Night Terror

Rate this book
Sequel to the Amazon Bestseller Night Chill.

Ten years after her abduction and near-sacrifice to the Source, Sarah Tremont struggles to be a normal teenager. As much as she’s tried to suppress the power inside of her, it’s grown dangerously strong and has drawn the attention of those who want to possess her power for themselves.

The nightmare that she thought was long over starts again as powerful forces descend upon Prescott City to seek her out. With help from her parents and Joseph Lonetree, Sarah must stand up to an evil much more powerful than the one she faced in the caves a decade earlier. But in the end, she discovers the greatest danger might come from the power living inside of her.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. No other consideration was offered, expected or received.

I want to start with my LOVE for this cover. It is what caught my attention originally when I was asked to be part of this blog tour. It says so much and, at the same time, leaves you wanting to know more.

This book is the perfect sequel to Night Chill and I absolutely loved it. Where the other book had me a little frustrated and confused at first, this one immediately had me hooked, from the very first chapter.

I especially love how Lonetree is described, especially since it's such a contradiction from what the public considers him as: "Since the death of his brother, Lonetree's existence had come to mirror his name. Well, at least the lone part. A tree would imply that he was able to form roots, take hold somewhere and thrive in one spot. But that wasn't him at all. No, anything more than a few days in one place caused him to get antsy. Being a fugitive from the law was a lifestyle that suited him. Don't make friends. Don't stand out. Don't sleep in the same place more than one night."

It is ten years older and Sarah is now 16. Ever since the events that happened in Night Chill, she's been acting as if she is perfectly okay - and even claiming that she has no memory of the things that happened inside the caves. But it is all a lie - she remembers everything!! - and it's a lie that will soon come out to her family.

The way this book began - wow - pulled me in and creeped me out all at the same time. And it showed just how evil this group really is. There is a new evil - a greater evil - and they are on their way to Prescott City, Maryland to get Sarah. And again, her father and Lonetree must protect her.

I read this book in one night - I had to find out what happened for two reasons: 1) I just had to know and 2) there would have been no sleeping without me knowing. This, to me, was more horror than thriller, but I think people who love either genre will really enjoy this book.

Favorite line:
"You know, my grandma complains about my driving too. You sound just like her."
"Very funny."
"No, I'm serious," Sorenson said. "I don't know why I didn't see it before. Every day, you're starting to act more and more like her."
"I can still kick your ass."
"You're kinda looking like her too. I noticed your man-boobs are hanging a little. Just like Grandma's."
"Your grandma has man-boobs?" Lonetree said. "That's just wrong."

Favorite character: Sarah and Longtree. And I must say that I have grown to like her father Jack more than I did in the first story. (In the first one, I felt like sometimes he made wrong decisions that didn't always help with the safety of his family, but in this one, once he realizes what he is up against, he is all focus.)

This is the second book in the Night Chill series. It has been 10 years since Sarah Tremont was abducted. Sarah tells her parents that she does not remember a thing about the Source and the many deaths that took place. This is a lie! Sarah remembers every last detail of what happened that night. Sarah has usual powers and they are growing stronger everyday. The nightmare that Sarah believed was once over, is beginning again. There is an evil woman who is coming to steal Sarah powers. The evil woman names is Mama D. With the help of her parents and ex- Navy Seal John Longtree, they will try and fight this uphill battle to protect Sarah from Mama D. The characters were well developed, which makes the story even stronger. Jeff Gunhus is an excellent writer and storyteller. If you have not read one of his Night Chill books, put it on your list to read. I hope that there is another book in this series.

Gunhus is phenomenal

Ok, so, first book was amazing, just to put that out there. With that said, I was enthralled night terror. I couldn't put it down. Somehow Gunhus made it more terrifying, more gruesome, and more evil. Not sure how, but he did it, and if I could give this book 6 stars out of 5 I would. Hoping to see a third book!

Night Terror is the follow up to one of my favorite horror books, Night Chill.

In the very beginning we follow a few news articles about what has happened since Night Chill, how Lonetree is MIA and there is a manhunt for both him and Sorenson. They went missing (with good reason) and they are wanted.

Then we jump in to today, 10 years later, the anniversary is on us and Jeff pulls no punches with dumping us right in the middle of the horror show. I was quite creeped out right from the beginning. This however is separate (at this point) from the Tremonts, but knowing Jeff’s writing, somehow it is all going to come together and when it is all said I done, I will be wishing I didn’t read it in the dark.

Oh but what better time to settle in with an amazing horror story?

Amazing it was. We are back with the Tremonts. Sarah is now 16 and whatever happened to her down with the source, whatever power she got, it’s stronger. She hasn’t let on to her parents that this is going on and she has been dealing with this on her own since she awoke in the hospital after she was shot.

I’m not going to go any deeper because I don’t want to spoil it for you, but I have to say I loved this in a holy crap that was freaking crazy kind of way. I really like that we got to know Lonetree more. There was a part in the beginning where Lonetree said that he has been like his name since his brother died, a lone tree, except unlike a tree he doesn’t get to put down roots. He’s a fugitive on the run and to many days in one place makes him antsy. There is more to him that that as watch how his relationship with Sorenson started. I really like his character.

May I offer a tidbit of advice do not eat while you are reading any of Mama D’s scenes or an early scene of Lauren in the lab.

That didn’t work out to well for me.

All in all, another absolutely amazing book (where Iowa is mentioned! that always makes me smile) from Jeff Gunhus! I am a loyal fan and will never miss another book he picks out.

If you are brave enough, if you can handle horror that is both the actual gore written on the pages along with the perfect imagery for your mind to go off on your own tangent wondering what horrors are coming next, this is the book for you. That is one thing I love about Jeff’s writing, yes – it is gory and that is creepy to read, but the fear that your own mind races to create along side the written word, that is talent. It’s an excellent mix of both.

5 stars!

Thank you so much for my copy of Night Terror!

Now pardon me as I go check under my bed and in my closet for things that the locks on the doors won’t keep out.

Spoiler alert – Book II of the trilogy

Book I Night Chills. See my review here.

Night Terror starts out with a gruesome and horrifying description of Charlie’s death, making me prepare myself for a frightening and terrifying ride into the unknown evil. I am really looking forward to getting my scare on.

I was surprised at the horrible action from the very beginning, but I rubbed my hands with wicked glee and a gleam in my eye. I want to be terrified, hanging on every work, rapidly turning pages, having to know…to know what comes next.

Lonetree loved fighting the evil that roamed his world, but not Jack. When Jack saw Lonetree, he knew the news had to be bad.

Jack saved his family once with Lonetree’s help, but you kill one evil and another rises in its place. Would he be able to do it again?

Sarah could look into others minds. She did her best to control it. At times it seemed as if it wasn’t her, but someone else making her do things. The threat is back and the danger is real. And they are after Sarah.

“…We can go to the police…”

“…And tell them what? That your daughter with psychic powers is being hunted by a horde of semi immortal cannibals…”

They had been lulled into complacency, feeling as if the danger was over, then a new evil reared its ugly head, a new threat that must be stopped. They are back to where it all started and it makes me wonder when it will end and who will be left standing.

The characters are real to me, as familiar as a long lost friend. I missed them and their struggle to fulfill their desires and save their souls? Sarah’s growth throughout her ordeal is believable and I had a lot of feeling for her. I worried, was scared, was proud and I felt confident she would come out stronger than ever.

Jeff Gunhus’s ability to create tension that builds throughout the story is amazing. The world he builds is so clear it is as if I am there. As I near the end, I am sitting on the edge of my seat, my fingers gripping my Kindle tightly, and my expectations run rampant. I keep thinking the end must be here, but he adds this and that and takes me on a roller coaster ride of terror that won’t let me go.

I love this trilogy…and we know it’s not over. So, Jeff, where is Book III?

I received this ARC in return for an honest and unbaised review.

Now Night Terror is a continuation of Night Chill. The story carries on with the Tremont family in the same game, just different rules. This time Sarah has to be strong and battles against a similar foe by the name of Momma D. I have to admit, the mommy in me comes out whenever children are hurt in stories- the very beginning of this book has one of those scenes that tears at your core. Once you get past that, you're on to the action, as always.

In this book, Sarah's powers develop instead of going dormant and she learns to control them. The problem is, with every use, she leaves a sort of telekinetic trail for the hungry ones to follow, putting everyone in danger. Thankfully Lonetree and Sorenson are there, and they pack a wallop! I won't say anymore than that, but know this: Night Terror Is Good!

The second in this series, and it seems as though there might be a third one coming out one day. This was a great horror story, a little too much blood and guts and gore than I am used to but not so much that it ruined the book for me. I recommend this book for fans of horror.

I received a copy of this book as part of the Xpresso Book Tours Blog Tour.

A lot of times I am skeptical going into a second book with the same characters and the same basic situation. I somehow feel from the beginning that I’m going to be disappointed, especially if I really loved the first book. Thankfully I wasn’t at all disappointed!

Ten years have passed between Night Chill and Night Terror. Little Sarah Tremont is now sixteen years old and the entire Tremont family is trying to put the past behind them. Her older sister Becky decided to attend a boarding school near Baltimore (where she was sent to stay with a family friend at the end of book one). Lonetree and Sorenson are both on the run from the Feds and nothing unusual has happened lately. But we all know the media can’t pass up an opportunity to dredge up the past; so on this ten-year anniversary everything is being brought to the forefront yet again. Lonetree has come out of hiding, which doesn’t bode well for the Tremont family.

Sarah has spent the last ten years lying to her family, friends, and the authorities about what happened that night. She says she doesn’t remember a thing. One minute she was in the hospital waiting on her mom to finish her work and the next she awoke in a hospital bed being treated for a gunshot wound. She doesn’t know how she got there, doesn’t remember anything that happened in the cave, and doesn’t know what became of the men who kidnapped her. The time has come for her to stop lying to her family and admit that not only does she remember, but her “powers” are getting stronger.

A new enemy has emerged, Mama D, and she’s on the hunt for Sarah because of the power she possesses. A strange voice has come to her and promised to make her son “normal” again if she brings Sarah to him. And we all know how the love of a mother can motivate someone.

That high level of character development is still here with this book. Since we learned so much about the Tremonts, Lonetree, and Sorenson in the first book, there isn’t much to expand on; well, except the fact that Sarah is now sixteen instead of six. Despite everything she’s been through I think she’s grown up quite nicely. We actually get into the head of Mama D throughout her journey to find Sarah and learn a thing or two that comes in handy later in the book. Describing her son, Daniel (or Pesh as she calls him), is a little difficult because it will give away some crucial parts of the story. Let me just say that what he is on the outside is not really who he is, but he is that way because of who he is and who inhabits a part of his mind.

The supernatural aspect in this book is a little more fantastical. Beyond myths coming to life… ancient shamans requiring human sacrifice in order to live and feed off their power. Sarah learns more about her own powers and how to control them, but there’s someone else inside her head and that person wants to take over and take all the power.

The ending wraps up this story nicely, but does leave it open to another book down the line and I really, really, really, really hope that there is another one. I would love to see where Jeff Gunhus could possibly take us next with these characters. This story is a little more graphic and gory than the first, and it starts in chapter one with a child being eaten alive by Mama D’s crew. Horror fans will love this book! Again, I have to warn that you make sure you have lots of free time before starting, because once you pick it up, you won’t want to put it down!

A decade ago, the residents of Prescott City, Maryland experienced a minor earthquake - as the result of a massive mine collapse and an expansive sinkhole that opened up in the area. Several people had died in the limestone cave-in, and their loved ones still mourned their deaths. At least, this was the official version of what happened.

However, for a select few members of community, the reality of what actually happened so long ago still haunts them. Sixteen-year-old Sarah Tremont and her family's recovery has been very slow; Sarah was abducted ten years ago by a bloodthirsty cult and very nearly sacrificed to an ancient entity known as the Source. For Jack and Lauren Tremont - Sarah's parents - the knowledge that so many of their friends and neighbors were actually child murderers is horrific, but it is also knowledge they are willing to keep to themselves for the sake of the grieving families who were left behind; as revealing such gruesome information would only cause immeasurable anguish to people who knew absolutely nothing about their loved ones murderous and bloodthirsty double lives.

As far as her parents are concerned, Sarah's memories of her kidnapping and near death were mercifully blocked, and she can't remember anything of what happened to her. The truth is that Sarah remembers every last detail of her abduction and knows that she almost died, but since it eases her parents' minds to believe that Sarah has forgotten such a traumatic event, she is glad to give her parents some peace after what they all survived. In reality, her abduction has awakened an immense power within Sarah, one which she struggles to control to the best of her ability.

Determined not to frighten her parents, Sarah keeps her powers to herself and tries to be a normal teenager. However, as much as she has tried to suppress the power inside of her, it has grown dangerously strong and has drawn the attention of those who want to possess her power for themselves. The nightmare that she once believed was over, begins again as powerful forces descend upon Prescott City to seek her out.

Now, with her parents help and the help of an ex-Navy SEAL named Joseph Lonetree - someone who knows all about the evilness that was unleashed by that mine collapse ten years ago - Sarah must stand up to an evil much stronger and infinitely more powerful than the one she faced in the caves a decade earlier. But in the end, she discovers the greatest danger just might come from the power living inside of her.

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The story was very well-written, although certainly very shocking in some of the imagery that was created. I was completely immersed in the story by the end of the first chapter, and wrapped up in the Tremont family's plight. These characters were so well-developed and I avidly wanted to know what would happen to them next.

Night Terror can be read as a standalone, perhaps, because Night Chill is referenced so strongly; but I think I may have enjoyed reading Night Chill first - although, that's only because I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to reading books in a series. I give Night Terror by Jeff Gunhus a definite A!

Absolutely loved the start of this! It jumps right in! Unlike normal I even read the foreword from Jeff Gunhus (I'm not sure why I don't normally read these but I think I like to keep all ideas of the book for after I read the book so as to not give ANY spoilers) and Jeff had mentioned that this was a book that his wife would not read. I read the first so I know how gruesome Jeff's mind can be but this intrigued me even more than normal. Maybe because I'm a bit crazy and I really like reading morbid stuff but it also left me really curious about what was going to happen to the characters from book one, Night Chill.

From the start Jeff was not kidding. This starts with a small chapter of a ten year old getting eaten, and still being alive to feel it all. This was so gruesome that I even read a portion of it to my hubby! What else are wives for, I mean really?! So as to share the horror and as I delighted in how this began he ran away to go watch football.. oh well!

Now of course a good book is not going to continue with that kind of horror through every page. What I enjoyed was that Jeff was able to keep the momentum although the horrific parts weren't on such a prolific display. He was very tasteful in adding in bits and pieces of horror and gore and then also added in psychological horror. Let's face it, us horror fans need a good mix of both and without the story and characters would just not feel right. Night Terror blends the two perfectly and adds in a little suspense as well, just for fun.

What I enjoyed most was the fact that I had not read Night Chill in nearly a year but there were a few reminders throughout this story but not so much so if I had read the first yesterday I would not have felt bogged down. The reiteration flows beautifully with the plot and actually adds to it.

Getting to know the characters again was the best part of this. I knew they were going to see some serious action and as the tempo ratcheted up I felt for them! I also felt like he did a great job of aging them as this is ten years into their future. I expected them to be a little different from what I remembered, and they were.

Sadly, my only critique was that although the pace was done quite well I did feel a little slowed from what I remember of book two. There were some portions that I just wasn't sure about and wanted to get back to the nitty gritty!

In short: This was an amazing but very gruesome book! Definitely for horror lovers! Must read Night Chill prior to Night Terror or nothing will make sense.

The sequel to Night Chill is just as disturbing, maybe even a little more so. Night Terror takes us ten years into future, after the event that rocked the little town of Prescott to its core. All the key players are there. In this book we hear much more from Sarah, the girl with the gifts. The ‘source’ from the caves turns out not be as gone as we thought and a new group of monsters enter the scene. The source has even stronger allies now, and will stop at nothing to get to Sarah.

This book starts off with the graphic description of a boy who can remember everything back to being born. He is a special child, with a lot of gifts. Then we see that his life is ending in the most disturbing way I can think of. It was sick and I found myself wanting to see who would do such a thing right away. The author introduces us to the main monster, a woman called Mama D. We get all her sad details and learn about her son. We learn why Mama D is pursuing Sarah and how hopeless the situation is for her.

This book also expounds Lauren’s role in all of this. Lauren is Sarah’s mom. Although she learned the truth about her old boss’ side project in the Night Chill, Lauren pursues his research with more caution. In seeking a medical answer for everlasting life and healing in the form of the ‘source’, Lauren is so very close to actually figuring out how to replicate the process. Her scene in the lab ends up being the thing of nightmares. It is something I am sure will be replayed in my mind over and over keeping me awake at night.

This book was non-stop action almost from the first words. I felt like this books was more focused. The author still gives us loads of details in every scene, but we already know the characters. The few characters that are new get special introductions and first person chapters so we really get a good idea of what is going on behind the scenes. Even the bad guys in this book are written so well, they all have at least a shred of redeeming qualities. I enjoyed this book as much as the first one. I recommend you read Night Chill first, you would miss a lot by skipping it. I highly recommend this series. I hope there is more to come.

The book begins by cleverly recapping the events of the previous book via newspaper articles. Ten years have passed and Jack Tremont still lives in Prescott City with his wife Lauren and their daughter Sarah, who can't remember any of the events from ten years ago - or so her parents think. Their oldest daughter, Becky, is in boarding school trying to deal with her own bad memories. Jack and Lauren realize Sarah still has her powers and her memories, on the same day that their old friend Joseph Lonetree warns them that Sarah is in danger from the mysterious Mama D. As Sarah's powers increase and she struggles to control them, Joseph Lonetree and Nick Sorenson fight to keep the Tremont family safe from Mama D and some old enemies who have returned to continue their quest for power.

Night Terror is reminiscent of a Stephen King novel. There is a lot of detail and back-story that, while not really necessary, certainly adds color, depth, and atmosphere. The book is extremely well-written with only a few editing errors, even though I read an ARC. Be warned: this book is not for the faint-hearted. There is a lot of horror and violence, and some of the incidents are very twisted indeed. Mr Gunhus, you certainly have a very sick mind (I love it!). While this story is wrapped up by the end of the book, the author does set us up for the next one. I can see a sequel coming - can't wait!

Even better than the first book.

I received this book in return for an honest review.

Y'know when you're watching a movie and the intense part kicks in. That's when you hear a 'dun-dun-dun' sound. That's the exact sound that went through my mind at the end of this book.
This book left things wide open for another one, but I don't know if i can handle anymore of Huckley. It would have to be outrageous and unheard of to keep my interest much longer. I just feel like he has terrorized enough. Maybe if the story focused on Daniel instead of Sarah, I might be up for more. I think it just needs to switch the focus now.
For me, Lonetree is the one I want to know more about and read more of. He is the star for me. Like, seriously, who wouldn't be intrigued by an ex-SEAL wanted by everyone under the sun?! That's exciting stuff!
At least this story was graphic and gory, and you know I like that in a thriller. The care level was not massive though. Night Chill kept me up at night, this one didn't.
It was a solid story still, and I did like it. Definitely a recommendation to thriller fans too.

It is ten years later and the local newspaper marks the anniversary with a memorial article of those lost in what the town views as a simple cave in. Not only are emotions and memories stirred up within the family of those lost and affected by what really happened in the underground caves, but we find that an evil paranormal entity has just been waiting for Sarah to grow stronger and is now stirring as well.

This is an excellent follow up to Gunhus's Night Chill book. It is just as eerie, chilling, and even harder to put down - if possible - than the first book in this series. Night Terror is scheduled for release on October 1st and currently available for preorder on Amazon for only 99¢. I highly recommend this series to all readers who enjoy things that go bump in the night, especially of the paranormal variety, but I suggest that you may want to turn on some extra lights if reading it at night!
