Time Walkers Series 2-Book Bundle: The Legend of the Bloodstone(Book 1) & Return of the Pale Feather(Book 2)
When Maggie McMillan is sent back to 1622 Virginia by the power of a magical Bloodstone, she is captured by Winkeohkwet, a warrior torn between his duty to kill her and his desire to keep her. Thrust into a life she had only read about in history books, Maggie must struggle to survive in a world gone mad. Cursed with the knowledge of what the future holds for both the English and the Powhatan, Maggie and Winn fight to hold onto the ties that bind them. Old Norse magic and ancient bloodlines brought them together, but writing their future lies within their grasp. As danger and magic test the bond of blood between them, they must embrace their demons - or risk losing everything
E.B. Brown enjoys researching history and genealogy and uses her findings to cultivate new ideas for her writing. She lives New Jersey and is a proud graduate of Drexel University. Her debut novel, The Legend of the Bloodstone, was a Quarterfinalist in the 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest. An excerpt from another Time Walkers novel, A Tale of Oak and Mistletoe, was a finalist in the 2013 RWA/NYC We Need a Hero Contest. E.B. loves mudding in her Jeep Wrangler and likes to cause all kinds of havoc the rest of the time. She resides in New Jersey.
I wasn't sure what to think of The Time Walkers book bundle before I cracked open the cover. It combines time travel, history, and romance- all of which can overpower a good story if not proportioned properly. But E.B. Blake accomplishes the task. This bundle was quick and fun to read. Though a bit heavy on the romance, Time Walkers kept me guessing to the last. I enjoyed being blasted into American history, and experiencing first hand the struggles between the English settlers and the Indians during the 1600s. It was easy to identify with Maggie. She finds herself thrust into a world where women have no rights, and must carve her own place in it. Maggie shows great patience for the men who make the decisions in her new life- patience I would never have been able to show. Overall, I liked this book. I could have done without so many sex scenes, and the plot was simple, but I was entertained and enjoyed the unique look at history that Time Walkers offers.
What can I say? I have to wonder why no one (that I know of) has thought to call time travelers Time Walkers before? A stroke of brilliance, there.
The Two Book Bundle is a compilation of "Legend of the Bloodstone" and "Return of the Pale Feather". I'm going to review them each separate, except to say that both of these stories are well written and engaging.
First, "Legend of the Bloodstone": Maggie is swept back in time to meet her future in an Indian named Winn. It is not an easy path. She is a wanted woman with a price on her head, just by virtue of showing up. There is unrest between the Natives and the English, and it is a dangerous time even without the burden of being a Time Walker.
I enjoy the idea posed in this book, and it is presented in a believable way. I had no trouble accepting the idea that Maggie was transported 300+ years into the past. I love Maggie's strength and her constant battle to assert her place, and that of women in general, in this new world.
There were a couple distracting elements. I had some trouble following the pace of the story. I kept thinking that time was passing much faster than it was. The author would write about 'the weeks in the camp' or 'months in town', or whatever, and then she would mention that only a week had passed. It was very disconcerting at times. The other issue I had was getting used to the English saying 'ye' and 'yer' - it had me thinking they were all Scottish. I thought folks in that time period were more likely to say 'thee' and 'thou', so I found it distracting.
Moving on to the "Return of the Pale Feather": I liked this story, too. I was hoping it would be more about Makedawa and Rebecca and their budding romance, and was a little surprised that it was still Maggie and Winn. But once I realized that their story was continuing, I was able to make the shift. (What I get for not reading the blurb closely, I guess.)
The battle of wills between Maggie and Winn, yet their helpless (that's not the word I really want, but I can't think of the right one at the moment) surrender to each other makes for a dynamic relationship, and I felt for both of them as they search for common ground that doesn't demand that the other change into someone they are not.
From eeking out an existence in their little family/village, to fighting the English, to discovering Maggie's long lost kin, this story moves in a more linear fashion to me. I love the idea of
This book was provided to me through Goodreads first reads. All opinions are my own.
I have a personal rating system and Time Walkers met all of my criteria for 5 stars. I could hardly wait to retire for the night (my main reading time) to get back to this book. In fact, I did something I have never done....took it instead of my kindle when going to appointments.
I was fascinated from the beginning. Time Walkers covers history, romance, time travel, native Americans - all genres that I love. All in one book - what more could a person ask? Terrific.
I dislike reading the "particulars" of a story in reviews (those are provided elsewhere after all) - so try not to go into the details overmuch.
The author has done a great job of making sure that her historic facts are accurate and including them in the story. I liked her including things in such an unexpected way (meeting someone that Maggie knew from history books). It was interesting, enjoyable and most of all believable.
There's also a novella and a third book in this series. I'm not sure if they are "out" yet, but I do plan to get both when I can. I love the series and want to continue reading it. I would recommend this book to anyone liking any of the genre I mentioned.
I am so excited to read these books. I won them through Goodreads firstreads (the first time I've ever won anything) and I cannot wait to get started reading. The premise sounds absolutely wonderful and I'm counting the days until I find the books in my mailbox. Review to be updated once I have finished the books.
I didn't make it very far into these books. It opens with the time travel and is immediately a harlequin romance, the time walking female is so attracted to the broad shouldered super sexy Indian who found and rescued her. I'm sure there was a story in there after all that but I got tired of reading about how sexy he was very quickly.
I love time travels, especially stories about Native Americans. The first book I ever wrote was a Native American time travel so I was really looking forward to reading this book. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale that starts off in 2012 and goes back to 1622. I had no idea how the book was going to end, which I usually figure out, so I'd say Ms. Brown did a good job. I look forward to reading the next in the series.
