A steamy, grumpy/sunshine billionaire romance from Amazon Top 50 bestselling author Jaine Diamond.
When billionaire Harlan Vance blackmails me into being his fake date, I know I’m in trouble.

It's been a while since I one sit read something, let alone one more chaptered my way through the epilogue at 1am, but here I am with Jaine's latest. This book had me so hooked from beginning to end (quite literally, I didn't even stop for a bathroom break), I absolutely adored these two and their story.
The whole premise of this series has been so much fun honestly, I mean who doesn't love a billionaire granddad marionetting his grandkids from beyond the grave? Ol' Stoddy would have laughed his tush off with Harlan's quest too. I loved the Darla twist too, absolute miscommunication perfection.
The spice was phenomenal. I think this was my favorite keenk list from Jaine yet, the kitty slaps, praise and o denial were just so, so good, especially from our cold, "Beast"ly Harlan and Quinn was made for him. I just loved them so dang much.
We get quite the setup into Samantha's book too and I can not wait to hear her story next.
Darling Obsession delivers everything I crave in a steamy billionaire romance and more—Jaine Diamond once again proves why she’s a top name in the genre. This grumpy/sunshine, boss-employee, fake dating story is a slow-burn rollercoaster of heat, tension, secrets, and obsession.
Harlan Vance is the quintessential alphahole billionaire: icy, brooding, and utterly untouchable—until Quinn. From the moment he blackmails her into being his fake date, the chemistry is instant and electric. Quinn’s his complete opposite—sunny, bold, and just stubborn enough to challenge him—and watching their dynamic shift from cold professionalism to sizzling intimacy is utterly addictive.
The “he hates everyone but her” trope is done to perfection. Every glance, every possessive moment, every protective gesture had me hooked. But this isn’t just a steamy romance—it’s laced with emotional depth, surprising vulnerability, and a mystery that unfolds in delicious layers. The secrets Harlan keeps? They’re devastating and captivating.
What I loved most was how Diamond balances heat with heart. While the spice is off the charts, there’s also a deeply satisfying emotional payoff. Quinn never loses her voice or strength, even as Harlan’s obsession deepens. And that ending? Perfection!!
If you love possessive heroes, high-stakes office tension, and sizzling grumpy/sunshine pairings, Darling Obsession is your next must-read.
Tropes: Billionaire, grumpy/sunshine, obsessed hero, alphahole boss, fake dating, family secrets, standalone Spice Level: Scorching Final Verdict: Utterly addictive. Harlan Vance is the new king of obsessive love.l
what is about no personality men being beloved in romance books
There’s nothing and I mean NOTHING likable about Harlan. I’m not even talking about his ocd. I’m talking about inability to have a SINGLE conversation without lying or his sheer lack of empathy or just regard for ANYONE but ESPECIALLY Quinn. He blackmails her with nothing just simply tells her to be his fake date and she’s just like a damn Pavlovian dog doing what he says, he promises her she will keep her job fails he fires her buys her bosses bakery fail he fires her, his SISTER gets her a job fail it’s in a sex club. He doesn’t give a shit that he’s ruining her life he just wants to fuck her all the while he says the most rude shit about her to himself!!! Doesn’t even ACT like he likes her or like he even wants to be in her presence but with ALL that QUINNS falling deeper for him!!! Like the bar is in book HELL!!! How do so many writers come up with the SANE CHARACTERS TIME AND TIME AGAIN that are so poorly written and poorly executed as main characters as the LOVE INTEREST!! What is the Fantasy? It’s giving low self esteem and it’s not ROMANTIC or glamorous even thought he’s “a billionaire”! Like ugh that can’t be the fantasy only!!! It’s giving lack of writing skills and I hope writers do better.
Darling Obsession is another phenomenal installment in this author’s Bayshore Billionaires series. I finished this book in nearly one sitting as I was that enthralled with Harlan’s and Quinn’s story. It all starts with a lie and a fake date that leads to piping hot chemistry and an obsession. Not to mention, unfathomable secrets.
Harlan Vance is an elusive billionaire. Not much is known about this particular Vance brother, but on the surface he appears to be surly and unyielding. He craves ultimate control in all matters of his life and displays obsessive tendencies. It is no wonder that as sparks fly with Quinn, he is left trying to navigate the chaos that ensues. To say that I love Harlan’s character is an understatement! Quinn is a breath of fresh air! A baker at heart and a loving daughter, she is an admirable and relatable heroine. It is no wonder that Harlan is drawn to this turquoise-haired beauty.
As one often sees with fake dating romances, there is the undeniable attraction between them, but there is also a connection of hearts. I really enjoyed reading how their relationship unfolded and was eager to see just how they would achieve their HEA. Words verses actions are at times in conflict with each other and secrets are yet to be revealed. It all started with a lie. Can Quinn believe and trust in Harlan when it comes to important matters of the heart? Will Harlan embrace just how deep his obsession goes?
This author crafts a tantalizing and engaging story that has a unique take on the fake relationship trope. The book moves at a good pace and the characters are remarkably well developed. I enjoy this novel from beginning to end and Darling Obsession is a must read for those who love billionaire romances.
I was gifted an early version of this manuscript. I voluntarily leave this honest review where all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
I thoroughly savored every word and chapter of Darling Obsession, a standalone in Jaine Diamond's connected Bayshore Billionaires series. I went a little crazy, highlighting line after line- a sign of an exceptional book to me. She nailed this one and these characters really touched my heart.
With one down and four to go, the Vance siblings inheritance challenge spotlight is now on Harlan- exactly where he does not love to be. He goes to considerable lengths to protect his privacy....and his secrets. This ultra-reclusive alphahole boss was mysterious and intriguing, but also gorgeous and grumpy. Harlan Vance is my kind of irresistibly broken man.
His emotions and inner thoughts are guarded and locked down tight. He's distant and doesn't like people, and if his family thinks he's different, he is. Always the black sheep. Would anyone be able to crack Harlan's complicated code and melt his icy shell?
Enter Quinn Monroe. A cocktail waitress who dreams of owning a bakery. With her turquoise hair and upbeat, sunny personality, she is a breath of fresh air. She wings her way through life in messy, creative chaos while Harlan needs order, peace and absolute control. When his wolfish obsession with this free spirited employee becomes part of a bigger plan, Harlan turns to blackmail and a one night fake dating situation that never seems to end. Opposite and unlikely though they may be- she somehow 'gets' him like no one ever has before.
Harlan and Quinn's intense, steamy chemistry hooked me in right away- it was hard to turn them off when the book wasn't in my hand. Was I shamelessly smitten with these two? Yes I was. Harlan's obsession with Quinn may have started with a lie, but I thought they were meant to be soulmates from their very first meeting.
Their journey together was intense, sweet, quirky and beautiful. Complicated, with doubts, risks, rewards and growth, all leading to one of the most deeply satisfying romances and hard won happily ever afters I've read in a long time...for reasons I'll leave you to discover on your own.
Jaine Diamond took one of her most layered and uniquely flawed characters and molded him into someone who's story brought tears to my eyes one minute, and made me want to hug him the next. Keep the tissues nearby, Harlan Vance is one memorable and enigmatic guy.
Jaine Diamond's books are the kind of treat I can't wait to devour, with the best escapes from reality built in- and I loved escaping with Harlan and Quinn. There was a major, juicy hint about which Vance sibling will be challenged next at the very end of this book! Now I'll to TRY to wait patiently for it, if that's at all possible!
* I received an early copy to read and review. These are my honest and freely given thoughts after enjoying Darling Obsession.
Do you like your book boyfriend obsessive, stalkerish and weird ? Because I do and Darling Obsession has one of them and it was so good to read Harlan's story ! Adding one of my favorite trope : fake dating, and I really enjoyed the story. The fake dating thing is one of the funniest lie, the spicy scenes are very good and the writing is perfect.
Darling Obsession is another entertaining, sexy ride in Jaine Diamond’s deliciously interconnected world. One of the things I always love about her books is the way past characters show up and the whole universe continues to build—if you’re a fan of her earlier work, you’ll feel right at home here.
That said, this book also works perfectly as a standalone! Even if you haven’t read all of Jaine’s other books, you can dive right into the Bay Shore Billionaires series with this one and still feel fully immersed.
This time around, we follow Quinn and Harlan’s story, which starts with that dark, brooding “beast in the castle” energy—but quickly turns into something a little more cinnamon roll than monster. I was expecting something a bit darker from Harlan, but I didn’t mind the softer center. Quinn was actually the surprise for me—she grew so much, developed a strong backbone, and became a heroine I really rooted for.
And let’s talk about the heat: 🌶️🌶️🌶️. The steamy scenes were on point—I might never look at buttercream the same way again. (Honestly, I’m half-tempted to take up baking.)
Fair warning: this one ends with a major cliffhanger, and I’m already counting down the days until the next Bay Shore Billionaires book drops. Bring it on, Jaine!
This was my first book by this author, and I've been excited to dive into their work for a while. I have to say, I enjoyed it! The chemistry between the main characters is sizzling, and the spicy scenes? Wow, they are off-the-charts hot!
Harlan is the black sheep of his family. He’s grumpy, a bit closed off, and has his secrets, even from his siblings. After their granddad passed away, he left challenges for each of them to complete, and now it's Harlan's turn. Enter Quinn, a waitress at one of Harlan's family businesses. He practically blackmails her into being his fake date, thinking it’ll be a one-time deal. But he doesn't realize just how obsessed he's about to become with her!
Quinn is such a strong, independent, and resilient character. She works multiple jobs to support her mom, who's unwell, while also chasing her dream of owning her own bakery one day. I loved her bright, sunny personality, and how she stood her ground with Harlan. She’s always honest about what she wants and deserves! Harlan initially tries to keep things physical with Quinn, avoiding any emotional connection, but he's fighting a losing battle. He can't help but think about her and wants to know what she’s up to all the time. It was heartwarming to see him want to be better for her and how he starts to connect with her mom too.
Watching Harlan and Quinn’s relationship develop was such a joy. It’s beautiful to see Harlan slowly open up to both Quinn and his siblings. I also loved the dynamic between the Vance siblings, and I can’t wait to read their stories next!
This is book 2 in the Bayshore Billionaires series, but it can be read as a standalone. I do recommend book 1 as well.
This was a great read, I couldn't put it down, and I am excited for the rest of the series. Each book is a sibling, and they each have a task to complete to keep their inheritance. Their grandfather made it a stipulation, but the task were done by another sibling anonymously.
Harlan and Quinn were great. I loved their chemistry and dynamic. Harlan definitely wanted to keep things surface level. At some points, I had a love-hate relationship with Harlan, but overall, I loved him. I felt so bad for him at times and just wanted to give him a hug. Quinn saw the true Harlan and was not a pushover when he was demanding and grumpy. Great story and spice.
✔ Billionaire ✔ Obsessed Hero ✔ Alphahole Boss ✔ Grumpy/Sunshine ✔ He Hates Everyone But Her ✔ Secrets and Lies ✔ Family Saga / Black Sheep
Thank you, Jaine Diamond and Valentine's PR, for the ARC.
Jaine has done it again with Book 2 of the Vance family. Harlan is a strict grump with secrets. Quinn becomes his obsession that everyone thinks is his long-lasting lover Darla. Quinn is the opposite of Harlan but together they make a great couple. It takes a few twists and turns for them to find their true feelings. Lots of intrigue, sexiness and plots to keep you turning the pages to find out what comes next. Cant wait for the 3rd book. Awesome book Jaine.
Okay but WHY did Harlan Vance fully knock me sideways?!? I went in expecting cold, ruthless alphahole and somehow ended up swooning over this obsessive, quietly soft, emotionally stunted billionaire with a secret soft spot for a stray cat.
And Quinn… she’s sunshine in human form. Selfless, warm, determined—and she handles Harlan’s broody, controlling ways with grace and just enough fire to keep him in check. I loved how she saw him. Not the CEO mask, but the messy, grieving, guarded man underneath.
Also, can we talk about how Jaine Diamond writes characters with so much depth?? I felt like I knew them. I was rooting for them, crying for them, yelling at my Kindle when things got tense (because boy did they), and fully swooning at the ending.
This book gave me everything: banter, heartbreak, spice that had me fanning myself, and emotional payoff that felt so deserved. 10/10 would read again.
Darling Obsession by Jaine Diamond. Bayshore Billionaires series, book 2. Dual POV. A secret family challenge that turned into a fake date becomes forever love for the baker and her billionaire. I enjoyed this contemporary romance and can't wait for the next three siblings' stories.
Location: Vancouver, Canada
Fraternal twin Harlan Vance (33, 34; aka Mr Black/the beast) is up next in his grandfather's final game with his grandchildren. Each of the five Vance grandchildren must complete a challenge within one year of their grandfather's death to earn their inheritance and secure their role in Vance Industries. Harlan's challenge is unexpected, and one he isn't certain he can ever accomplish. Allison Quinn Monroe (31; aka Quinn/Dominique) is struggling to make ends meet and keep her bakery dream alive. She's working as a cocktail waitress at the Velvet Lounge atop Vance Tower when she feels Harlan's eyes on her. As unsettling as his stare is she's not certain if it's unwelcome; after all, she just learned some devastating news about her boyfriend.
The Vance siblings are learning to cope and find their footing after the loss of the head of their family and company. Quinn is fighting for her family's survival. If Harlan can get out of his own way, he'll see Quinn is his perfect match. Guaranteed HEA.
Thank you, Jaine Diamond and Valentine PR, for the eARC. JP
Rating: 💗💗💗.5 Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Tropes: billionaire romance / he hates everyone but her / instant attraction / family secrets / he's the black sheep of his family / he's obsessed / grumpy x sunshine / opposites attract / "just this once" / he stalks her
I'm saddened to say it, but this one disappointed me. It's partly my own subjective views and high expectations (as I've been waiting for this book for roughly 12 months), but to wait a year to release this felt like complete overkill.
This story was incredibly underwhelming. I may have forgiven various aspects had this been Jaine's 3rd or 4th release in the past 12 months, because then I could at least attribute the multiple plot holes, inconsistencies and the general underwhelming nature of the story to her rushing it. But for the product she produced in 12 months, it simply wasn't good enough for me.
The premise is good and the tropes listed are some of my favorite. Unfortunately, it's the execution of them together that let me down. Other than the Vance family, the entire thing felt entirely forgettable. Her writing remains excellent, and this isn't bad by any means, but it's not good either. It's not one I'd necessarily say I enjoyed reading. It was okay and I was mostly happy to be done with it. Overall, it is just what I rated it: average.
In short, this series follows the billionaire Vance family who's meddling grandfather passed away. As a way to keep their inheritance, dear ol' grandad Stoddy requires each sibling to complete a task picked by another sibling. In the case of Harlan, he must introduce the family to the mysterious Darla, and in the process of trying to complete this task, he meets Quinn with whom he's instantly enamoured.
First and foremost, my biggest issue here is the fact that the entire story was based on a number of major and significant plot holes that made no real sense when you're breaking it down. []
Secondly, I didn't like the MCs, together or individually. Harlan was meant to come across as a dark and tortured "black sheep of the family" type of billionaire - which is usually my FAVORITE type of hero - but, instead, except for the very end, he came across as a bit of an asshole. He had his swoony moments, but overall, I wouldn't even add him to a book boyfriend category. I understand he has his traumas, but the guy has been through extensive therapy, and you expect me to believe this is how he still comes across? It was inconsistent. Quinn, however, was the doormat I absolutely hate to read about. I remain insistent that we need trigger warnings for doormat heroines. The dude literally keeps telling her, REPEATEDLY, that they're never going to see each other and them sleeping together is a one time thing and yet she continues to beg for more? This is entirely subjective, but I like my heroines with a spine and hard to get. Quinn, sadly, came across as very needy, desperate and lacking self-respect. Together, I also thought that their chemistry felt very forced and I couldn't understand the pull between these two. Their relationship genuinely made little sense to me and at no stage was I remotely invested in its growth.
I normally LOVE Jaine's men, but more importantly, the way she writes her women. They often come across as relatable and show so much growth and development. Here, however, I was disappointed. Also, it pissed me off to no end that Harlan let Quinn use his kitchen and on her first day "on the job", she invites her friends to hang out with her at his pool, IN HIS PRIVATE HOME, without even informing him about it? Who the f*ck does that?
As for the story, it was just incredibly underwhelming and the plot was weak. It took me over 30% to actually get interested in the story and at no point was I actually invested in these characters or their relationship. It wasn't even overly long, but it felt as though it dragged because the storytelling felt forced. Also, I didn't care for the miscommunication at the end with respect to the conflict.
Finally, the spice didn't do it for me. Jaine writes some of my FAVORITE spice. It's normally so sexy. However, it absolutely did nothing for me here and I actually cringed in multiple places.
Overall, this one was a miss for me. I absolutely LOVE Jaine's books and I'll continue recommending her other works, but this isn't one I necessarily enjoyed, and that's okay. It won't prevent me from reading the next one in the series, but so far, it's my least favourite book of hers. So, if you're like me - a Jaine Diamond stan wanting to read this - I'd go in with adjusted expectations.
Darling Obsession by Jaine Diamond is the second instalment with a unique take on the fake dating trope. This follows Harlan and Quinn as they navigate their way through the intricacies of 'dating'.
When I say, I was not prepared for Harlan, I absolutely was not prepared for Harlan and his mouth. Boy that man can make a girl blush!
When the reader is first introduced to Harlan, the first thing that you notice is his is OCD. He's a little quirky, he likes order, he likes control. He's the reclusive one of his siblings. He's very private about his life. You can tell he is different in the way he thinks and his mannerisms. As the story progresses, we soon come to learn that Harlan has many layers and he is an incredibly complex character. Jaine has done an exceptional job with his character.
Quinn was the complete opposite of Harlan. At times, I forgot how old she was, with some of the things she said or did. I loved that she was a baker and cake decorator because that is also something I do, so I was able to relate to her.
This was an entertaining read. Quinn's ability to get under Harlan's skin was quite amusing. Her view on life, despite everything her and her mom have been through was something Harlan was in awe of. He is wired differently to everyone else and I really found him quite interesting the more I go to know him.
Jaine's ability to create well-developed characters that have depth provides the reader with an engaging story and well-paced narrative. The relationships Quinn had with her girlfriends felt genuine and authentic and I really loved that she had them for support when she needed it the most.
Quinn and Harlan had chemistry that was palpable. Their spicy scenes were so well-written, and descriptive enough to make you blush! The way Harlan took control was quite enjoyable! I also loved the way they began to communicate with one another.
One of the standouts of the story was Harlans character growth. His willingness to learn what Quinn needed was endearing and the compromises they each were willing to make in order to live cohesively showed their seriousness to their relationship
Overall, this was a great read. I'm a huge fan of Jaine Diamond, I love her work, so I'm pleased I got a chance to continue this series. Readers who enjoy Billionaire, fake dating tropes will thoroughly enjoy Darling Obsession
Kindle Unlimited: Yes Stand-alone: YES** Author: Jaine Diamond Rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️ Spiciness Rating: 3.5/5 🌶 POV: First Person Dual Perspective Main Couple: Harlan and Quinn Trope(s): Billionaire, Grumpy/Sunshine, Fake Date
“But, tonight…” He teases me with a couple of shallow thrusts. “You’re going to do exactly as I say.” When I just gargle helplessly in response, he prompts, “Aren’t you?” Whatever this game is he’s playing, I’m loving it. I have never in my life had a man take control like this in bed. Taunt me. Punish me with pleasure. What the hell have I been missing?
This is my first read by Jaine. And, I couldn’t be more obsessed with Harlan and Quinn. This read had me hooked. And, when the heat got turnt up *fans self* - Harlan isn’t just bossy in his work life, wink wink. I think the Vance siblings are going to be added to my TBR like yesterday. Low angst, witty banter, a girl gang, obsession beyond measure wrap around this book like a boa. Harlan needs a hug in the worst way and Quinn is just the woman for the job. Harlan Vance and his siblings must complete challenges proposed by one another to fully gain access to their inheritance. Despite being a twin, Harlan is very much a loner. He values his privacy over all else. And, now he is being forced to go along with his grandad’s plan.
Quinn Monroe has dreams of owning a bakery, but until she can she works in one, has a side business with her mom, and waitresses at night. Her mother raised her alone when her father died and now it is her turn to take care of her mom.
Then her boss's brother casually blackmails her. Harlan needs a date and for her to pretend to be someone else. Then they never have to see eachother again.
Easy peasy, right? Wrong. Now she finds herself out of not only her waitressing job, but her bakery one too. All because she pretended to be someone Harlan dated. All for him to fulfill his challenge. And, for him to keep his life private from even his family.
So, that thing about never seeing one another flies out the window time and time again because obsession runs on both sides.
I really enjoy this author’s writing. She always manages to give us wonderful character with a lot of depth and layers. This one is no different. Harlan and Quinn had my heart from the start- I needed to know more and see how their relationship would progress.
It’s Harlan turn to complete his ‘challenge’ that the Vance siblings were left with as part of their grandfather’s will. He's seen as the black sheep of family-closed off, stoic and with extremely high walls. He has distanced himself from his siblings and anyone else as he doesn’t trust easy and is keeping so many secrets and struggles. Quinn has a lot on her plate, she is hardworking, has a huge heart and big dreams. She is the sunshine to Harlan’s black cloud. As one of her bosses, he approaches Quinn with a job offer, that he won’t let her refuse, and everything unfolds from there!
These two couldn’t be more opposite in personality but work perfectly together. I honestly ate up all their interactions. Their love story definitely has its complications, but it was an absolutely beautiful journey. I loved the way Harlan’s character surprised me at every turn and was so proud of him by the end. That man was beyond protective and obsessed with Quinn is his own way-he just needed some help and support. I loved that Quinn was that person for him, and she learned to accept help along the way.
I was absolutely here for all the steamy moments between these two. Their attraction and chemistry was so high, and the spice hit so well. Although they said it would only physical-their connection was too strong. Watching them navigate changing feelings and hurtles along the way was wonderful.
This book was quite the fun ride, with a touch of emotion and a swoony MMC who isn’t afraid to ‘stalk’ the girl to show he cares.
I can’t wait to see what is up next for the rest of the Vance siblings, especially after the set up at the end.
4.75⭐️

🌟 ARC REVIEW 🌟 Darling Obsession Book 2: Bayshore Billionaires By Jaine Diamond
📚 Holy wow! This book was one of my most anticipated reads for 2025, and it did NOT disappoint! ✨
This series follows five siblings who must complete wild and personal challenges set by each other in order to gain their inheritance—and it's such a fun, unique, and intriguing concept. I absolutely LOVE it! 💖📖
This book focuses on Harlin Vance—the dark-souled black sheep of the family, the one who guards his secrets tightly, even from his siblings. 🌑💔
Harlin is given his task… and has no idea how to complete it. So what does he do? He ends up blackmailing one of his employees to be his fake date 😱 and introduces Quinn to his family. Obviously, he becomes more and more obsessed with her (hence the title!), and they heal each other in ways I didn’t see coming. 💫
Their chemistry is electric, their story is full of emotion, and they’re just so well-suited for one another. I really enjoyed watching their connection unfold and I can’t wait to hear more about them in the future books! 🥹💞
💥 This book ends on a HUGE CLIFFHANGER and I am SOOOOO excited for the next one already! 🫣📚
I’ve read Jaine’s entire backlog and kept up with every release—her writing never misses. Her stories are gripping, emotional, and addictive. The way she builds her characters and plots is next-level. If you’re a romance lover, her books are the way to go! 💕✨
I originally fell in love with the Dirty series and have been following her journey into the Bayshore Billionaires world. I also love how characters from previous books pop in and how everything is subtly interconnected—it feels like a little romance universe. 🪐📖
✨ Tropes You’ll Love: ✔ Billionaire 💰 ✔ Obsessed Hero 😍 ✔ Alphahole Boss 👔 ✔ Grumpy/Sunshine ☁️🌞 ✔ He Hates Everyone But Her 💘 ✔ Secrets and Lies 🤫 ✔ Family Saga / Black Sheep 🐑 ✔ Can Be Read as a Standalone 📚
If any of these tropes make your heart race—grab this book ASAP! You won’t regret it. 😍💥
Book 2 in Jaine Diamond’s Bayshore Billionaires series. While technically this is an interconnected standalone, I would definitely recommend reading book 1 first. Our Bayshore Billionaires, the Vance siblings. Grayson, Damien, Harlen, Savannah and Jamison. Our premise, their deceased grandfather, ever the game master, devised a challenge for each of the siblings. A challenge to test what they’re made of and push them to be better. The prize is their inheritance and part ownership in the family business. Challenge #2 Harlen - “INTRODUCE US TO DARLA”
Darling Obsession focuses on Harlen and Quinn. Billionaire romance, fake dating, obsessive hero, cat dad, grumpy/sunshine, he hates everyone but her, opposites attract, secrets and lies.
Harlen, is our recluse billionaire. He is emotionally closed off from his family. He has a type of OCD and needs control in all aspects of his life. And right now he needs someone to play “Darla” and to introduce her to his family. Quinn is sunshine, friendliness and chaos. She is working up the nerve to dump her cheating boyfriend/ boss. She is working multiple jobs while dreaming of opening a bakery with her mom. But unlike Harlen, she is surrounded by friends who love and support her. Their story begins with blackmail and lies. Who better to play fake girlfriend for one night, then an employee that you blackmail in to it. What could go wrong?
Harlen grows so much throughout this book. He is locked up so tight at the beginning. His only friend is a stray cat. But he’s drawn to Quinn right away. Intrigued fast becomes protective and then obsessive in the best stalker ‘ish’ way. Loved watching him try to do better for her. Quinn was living day to day, meeting Harlen lights her up. Their chemistry is fire once it’s lit. These two opposites definitely attract. They have a bumpy road to their happily ever after but I loved it and couldn’t put it down.
Jaine D always leaves me wanting more and I can’t wait for next story in this series
p.s. (I guessed the Darla twist, don’t worry I’m not going to spoil it.)
Darling Obsession is another addictive entry in the Bayshore Billionaires series, built around one of my favourite ongoing premises: a high-stakes inheritance challenge dreamed up by a mischievous grandfather from beyond the grave. This time, the spotlight is on Harlan Vance—the reclusive “black sheep” of the family—and Quinn, who finds herself drawn into his orbit after one fake date turns into something much more complicated.
I expected a darker hero in Harlan, nicknamed “the beast” by his siblings, but what I found was a man shaped by two forms of OCD, portrayed with care and depth. It’s his difficulty navigating social relationships—rather than any cruelty—that isolates him. He’s obsessive, yes, with overprotective and stalker-ish tendencies, but also quietly sweet. His secret affection for a stray neighbourhood cat adds a surprisingly tender layer.
Quinn is total sunshine—capable, self-sufficient, and genuinely lovely. Her warmth is the perfect foil to Harlan’s intensity, and their chemistry *sizzles*. The spice is high and deliciously varied: Harlan’s need for control plays out in orgasm denial, spanking, and a memorable food fight in the kitchen that ends with both of them covered in buttercream. It’s playful, dirty, and deeply connected—hallmarks of Jaine Diamond’s signature style.
One note: the story includes a trope I generally avoid, and which I would have preferred to see flagged in the marketing so I could make that choice up front. As this was an ARC without front matter, it’s possible it appears in the final content warnings.
While I’d been hoping for a slightly darker arc from Harlan, I still found this a layered, emotionally satisfying romance with depth, heat, and heart. If Jaine Diamond writes it, I’ll always read it.
As a member of Jaine Diamond's ARC team, I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion. Many thanks to Jaine and to Valentine PR.
Darling Obsession by Jaine Diamond is a slow-burn romance between CFO Haran Vance, co-owner of Vance Industries Conglomerate, and Quinn, a waitress employed at the Velvet Lounge in a family-owned bar. Harlan has to complete a personal challenge written by one of his four siblings to inherit and test each one’s character as worthy. Harlan has been saying he is seeing someone named Darla or waiting on Darla. For Harlan’s challenge, he needs to introduce Darla to his sibling, who he can’t produce for reasons only he knows. He decided to compile a checklist of someone in his employ who needed extra income that he could hire for one dinner date with his family, and Quinn Monroe won that day in more ways than one. Quinn also works as a “cake specialist” baker who runs a side business making Quinn’s Cakes, specializing in unique and exquisite cakes. Quinn was dating her boss and had worked so much to help support her mother, who was sick. When Quinn is called into Harlan Vance’s office after serving him his drinks in the cocktail lounge, she makes him a cake and asks him not to fire her as she needs the job. He said her job was safe but decided to use the information he secretly gathered about her to convince her to pretend to be Darla for one dinner with his family, which she did agree to accompany him. This dinner with Quinn was only the beginning. Quinn was encouraged to quit after Savanna, Harlan’s twin, discovered she was a company employee. Harlan tries to make things better for Quinn by spending a day together, which continues into the next day. Harlan tried to stay away, but Quinn showed up at his house, and another night rolled into more and more time spent together until a surprise caused both of them to evaluate what each meant to the other. Jaine Diamond always produces This story gem in every book she pens. Daring Obsession is an excellent read that brought me to tears more than once.
