H2Zero #1

H2Zero: Part One

Rate this book
In the 21st century, the human race is on the brink of extinction. An event known as the Black Incident has reshaped the world as we know it.
Civilisation has fallen into absolute chaos. Food is heavily rationed. Clean water is now more valuable than diamonds.

After the fall of the British government, the military now control what remains of the population in quarantine zones. When orders fail, bullets fly. If you try to leave, you're enslaved.
Outside the quarantine zones you're confronted with bandits, psychotic cults and ... those ... things.

H2Zero is a wake-up call to humanity. We may not yet realise it, but extinction is closer than we think.
Each book in the series is set in a different time to explore the events that have unfolded and each book will follow the footsteps of a different person as they struggle to survive in this new world.

H2Zero: Part One is a prequel which introduces the reader to the unique world through the eyes of the author.

"The main element crucial for the survival of life is also a demon in disguise; it will snatch your life away as quickly as you were given it. There’s no god, it’s the elements that control this world and everything on it."

About the author

Scott A. Butler

Scott A. Butler is a hard of hearing and AuDHD multi-genre author who proves that a carbon-based life-form can run almost entirely on tea and quietly brilliant ideas. (Mostly tea, though.)

Scott’s unique journey into storytelling began after losing his hearing as a child. This led to a very active imagination and, let's be honest, a dash of social awkwardness. To avoid having his sanity constantly questioned, he decided to stop sharing his imaginative worlds out loud. Instead, upon discovering an old typewriter at his grandparents' house, he put it all down on paper. He found the simple truth that writing about made-up people is significantly less complicated than trying to talk to real ones.

When he’s not busy constructing alternate universes or being productively awkward, you can usually find Scott engaged in one of his other serious pursuits: being a servant to various household animals, filling his brain with an alarming quantity of useless Doctor Who facts, perfecting the art of tea and cake consumption, or quietly pretending not to be jealous of other authors' success.

H2Zero: Part One is Scott A. Butler's best work to date.

The Black Incident has resulted in the human race being confined to quarantine zones. Clean water is extremely difficult to come by and everyone is suffering from extreme dehydration. The only option you have is to wait for your ration allowances to be delivered by the military. (Only there are rumours that the military are keeping rations for themselves..)

In Part One we meet Shaun. He is in a quarantine zone in Portsmouth. Nobody can try to leave the island or they'll be arrested and anyone who tries to join them is shot. He, like the other residents, is so dehydrated that the main thoughts running through his head are about drinking clean, pure water. And dehydration can be a strong enough force to drive anyone to desperation.

H2Zero is a really great dystopian story. Set in the United Kingdom makes it a nice change from the American settings so familiar to dystopian fiction. I was invested in both the plot and Shaun as a character from the beginning. I can't wait for the other parts in this series to learn more about this dystopian world.

I really enjoyed this instalment! The environment and characters were all very realistic. I felt as though I was thrown right into the world, and understood life there quite quickly. The author did an amazing job making me feel as though I was part of the things going on. I could feel the way the characters did through the descriptive imagery without any effort on my part. I felt as though the length of the story did not detract from the quality. It was short, but I felt fulfilled by the background information as well as being given a good sense of what there could be to come. All around great work, I can't wait to read more.

Thank you to the author for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

What can I say, I NEED MORE ASAP. And it doesn't help that there are no other published parts for this series!!! Why is the author doing this to me!

To summarize, (and I'm trying to not give any spoilers considering this part is 30 pages long) the book is about a dystopian world where a virus has spread through the oceans, making people sick and "zombie" like. To make matters worse, the military has stepped in inside Britain to stop people from consuming any water. Dehydration is on the rise, clean H2O is more precious than diamonds and people are dying by the masses.
Set inside an island in Britain, the story follows a man living in a suburb under military control. He hasn't seen his wife and daughter since his island declared separation from the rest of the world (due to the continuing risk of getting the virus), he is severely depressed and of course, dehydrated as hell. Will he survive? Will the WHO find a cure to this epidemic? Will he ever see his family again? Read on to find out
The book is part 1 in a series. The author hasn't commented on how many parts there will be nor WHEN is the next part coming out but if the story has made me curious enough to pine for the next part, you better believe it's good.
