When she went back to the university where she attended her degree of six years, where she met her first love, she recalled their story - how they first met, how they had been in love - the memories and how she remembered them exactly as if it was yesterday.
Ju is a Burmese novelist, well known for her strong, intelligent female characters.
Despite her interest in writing, upon her mother's prodding, she pursued medical studies at the Institute of Medicine, Mandalay. She started writing while in medical school, and her first short story (ရာဇဝင်ထဲမှာမောင့်ကိုထားရစ်ခဲ့) was published in 1979. Her writing career took off in the late 1980s, with her debut novel, Remembrance (အမှတ်တရ), published in 1987.The bestseller novel stirred controversy for endorsing Western existentialist philosophy and portraying cohabiting unwed couples.
She has published fifteen novels (most of them were adapted into films), seven collections of short stories and seven collections of articles on the environment. She currently works as a co-founder of an HIV positive children orphanage and also a participant in the HIV/AIDS Media Initiative and Yadana Metta Foundation. Her writings now focus on environmental conservation.
Juu is *not* one of my favorite authors from Myanmar, not by a long shot. I find most of her books far from reality, and her characters elite. But, this book, her debut novel, is quite different from her later works. A Mhat Ta Ya is a lovely and touching tale of A girl who was dumped by her boyfriend because she's too, ah, indepedent. The plot is simple, yet beautifully written and the quotes are tearjerker for those softhearted, including me. So, a 5 star rating for me. A must read.
A girl I know borrowed this book from the library and she said she was tired out by all the usage of "maung" (ေမာင္) words in the book. She asked me to give it a try as well. I didn't know that this was the debut novel of the author until I saw the older reviews. So anyway, here we go.
It was such a quick read. Either the story was short, or since it was written in my native language, I finished the book in a couple of hours.
I did not have any problem with the writing. It was very descriptive and the book made me want to go to Mandalay and visit all those places mentioned in it. But I did have a problem with the characters. The main female character was an educated young woman who was also open-minded, understanding and non-conventional. The male character sounded like a douche-bag who was sexist, old-fashioned, controlling and had a bad temper. It made me cringe every time the male MC said something as to control what the female MC wore, or who she hung out with, etc. But the female character was so hopelessly in love with the guy that she worshiped him. She put up with all those treatments in the name of "love". *roll eyes* Since I've read books like "Why Men Love Bitches", I couldn't stop thinking throughout the book that this character was definitely the nicest of the "nice girls" from WMLB. Oh. My. God. Can you believe it? I was so annoyed with her to the point that I wanted to shake her from the shoulders and yell "stop".
If I were younger, I would have worshiped this book for being so "romantic". But now I couldn't stand the characters. I'm sorry but this book wasn't for me.
PS. Even though I read the book two days ago, I don't remember the characters' names anymore.
This is my second time reading this book and I still don't like it. I don't like both characters, especially the submissive nature of SSH. Maung is a two-timer and she should have dumped him a long time ago.
My first Burmese fiction and I fell in love with the way it's written. The love story from the perspective of the main lady was so tragic yet beautiful. But oh, how I dislike the male character and his toxic masculinity. Their love was never going to work because she is truly herself and her မောင် could never accept her for who she truly is. Nevertheless, I love this sorrowful love story and the way she recounted their love story.
Read this long time ago coz my crush liked this book a lot 😅 well anyway at least this was my first book of the author , not very fond of the characters coz they seem too weak but the dialogues are not bad.
Hmmmm Everyone said they like this and even Sayama called this as her masterpiece.BUT, I DON'T LIKE.I don't like the personalities of characters.I think I dont like if female lead is too weak and give in too much to a freaking naughty man.
I don’t think that I can meet with the guy who cheated on me like စုစုထွေး did. I can feel how she felt but I’m not strong enough like her. Mg is totally a mf cheater I hate his character so much. Girls don’t be stupid you can forgive them but never forget what they did on you how they treated you how they let you serviced by yourself and please value yourself. Don’t be စုစုထွေး she’s probably be a forgiven type it’s ok to forgive but treating them like they didn’t do anything on you is not totally ok. We all sometimes acted like her but don’t be ever act like her. I can relate all the things she felt but I hate when she treated him like they used to. Overall, this novel is heartbreaking but she wrote every single word with her deeply emotions I can see through from her writing.
It got a heavy usage of ‘maung’ in every single page. And I do not like the male character at all. However, even two or three sentences attracted me to read this book.
Drenched in Mandalay rain and in her own yearning for Maung, Su Su Htwe processes her heartache over her ex as she returns to his (now hers) old house from their med school campus couple days.
This is undoubtedly Ju's most popular novel and I can see why. 1980's Mandalay came alive under her pen strokes. Ju writing always has that cinematic feel to it and the book from start to finish felt like a beautiful film. But the best part about A Mhat Ta Ya is how emotionally honest this novel is. The protagonist is fully self aware that she's still pathetically in love with her ex from her university days, enough to keep his house rented 3 years after they've broken up and him married to the girl he cheated on her with. Both Su and Maung are extremely dislikable, especially Maung who has zero redeeming quality even when reading from Su Su Htwe's pov. She bends over backwards for him when he's being a jerk and when she catches him cheating, she pays for their table (since he's broke) instead of confronting his ass. He came back to "apologise" years later and they held each other and when she asked "how about your wife?" He practically said "she wouldn't know. she's dumb, unlike you. If I didn't have this much over her, I wouldn't have married her" and then they giggled over some joke.
Not my favourite Ju, not even top 5, but Ju making me emotional over this type of character is hell of a feat.
