Groups of survivors continue the battle to make it through every day in a world with no power, cities destroyed by bombs and hordes of dinosaurs roaming the streets looking for food. The dinosaurs aren’t picky and anyone who falls into their path can easily be overcome and become food for these predators. Survivors have to avoid swarms of smaller, chicken sized dinosaurs abound, able to take down and clean a corpse in minutes, to larger flying dinosaurs most don’t see coming until they are diving to attack, to the large, usual types of dinosaurs most would recognise. Nurse Alan Graf continues to protect Ellis Webster, a young boy in his care and has joined up with ex-addict Nikki Henderson, as they search for food in a broken-down car, are in the Midlands. They have found out that a searchlight is effective against many of the dinosaurs they have come across. Food supplies are getting scarcer as the days go on and they will have to move on soon. In Devon are ex-convict Mark Raine is with his daughter Hannah and a group of others, when the two of them decided to visit his wife’s grave. They get stuck in an underground room in the church after a dinosaur stampede and are rescued by a stranger, who only goes by the name ‘Fox’. He rescues them, but wants a favour in return, some food and to meet the rest of their group. It seems he has been watching them all for some time! Teenagers Kenny Green and Emily Grenfell struggle to escape London and are lucky enough to be far away when another nuclear bomb hits. They are holed up and spot survivors fleeing the blast and however tempted hey might be to help, it is safer to stay inside. When they do finally go out, it is because Emily is certain she heard a dog bark, and they find a dog tied up, which they rescue and Kenny names Rage.

Nikki has been dragging around the laptop she found in Egg’s home, after a bomb hit and he was killed, finally freeing her from his imprisonment. She is desperate to find out what is on it, but the battery is flat and there is no power anywhere they have been so far. She wants to know how he found her in the first place, plus how he tracked her after she escaped the first time and even sent a drone after her, killing her friend. Somehow, he was able to track her and the computer had details of other women he had been tracking in England. She had managed to find a laptop battery after they saw a small plane crash and one of the passengers had a laptop of the same kind. It is Ellis who manages to find her details and files about her on the laptop, but they get stuck when a file needs a password. Ellis had found an encyclopaedia that had lots of pictures of dinosaurs and was able to name most of the ones they saw. He is always optimistic and hoping to reunite with his family, even though there is probably little chance they are still alive. The complete opposite to Nikki, who is struggling and still feels like someone is following her! On the outskirts of London are Kenny and Emily, who meet a group of staff from Bellswater Leisure Centre, Matt, Jerry, Craig and Brad, who have a running van, but aren’t much good at surviving as they describe themselves. Jerry Killerton was the duty manager at the leisure centre, whilst Craig Bartlett had been on the verge of becoming a pro surfer, Brad Leach used to teach archery which is pretty handy skill nowadays, and Matt Tones aka Tunes taught hip-hop dance. The four men were heading to Felixstowe, after hearing a radio message about a container ship for survivors that had lots of supplies. Mark and Hannah bring Fox back to the stronghold they share with Lilian and her grandmother June Lammonby, and Dave Brussells who acts as their sentry at Tavistock Town Hall, where they have made their hideout. Lilian recognises (James) Fox and is sure he recognised her as well and that scares her! He was an associate of her estranged, abusive husband, who she had escaped from, and is sure he recognises her.

Alan, Nikki and Ellis spot a large group going door to door and have to decide if they might want to join up with them, but the group has twelve members and large groups attract attention. Ellis jumped at the chance to join this group upon learning there were other children there. The group has created a base on a farm just over the hill and Alan being a nurse would be a great fit. Only issue is the group seems to be somewhat religious and want them to join their prayer sessions each evening! Nikki used the help of one of the family heads to access more of Egg’s data on her and other women, soon leading her to discover that there seems to be an organised group going after particular women in the UK, and she is one of their targets! Mark and his group have been keeping an eye on dinosaur movements and spotted a bus of twenty or so men and women probably heading to Plymouth, followed a day later by a herd of Komodo dragons. Fox is annoying Mark no end, not doing his chores and eavesdropping on him and his daughter all the time, as well as others. The group had agreed to let him have a couple of weeks of food, but they have to put up with him and his stories as well. One story he tells is of a crazy group in transporter lorry, firing off fireworks from the back. He didn’t catch the name of the leader, but a woman who was with him was called Melinda and it seems June knows her. Turns out the leader was Daron Shayol, an old enemy of June’s, who calls her the Dragon Slayer, for killing his pet dragon! Fox is also flirting heavily with Lillian, although she really only has eyes for Mark, but knows he is mourning his wife. Nikki finds details that another woman being tracked is only some ten miles away and goes off to find her and see if she knows anything about who are tracking them and why. Alan and Fox come to blows, as his interest in his daughter Hannah takes a creepy turn.

Nothing is simple or even easy, as situations change and danger comes to one and all, as they have to make split second decisions, decide who it is best to stick with and who to trust. Nikki’s journey for more answers goes awry and matters are coming to a head between Mark and Fox. They have been betrayed by Fox and even another of the farm group has taken something of Nikki’s, her only link to figuring out what is happening to her and others being hunted. The Dragon Slayer is surrounded by an old enemy and others get away by the skin of their teeth. It seems that the dinosaurs aren’t the most dangerous creatures out there that survivors need to avoid! So much more to be resolved and I look forward to reading what comes next. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout, and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I really enjoyed this as a fourth entry in the Lambs series, it had that element that I enjoyed from from Chris Ward's writing. The concept worked well with the series and was engaged with the characters that were in the story. I enjoyed getting to read this and hope to read more. It uses the scifi concept and the previous books perfectly to tell the story and characters were so well written.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
