“What was it about grief that made all other emotions feel small?”

Elliot Sawyer has spent years trying to answer that question. Ever since her father’s sudden death and a vile betrayal, she’s buried herself in work, travel, and liquor. Building walls so high no one would dare climb them.

Love isn’t safe.

Trust isn’t an option.

And letting someone in only leads to heartbreak.

But grief isn’t something you can outrun. It lingers—waiting, demanding to be felt. And when the past refuses to stay buried, Ellie is forced to ask herself if she’s strong enough to face it—or if she’ll keep pushing away the one person who refuses to let her go.

Elliot Greene.

Older, steady, and battling a body that no longer listens, he understands loss in a way most people never could. He sees the grief she won’t talk about, the weight she pretends isn’t there. And worse—he makes her want to stop running.

But love has never come easy for either of them.

He wants her to trust him. She wants to believe he won’t break her. And with every stolen glance, every careful touch, he starts to feel like everything she’s been missing.

New Growth is a beautiful story about finding love, surviving grief, and rediscovering oneself. Ellie’s journey is deeply heartbreaking — there were so many moments when I wished I could reach through the pages and wrap her in a hug. Yet, the way Elliot loves her and tends to her heart is truly beyond words. This is the kind of book I wish I could experience for the first time all over again. Their story is tender, emotional, and utterly unforgettable.

We’re introduced to Ellie and sadly her grief in the first few pages. I immediately became protective of her against her family, however, Ellie seemed perfectly fine with how they treated and spoke to her. I cheered her on when she stood her ground and moved to Thailand. But Ellie took me through it as I didn’t see any character growth after she spent two years there to reset her life. I just knew there would be healing and growth to come out of taking a sabbatical such as that.

It was hard for me to give a lot of grace to Ellie because she treated the person who was there for her and had her best interests at heart as if they were the worse person in the world. Even though her thoughts told us otherwise, but her actions and even her words towards them were harsh and selfish most of the time. While the people who berated her, used her, and treated her like the scum of the earth, received so much grace and understanding from her.

She was a ball of confusion and he was so clear and intentional. I don’t want to rely on the age gap as a reason because Ellie was a smart young woman and knew in her mind he was her protector and had her best intentions at heart.
I wish we could’ve experienced her receiving therapy and grief counseling. Love heals, absolutely, but Ellie needed a lot of professional help that just being in love doesn’t resolve.
There were a few major things at the end of the story that we did not get answers to and it would’ve been nice to wrap those up as well.

New Growth is hands down my top read of 2025 so far. It’s a slow burn in every sense of the word—and listen, if you had told me I’d be somewhere crying over one? I would’ve hit you with a “girl, please.” But here I am, giving this book its full flowers, because the Elliots had me locked in from the very beginning.
It’s been a minute since I’ve seen myself so clearly in FMC, but Elliot aka Ellie? Whew. Sis held a mirror to my face and whispered, “Looka there, looka there.” Like Ellie, losing the anchor in my life left me reeling. Life kept swinging, And I couldn’t help but think—if I’d had someone soft like Elliot aka El to land on? Baby… things might’ve hit different. Now El? He is book bae certified. Gentle, grounded, patient, emotionally present—he’s that quiet strength that makes you exhale. The way he creates safety for Ellie? That’s a man. This story is full of emotional depth, layered character development, and a portrayal of chronic illness that felt real, tender, and done with care. You can feel that Taahesi B. didn’t just write this—she poured into it. The emotional intimacy builds so naturally that by the time they finally cross that line—around the 70% mark—it doesn’t feel late. It feels earned. And the payoff?Worth every second.I found myself wishing for El’s POV—especially to understand how he carries his own battles and still shows up so fully for someone else. His journey, his career, his heart… I wanted to sit inside his mind just a little longer. The pacing toward the end felt a bit rushed, but it doesn’t take away from what this story gave me. If you’re craving a love story that feels intentional, grown, and full of heart—New Growth needs to be on your shelf.

‘New Growth’ is a passionate, heartbreaking slow burn that took me on a powerful journey through grief, betrayal, and healing. Elliot “Ellie” Sawyer is hit hard by the loss of the one person who truly understood her. As if that weren’t enough, she’s soon blindsided by a deep betrayal, leaving her to pick up the pieces of her shattered heart.

Then comes Elliot “El” Greene — and let me tell you, this man is everything. Kind, patient, intuitive, and thoughtful are just a few of the words I’d use to describe him. Despite carrying his own pain, El shows up for Ellie in a way that feels both gentle and unwavering. Even while dealing with his own battles, he helps guide her through her grief with compassion and care.

I’ll admit, Ellie tested my patience through a large part of the book — about 80% — but El’s steady presence and the way he poured into her made it all worth it.

While I did enjoy this read, my only critique would be the pacing of Ellie’s character development. I would’ve loved to see her growth start a bit earlier. Still, New Growth delivers a moving story that’s well worth the read.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC copy for this book.

Elliot Sawyer has never done anything for herself, always so eager to please, and yet she's treated like garbage.

It tips a breaking a point and then she leaves with a big amount of money to try and make something for herself.

Elliot Greene is just chefs kiss💋 . He actually acts his age, he communicates instead of just being frustrated with her.

And it's finally a legal age gap. This is the second age gap romance I am reading that is actually legal, is the world finally healing 😭?

This book had me in an unexpected chokehold! I was completely rapt by the storyline and could not stop reading until the end. This book highlights Black art, culture and creativity while celebrating Black love in tandem. Taahesi gently weaves in conditions and circumstances that threaten Black families and Black love (medically and emotionally). I LOVED the correlation between hair care and self care. Such authentic writing and storytelling! This was a great read! I will definitely need to acquire a copy for my personal collection.

A true slow burn. Tbh I almost soft dnf'Ed this ONLY because the side characters were upsetting me so bad. E's family is .... unbearable, certain friends... unbearable! And I'm sensitive ok!? It was triggering me !! 😂😂 but I'm so glad I pushed through because El & E are two beautiful souls. E had every barrier up. Everything that could have been yes was a no (and for good reason) but one funny day at the coffee shop changed both their lives, and for the better. The care, craziness, drama and love within this "friendship" reeled me in y'all ! I want a El 😩😂♥️♥️ Great character development For Elliot (E) I smiled so big and shed a few tears. One thing that will always get me is characters evolving!! It's make a read so worth it !!! Is that a trope? If not it should be

El & Ellie 🤍

New Growth was truly an emotional journey that follows Elliot Sawyer through grief, betrayal, self-discovery, love, depression etc. It is also a great reminder to prioritize self care while navigating through life. Once you’ve given everything to everyone what is left for you?

I absolutely loved Elliot times two and seeing their relationship grow during those harder times.

I had the pleasure of reading an advanced reader copy of this beautiful story. This book is about more than just love—it’s about healing, rediscovery, and finally choosing yourself after betrayal and grief.

The story follows Ellie, who is dealing with the heartbreaking loss of the only person who truly knew her, while also being betrayed by her fiancé. Then there’s Elliot, who’s just trying to make it through each day while navigating his own struggles.

Ellie really stuck with me. You get to witness her growth. She learned to trust again, to open herself up, and most importantly, to allow herself to love and be loved.

Her mother and sister were beyond frustrating—Ryan should be ashamed of herself, and Hope… Lord, she needs help.

This was a fantastic read for anyone who’s ever had to put themselves back together again. It’s emotional and full of heart.

I really took my time with this one! Thank you for the ARC!

“New Growth” is a tender, heart-wrenching journey through grief, healing, and rediscovery — a story that quietly wraps itself around you and doesn’t let go.

Elliot “Ellie” Sawyer is navigating a storm of loss, after losing the one person who truly understood her. Just as she's trying to catch her breath, life delivers another blow — a betrayal so personal, it shakes her to her core. Her pain is palpable, raw, and deeply human.

Enter Elliot “El” Greene — and he is simply unforgettable. Steady, compassionate, and emotionally present, El brings a gentle strength that never overshadows Ellie’s process. Even while managing his own inner struggles, he holds space for her in a way that feels safe and unforced.

Ellie’s journey isn’t easy — she makes choices that are frustrating at times, but they’re honest. What kept me rooted was El’s quiet commitment and the grace with which he walks beside her, never pushing, never rushing — just being there. His kind of love is rare, and it shows.

If there’s one thing I wished for, it was a glimpse of Ellie’s growth a bit sooner. But perhaps that’s the beauty of it — real healing takes time, and this story honors that truth with care.

Taahesi crafts something deeply special here. Her writing is vivid and emotionally layered, and her ability to write a male lead who is both strong and soft is remarkable. El isn’t just “the love interest” — he’s a reflection of what it means to show up with intention, even when it’s hard.

This book is more than a romance — it’s a deeply emotional look at what it means to begin again when everything feels broken. It gently reminds us that pain doesn’t disappear overnight, but love — especially the patient kind — can be a guiding light.

If you choose to read this, do so with tenderness. “New Growth” explores heavy themes — grief, addiction, chronic illness, and family trauma — but it does so with empathy and care. And for those ready to sit with it, this story offers something truly meaningful.

Taahesi’s voice is confident and poetic, and though this is only her second book, it reads with the grace of someone who knows exactly what she wants to say. She invites us to feel, to reflect, and maybe even to heal alongside her characters.

Take a breath, open your heart, and let this story unfold. You won’t regret it.

Ms. Williams, Ms. Williams, MISS WILLIAMSSSSSSS GIRLLLLLL …let us take a moment for Elliot^2 because they were everything I needed and more!! 10sss across the BOARD babe!!

Now I’m the first to say I hate a slow burn, but this one was worth every page until they finally got together 🥺 The slow burn was soooo necessary for Ellie; they wouldn’t have worked without it. And they worked soo wellll. Where one was lacking/fell short, the other picked up & supported unconditionally. The way they worked through their relationship had me taking notes OKAYYYYY. The El’s definitely taught me something about leading with love in the rough moments. 🤍

Speaking of Ellie, RYAN AND JONATHAN COME TO THE FRONT FOR THIS ASS WHOOPING. I have never been so ready to crash out behind a fictional character. Ellie is such a sweet soul who keeps getting done wrong. Her mama & Hope can kick rocks too. I’m so happy she had El and Esther in her corner. Somebody had to protect her when literally everyone was begging for a crash out.

And then the other Elliot 🥺 I wouldve loved to see a few more scenes about him/his work, but we only had one POV. I’D GO TO WAR FOR MR SAWYER AND THATS ON MY MAMA. He was so gentle and patient with Ellie, never pushing her limits. To be someone with his own trauma, he was everything Ellie needed to help her heal and move forward. I loved to see his development in this story too, gaining confindence in himself as a man who leads the more he helped Ellie. And the proposalllll 😭🥺 MY HEART

Thank you to Taahesi for gifting me an advanced review copy 🫶🏾

In New Growth Taahesi B. Williams gives readers an insightful look at the process of grief, family dysfunction, and personal renewal. Elliot Sawyer is the linchpin in her family unit, taking care of her ailing father, providing support for her mother and sister, and kowtowing to her dismissive fiancé. When her father passes suddenly, Elliot is bereft and adrift. She is even more devastated when she realizes that her fiancé and sister are engaged in a clandestine relationship. With money from her inheritance (greedily coveted by her mother and sister) Elliot embarks on a journey which carries her to Thailand, but she cannot outrun her personal demons and insecurities. But what Thailand does give her is her vocation as a hairdresser of great skill and two friends (?). Back in the United States and in her own salon, Elliot is greatly in demand but still coping with her pain by self-medicating and hiding from relationships. When another Elliot (Greene) appears in her life, handsome and beautifully supportive, she does what she has learned to do…she pushes him away and wallows in her trauma. Ms. Williams uses the tropes of friends to lovers, slow burn, proximity (I loved their platonic sleepovers), he falls first and mental health issues. Elliot Greene is a dream of a male romantic lead, and his kindness and care were exactly with Elliot needed; he helped her to find her OWN strength. I would have gladly read more of their story.

New Growth is a raw, intimate examination of the pains from loss and recovery. I’m fortunate to have early read this book.

Elliot Sawyer spent years in a cycle of pain and “just getting by.” With a sick father, toxic family, and a unhealthy relationship, Elliot has been on a constant razor edge. Sadly it comes to its hilt after the death of her father. Everything falls apart in a tragic cycle, but midst the rubble remains a mystery for Elliot to solve.

This book teaches you patience in healing by exposing the gruesome realities that we don’t usually speak about. When I say this book exposed pieces of my heart and soul, believe me. Williams does a beautiful job creating a story that balances Elliots journey with love, pain, and the world of navigating them all. It’s a slow burn, a slow journey to find peace but it was such an intimate moment of comfort in the oddest of ways. I truly empathized with these characters, held fury for them, and loved them every step of the way.

Please take a chance and read this amazing story! You won’t regret it for one second. Just be mindful this book tackles heavy themes of grief, addiction, medical conditions, familial trauma and more themes that could be triggering.

I'm going to start off by saying that this was an arc read! Now onto my review:
First of all can we talk about how much of a crybaby I am? I was literally crying from the ending, it was so beautiful and simple, and it added so much closer. I NEED A SECOND BOOK OMG. Ellie's story was so beautiful and I'm so happy that she got a happy ending. This story was beautifully done from start to finish, every character had so much depth, and I love how they all had their own story lines as well. I love how Ellie got the closer that she needed after all that she went through with the man that supported her through it all, Elliot, through the high's, the lows, and the in-betweens he stuck with her. All of the quotes were beautiful and the story flowed so well that everything was fit together perfectly in such a touching way. I'm so glad that I was given the opportunity to read such an incredible story and I can't wait to read more from this author in the future. Thank you, thank you so much for allowing me to read this story, Ellie's story made me feel so seen. I also have so many pages of notes from each chapter, literally so engaged wholeheartedly. I hope that everyone is able to experience this story.

Taahesi knows how to curate a “soft” man - - a man that's gentle, and patient with you, but isn’t scared to spin about you. purr.

Elliot “Ellie” Sawyer is a woman of true strength. She endured time of the most egregious acts of betrayal by someone close to her heart. Taahesi, shows us how grief has no timeline and everyone’s journey is different.

Elliot “El” Greene is a man of true patience and understanding. He allowed Ellie to grow into her own, while being the anchor and steady support she needed while healing.

For this to be Taahesi’s second book - you cannot tell. Her writing is elaborate, expressive, and grammatically sound. She kept me trapped into the story.

New Growth brings us grief and healing that is slow, but necessary. I never knew how much I enjoyed a single POV style book, until a read this.

Now, this is a slow burn. Meaning that it is in fact slow, and that Ellie could not make her mind up until the end of the book. However, I promise the love is worth it.

First of all there’s no reason the prologue had to have me in tears, My God 😭 I instantly put myself in Ellie’s shoes and the tears came falling!! Immediately after i’m pissed now because what did Ellie do for everyone to treat her so badly, I just wanted to give her a long tight hug like she deserves. The story captures so many emotions—grief, anger, sadness, joy, love, hate, etc and for that it creates a great novel! I wish I could read this for the first time again, I didn’t want it to end🥹I really appreciated how after her new journey everyone she met was down for her their first meet (expect that one hater we won’t speak of). Ellie desperately needed that loyalty. As for Elliot their friendship ultimately built a beautiful love story and she might just have to share with me lol

p.s.
you know how it’s always a side character that you love? for me it’s Johanna 😂 baby girl gonna tell EVERY TIME!

THIS IS A MUST READ!!!

Disclaimer: I received a free advance reader copy of this book and am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts.

This book was absolutely amaaaazing, I ate it up in under 24 hours! It felt so real and relatable, the kind of story that lingers with you. Ellie’s character arc was beautifully done, her growth felt natural, not rushed or forced. And El? Whew baby. He had me rubbing my feet together all book.

Even the spice was not just hot, but emotionally charged and deeply intimate. It wasn’t just physical,it added layers to the relationship and made me even more invested. This is my favorite romance read of 2025 so far.

If I had to nitpick, I do wish the epilogue had been in El’s POV. Since it’s a single POV book, getting a glimpse into his head at the end would’ve been the perfect cherry on top. But that’s just me being greedy. lmaooo

overall, i Highly recommended for romance readers who love authentic characters, emotional depth, and heat that hits the heart

Let’s talk books! This week’s read was Between Passion and Revenge by @angelmshaw_writes—and whew, this one delivered.

The chemistry between Shae and Storm? Phenomenal. These two are so alike in their ambition and drive, yet complete opposites in how they carry it. Storm is confident, intelligent, and fiery—he knows exactly who he is. Shae, on the other hand, is just as passionate but still figuring out what she truly wants. Their push-and-pull dynamic is magnetic. They challenge each other, grow together, and are undeniably each other’s match—but making that work romantically? That’s a whole different game.

The emotional intensity had me curling my toes, and the angst? Off the charts.
And can we talk about that plot twist?! I was not prepared—I was riding the wrong train entirely and loved every second of the surprise.

Now I’m on pins and needles waiting for the next part. I have questions… and I need answers.

New Growth was a slow burn that follows Elliot on a path to healing after dealing with grief and betrayal and how she comes out on the other side. A lesson, well reminder I got from this book is to never put yourself before others because when it all goes away, what are you gonna be left with? This book takes its time, guiding you through a soft, intimate fight for peace. I felt everything right alongside the characters, their rage, their hope, and the love that was happening each step.

I really loved the MMC Elliot and was really rooting for her the entire time between her family was trifling and the hand she was dealt was horrible but she didn’t let it get to her she made her own path and did what was best for her!The side character were so freaking infuriating omg! I almost DNF because they were so irritating!

Overall, with the story being as slow as it was it wrapped up nicely and I enjoyed it.

“New Growth” is by far the best romance novel I’ve read in a while! It beautifully captures the full spectrum of emotions—grief, sadness, joy, anger, and everything in between. I haven’t fallen in love with characters the way I did with El and Ellie in a long time. They each stole my heart individually, but together? I completely melted. They’re the power couple dynamic I didn’t know I needed. Honestly I feel like El when he expressed he didn’t know how he survived without Ellie, I don’t know how I survived before reading this book lol.

If you’re searching for a second-chance at romance that will pull every emotion known to man out of you, this is it. A solid 100/10 from me. It’s well-written, emotionally rich, and filled with beautiful quotes that really stick with you. There aren’t enough stars and sufficient words to describe how much I loved this book. It was perfect!!!

Taahesi, you’ve truly outdone yourself. I can’t wait to see what you create next.

I really enjoyed this ARC! A signature in her books is MMCs who are obsessed with their women, and that held true here—El was completely devoted to Ellie. I loved how grief was woven into the story, especially using the stages of hair to reflect Ellie’s emotional growth—chef’s kiss. The first half moved quickly after her father’s passing, then jumped two months, then two years, with the rest leading up to the expo. The time jumps felt a bit uneven, especially given how fast the relationship deepened in just two to five months. I also struggled a little wit the lack of resolution with certain characters. Ellie’s silence toward Jonathan and Ryan felt a bit drawn out and I expected her to address Hope’s antics much sooner. Selfishly, I can admit I wanted her to confront them earlier than she did so I could jump in and cuss them out for her 😂

Final rating: 4.5

I felt alot of emotions reading this book. I was so angry and sad for the FMC. I had to put the book down a few hours to get my mental right to dive back in because the beginning started with a bang of pain and betrayal that hurt my heart so much. I’d say the author did a good job because i felt the emotions as if i was the FMC. The story was good, it was a slow burn when it came to the relationship between the FMC and MMC tho and I’m not a slow burn kinda girly but it was well worth it in the end still. I really loved the MMC, male Elliot was loyal, loving, caring and sooooooo patient, I just wanted female Elliot to get it together and love that man back. There were a few grammatical mistakes thru the book but besides that the story was well written and i enjoyed it very much.

Man words can’t really describe the emotions I felt while reading this book. The emotional journey that I went on while reading this book has been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling I have ever gotten from reading a romance book. I fell in love with the characters and my heart broke for them as they encountered different tragedies. I also think that diabetes was represented really well in this book. As a diabetic it made me happy to see a story that highlighted the highs and lows of diabetes so well and also did a good job involving it in the romance aspect.I don’t think I will ever forget this book, the love story was so beautiful and taught me some important lessons. I almost cried and crashed out quite a few times as well. All in all I loved reading this book and I highly recommend everyone check it out.

Oh my goodness, I haven’t felt this warm in the heart after reading in quite some time. I truly loved this book. I discovered it in a TikTok, and I have since been captivated.

1. In the beginning, I was a little concerned this entire thing was going to give Tyler Perry in a black women never win kind of way. I’m so glad I pushed through for the beautiful part.

2. Ellie is such a real character. That oldest daughter trauma she holds on to had me wanting to hug her with each obstacle she overcame. I was so proud of her by the end.

3. El, oh El. *wistful sigh* 🥹 I won’t give any more away, just know I have so many lines highlighted. I can’t wait to get my paperback copy so I can highlight my swoons. That is a perfect book boyfriend.

Anywho, go read this book. I’m going to reread again soon just to feel again. 10 out of 10!

I really enjoyed this author’s writing style. It was heartfelt and full of emotion. It was really beautifully written and there were so many moments that made me stop and think.

That said, the pacing was just too slow for me. I found myself wanting the story to move forward faster. But even with the slower pace, what truly carried the book was the relationship between Elliot and Elliott. His love for her was patient, deep, and absolutely beautiful to read. Their connection felt real and tender the kind of love that lingers long after you close the book. I really wish this type of love for every relationship.

Overall, New Growth is a beautifully written story with strong emotional depth. If you enjoy character driven stories and slow burn relationships (like really slow), this one is worth picking up.

Of note, I hated her sister and mother.

I read "New Growth" as an ARC reader and I absolutely enjoyed it. First and foremost, I love how the two main characters are both named Elliott. I think that's just the cutest thing and sets the tone for the story. I saw a lot of myself in the FMC, from her struggles to how heavy she felt her emotions, which made me love her but also made me very upset at times. Seeing her explore her own cycle of grief and to allow the MMC opportunity to love her and give her what she's been missing. As far as the MMC El goes? 10/10 HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Taahesi knows how to write an outstanding MMC, someone who's soft, gentle, and knows how to love good and properly.

I'm ready for the release so this can be on my shelves. I enjoyed it.

Refreshing

I'm usually a diehard urban fiction reader, so this was a breath of fresh air. I loved how Elliott (Male) knew exactly what he wanted, and was willing to wait for Elliott (Female) to get comfortable and come to terms with their relationship.
Elliott (F) made this such a stressful read tho! Lol. I was screaming at her to "Get a backbone" and "Get some counseling" the majority of the time I was reading. I do wish her issues with her ex was more talked about "on screen" it seems like it definitely was more to their story than "triggering touches" . Overall a very good read.. Can't wait to read more from this Author

A BEAUTIFUL, GROWN, LOVE STORY

This book gave me everything I needed from a romance novel. It was so frustrating, yet wonderful to witness Ellie's journey from heartbreak, betrayal, and being unsure of herself to being loved fully, patiently, unselfishly, and genuinely. It was so wonderful to witness her build her confidence and shed all of the toxicity out of her life. Whew and El! El was everything. He was everything from the very beginning. Very patient and intentional. I swooned more times than I can remember. I am definitely planning on revisiting this book... and I already can't wait!

Spoke to me

New Growth spoke to me. I almost didn’t read it because of the trigger warnings, especially those around grief. It’s been almost two years since my mom passed away unexpectedly followed by my dad a little over a year later. Ellie said things in her grief I wished I had had the courage to say after my mom’s death. She did the things I would have wanted to do if money gad been no object. I cheered, I fussed, I cried, and most of all, I laughed throughout all of Ellie’s challenges and accomplishments. New Growth shows us all how we can come into our own when we are lived and when we love ourselves.

Book was a slow burn, but the plot and storyline was so well written that the book kept you entertained. The author was very passionate about the characters which were well developed and left the reader feeling the emotions of each character.

Throughout the book there were overly sensitive topics that will draw the reader in. I read this book as an ARC, and this is a new to me author, whom I am looking forward to reading more of her work. New Growth is a beautifully written love story, an excellent and riveting read that does not disappoint, not to mention that the cover is stunning.
