A return to form. We got Cap sounding like Cap again, a new red head "hero" maybe and a great set up for the past, and the present.

A very good first issue. The tone is great and this feels like Captain America. I am very excited for this series to get some traction. I want to see how they do Dr. Doom. Chip is off to a great start with this one.

OUR SECRET WARS part 1
Jul 2025

"So I went out into the world. To answer the question.can I stop the bullies?"

A revamp to the early days for Cap..post iceberg etc.
it's a solid read.
Particularly nowadays it's difficult to read a Cap America comic without being someone forcing a political agenda on it...but Cap leads a strike force to rescue Diplomats in Doc Dooms Latveria..and there's enough subplots here to give it a chance and even come back for more.

Captain America #1 is pure retro fun — exactly what I want from a classic Cap comic. The vibe is old-school in the best way: bold action, star-spangled optimism, and a punchy story that hits all the right beats. The art leans into that vintage look but still feels fresh and full of energy.

It’s an entertaining setup that does its job perfectly — reminding you why Cap endures while teasing more adventures to come. Sometimes you just need that shield-throwing heroics to lift your comic mood. Can’t wait to see where this goes next.

I have never read a Captain America story but this was quite good tbh. The plot line that is being created and the ties to the modern world are really good. The art is stellar and I love the characterization on Cap. I also like watching the Caps history reflected in this Davey character. I’ll have to see where this goes.

A pretty great first issue, I love how Zdarsky is taking us through some of cap’s ‘early days’ as a hero for the modern era. Artwork is moody and cinematic and I’m intrigued by the new character Zdarsky is building up. Will he be friend or foe to cap?

Overall the issue read really smoothly, it wouldn’t be out of place as the opener to a new cap movie or tv show due to how things flow.

I made it halfway through the comic before I realized it was 9/11 😭 it reminds me of the West Wing episode after 9/11 happened and you could see the different reactions the characters had. In this case David Colton is probably extremely racist bc of the propaganda served to him after the towers fell – kind of like John Walker’s Cap in the MCU – whatever is in their heart will be amplified when given super serum.

It was also nice to see the OG Fantastic Four issue 1 and Reed be Steve’s Tony this time around

Anyway, Steve, baby boy, don’t trust David <3 and just remember who you are

This is my first captain America comic, and when I saw Zdarksky, starting out at issue #1, and becoming pick of the week…I couldn’t help myself but check it out. And I have to say I’m not disappointed in the slightest. We jump in to Steve’s life 1 week after being dragged from the ice by the avengers, but in a spot where he is still so unsure of the world around him. In my mind he has fit right in, jumping in at a moments notice to stop a terrorist from blowing up the UN…but that’s also where the problems begin. The terrorist he happened to face also served, through that connection Steve is actually able to talk him down because of it, but it also reaffirms how different this world is and so he goes back to what he knows, what he knew a week ago…the US army. It doesn’t take long for him to meet General Ross and for the start of what’s so compelling about this series begins…Steve’s encounter with Doctor Doom. Steve actually went and helped the fantastic four defeat Mole man all to get a sit down conversation with Mr fantastic, as he knew Victor Von Doom personally, and Steve is so new to this world that he wants to know who he is going up against. Turns out that superheroes acting on foreign soil is a big no, but countries aren’t so willing to say no to super soldiers. So Steve gets a green light to head in to Latveria and save their captured diplomats before it’s too late. Mr fantastic was able to tell Steve of Doom’s ego, the mask and armor boost that to the nth degree and he may have a way of shutting down the armor that he can supply to Steve. But that’s not the only reason Fantastic is helping him, in his father’s eyes and his own Steve is a literal living legend, he is the one who scared the boogeymen. And that once again puts Steve into a perspective for how big he is in this new world and makes him question if he is up to the task. As the issue comes to an end we see Steve suit up in stealth armor and get prepped for his mission in Latvaria, it also allows him to meet the team of marines accompanying him and taking on the name of the howling commandos. But there is one additional member who stands out to Steve immediately, someone else who brandishes their own shield.

See there is a huge part of this story I have neglected to mention. The story of David Colton. A scrawny red head with asthma from New York who saw the World Trade Center fall, and like a lot of people during that time…couldn’t help but jump up to be the first in line to fight back. We of course know the history and how many people died from such a pointless war, but this is a legitimately true perspective that so many people can relate to. And David’s story reflects so much of Steve. Just like Steve he was initially rejected because of how weak and frail he looks and acts, but just like Steve he has an unstoppable spirit that cannot be beat down even in the worse of circumstances. This seems to have gotten him noticed by high command and I am guessing he is a super soldier from the modern age. But what I can’t help but see is the major differences from Steve as well. Just from the concern in his mom’s voice, I can’t help but also see that this hatred and willingness to go to war isn’t based solely from wanting to make the world a better place and standing up to the bullies…but from a mentally unstable person who now has a lot of power. I’m sure he will degrade and show his true face as the series continues, and I can’t wait to see how Steve confronts it.

"are we worth saving? and if we are am i willing to become the thing i hate to save us? am i willing to be a killer?" the age old question for super heroes is where we find this captain America run at

"if youre depressed youre living in the past. if youre anxious youre living in the future. but if youre at peace? youre living in the present." interesting take for steve rogers to hear

"youre not police
no, ma'am ... im not. but im here to help." and que steve rogers revealing his costume and hop onto the police motorcycle in a badass panel that will have you feeling right at home

why is steve asking iron man (cant tell if it's tony) to explain to him the concept of the UN??
oh we're one week after steve woke up on the timeline

the font of steve's narration boxes is very fitting {uum update; theyre not steve's}

good looking panels where steve is in military background and tested when training

"maladjusted crew funded by tony stark seems only too eager to have you. it's a new world." way to mention the avengers by thadeus ross lol
and let me ask.. is it a brAvE new world maybe thadeus? lmao i had to
"the war is long over, and you could go anywhere you wished. so again: why here?
it's been a hell of a week, sir. ive seen some amazing things , but... youve read my debrief. ive lost everything. my partner--james buchanan barnes-- i watched him die before i fell into the ocean. my parents were dead before i enlisted and any friedns i once had theyre all gone. the only thing that mattered to me that still exists, still does what i need it to, that makes sense of this world... is here. with the men and women who serve." zdarky's dive on steve's state and ideas after the ice is very interesting and what the displeased part of endgame's audience wanted for steve's ending

fantastic four involved in this since steve's mission is doom
"two weeks ago i was fighting adolf hitler. now suddenly im in a brand neew world and wondering... is this fate?"

"neat trick in there.
the four of us opted to not have secret identities. for ben, it's impossible. sue can just turn invisible, and johnny loves the attention. im probably the shyest..." loving the reed richards characterisation

"ive had this since i was eight years old. im sorry captain america but youre a living legend. myself and so many others grew up with you. youre the counter to the stories of the boogeymen from our childhoods. youre the brave man. the onw who helps who fight evil wherever it lives. im incredibly sorry for all youve lost but im so glad youre here again. the world needs you.
these dolls... did they make one of bucky too?
well, thyre actually called action figures and youre damn right they did." AAAA THEY HIT THE PENTAGON THEY HIT THE BUCKY HEARTSTRINGS
ah they know how to make us emotional over steve and bucky dont they? the characters written for each other
and idk why but i got the feeling that this was zdarsky speaking to steve through reed

stealthy captain america suit alert!

throught the issue we are told a story very similar to steve's that has you questioning "why did they give pre serum steve red hair?" and in the end -spoiler alert- we see him carry the shield! boom, cliffhanger

oh and warning; captain america is usually getting political and this issue isnt an exception

I think i might just need to stay away from Cap comics. The center-left neoliberal nonsense of modern American culture is just on full, stale display here. Somewhere there’s an amazing leftist take on Captain America, where the cops and military aren’t sucked off on every page (giving Thaddeus Ross of all people that corny ass line about “something about the men and women that serve”… maybe I’ve got Zdarsky wrong and he does want to do some interesting subversions of the myths of our military) I doubt Marvel would ever publish something like that. I am sort of hooked by this first ish, but the looseness of the timeline and where it is in canon feels like it might confuse the story down the line. Does this take place in 2002? 2017? Just vaguely “post 9-11” doesnt work nearly a quarter century later. I have to reserve judgement, you cant really tell squat from one issue, I could look back at this in six months and think completely differently, but my first impression isnt good, the art is not my cup of tea, and the Colton character has potential to be either pretty interesting or just unbearable.

“…i was just another solider. trying to survive. trying to help ensure the world had freedom. but now the world has built me into something more. can i embrace it? do i fight it? … will the stars and stripes be my armor?”

THIS is the perfect captain america. the tone, the way steve handles these situations that are completely new to him … everything here is beautifully done by zdarsky. i found the opening of 9/11 to be a shock but it’s interesting to see where this is going, how children who saw these attacks grew up. i have to assume david takes the steve path and takes super serum but is the antithesis of steve’s moral compass and is strictly looking for power / revenge on those who mistreated him. an interesting commentary on the military and how it preys on insecure children in my opinion . this may be the best out of marvel right now and i can’t wait a full month in between issues.

Ojalá no me decepcione.

Very very interesting new take on Captain America! Zdarsky once again proves himself to be the most interesting writer working for the House of Ideas today. He’s not my favorite, I like Gerry Duggan and Al Ewing and Steve Foxe and Kieron Gillen more, but his writing is damn interesting if nothing else. I love the big swings! Can’t wait to see where this goes.

This is a great jump off point.

This is a great jump-off point for any reader, old or new. It's a hard reboot. It stays loyal to the origin story with a lite twist. Love the artwork. Love the story. I can't wait for more.

Not just mind blowingly awesome, but a good start to what I'm hoping will be a great run. I'm gonna see where it goes, I'm a big Cap fan & Zdarsky is continuing to prove himself to be one of the better writers in comics these days, so this has promise.
