***Minor spoilers, spoilers for book 1***
After the Beater was rammed by a truck, Ridley has gone missing, and Link was found in the forest a bit away from the crash site. Later, Link and the rest of the group (Sam, Nox, Floyd, and Necro) discover that the truck in question belongs to Silas Ravenwood, who has almost certainly taken Ridley for experiments in one of his labs. Nox has had the location of the closest lab removed from his head, so Link thinks their best bet is asking John Breed, who was been experimented on by the Ravenwoods and may remember the location of the lab. Nox goes off on his own, using cash and favours in an attempt to get to Ridley first, since he thinks Link is useless. The remainder of the group go in search of John, so that they can find a way to get Ridley out of there.
I actually didn't really want to read this book. I read the first book and didn't like it all that much, but since I owned the second novel I figured I might as well read it. I didn't really enjoy it any more than the first novel. My main issue was the characters. Fact is, I didn't like a single one of them. Some were worse than others and some were more tolerable, but I still didn't like them. This book alternates between three perspectives; Link, Ridley, and Nox. Link is probably my least favourite character. I feel like he acts so stupid that it has to be a conscious effort. Either way, it's annoying. For example, for someone who's 18 and lives in America, I'm quite certain everyone knows that UK stands for United Kingdom, not Unified Kingdom. He actually thought that! I'm not Ridley's biggest fan either, but her perspective was the most interesting since she was the one trapped by Silas. Unfortunately, her chapters tended to be the shortest. I find Nox an annoying character, since it seems that all he cares about is winning Ridley's love, even though she's already in love with someone else.
Aside from the characters, the plot was okay. I was able to read it without wanting to put it down forever like I do with some low ratings. I think the only reason I didn't rate this 1 star was because it was actually an easy read, and I was able to sit down and read it without dread. I still found it a bit weak, though. The entire plot was getting to Ridley, so pretty much the whole book with the exception of Ridley's perspective seemed pretty repetitive. Nox's chapters were short, but Link's mainly consisted of find one person, that person refers to another to go to because they don't know the answer, rinse and repeat until we finally get to the rescue. The ending was okay, but I still don't feel like picking up the next book.
Overall, I wasn't too impressed with this book, but it wasn't terrible. I feel like this series just took Link, someone I didn't like, Ridley, someone who I don't have that much of an opinion of, and a bunch of unmemorable characters into a new book series. I remember liking the original series, and I may reread that, but I definitely won't be picking up another book in this spin-off series. You will probably like it if you liked Link and/or Ridley in the original series, but if you didn't, there's not really any super likeable side character to save you from the unlikeable main characters, so I wouldn't recommend it.
