I could see the Kyi Aye's style very clearly and vividly in the book. I think the character of Mi is really complicated and surrealistic. Compared with the other works of hers such as " Soe and Khine" , " Maw Hlya Eain Pyan" and " Maung, Ko Ko and Mya Nandar" , this is my least favourite. I didn't like the plot, to be honest. I would love to talk with a friend. May be I missed what she was trying to deliver.

This is my first book from this author and I am intrigued by her writing. It was a short novel that you can finish in one sitting. The plot line was a touch & go and written from a guy’s perspective. I would like to see more from the main character Mi’s perspective as well. Why she did, what she did, and her history. The author left us hanging there and we ourselves are to interpret as we want.

It’s an easy and short read, almost like an essay. I’ve finished this book in less than 2 hours.
Kyi Aye, being one of my favourites, has no doubt created a character and plots in a way that pulled me in.

Partly, it made me see the world in the eyes of Mi, and partly, I could feel the pain in Thaw Swe.

Overall, it was a nice read.
Yes, I am now ready to watch the movie!

အဖိုးဒဂုန်တာရာရဲ့ အမှာစာအရှည်ကြီး ဖတ်ရတယ်။ သူမီ့ကိုအတော်ကြိုက်ပုံရတယ်။ မီဝတ္ထုကိုရော၊ ဆရာမကြည်အေးကိုရော ချီးကျူးထားတယ်။ သူ ‘မေ’ရေးပြီးတဲ့နောက် သူ့လိုလိုက်ရေးပြီး ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဟန်တွေကို မတွေ့ရလို့ စိတ်ညစ်နေရတဲ့အချိန် ‘မီ’က သူ့အတွက် အသက်ကယ်ဆေးလို ဖြစ်သွားပုံပေါ်တယ်။ အမှာစာထဲမှာ အရောင်တွေကို အမြဲအဆန်းရေးတတ်တဲ့ အဖိုးတစ်ယောက် ‘ဝတ်ဒစ္စနေ၏ အပြာ’ လို့ရေးလိုက်မိလို့ သူ့ခမျာ ရှင်းရပုံ၊ ကလိခံရပုံကိုလည်း ရေးထားတယ်။ အဲ့ခေတ်အခါက google အလွယ်တကူခေါက်လို့ မရလို့လည်းပါပါတယ် 😄 ‘မီ’ က (Dead Reckoning) ဆိုတဲ့ရုပ်ရှင်ကို မှီငြမ်းထားတာတဲ့။

မီ ကိုဖတ်ပြီးတော့ Albert Camus ရဲ့ The Outsider ထဲက ဇာတ်ကောင်ကို သွားသတိရမိတယ်။ (Midlife crisis ဘာညာဆိုပြီးတော့တော့ label မတပ်ချင်ဘူး) ကျနော်စိတ်ထဲခံစားမိတာက မီဝတ္ထုထဲက မီရော၊ The Outsider ထဲက ဇာတ်ကောင် Meursault ရောဟာ ဘဝကို ဘာအဓိပ္ပာယ်မှမရှိတော့သယောင်နေထိုင်ကြတယ်။ ဖြစ်သလိုနေထိုင်ကြတယ်။ နေချင်သလိုနေလိုက်ကြတယ်။ နောက်ပြီး လူတယောက်ကိုလဲ သက်သက်သာသာနဲ့ သတ်နိုင်ကြတယ်။ ပြီးတဲ့အခါမှာ ဘာမှမခံစားရသလိုနေနိုင်ကြတယ်။ ဒါတွေဟာ သူတို့ဇာတ်ကောင်နှစ်ခုရဲ့ တူညီတဲ့အချက်တွေပဲ။ အဲ့ထက်ပိုသွားတာက မီဝတ္ထုရဲ့ မီဟာ သူနေချင်သလိုနေ၊ ဆိုးချင်သလိုဆိုးလာခဲ့ပေမဲ့ တချိန်ချိန်ကျတော့ သူ့အပေါ်ကျလာတဲ့ အလင်းရောင်လေးတခုကို ဖမ်းဆုပ်နိုင်ခဲ့တယ်။ အဲ့အတွက်ကြောင့်ပဲ တချိန်ကသေရမှာမမှုခဲ့တဲ့ မီဟာ ဒီအချိန်မှာ တုန်လှုပ်သလိုရှိလာတယ်။

At the beginning until reaching half, I was thinking not very interesting, it's not kind of the story I like.

But left with many thoughts once finishing.. Why မီ is reacting like this.. what did she really go through in life?

Despite everything, he keeps supporting her until the last moment, having feelings for her and trusting her, being strong to go through the society and be there for each other....

မိုးစက် လေးတွေတောင် ထိုင်ကြည့်ပြီး ကြည်နူးကြရတယ်တဲ့.. what really matters in life? Following after the materials or appreciating the moments like this?

နေမကာင်းတဲ့ အချိန်မှာ ဘုရားစာ လေးရွတ် ပေးသွားတဲ့ image... my last breath မှာ ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌လဲအဲလိုလေးဘေးမှာရှိခဲ့ရင်..

မီ is a classic femme fatale story about the character မီ who utilizes her extraordinary beauty to lead men to ruin. Despite being told from the perspective of a former soldier, who had no relations whatsoever with မီ at the start of the story, the main character felt drawn to her from listening to all the tales of love, sexuality, defeat and despair, told by a buddy from the army, who himself is မီ's lover. This inexplicable connection forces the main character to seek out မီ after being discharged from the army and despite being confident and even downright haughty about his own prudence on her advances, the main character succeeds only in becoming another insect imprisoned by မီ's web of lies.

I'll be honest with you, I wasn't a fan of the story. Most readers have put Kyi Aye's name on a pedestal when it came to Burmese literature. Even the writer who wrote the foreword went so far as to say that if anyone has the in-born talent to write fiction, it's her. I found the characters except for မီ extremely one dimensional. The main character is your typical Burmese self-righteous soldier who has a tint of manliness and chivalry in him, that he would go through any death battle for မီ's sake, even though he explicitly knew from the fate of his friend, that he is doing nothing but jumping into the abyss all over again. မီ was a refreshingly, complex character with a mysterious past, similar to the protagonist of her previous work "နွမ်းလျအိမ်ပြန်", a nihilist, and a Nietzschean intellectual, with an axe to grind against the world because of the injustice that she had seen since her childhood. However as a result of her complexity, the rest of the cast falls flat as a character. The protagonist couldn't have been more one dimensional. Since we spend the bulk of our time in his shoes, his questionable decisions made it a drag to read through. I enjoyed "နွမ်းလျအိမ်ပြန်" a lot more as we as readers get to have the perspective of the infinitely cerebral and elaborate female characters that she's so good at writing.

It's safe to say that I will be taking a long break from her writing for a while. I can understand the appeal of other readers to her writing but it seems that it's just not for me.

This is my second time reading this book. The first time was when I was in middle school, and I wasn't able to think far beyond the text then.

Sayama Kyi Aye's writing style wakens something inside my brain. She made me question morals in a twistedly immoral way. I felt like I understood the character Mi but not in the same way the narrator did for her. It was quite short, but I was absorbed by every word the author fed me. Can't wait to read more of her books!

Is Mee a heartless girl? Complicated daring soul! I would never understand someone like her. But she is pretty pitiful and lucky that there's always someone who takes care of her. The sad point is that they all ended in terrible and suicidal situations. Can one blame her? I am not sure. This book, somehow can draw the attentions of reader. Not so bad and not so good. :)
