Margaret and Jeff live in humdrum suburbia. Married for 25 years, they were an unremarkable middle aged couple working toward retirement.
But Jeff and Margaret shared a secret.
It had been Jeff's idea to spice up a flagging sex life by converting their fourth bedroom into an adult play room. Sleeping in the spare room had once been a lonely and sad affair, the consequence of a headache or a badly timed squabble over some minor domestic issue. But if Jeff found Margaret in the spare room now, it was the green light for increasingly erotic playtimes.
But neither Jeff nor Margaret had shared all of their secrets, Jeff is harbouring an increasingly overwhelming secret desire and Margaret hides a colourful past experience.
Will Jeff's fantasy escape into a new reality in the Fourth Room, will Margaret's naughty secret be exposed?
Well written and tantalizing, “The Fourth Room” depicts an older, married couple’s endeavor to rekindle their sexual relationship. Transforming a spare room into a space exclusively reserved for the couple’s private sexual encounters, Jeff extends an invitation to Margaret’s ex-husband and several other men, to watch or participate. Jeff appears to be a relatively passive individual, the opposite of Margaret’s ex, Tom. Jeff loves his wife but decides to fulfill his fantasy to watch Tom engage in intimate acts with Margaret, while he and others watch. Although Margaret is in love with her husband, she is still physically attracted to Tom and willingly participates in the encounter. During the interaction with Tom, Margaret experiences a flashback to the adult store where she lost her virginity to a toy while a much older, unattractive store owner contributes to Margret’s pursuit of pleasure.
Provocative and fast-paced, the characterizations are quite complex with adequate contextual information to provide a framework as well as an understanding of the primary characters relationship dynamics. I was somewhat confused with the unexpected shift to Margaret’s flashback, which disrupted the pace as well as flow of the story-line and preceded a rather abrupt ending. However, throughout the story, I found myself immersed in the relationship intricacies between the three main protagonist and would welcome a sequel with additional development of Tom’s character as well as the unknown voyeurs.
Overall, “The Fourth Room” is a fast-paced, highly entertaining story, imbued with high heat, interesting characters and enough complexity to fully engage readers.

This is the first of Tom Covenent's published reads I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed the erotic short story. I rarely read short stories because of the lack of satisfaction or completion but I am glad I read The Fourth Room. Although short it is not lacking in detail or erotic plot and dare I say taboo pleasure.
Margaret and Jeff a seemingly happily married couple that's passion and sex has depleted over the years lacked spice and erotic nature. The Fourth Room of their house has become their fantasy room. This is the place they may fulfill their most extreme of fantasies. Jeff loves his wife and wants nothing more but to give her what she needs and longs for but how will this fantasy play out? Can Margaret go through with Jeff's offering and the couple stay intact?
Do I recommend Tom's The Fourth Room? Absolutely! A great erotic read. My reaction actually surprised me.

Where to begin?
I deeply appreciated some the artistry of language and the evocative scene, most of the story set in the titular fourth room, a room set aside purely for sex by a married couple in a seemingly successful attempt to put some spark back into their marriage.
The three central characters, Jeff, Tom, and Margaret, have some very decent depth and a clear representation of a storied past. But eventually, the story starts to break apart a little when we are "treated" to a flashback of Margaret going to buy a sex toy. This leads to the biggest issue for me: the fracture of a good story with an overwrought side story that truly did not fit the narrative, and brings us back to the main story with a lurch that ends the story abruptly.
Good idea, good writing but too many jarring lurches and loose threads for me.
It was a bit over descriptive at the beginning for me. Once it got going, it was a pretty good read. But then the story left not returning to what was happening in the room.
This was a short story, very erotic and stimulating. A snippet in time if you will. I personally enjoyed this tasty tidbit. A bedtime story with a significant other, or not.
