first book in the Sinners & Saints Series by Kathy Lockheart and follows Tessa and Blake's story.
A medical mystery, forbidden romance, and an obsessive devotion that will keep you turning the pages.
When a medical emergency puts Tessa in the hospital, but not just any hospital, her brother’s best friend's hospital, things start to get tense between Tessa & Dr. Blake Morrison and the feelings these two have been harboring for each other over the years will electrify as things progress with Tessa's health. Blake is brilliant and controlled but as Tessa's mysterious illness worsens, he becomes possessive, protective, and obsessed in uncovering the truth of her illness.
The "Who Hurt You? and “Touch Her and Die” energy is off the charts! The chemistry between Tessa and Blake is so tense you can feel it on every page! Don't get on Blake's bad side because you may not see the next day!
Tropes: ✔️ Doctor/Patient Medical Mystery ✔️ “Touch Her and Die” Energy ✔️ Possessive, Protective Billionaire Hero ✔️ “Who Hurt You?” Vibes ✔️ Groveling, Banter & Spice
**If you've followed Kathy you'd know that this story is very close to the vest for her. I appreciate her sharing this little bit of her personal life to give us the story that I'm sure you'll all love!
**Thank you Kathy Lockheart and VPR for the opportunity to read this as an ARC**
Teetering between two and three stars. The story was good, it had a lot of potential but every concept was beat to death. There’s something to be said for subtlety and nothing about this book was.
I was so lucky to receive an ARC of this book…. It was just WOW! You can tell that Kathy put her heart and soul into this.. it is the start of a fantastic series I literally could not put it down.
The book is based around a complex medical mystery but is mixed with humour, suspense, romance and some very interesting characters. Dr Morrison has taken the crown from Hunter Lockwood and that’s a very difficult thing to do!
I loved the introduction of the rest of the sinners and saints and I cannot wait to see what their stories bring!
I was given an ARC copy of this book by Valentine PR in collaboration with the Author.
I'm not the type of person to give a 5 star review just because it's an ARC. So all reviews are honest.
Blake and Tessa have known each other since childhood, Blake's best friend is Tessa's brother. The brother's best friend trope already had me hooked, but what really resonates with me, was the medical mystery.
I could relate in ways I've not before done with a book, because, like many out there, I've been through my own medical mystery journey. The long haul, the hospital appointments, the effect is has on your normal, daily life, the referral after referral. The "it's all in your head," comment because the truth is, the doctors have no clue what it is and rather than just saying that, they blame the patient. But more, it was the emotional journey Tessa goes through, the feeling of wanting to give in, to just stop fighting, the excuses why and then finding that fight again to keep going. I understood, I connected, because I've been there.
This book had so much to offer a reader. The emotional understanding for those having been through their own medical hell, and an amazing plot, romance and characters. So even if you've never had that medical journey, this book is still such an amazing read!
The character development as the story progresses was a huge one for me because I hate a book that fails to have good character development, but this book succeeded and did so perfectly.
Blake's dark personality, hidden behind a doctors cool exterior, who takes touch her and d!e to the word, who's moral lines are his own. His own past history that's so intriguing. Developed in ways I don't want to share, to avoid spoilers, but he changed so visibly and learnt things not just about himself but started to see things in a different light and I loved this. I loved how it wasn't an instant change but a slow, true development of his character as the story progressed.
The characters Lockheart created are so well written, each holding the possibility for their own stories, their own adventures. These are no flat, boring side characters, they're fully formed and waiting for their turn to shine.
The story is moved along by the plot, which in itself hooks you in from the very start and drives the narrative through until the end, with a few side plots included, it really grips the readers attention and holds it until the end. It's not just a medical mystery, there's a dark side to this story, there's action and romance, a side of the forbidden and the underlying mystery just adds to the tension that begins to build from the first page. There are TW in this book so make sure to read them beforehand if needed.
I read this book in two sittings, it could've been one because I binged this book, but I was trying to savour it and make it last a bit longer. I needed to know what happened next but also didn't want it to end.
If you've read Kathy Lockheart's other books previously, you know she's not afraid to write morally grey men and I love this!! Blake is one of her morally grey men for sure and if this is the first book of Lockheart's that you've read, you've gotten lucky, because as much as I adore all her books, this is by far one of my favourites.
This is a must read for any fans of:
Touch Her and D!e Brother's Best Friend Forced Proximity Doctor/Patient Found Family Slow Burn BadBoy/GoodGirl Morally Grey AlphaHero Secret Romance Vigilante Vibes
I'm so excited for the rest of the Saints and Sinners books to come out in this series, but Crash is 100% a must read book! I just wish I could read it again for the first time!
Ohhh I’m actually swooning for Dr. Morrison! The MMC of “Crash” - he’s broody, smart, possessive and definitely gives all the hot doctor vibes. (Who doesn’t love a man in scrubs?!)
He’s come face-to-face with his best friend’s sister, Tessa, when she presents to his hospital with mysterious symptoms she’s been having since last year. They’ve known each other for years, but hadn’t seen each other in a long time… For good or bad reasons? You should read to find out 👀
The novel takes you on a joy ride and I found myself actually laughing out loud at the banter between the FMC and MMC. Also with Jace (I LOVE Jace!!!) and the whole Sinners and Saints group text they have. Trust me, there are twists and turns you really will not see coming. One of them I guessed, but the other I didn’t expect at all!
Along with good character development, there is an important message for people who are constantly belittled and undermined by the very doctors who are suppose to help them. Never listening to symptoms or your own fears and then just chocking it up to you having mental health issues.
I truly cannot wait to read the second installment of Sinners and Saints coming out in October!
Thank you Valentine PR and Kathy Lockheart for the ARC!
“Code blue in the ER. That’s how I end up in his hospital. In my brother’s best friends care.”
If you like Grey’s Anatomy (think McDreamy) but you also like a possessive “who did this to you?” MMC, then you absolutely need to read Crash!
As soon as I started this book, I literally couldn’t put it down 🤭 This was my first romance/medical mystery, and let me tell you I was here for it! Somehow Kathy managed to find the perfect balance of romance, spice, banter and suspense with everything being tied up with a nice little bow! For me, the star of the show was Blake our MMC 🥰 Somehow he was both possessive and so sweet and caring, the perfect blend of everything Tessa needed! And I did also genuinely like Tessa’s character. After everything she had been through, there was still a fighter in there. Blake just helped spark it!
And can I just say I absolutely loved the banter and camaraderie between Blake and the rest of the Sinners & Saints crew. I genuinely can’t wait to see more of those guys in future books!
✨ Tropes ✨ ❤️ Medical Romance/Thriller ❤️ Doctor/Patient ❤️ Brothers Best Friend ❤️ Morally grey protector vibes
A huge Thank You to @kathy_lockheart for giving me the opportunity to read this e-ARC, I loved it!!
Crash comes out TOMORROW 8/14 and will be available to buy through Amazon and Kindle Unlimited!
I liked this one—how Tessa’s challenges with her chronic illness went undiagnosed and unrecognized for so long was quite real. She struggles with going from doctor to doctor to get answers, only to be dismissed. Crash was so much more than just a best friend’s sister romance or even a doctor/patient relationship. Blake is complex in his own right, and I liked how the author builds the story of the other friendships he has formed, including Tessa’s brother, Ryker. That storyline is quite interesting, too. And when Blake opens up, his story is heartbreaking. I really liked this one, though not as spicy as I typically read—there is steam, but not a ton.
This is a new to me author, and this is the first book in the Sinners and Saints series and damn if it isnt off to a good start! The book starts off with the Authors note and inspiration for this book and I have a feeling that a lot of people [women in particular] will be able to relate to this book.
You can tell that Kathy was in it when writing this book. Normally I wouldnt read the "Sick FMC" trope because honestly it hits too close to home sometimes, but something about the blurb resonated with me and pulled me in. Im so glad I gave this a try, and I am really looking forward to the other books in this series.
Crash was my first book by Kathy Lockheart and I have to say... I am so incredibly impressed! A romantic suspense x medical mystery had me feeling like I was in the middle of prime Grey's Anatomy.
This book had so much tension, longing, and a MMC who is completely OBSESSED with his best friend's sister.
I loved this one from start to finish and cannot wait for the next books in this series. She set up book 2 SO well and I am really excited!
Ya’ll I think Wally Lamb put me into a reading slump bc the books I’ve read since then have NOT been it. This one was vague on the safety deets during separation. I know she had a bf and he didn’t do relationships but not sure what that really means. They both claimed it’s always been you buuuuut I’m not sure that’s true. They’re in their 30s and have “loved each other “ since teens so take that as you will.
The timing was sort of all over the place. I felt like a lot of time was skipped over considering they were basically in each other’s lives for over the past decade.
The drama was also a little much. The mysterious illness, the crazy time jumps, angst, ex bf, angry brother, wedding planner competition, secret society, dark past—-it was too much. Sort of just wanted her to pick a lane. The only reason I DNF was to find out what was actually wrong with her.
another flop! i was so bored :( but i also feel like im in a bit of a slump so that prolly affected my enjoyment. so many plot holes, insta love and boring characters.
Kathy Lockheart *WAS* a new author to me, but certainly not anymore 😍 A hot a$$ Doctor that’s willing to move heaven and earth to figure out what is going on with you PLUS he’s your brother's best friend and isn’t supposed to want you like that???? BUT WAIT. THERE'S MORE .. He has a dark side to him?? Uhh yuhhhhh🔥 Let’s not forget FMC Tessa, I absolutely loved her and thought she was hilarious & girl can make a SLAMMING blueberry muffin 👀😂 our poor girl Tessa just couldn’t catch a break for awhile though 😮💨 Thank goodness for Blake 🥹 But the ending??? I NEEEEDSSSSS to know what the heck is going on with those who I will not name because I’m not going to spoil anything 🤫 Guess you’ll just have to read and find out who I’m talking about 🤷♀️😉 I’m so happy I was able to get the chance to Arc read Crash! It was a goodie!🫶
This one made my greys anatomy loving heart happy. I LOVE medical dramas alone, but add in the forbiddenness of your brother’s best friend especially when said best friend is morally grey and possessive and I am immediately sold. I loved the side characters (is ‘hilarious friend group chat’ microtrope a thing? If not, it totally should be because this one delivers and I loved it), the banter, the suspense..all of it so good. Cannot wait to continue this series with some more morally gray men!
thank you to the author and valentine pr for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review!
this was the first book i’ve read by this author, and i really enjoyed it! i’m a sucker for a brothers best friend/friends to lovers situation, so this was right up my alley!
Blake and Tessa start their story when she winds up in his ER with a mysterious illness, and as it continues on as they fight her demons along with her medical mystery.
i wasn’t expecting this book to have the dark edge that it did, but it was a pleasant surprise, as i love a good dark romance🤣 Blake is truly a morally grey man, willing to bend the rules (and break some laws) to keep his girl safe🩷
i definitely recommend this book if you like — doctor x patient — brothers best friend — secret pining (in both sides lol) — medical mysteries — touch her and 💀
