The Romantics #2

700 Senses of Summer

Rate this book
Aurora Whitlock hit rock bottom.

Broke, single, and mourning her career going up in smoke, she decides to kick-start her new life by renovating the bones of an old beach house hidden along the Carolina coast.

What a cliché—inheriting a fixer-upper from a deceased relative. That kind of thing only happens in books.

But beggars can’t be choosers. The Old Whitlock Place, and all its secrets, is home sweet home for the summer.

Jack Wharton didn’t expect to find a summertimer squatting in the dilapidated mansion next door.

As a career firefighter tasked with protecting Cedar Island, North Carolina, he’s seen a thing or two. But he’s never seen anything quite like her.

Painting walls and fixing floors in the middle of summer shouldn’t be that hard to handle. But the temperature isn’t the only thing that’s hot. Can Jack and Aurora’s sizzling romance stand the heat? Or will the secrets they uncover consume them?

This read sparked joy for me in places, dragged in others, and did feel predictable at times. I did like it and I think I would have liked it more if I wasn’t feeling moody AF and reading in tiny increments when I can.

Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and both are experienced (h was in a relationship where her ex stole from her; H had ONS with summer visitors to their small, coastal town but sounded like he was less interested in hookups more recently).

Some tropes/themes:
☆ Romance writer FMC with writer’s block
☆ Firefighter MMC with a wide protective streak
☆ Both have baggage
☆ MMC falls first and can be pushy
☆ Independent FMC
☆ Ride or die friend group
☆ Only together for a short time angst
☆ Banter
☆ Dirty talk and edging
☆ Some discussion of and on page scenes of intensity/injury, including fires
☆ A touch of mystery
☆ Writing style is poetic/imagery laden at times

Aurora (h) is in town to renovate her great-aunt’s beach house so that she can sell it and pay off some debts that her ex has left her saddled with. She needs a reset because even though she’s a bestselling author, the stress of her last release has left her with a block that feels like it’s the end of her career. Her new neighbor at the beach, Jack (H), is a firefighter who’s intent on helping her with every little thing and makes it clear from almost their first words that he’s into her. Aurora’s only planning on being there for a short time, Jack doesn’t usually take chances on relationships but wants her, and the attraction is throwing up all the heat.

I wouldn’t say this is a slow burn, but these two thankfully don’t immediately jump into bed either. There’s still plenty of sexy time, no worries. I do feel like they both knew each other very well before they started getting physical so the intimacy levels were at least partially established first. I did find it odd that Jack was so sure so fast that he would want more from Aurora, given his personal issues with caring about others. Aurora’s concerns about not wanting to hurt him or herself were extremely valid. Sometimes when Jack pushed, I wanted her to push him on out of the house lol (she does tell him not to just walk himself in). So I felt conflicted about Jack’s choices in some places, even as I overall liked him.

I loved Aurora’s best friends though and I was familiar with them from the first book in this series, which you do not have to have read first. Miles (the husband of one of her besties) has an amazing scene with Jack where he makes it clear exactly what will happen to Jack if he hurts Aurora, while wearing hilarious shorts. Pure Miles and I love him. Aurora’s friend group was a pain point for me in reading though because she pulls away at times since her besties are writers and she thinks her writing is done, which isn’t how ride or die friendship works, you know? I also wished that she had a moment on page with her mom before the book ended. That relationship was strained and it’s doing better by the end, yet we don’t see her mom and her together, which is esp crazy to me after a big occurrence near the end.

I wouldn’t say this is exactly a beachy book because there aren’t many scenes of them on the beach and none in the water that I recall. The coastal vibes are strong though and the setting is atmospheric. Most of the story is day to day renovations, Aurora and Jack circling each other, little moments of discovery mixed in, and a thread of a mystery as Aurora finds hidden items in the house that no one knows what they mean. The pacing does feel off at times, maybe because of where the tension is built from or just unevenness, I’m not sure why. I like this author’s stories, yet her writing style also doesn’t wholly capture me either.

There’s no third act breakup, but there is a rise in angst and them facing whether their time will come to an end or not. The intensity ramps up dramatically in the last parts of the book. Thankfully realizations occur, I love you’s are out, and they also completely solve the mystery side before the HEA ending. The epilogue is a year later and it’s not only a great place for them, but it just fits them really well. Kind of a mixed review but what I liked, I really strongly liked in the story, and other parts could be where I am headspace-wise.

This book is great.

It was an amazing surprise. I didn't know anything about the storyline, I only catch that the main characters were a firefighter and a woman who wanted to fix up her great aunt house to put it on the market. What I found was a whirlwind of emotions, mysteries to solve, and a characteristic seaside town, that made me forget everything else.

"The beach was the moodiest of landscapes. It was happy. It was magical. It was raging and hostile. It was somber and sorrowful. It was a place for dreaming and an anchor to stay grounded."

Aurora and Jack don't start their relationship easily, because she just wants to stay alone and hide at the house to lick her wounds, but he sees her true self and he doesn't let her be a hermit. Day after day they easily get into a routine made of odd jobs around the house, strolls on the beach, funny banters and intriguing discoveries, bonding in a way it won't be easy to leave at the end of the Summer.

"Because you see me. And being known is one of the most terrifying and exhilarating senses."

I loved these characters. Jack is a very positive, gentle man, he falls first. Aurora is so gloomy and down she just needs some time to accept her feelings. They are perfect together and their relationship couldn't just be a fling.

Maggie Gates, first time I read her work, delivered a comforting novel. I've really enjoyed the romance, the humour and the spice. Her writing is gorgeous, and even if the book is on the long side the pace is flowing and it never gets boring.

I highly recommend to read 700 Senses of Summer, an ideal beach read.

4.5 stars ✨ a funny, steamy firefighter + forced proximity romance to kick off summer

there’s something about a mmc who’s never cared about relationships before but takes one look at her and is like nope, can’t do casual with her!!! especially when that mmc is jack, a hot, protective, cinnamon roll firefighter with an emotional past that makes him a little too protective at times but also has him willing to lay his feelings out so she’ll give him a chance.

and she is aurora, a former writer who now has a seemingly permanent case of writer’s block and is spending her summer in her great aunt’s decrepit old house which is conveniently right next door. aurora was so black cat girlfriend and so resistant to love but jack did not give up (girlies with abandonment issues wya). the friendships in this book are everything too and it’s truly just such a well-balanced read to get you in the mood for summer.

📖 700 Senses of Summer by Maggie Gates
📚 book 2 • the Romantics series

📝 mini blurb:
Aurora Whitlock is broke, newly singled, and completely blocked from writing another book after her last one became a best seller.

She heads to Cedar Island to fix up her dead great-aunt’s property (a novel cliché), intent to sell it when it’s ready.

Enter Jack Wharton, the sexy firefighter who lives next door and won’t take no for an answer, continuously showing up to help with renovations.

As much as she tries to fight her growing attraction, these two are completely drawn to each other immediately.

✨ Beach Town
✨ Firefighter x Author
✨ Neighbors to Lovers
✨ Mystery to Solve
✨ He Falls First
✨ Hurt x Comfort
✨ Author Girl Gang

Okay this is the beach read you need this summer. I swear I could not put this book down. Like I straight up devoured it. Aurora and Jack had the best chemistry and tension from their very first encounter (spoiler alert: she wack him with a 🍆 toy) 😂
She is down on her luck and in her career and fixing up her Kate aunts house and he happens to be her hot firefighter neighbor.
Oh and he is down bad from the begining. I love that Jack supports Aurora and gives her a chance to grow and heal all while being the strength at her back.

And did I mention their chemistry. Well it’s 🥵🥵🥵

Plus Aurora has the best gangs of author besties and I love them all. This is such a goodreads that’s easy to get lost in and I cannot wait for the next book!

This was solid 3 star read. Low angst, low drama, sweet story.

💕 no third act break up
🗣️. Communication - no miscommunication; these two were honest with each other from the beginning
👩🏻‍🤝‍👨🏼. Aurora (Wander) Whitlock is a published author struggling after bad breakup and losing her agent/book deal. She arrives in North Carolina to restore her great-aunts house. Jack is a firefighter who lives next door and is immediately taken with her. He lost his brother years ago and fears loving and losing another close family member so he steers clear of relationships. Both are likable but her resistance was a bit annoying.
🫣. No OW/OM drama. She hasn’t been w anyone since her terrible ex; Jack used to be a player yrs ago but not for a while.
🌶️🌶️They both admittedly want each other but she is worried that she’ll hurt him by leaving if they get together. They do anyway and try to make the best of it for the summer.
🏠. There are mysteries w the house, as she discoveries clues left by her great aunt.
👥. Dual POV; HEA; marriage one yr later in epilogue

Aurora (Roar, Wander, Colorado) moves in next to Jack to restore the big old house for the summer and Jack is immediately there to help her. Over time they develop a friendship where he stops by in the morning to check on her after his shift at the fire house and then returns later in the day to help her with the house. She is feisty and resists his help at first and doesn’t understand his need to be there. He feels differently for her than he has for anyone else - compelled to help her and continue to show up, even tho he’s afraid of relationships. She resists the tension between them for a long time, not wanting to hurt him, and convinced that she’s leaving at the end of the summer. They get together around 60% but she still insists it’s just for the summer while he keeps pushing for more.

After a disastrous fire at her house, she realizes that she’s crazy to keep pushing Jack away and it’s smooth sailing from there.

There’s growth for each of them as she rebuilds herself after feeling like a flop and learning to write again and he realizes that he can be protective but still open himself up to love.

Why only 3 stars- something was missing; both were likable, especially Jack. Her reluctance annoyed me bc it made no sense. She had nowhere else to go and a job she could do anywhere so what was the problem??? Why was she hell bent on leaving? The conflict wasn’t really believable. He also was all in from the beginning so the whole - I’m too protective and scared to love - thing didn’t really make any sense. I just wasn’t feeling it for some reason. I mean, I just read it and I’m already having trouble remembering it. :/

- hot firefighter
- strong smart feisty FMC
- forced proximity; they live next door
- no third act breakup
- cute nicknames
- mysterious house/weird dead relative

Favorite parts
- her friends - and fellow writers; his friend, Drew
- when Jack was injured and she rushed to the hospital
- whenever she freaked out, he wouldn’t let her get away with it and would find her and talk it through
- when he got mad when she and her writer friends had a fire on the beach and threw her over his shoulder
- finding all the little A’s around the house
- how he redid her bedroom and had a special desk engraved for her
- when he saved her from the house fire at the end
- the honeymoon in Finland

700 Senses of Summer by Maggie Gates
4/5⭐
2,5/5🌶️

I fell in love with Maggie's writing after reading Seven of Hearts a few months ago, and this latest book just solidified that love! The story is simple yet engaging, with super relatable and easy-to-root-for characters. I appreciated how naturally the relationship between the main characters developed. There were no annoying miscommunications or those usual third-act breakups. Instead, I felt comforted and warm while reading, and the little mystery woven into the plot added just the right touch to keep things interesting.

Aurora is in a tough situation—she's stuck dealing with debts piled up from her ex, and to make matters worse, she's hit a writing block after her big bestseller. So when her mom inherits a house in a charming beach town, Aurora decides to renovate and sell it. That’s when she meets Jack, her neighbor, and a firefighter. Their chemistry is electric from the start, and they agree to a no-strings-attached deal while she’s in town.

I was all in for Jack and Aurora's banter! Their banter was a highlight for me, and I loved how honest they were with each other. Aurora is hesitant about falling for Jack since she plans to leave, while Jack feels their connection is something special. He’s upfront about his feelings but never pressures her, and it’s clear he’s her biggest cheerleader. Seriously, the sweet things he does for her made my heart melt! Plus, I adored Aurora's friendships with Willow and Whitney. Even from afar, they offer her such amazing support.

Overall, I loved this book! It’s light, spicy, filled with great characters, and has a hint of mystery. I can see this as a perfect beach or summer read. Honestly, I can’t wait to jump into the next book in the series!

I absolutely DEVOURED this book from start to finish (and in less than 24 hours… I could NOT put it down)😩🫶🏼 it gave me such nostalgic feels of when I used to read like Sarah Dessen books specifically in the summer in junior high because the vibes were immaculate. This story was like summertime in a bottle, and I was absolutely eating it up🥰

I had such an amazing time with Aurora and Jack (ugh this man… IM IN LOVE), and they made me wanna go to a coastal island to renovate an old house with a ghost asap!! 🙂‍↕️ I thought Aurora was such a fun FMC to explore, and watching her overcome her writers block. And JACK… don’t even get me started on how perfect that man is cuz I’ll never shut up!!

“I knew right then and there that I wouldn’t survive Aurora Whitlock. She wasn’t a firecracker. She was a nuclear bomb that would rip me atom from atom.”

Maggie Gates writing just soothes me.

And Jack the hot firefighter next door was also nice.
Book boyfriend yep

This series feels fun.
Three authors. Book cliches.

Aurora
She got the dead aunt beach house restoration trope
Also the writers block

I loved the treasure hunt.

As always with Maggie’s books we get realistic twists.

A cute, romantic read with a side of treasure hunt! You could feel the chemistry between Jack and Aurora’s characters and they made for an emotional and fun read. The plot had a nice mix of elements (romance, mystery, adventure) that kept things interesting. Thankfully, the pet names in this book were far less cringe-worthy than in book one. That said, the epilogue was a bit of a letdown…definitely could’ve used more.

Alright Willow, you’re up next!

🎧Audiobook Review🎧
Dual narration
Narrated by Anthony Palmini and Rose Dioro

I'm going to start off by saying I 100% finished this incredible audio in one sitting! I couldn't put it down. Each of these narrators did such a fantastic job capturing these characters! Anthony Palmini as a protective firefighter who is down bad for his neighbor! Need I say more? With a southern accent!!! Anthony did such an amazing job bringing Jack’s charm and tenderness to life! Rose Dioro's performance for Aurora was so much fun! She brought out Aurora’s wit and vulnerability so beautifully. The way Rose captured Aurora’s growth and the feelings she had for Jack was so well done! These two together were absolute perfection. The chemistry between their performances as Jack and Aurora couldn’t have been better! Maggie did such a great job casting them!

Book review:
Being in Maggie Gates’ worlds will forever be some of my favorite places to visit. Her vivid descriptions make every setting feel so real, pulling you straight into the story. And as if that wasn’t enough, she also fills those worlds with such heartwarming characters that you can’t help but fall in love with.

The main characters, Jack and Aurora, had me absolutely hooked from the start. Their playful banter and chemistry was so much fun and balanced out the beautifully vulnerable moments between these two so well! It was the perfect balance of fun, HOT as hell, and tender.

About the book:
This book follows Jack and Aurora. Aurora is new to town, only planning to stay long enough to help fix up her great-aunt’s beach house before moving on. Jack, on the other hand, is deeply rooted in the community as one of the local firefighters. Their worlds couldn’t be more different, yet from the moment they meet, there was an instant connection! And poor Jack couldn’t stay away! He found himself trying to help her out in any way he could, whether she wanted his help or not he was always offering. Small gestures quickly grew into SO much more!

I fell instantly in love with Jack's character. He was so unbelievably charming, with the most tender and protective heart. I adored that he knew from the very beginning he would fall for Aurora. It was the perfect “he falls first” trope. And the way Maggie wrote this sweet man’s feelings for the FMC was absolutely perfect, filled with such sincerity that it had me absolutely swooning.

Man, can Maggie write a strong female lead! She has given me some of my all-time favorite female main characters, tied in with the absolute best girl gangs that are always so much fun to witness! Aurora's character was the perfect balance of strong and vulnerable. And I loved the way this feisty woman melted for Jack! I truly can't blame her! I absolutely loved her witty comebacks with Jack and the way he just rolled with it!

I can't wait to go back and listen to the first book in this series!! I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend the audiobook! If you are looking for a playful summer read full of witty banter and delicious chemistry, this book is for you!

I have said this so many times, but I will forever keep repeating myself until all my friends read her books! YOU NEED MAGGIE'S BOOKS IN YOUR LIFE!

Very much a sweet beachside romance! While I did find Aurora a bit unlikable and just downright rude at times, it was nice to watch her progression as she overcame her internal battles. Jack was green flags all the way, but his personality was a bit one-dimensional and fell flat past the whole "cinnamon bun" trope. The side characters were the stars of this book, and I really wish we got to see more of them!

This story follows Aurora and Jack. Aurora, a struggling author battling writer’s block and reeling from her ex’s betrayal, decides to escape to her family’s beach house with plans to renovate and sell it. What she doesn’t expect is to become captivated by the secrets hidden within the house and even more intrigued by her neighbor, Jack, a protective and obsessive fireman.

This was such a great audiobook! I loved the narration, so I highly recommend picking it up in this format.

Starting with Aurora, I really admired how she stuck to her guns when it came to the friends-with-benefits arrangement. She set the rules and made it clear to Jack that she was only in town for the summer. But Jack slowly broke through her walls helping, supporting, and ultimately falling in love with her.

I laughed out loud at the moment when he broke into the house, and I adored how all of Aurora’s best friends immediately took Jack’s side. The bath tub scene had me screaming and the mouth on that man is delicious.

Overall, I really enjoyed the character-driven storyline and how much depth it gave to both Aurora and Jack.

This one was a Proofread for me. BUT....

Omg, it was so good! Warning, do not read the week before your period starts if you're easily brought to tears that week! I cried more than once in this book and was literally sobbing at one part in particular!

Aurora and Jack are both so easy to fall in love with. They're complex and dynamic characters who are both very lovable, even when they're a little grumpy. Aurora is so witty, her comebacks are fast and perfect. The banter, not just between the two main characters, but with the side characters too, is so funny and feels very realistic. And the house that Aurora is renovating throughout the book feels very much like a character itself. Jack is just the epitome of book boyfriend!

The story was perfectly paced. It was told beautifully and I could hardly put it down. I just had to know what was going to happen and there was never a dull moment. It hooks your right from the beginning and the hooks never stop!

The details are EVERYTHING in this book! So many sweet moments between Aurora and Jack because of the details. Perfection!

Cute little firefighter romance but it was SO CHEESY. Why did all the girls first and last names start with W 💀😭 ?!? Brutal.

Good spice and some sweet moments. I could have done without the weird side plot of the goose chase her wacky aunt sent her on with branded letters. Like the last one with the key inside that was all the way up in the fireplace where you couldn’t find it unless the literal house burned to the ground???? LOL what on earth. Also her mom had the personality of a plain cardboard box.

ANYWAYS I don’t regret reading it but I likely won’t read the rest of the series.

Hello yes I immediately fell in love with Jack and I make no apologies.

I loved everything I was given in this book.
Trying to get a handle on emotions, dealing with grief, small town vibes, fantastic banter, a dirty mouthed MMC, and even a mystery to be solved.

My man Jack falls first, and damn does he fall hard.
I adored that he was so respectful of her feelings and her reservations - that doesn't mean that this man won't play dirty.
Some of the things this man said had me in a puddle on the floor 🥵🥵
He's a book boyfriend come to life (in Aurora's world) and I will swoon over him forever.

Aurora is a homebody who just wants to mend her broken heart, fix up her great-aunt's house, and get the hell out of dodge ASAP.
Watching her open up to Jack and eventually trust and love him was truly heart warming.

"We were identical magnets, repelling but still feeling the energy pulsing between us"

One message that truly gripped me within this story was the idea that you can grieve so many things; not just the death of a loved one. It could be the death/loss of an item, an ideal, or even a career.
Not only that, but Jack's experience with grief allows him to acknowledge the fact that grief is not a structured concept. It does not follow a timeline. It becomes a part of you and never truly goes away.
I felt that in my soul, and he said some hella good lines that really touched and resonated with me.

"'Grief doesn't negate joy. The exist in tandem. You can mourn parts of your life and still celebrate the beautiful parts.' She was the beautiful part."

This was a truly heartwarming and wholesome read.
I've got to go back and read the rest of Maggie's work!
Can't wait for the next one!

AUDIO REVIEW

🌟:4.5 🌶️:2 🎙️:5

If you want a cozy summertime romance with a cozy little mystery and all of the feels, this is the audio for you!

Maggie blends so many different elements and tropes together beautifully in a stunning display of her gorgeous writing. Her characters are so relatable and the love between them is so real and captivating. I loved Aurora and Jack together, their romance was so sweet to watch bloom and turn into an undeniable connection between two souls destined for each other. They had me laughing, swooning, sweating (hello spicy scenes), tearing up, and gripping whatever was close to me in suspense. Their love is truly everlasting. I couldn’t put this down, and I loved every single word.

This is my first contemporary romance narrated by Anthony Palmini, and he knocked this one out of the park!! He’s fantastic in fantasy books, but I learned through listening to this, that his versatility knows no bounds. His voice was melodic, and had me totally transfixed. But speaking of melodic voices, he had Rose Dioro as his co-narrator, and I knew she was going to be amazing as Aurora. She’s a top narrator for me, and she simply just can’t narrate a bad book. These two together created magic with this story and these characters, and definitely recommend picking this up if you want an audio with the best summer vibes and an intimate romance story you can get lost in. 💕

Love love love !!!!! No complaints, the story was so fun and the mystery sub plot was actually fun and not like so crazy that I got annoyed, like a very very very low stakes outer banks with more romance, and it took place in a little NC beach town ?!?! This had me researching beach properties in the Carolina’s lol. So fun, so cute, so perfect for a quick summer read. Also convinced I need to marry a firefighter
