Chase the Dark

Rate this book
Piper Griffiths wants one thing in life: To become a Consul, a keeper of the peace between humans and daemons. There are three obstacles in her way.

The first is Lyre. Incubus. Hotter than hell and with a wicked streak to match. His greatest mission in life is to get Piper into bed and otherwise annoy the crap out of her. The second is Ash. Draconian. Powerful. Dangerous. He knows too much and reveals nothing. Also, disturbingly attractive — and scary. Did she mention scary?

The third is the Sahar Stone. Top secret magical weapon of mass destruction. Previously hidden in her Consulate until thieves broke in, went on a murder spree, and disappeared with the weapon.

And they left Piper to take the fall for their crimes.

Now she’s on the run, her dreams of becoming a Consul shattered and every daemon in the city gunning to kill her. She’s dead on her own, but there’s no one she can trust — no one except two entirely untrustworthy daemons ... See problems one and two.

💀 DNF at 44%. Because juvenile crap literature isn't me.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, I just DNFed yet another fascinating masterpiece. BUT. In my defense, I have to say I had no freaking clue this book was freaking YA when I freaking started reading it. So it's not my fault if I DNFed it. I'm innocent as a newborn child here, people. Had I known this was puerile nonsense youthful prose, I would have done the only sensible thing: I would have DNFed it pre-emptively. It would have saved me from lots of unnecessary suffering and stuff.

By the way, I would like to take this opportunity to point out that, despite my ♛ queen of DNF ♛ reputation in these parts, a-girl-I-shall-not-name-because-she's-my-friend-and-I-don't-spill is much, much worse than my little self in this department. She's devious and cunning so people don't suspect a thing, but believe me, my DNF graveyard is nothing compared to hers. So there.

Okay. Now that we've established I'm a not-so-serial DNFer against my will, let's do the CNR™ thing.

Don't ask me what this cat is doing here, I have no idea.

So. Why did I DNF this infantile PoC™? ← don't know what PoC™ means? Too bad. If you read my Delightfully Fascinating Reviews (DFR™) more often, you would know that this is one of my mostest favouritest acronyms ever. But you don't, so you don't. Ha.

Anyway.

I DNFed this Infantile PoC™ (IPoC™) because:

It's YA. I already said that? Are you sure? Like really, really sure and stuff? Oh well.

Me lurrrve me yummy, demons and me want to viciously murder not like immature, silly demons. My dear Annette Marie, may I suggest a How to Write the Mostest Awesomest Demons Ever class by Professor DaCosta? Come to think of it, that might be a bit too complex for you to start with. So I'd suggest signing up for a Demons 101 class by Professor Reine first. Start with the basics and all that. You're welcome.

What's worse than a Love Triangle of Doom and Destruction (LToDaD™)? A YA Triangle of Doom and Destruction (YALToDaD™), obviously. This really is a dream come true. I've always had a soft spot for LToDaDs™, but throw in a YALToDaD™, and I'm seriously doomed. This really here pure bliss.

Piper, the enchanting (if slightly underage) heroine, is deliciously TSTL. She sometimes acts like a total nitwit, too. And her character is flatter than a cardboard box. So many endearing qualities. It's beautiful.

Ash and Lyre. The deliciously juvenile male demons in residence. Such SUPER HAWT pieces of puerile ass. YUM. I've been waiting for these guys all my life. Damn right I have. Let me tell you, my hot-as-hell sex slaves the guys in my harem are nothing but meaningless little bugs compared to these two. Yep, that's right. Ash and Lyre literally ooooooze hotness and awesomeness and stuff. Oh, and they're SUPER UBER BADDASS AND DANGEROUS, too. I think. Well that's what our lovely and slightly youngish heroine repeats over and over again, so I guess it must be true. Right.

Everything in this story is either stereotyped, clichéd, banal or predictable. But it's not ALL bad. Oh no. Sometimes the story is simply badly written. And most times the pace is uneven as hell, too. How delightful. Reading this book decidedly is a glorious experience.

» And the moral of this CNR™ is: don't read this thing. Well okay, you can read it if you're slightly insane and like YA, but otherwise, don't. This is lethally youthful and deadly crappy stuff. And therefore highly hazardous to your health. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Entertaining but forgettable.

The audiobook narrator here talks with her nose blocked which is really annoying, also, all the characters sound like teenagers, thus giving you a felling like you reading a young adult fantasy book.

Simply put this series is brilliant! The premise is exciting and fresh. I really love this unique and clever take on the traditional mythology of the Underworld and Heaven. Of demons and angels and where Earth fits in the middle of them. I love how Marie's take on these is not what anyone would ever expect. Her ideas are entirely original. The world-building is insanely detailed. There are three different worlds that are described vividly. There are different castes of supernatural creatures, called daemons, from both the Overworld and the Underworld, and they all have their different physical features, characteristics, loyalties, and ways of life. There are the offspring of humans and daemons which are referred to as haemons. And then there are the humans. There is a large amount of information surrounding this world, but it is not thrown at the reader to overwhelm them. The world-building is very fluid. It moves with the reader as the story progresses and everything feels natural. No info dumps or mind clutter of too much information. I especially love the blending of genres in this book. This book is urban fantasy, dystopian, paranormal, and supernatural all at once. I love how it doesn't feel like one single genre while reading. It feels apart from a single definition because it represents each of these genres equally well.

The characters are as wonderful as I remember. These are some of my all-time favorite characters in a book ever. EVER. They are well written with exciting and compelling character arcs. The chemistry between the characters and the witty dialogue are some of my favorite parts of the book.

The plot is exciting and I could not stop reading! The plot has been crafted with precision and it will leave you a lifelong fan of the author. You won't be able to put her books down!

The romance in this book is absolutely perfect! It is a slow-burn romance that will leave your heart pumping quickly. The way that the love interests come together is another thing that has been expertly crafted in this book. I don't know of another way to describe how perfectly the romance plays out. It is convincing and so entirely swoon-worthy!

Overall, loved reading this again! I had the immediate urge to read it again after finishing the series for the second time. This is a book series that I will continue to reread and enjoy. If you haven't tried an Annette Marie book then you are missing out on a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

ORIGINAL REVIEW
Okay, I now have a new favorite series and a new favorite author!! I cannot stress enough how absolutely amazing this book is! This book surpassed all of my expectations and then some. It has everything that I love about young adult books. I simply could not stop reading.

What I liked
These characters are perfection! I instantly fell in love with the three main characters in this series. They are magical. And the way that they flow off of one another's chemistry is flawless.

The character development is amazing! The backstories and the little things that make up who a character really is shine through. I felt like I knew these characters on a personal level. I felt what they felt and experienced things with them. I just felt so close to them.

While this story is based on other popular ideas, the way that Annette Marie fashioned it is wholly unique. I have never read anything like it. I loved the world that Annette Marie created in this book. I was devouring every detail and I couldn't get enough!

The plot is catching and well thought out. The whole story flows so nicely. There are twists and turns to keep you guessing. All of the elements of a great story are perfectly balanced to keep you wanting more and more.

I loved the writing style. The story is written very fluidly, taking you exactly where you need to go at exactly the right time. It's brilliant.

What I didn't like
Thinking the series over in my head, I can't come up with a single thing that I disliked while I was reading this series. Not a thing. Seriously. I think that only thing that I dislike is that it comes to an end.

Would I Recommend It
YES, OMG, YES!!! Get. This. Series. NOW!! If you pick up this series you will not be disappointed. It is rare that a book or a book series touches me so deeply, but this one has become my new favorite. I haven't felt this passionate about a book series in a long time.

I liked it more the second time around—probably because I'm more biased now and really love the series in general! So I am bumping my rating up to a 4!

3.5. I wasn't the biggest fan of the writing or how stupid and impulsive Piper could be, but I was entertained by the story enough.

This book is fun, dangerous, action-packed, page-turner and anything a good urban fantasy should be. The word building in this book is unique and alluring. Seventy years ago, daemons put an end to humanity’s third world war to prevent the destruction of their favorite playground, Earth. So now humans are to live a degraded life, where the consul are to remain the peace between humans and daemons. Our main female lead Piper Griffiths is the daughter of the head consul, for her entire life she only wants one thing; to become a Consul. However as usual shit happens, with the help of two sexy daemons she has to save the world (well you know what happens)

I really did like the world the author builded up, it was really different and idiosyncratic in paranormal // urban fantasy standards, the author did not just created another world with daemons but one that has so much more extent. However it would be so much better if all the details are not forced together all at once, the author could have taken more time describing the amazing world she came up with rather then putting it all together all at once creating a immense confusion.

The other thing I really enjoy about the book is the characters, meanwhile Piper our main female lead is really naïve and from times to times unreasonably stubborn and impulsive. But she definitely is a likeable protagonist whom is a good fighter and unlike typical paranormal romances protagonists Piper has a certain depth that held in her that captivated me into reading in her perspective. As for the other two other male leads Lyre and Ash, both are incredibly sexy and swoonworthy male leads. They are incredible, while Lyre is hot and fierce Ash is all powerful and dangerous, the author has successfully compluse me into falling in love with both of them. I won't say there is a absoulte love triangle happening despite the synopsis, as it is clear to Piper when it is just "lust" or real "love" happening. Which I extremely appreciate the different path the author took

I really would like to say more of this book as it was an extremely entertaining read, in some ways this book reminded me of sweet evil but for the most part it is a lot more different, :D highly recommend if you are looking for GREAT paranormal romances :) SERIOUSLY THIS BOOK DESERVE SO MUCH MORE RECOGNITION!

First read: 03/2016 - 5 stars
Second read: o2/2021 - 5 stars
Third read: 01/2024 - still 5 stars!

Being the only haemon (half human, half daemon) in existence without any magical powers isn't easy. Frowned upon by humans and not seen as an equal by either haemons or daemons, Piper is used to having to prove herself to everyone. Little does she know that what starts out as a harmless job of "babysitting" two daemons will eventually become her biggest test so far.
Now stuck with a perpetually horny incubus and a dark and dangerous draconian, Piper finds herself on the run from the most powerful of daemons, some pissed off humans and even a political organization that has nothing to lose.

Oh, this was amazing!
I can't say it often enough: I freaking love bad-ass heroines, especially in the Paranormal/ Urban Fantasy genre. And that is exactly what Piper is. Funny, smart, quick-witted, and most importantly, she totally kicks ass - with her three black belts in martial arts, her iron will and her incorruptible sense of justice. The novel is told completely from her POV and I thoroughly enjoyed being in that quick mind of hers.
Her two sidekicks, Lyre and Ash, were amazing additions, too. I instantly fell in love with them the moment I "met" them, Lyre being this delicious, flirty, tongue-in-cheek incubus you just can't help but like, while Ash is his total opposite: dark, brooding and lethal.
She closed her eyes. The only two people in the world she could trust right now were sitting on either side of her and she couldn't trust them at all.

Love triangle?

This book was a fast-paced, non-stop action ride from start to finish with some fantastic world-building, partly dystopian but mainly Urban Fantasy, unexpected twists lurking at every turn, and a wide array of intriguing and inscrutable characters.
The only regret I have is not having started this series way earlier, even though Chase the Dark has been on my TBR list since forever.

*revised review (more focused on the series as a whole) below the three wiggly dashes!*

buddy read with the wonderful Diana!

oh my god i missed Annette Marie's writing! it's crazy addictive and i can never put her books down, and i both love and hate Annette for that. Chase the Dark was no exception! with a badass MC, a flirty but sweet incubus, a sexy scary dragon dude and an adorable little (sometimes) dragon pet thing, i loved this story. the characters were amazing, the action and storyline was impeccable, and the romance left me craving more. ugh, Ash is just.... everything (he's right up there with Zylas and Shiro and i love it).

onto the next book!!

~~~
i considered writing an actual review down here but.... i don't know if i can be bothered.
basically this was a fun and entertaining series (apart from that ending) with characters that i fell in love with, and Annette Marie's iconic addictive writing that you can't put down. our little cheese-loving Zwi was a darling and a half (you get more Zwi in the collection of scenes in Lyre and Ash's POV) and Lyre was much more 3D and interesting than i originally thought. Ash and Piper both had amazing character development throughout the series, and their relationship definitely grew and improved as the series continued, which i loved. also Kiev! i highkey loved him, what a cutie!
all up, this was a good series, just not as amazing as Red Winter (god i miss Shiro... everyone should read Red Winter pronto) or Guild Codex: Demonized (everyone should also read Taming Demons for Beginners ASAP. Zylas.... now that's a demon i would love to meet).
still, this was a fun buddy read! thanks Diana hon!
(yep, this is the same series review that i posted for Unleash the Storm. ah well, deal with it.)
WTF even was this book? The plot made no sense and the number of typos or missing words was extremely distracting. Major plot points are missing (what even IS the Sahar?), the dialogue is often nonsensical, and moments that do nothing to move the plot forward (i.e. the fight in the club) are drawn out ad nauseam. The book also tries to beat you over the head with sex, but in a very obvious, trying-too-hard sort of way - rather than the characters acting sexy, the reader is told (repeatedly) that they are sexy but with nothing to substantiate it. Zwi is obviously just a smaller version of Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, which is cute, but borders on character theft. The writing is too juvenile for teens and just plain insulting for adults. I have no idea why this is so highly rated by other Goodreaders, who are usually spot on. DO NOT READ.
Final rating: 3.5/5
I went into this book with little to no expectations and I'm really glad I did. With this being the first installment in a multi-book series, a significant amount of time was spent on world-building and establishing characters/relationships. Sometimes I felt bogged down with the amount of information provided, yet I see a lot of potential here in regards to the story that the author is trying to tell over the course of this series.
At times, I thought the plot progressed rather slowly, but thankfully there were frequent action scenes which helped to move things along and recapture my interest. While some aspects were rather convenient and predictable, some of the twists/reveals did take me by surprise which increased my overall enjoyment.
I admit that I wasn't a huge fan of the characters at first, however they really grew on me by the end. Yes, Piper was impulsive and sometimes a bit immature, but I liked how her lack of magical abilities caused her to develop and rely on her own physical strength, fighting skills, and a knowledge of the daemon world. When I first encountered her daemon companions, I figured they'd be stereotypical YA male leads/love interests, but I actually found them to be more complex and intriguing than I anticipated.
While this wasn't particularly moving or deep, it was a fun adventure and I enjoyed the time I spent reading it.
#Paranormal #UrbanFantasy #ComingOfAge #Magical
I loved this!!!!
We got two sexy daemon heroes. First, there’s Lyre an Incubus who is “hotter than hell”, he has a fun and flirtatious personality and loves to constantly tease Piper. Then there’s Ash, a Draconian. He is powerful, dangerous and scary. Personality wise, he is the exact opposite of Lyre. Both makes the perfect heroes. But yes, I do love one of them more :D… I am a sucker for powerful and intense alpha. And Ash pretty much falls into that category. ;)
Now the heroine, Piper, a Haemon, meaning she is half human, half daemon. She also has a quite loveable character. She is sweet and although she lacks magic, she can kick ass! Her sole purpose is to become a Consul, a keeper of the peace between humans and daemons, and make her father proud, who happens to be the head of the Consulate.
But when someone went to steal the Sahar Stone, a top secret magical weapon of mass destruction, leaving behind bodies of dead people… Piper was left to take the fall for the crime.
So now, Piper is on the run with no one to trust except the two daemon, Lyre and Ash. But could she trust them?
This is a fast paced, heart pumping action packed book. Given there is no romance involved (yet), it is high on sexual tension! And with just the right amount of humour.
It didn’t take long for me to be drawn in the story. It comes with a lot of surprising twists. It is magical, we got all sorts of daemons and underworld creatures… And great world building.
Since this is just the start of a series, the ending left me desperate for the next book… which is already out for pre-order in Amazon. And, incidentally, the first book is free for kindle unlimited subscribers.
Ms. Annette Marie is definitely going up on my list of authors to watch for.
One of my favourite scenes were when Piper, in exchanged for an information they needed, ended up in the fight ring. A no-holds-barred fight... with daemons... Not to the death, but the fighters will not stop until someone is beaten unconscious. It is a must-read. I wanted to copy that scene here but considering I think it is one of the highlight of the story, I should refrain from doing so. :D
FLYLeF Book Reviews
Original Post: Chase the Dark at FLYLeF (www.flylef.com)
CHASE THE DARK, by Annette Marie, is a very promising start to the Steel and Stone series – a young adult contemporary fantasy. It’s a light and fun read. But where it lacks in heftiness, it more than makes up with the intriguing characters and their nearly impossible undertakings.
Meet Piperel Griffiths – half human, half daemon – a haeman. All Piper ever wanted was to become a Consul, a keeper of peace between humans and daemons. Life as the daughter of the powerful Head Consul was surprisingly uneventful: school, training, and homework. That is until the “sinfully irresistible” Lyre, the “enigmatic and lethal” Ash, and the destructive Sahar Stone converge in an explosive way snapping her out of her reverie. Framed for stealing the Stone, she runs for her life with only Lyre and Ash to aid her. She embarks on a deadly quest to clear her name and quite possibly loose her heart.
Chase the Dark definitely tilts the scale more towards contemporary fantasy than paranormal romance...for now. But, romance fans will be rewarded with their patience as a delicious love story slowly unravels. It’s not instantaneous and wild, but rather slow and sweet – like unexpectedly falling in love with your best friend.
I. Love. This. Book.
$%#@&!!!
That was what my brain was doing the whole time I was reading.
So where do I even start?!
First, the characters. All three main characters were great. Lyre was flirty and playful but also ridiculously lovable and kind. Ash was mysterious and dangerous but also loyal and protective. Piper was kickass and intelligent but also emotionally vulnerable and forgiving. They were three-dimensional, all unique from each other, and it made for a really interesting team and dynamic between characters. I also loved, loved, LOVED Ash's daemon form and the way the whole concept of shading played into the story. Ok, I really just loved everything about Ash and his terrifying, brooding, dangerous, yet so-full-of-goodness ways, but I'll let you get to know him yourself!
And the plot? PERFECT! It flowed so organically, never forced. The obstacles and problems that continued to spring up were not sheer coincidence or the outcome of ridiculous, too-stupid-to-live decisions. Also, there was a clear goal from the beginning, something I love because I like to know where my stories are headed instead of feeling like I'm aimlessly wandering. To top it all off, it completely engaged me to the point that I was clutching at my shirt, pausing at certain parts just to take a breath, and laughing out loud.
And the writing style! I have to talk about the writing style because I was so in love. I'm big on the whole highlighting thing when I read on my kindle, but I found myself wanting to highlight entire pages because it was all so beautifully written that I couldn't even choose one line or figure out where to stop.
Also, technically, this book is YA, but I didn't get that stereotypical YA vibe at all. Piper was actually mature with the ability to make GOOD decisions and to not sit around being self-deprecating the way characters often do in YA.
My review has gotten ridiculously long, and this book is never going to live up to anyone's expectations after reading this, but I just loved it too much to rein in my excitement. I didn't even hesitate to immediately buy an ebook copy after renting it from Amazon Prime and then the paperback later on.
I think on some subconscious level I've made it my personal mission in life to make this series more well-known because I recommend it every chance I get, even to strangers. This was an unbelievably amazing start to a series that I recommend to everyone who likes fantasy (and maybe even those who don't)!
*4.5/5 ☆*
Chase the Dark was an excelent YA paranormal. I've had some expectations coming into this one, because I enjoyed the author's Red Winter, but it definitely exceeded them. I pretty much loved everything about this, this seems to be an amazing introduction to a promising paranormal series to come.
Somewhere between very high 4 ☆ and 5☆ stars for me. I've debating giving this one 4 ☆ overall, in case the series only gets better and better, but in the end I enjoyed it was too much to give it anything less than.
Pros:
• I LOVED the main trio!
• The book is told from Piper's, the main female character's, POV. She is a haemon - part haemon and part human and is training to be a Consul. I thought she was great, believable heroine who is strong, but still with a lot of room to grow later on in the series.
• Then there's Ash and Lyre. They are the main supporting characters and daemons from the Underworld. Lyre was delightfully witty and fun and flirty incubus, and I loved his little flirtations with Piper. My favourite from the two was definitely Ash. A mysetious dangerous daemon who is a scary fighter badass yet maybe softer and more caring than exepected?
• The plot was really fun and grabbing from start to finish.
• There was also nicely done paranormal world building. The story is set in a sort of near-futurustic post-apo time after wars and nuclear weapons have destroyed cities and killed many people. There are also two other worlds - the ones with daemons - Overworld and Underworld (a sort of Heaven and Hell - but the creature there might not be all that morally different from each other). I thought the world building was pretty nice with hints at exploring more of it in the future.
• This is a really good YA paranormal in the likes of (but not the same) Richelle Mead, Eliza Crewe or Rebecca Schaeffer.
• There's also the cutest little pet dragon-cat (called dragonette) Zwi!!!
I'd rec this one for those who are looking for some great YA paranormal series.
And for once - drum-roll - it was not only a fresh, hooking read. With its well-developed world-building and its dimensional, intriguing characters (Lyre and Ash plucked my heartstrings) it has totally restored my faith in YA urban fantasy.
I'll write something more asap, now I'm busy with the sequel ;)
Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. Started off really not enjoying it. But by the end I was pretty interested.
After reading the Red Winter series I decided to check AM's other books. While this was an interesting read it didn't grip me the way the Red winter trilogy did. I struggled to get into the story. The pace was so slow and I feel like nothing really happened even though tons of things happened, it's just in a weird place.
I want to know the deal about Piper so I will be checking out the rest of the series.
Buddy Read with Sophie at Beware of the Reader and Raven at Dreamy Addictions
Chase The Dark was an action packed ride that had me completely obsessed. With magic, secrets, friendship, betrayal, lust and the beginnings of something more in the pages, I fell madly in love with this book. The characters became my friends and not only did I deeply feel everything they did, but I was terrified with what was to come next. There was a richness to the world they lived in, and I felt like I was with them every step of the way. If you love urban fantasy, friendships, action or slow burn romance then definitely add this one to your tbr!
The only two people in the world she could trust right now were sitting on either side of her and she couldn’t trust them at all. They were daemons.
By that second page, I already loved Piper Griffiths' thoughts. She was an Apprentice Consul and worked and lived at the Consulate, which was like an embassy to the daemons. Our world had been opened to the Underworld and Overworld years ago and the Consuls helped keep the peace and protected humans from daemons. Right from the beginning we got to see Piper's fighting skills. She was fierce, deadly and totally kicked ass. Piper was a haemon, part human and daemon, but she possessed no magic like the other haemons and daemons around her. And that was a huge issue, since all Consul's had magic to help keep the peace.
Some nights she wondered if she was looking for goodness in him that wasn’t there. Other nights, she imagined a thousand ways to tell him thank you and none seemed good enough.
While daemons stayed at the Consulate, there were two she'd seen around before. Lyre and Ash. Lyre was an incubus, who was sexy, playful, intoxicating and fun. He had a heart of gold underneath it all and I loved watching how much he cared for his friends. And then there was Ash. He was a draconian who was extremely powerful and had a dangerous reputation. Others feared and respected him, so I was leery of him, just like Piper. But when Piper got framed for taking the Sahar Stone, a magical weapon of mass destruction, she found herself running for her life. With Lyre and Ash right by her side.
The world was spinning but Ash’s arms were steady and strong. Always strong. He was her only rock in the ocean of adversity that had flooded her life since the night of the attack on the Consulate. He was the only one who showed up again and again, his strength offered, nothing asked in return.
While I loved Lyre, I found myself becoming obsessed with Ash. Ash was a huge mystery who was sarcastic, smart, and quick on his feet. He was so subtle and mysterious that he pulled me right into his dark web. Especially since he helped defend and protect Piper's life every step of the way, even if they struggled or butted heads with each other. And the moments where he would show his emotions, oh, Ash stole my breath away.
She clamped her fingers over the back of his head and pulled him closer still, demanding even more. His hand tightened in her hair and she tilted her head farther back as their kiss deepened into something even wilder.
Ash, Lyre and Piper were running for their lives, while trying to prove their innocence. Being thrown into life and death situations made them quickly form a bond and I loved how much they trusted each other. Moments between them made me smile and laugh, which was needed with all of the action that surrounded them. It felt like I always had sweaty palms lol. On top of that, I had no clue what was going to happen next. Just like that moment with the hottest kiss ever *fans face*. Yup I was obsessed.
Black irises met hers. Terror sucked out the breath she’d just taken. She clenched her teeth and fought to remember his careful touch on her cheek. He wouldn’t hurt her. He wouldn’t. He’d promised.
Chase the Dark was impossible to put down! And while I figured out one thing, there were quite a few twists I didn't see coming. So with betrayal, secrets, friendship, lies, and trust, you can count on this book pulling your emotions every which way. Plus I have so much hope for a certain two characters. If they move forward, their love for each other is going to be beyond powerful *fingers crossed*!
“Is he alive, Zwi?” she whispered. She gathered the little creature against her chest and hugged her gently. “Please let him be alive.”
PS I don't want to say how she's connected to the story, but I loved Zwi with my whole heart. She was a little dragonet, and I wanted to steal her out of this book!
I really liked this book and recommend it to everyone who likes urban fantasy with dark & dangerous demons and scary “angels”. The world building is not really unique but still interesting. After humanity almost wiped itself out during something akin to World War III, the demons from the Underwold (dark) and Overworld (bright) revealed themselves and destroyed all mass destruction weapons thus saving Earth, their favorite playground. Humans now live in a kind of dystopian future, where consul intermediaries (try to) keep the peace between humans and demons from both worlds. I really liked the backstory; I just wish Annette Marie would have taken the time to describe the world more. It felt slightly as if something was missing. I didn’t get a real feel for the world the characters lived in. This is mainly because the story is too focused on the action and lacks insight delivered in inner reflections by the main character. From another point of view there is no info-dumping. Yeah to that! Instead the information is told in bits and pieces, strewn in almost as an afterthought. Even though the premise is interesting I think the book could have profited from a little bit more reflection or inner monologue.
The action is fast paced and thus the book never gets boring. I’ve read it in two days and I am really looking forward to the next in the series. Piper, a Haemon (a cross between human and daemon) wants to become a Consul just like her father. But then the Sahar, an ancient amulet, is stolen and Piper is suspected of the theft. On the run from both the demon hunters and human prefects she can only rely on the help of two demons: Ash and Lyre to uncover the truth behind the attack on the consulate and the whereabouts of her father and her uncle. Their journey leads them from attack to attack and fight to fight. From her home consulate to a hospital, an underground fighting club, an abandoned manor in the woods and some few stops in between. I was really drawn into the story but would have wished for a little bit less fighting and more character interaction.All the fighting felt a little bit repetitive interrupted only by some surprising and some not so surprising twists and turns. It’s here that you see clearly the inexperience of a debut author but one that I am sure in time and with more writing will get masterful in delivering a gripping and fascinating story.
What I really loved in this story are the characters and the build-up of the romance. Despite the blurb, there really is no love triangle. Thank God. I loved how the author delivered slowly more and more information about the characters. It was like peeling an onion. Everyone has hidden depths and motives. Some are revealed in this book, some secrets remain to come undone in the future. For me this is exactly the reason to give it 4 instead of 3 stars, because every character here has strengths but also weaknesses. Piper is good fighter, headstrong, with her head on her shoulders. But sometimes she acts rashly and impulsively not thinking everything through and it gets her into bad and dangerous situations. In fact it makes her a really bad consul apprentice as in mediation is clearly not her forte. But also it makes her a good fighter and one who will not so easily give up. She is just the right amount of spunky and fragile and she has humor. I liked her character, a lot. And I’m eagerly waiting to read more about her adventures.
In the end it’s a well done coming of age, action oriented urban fantasy with nasty demons, mythological creatures and a spunky heroine. The romance was well developed, leaving room for more in the future. The book reminded me a little bit of the movie Immortal (2004) and Penryn & the End of Days by Susan Ee, although sadly not as dark and freaky. It also reminded me sometimes of The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare with the consulate.
