Based on the merits of the three stories I was able to finish (and the one I skimmed) I think 2-Stars is a fairly generous rating for this collection. Unbeknownst to me, all of these stories were previously published Signet romances from the late 90’s that are being repackaged and resold to a modern audience. If I’m any indication, the modern Romance reader may have little tolerance for the cheats and shortcuts the authors used to indicate Love between each Hero and heroine.
The “masquerade” heading is slightly misleading for quite a few of these stories as the disguise or false identity only lasts for a few moments before everything is out in the open. I disliked the inclusion of a Paranormal story with a slightly inspirational feel to it (was PNL/INSP even a genre back in the 90’?) I also noticed a sad trend of horribly stubborn, controlling, shrewish and slightly angry women being passed off as strong, confident and proud heroines who are instantaneously loveable for these attributes. Fortunately I must have stopped short before finding the TSTL woman was bound to make an appearance.
The heroes in these stories weren’t much better, with most of them coming across as the typical Rake persona who magically falls for said “feisty” woman who instantly makes his you know what hard and his brain turn to mush. My personal favorite (sarcasm) was the hero who fell in LOVE having only spoken to his beautiful heroine twice and both times they were fights! Way to think with the wrong head there sunshine.
Unfortunately the worst part of these stories had to be just how dry and boring the romance aspects were. There was little to no chemistry between the couples as they went through that Getting to Know You stage of the relationship. Their conflicts were too mechanical, following the standard fare of Man who doesn’t want marriage meets Woman who doesn’t want marriage. Romance will ensue, right? Right? Nope! In each story the Love was suddenly turned on like a switch with no real build up to that self-discovery moment for each main character. We’re told that they are now MAD for one another and it’s just the external conflict keeping them apart (Society, Family Feuds, Bad Uncles, etc.) Throw in a few plucky secondary characters to either push the MC towards or away from each other and you’ve basically got the formula for every darn story in this group.
I’d really only recommend this book to readers looking for a shot of nostalgia for the books their mothers used to read or needing to find a cure for their chronic insomnia. There are too many new releases from Indie authors worth the $0.99!

Supreme good read
I was pleasantly surprised to find that this collection is filled with exciting stories. There is not a dull book in the series. I tend to shy away from collections because there is usually one good book and the rest not so, but after reading these, I plan to seek out other works by each of these authors.

Some very good some mediocre May 2022
Loved the first three stories which were fast paced and well written, my favourite was Gwen's Ghost very witty and amusing. The fourth and sixth stories were just tolerable, the plots were fine but the style of writing let them down.

Fantastic price, wonderful opportunity to explore some very good Regency authors and the unifying theme is particularly fun for the Hallowe'en season.
It was Jo Beverley who mentioned this boxed set on twitter—I’m so glad she did because not only a wide range of terrific authors (Lynn Kerstan, Allison Lane, and Gail Eastwood, just to name a few) and what a deal (.99!)!
The story that I enjoyed greatly was Gwen's Ghost by Alicia Rasley and Lynn Kerstan, a romance with a little supernatural twist to it. Valerian Caine is a ghost who is offered the chance to return to his rakish Georgian life if he completes a task in Regency times, 100 years or so after his death during a duel at the hands of a cuckolded husband. Is Valerian enthralled with Regency times? No indeed—he constantly bemoans the staid, sober garments of aristocratic Regency gentlemen. Where are the jeweled high heels, the seductive black heart patches, the colourful embroidered coats? Here are his thoughts as he joins the living again,
No complaints so far, he thought, examining a waistcoat which, to his astonishment, halted at his waist instead of reaching to mid thigh. It was singularly devoid of embroidery. Over it, a dark-blue jacket with brass buttons was similarly plain. English fashion had certainly declined since his previous lifetime.

I love Historical Romances, and it was a pleasure, and easy to get lost in this bunch of great author's!
