A book length interview with one of the great French filmmakers of the 20th Century. If it is a film where there is little dialogue, lots of driving around Paris at dawn, men with hats and trenchcoats - it's more likely a film by Jean-Pierre Melville. Who by the way was totally obsessed with Pop American popular culture. He even wore a cowboy hat, American like sunglasses, and drove a huge American car through out Paris.
He had his own studio where he shot a lot of his films and was pretty much independent from the studios. So, in other words, I can't think of anything better than going to a theater to see some of his films. DVD is second best, and so is this book.
An essential book for fans of the French director, in which he discusses all but his final film (made after the book was published), frustratingly out of print with used editions prohibitively expensive. Thank goodness for libraries.
I saw my first Melville film nearly 50 years ago and I have remained a fan ever since. A small number are not available in the UK, but I've seen the rest. I would read chapters of this extensive interview after each viewing, and while it is unlikely I will get to see the others, the interview with Melville on them piques interest. Maybe one day. For now, an interesting interview and my admiration increases. I don't agree with many of his views, but I do with others. More importantly, the insight into his passion for filmmaking and the themes he tackled enriches viewing his films - which, thanks to modern technology, I can easily watch again.
Melville is highly intelligent, well read, serious about his craft and with a good sense of humor. A member of Resistance during WW2, a filmmaker working outside the post-war French film industry, he has a lot of stories to tell. Having said that, he is highly selective about what story he puts into a movie. The only topics I disagreed with him were God and spaghetti Westerns. At least three commandments that can be carved on the stone according to Jean-Pierre Melville: have ambitions, be serious about your craft, don't ever take yourself too seriously.
couldn't find this for free online and in english so it was an easy decision to fork over some big bucks (might scan or just take photos someday as i refuse to destroy my books). absolutely worth it; very insightful (and often fun!!) stuff. highly recommended to all fans and will definitely revisit each chapter whenever i'm in a rewatch mood!
this book is about the one of the greatest new wave's directors of the French cinema, Jean Pierre Melville, who has the best movies about crime, pain, and loneliness that injected to me the one of the best cinematic experiences in my life
