From tales of chilling horror, to gut-wrenching stories of suspense, WARPED is author Jeff Menapace's ultimate collection of short fiction.
WARPED contains currently published tales of the macabre like "Princess" and "Sugar Daddy," along with previously unpublished work like the author's preferred version of his controversial novella "Torment."
In addition to this, WARPED contains the formerly exclusive prequel shorts to Menapace's acclaimed Bad Games trilogy, "Job Interview" and "Get off My Ass."
Eleven pulse-pounding stories in all for over 75,000 words of entertainment, WARPED includes:
A native of the Philadelphia area, Jeff has published multiple works in both fiction and non-fiction. In 2011 he was the recipient of the Red Adept Reviews Indie Award for Horror.
In March of 2014, his novel BAD GAMES was a #1 Kindle bestseller and is now being optioned as a feature film.
Free time for Jeff is spent watching horror movies, The Three Stooges, and mixed martial arts. He loves steak and more steak, thinks the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the greatest movie ever, wants to pet a lion some day, and hates spiders.
Fantastic collection of Jeff Menapace's weird stories. You can read those stories single (as I did) or best take the whole collection here. Once you start you won't stop reading. I especially enjoyed the two encores here (since I didn't know them so far). In 'The Job Interview' you'll learn how Monica Kemp masters the final hurdle before getting employed (fantastic 'immoral' twist). 'Get Off My Ass' shows a typical traffic situation with a rather uncommon ending. Reading those stories will give you many great hours of entertainment. I can highly recommend this collection!
I grabbed this collection when it was on sale a couple of weeks ago for 99 cents, and I am glad that I did. I enjoyed the author's BAD GAMES series, so I wanted to read more stuff by him. This one is a collection of 9 stories, some longer than others, but all were entertaining.
My favorites were:
Princess: a tragic tale about a girl who is stood up on Prom night. It's not what you're thinking though. It's twisted and quite sad.
Get off my Ass: a tale about road rage. This one introduces the main bad guys from his BAD GAMES series.
Torment: a tale about an Cree Indian bent on revenge, some kids on the way to a cabin and a college professor specializing in myths. Oh, and the Wendigo.
Sugar Daddy and Sugar Daddy 2: this one was about some people out to rob a house in an exclusive neighborhood. From some reason, it reminded me of the Stepford Wives with a wicked element.
And my favorite out of the whole bunch, The Straw Man and a Murder: about an abused little boy and his friend, the scarecrow. For some reason, I loved this one.
Definitely looking forward to more stuff from this author. 4.5 stars rounded to 5 for this site- Recommended!
I’m not too sure how I came across Jeff, but I’m glad I did. This really was an enjoyable anthology and the good stories really were great Some are a bit more forgettable (although not necessarily bad) I did originally rate it 3 stars, but upon reflection it definitely deserves a 4.
The Straw Man and a Murder ☆☆☆ A neglected boy deals with his father’s abuse by making friends with the scarecrow. While this is a pretty generic scarecrow horror story, it does feel imbued with a certain nostalgic homage to the scary flicks of the 80s. It wasn’t anything special, but I’m glad it was the first short story in the anthology because it made it immediately clear that Jeff is a horror fan who is passionate about his craft. Torment ☆☆☆ A group of teenagers find themselves stuck in the woods as a native Indian teams up with a college professor to hunt down the creature endangering everyone. There were a lot of twists and turns to this one and almost all of the quite large cast of characters were written exceptionally well. It’s a bit of a slow burn as far as short stories go, but I feel it paid off well. If you think you know where it’s going, you don’t. Jeremy’s Loss ☆☆☆☆ A young man is approached by a disfigured and mysterious individual after the suspicious death of his mother. I do love the unreliable narrator plot device (no sarcasm intended) especially in short horror fiction. This one is exciting, full of suspense and will leave you questioning everything you read. Get Off My Ass ☆☆☆☆ A road rage incident leads to a bloody altercation. There’s not much I can say without spoiling this one, but it did make me ask myself “when should I stop feeling satisfied about what I’m reading?” haha, anyone who has ever gotten road rage will understand that one, once they read it. Job Interview ☆☆☆☆ A woman visits a dangerous hit man to free herself from domestic abuse. This one was very short, but quite brilliant. It had an ending worthy of a Stephen King short and sticks with you for a while. Sugar Daddy 1&2 ☆☆ A heist planned for a neighbourhood of wealthy widows goes wrong in the worst way possible. I’ll review these two together and I’ll say this. There was a certain point in the first story where it could have ended, and left me pleased. Unfortunately though, it kept going and I soon felt like I was being convinced what I had just read was scary. The catalyst for the incident gave me the spooks because of the mystery involved, but the more that catalyst became a character in its own right, the less I cared. Fish and Biscuits in a Barrel ☆☆☆☆ This one is super short, I literally can’t even tell you what it’s about. I can say though that it is goofy, creative and very clever. Loved it. Five Card – Draw! ☆☆☆ A husband and wife play a dangerous game of cards. Well at least this justifies the name of the anthology, this one was pretty Warped haha. Business is Business, James ☆☆ Another flash fiction. Not much to advise or reflect on. This one is a story you could tell over a few mouthfuls of beer at a bar to get a laugh. Not bad by any means, but nothing special. Just a potent snippet of the Jeff Menapace style. Princess ☆☆☆☆☆ A man finds himself caught in a battle between what is right, and his deeply disturbed wife after the tragic loss of their daughter. This was easily the best story of the bunch, and perhaps one of the best short stories I’ve ever read in the horror genre. Seeing a familiar story told through the eyes of not the victim, but one of the captors is a fresh take and one that paid off really well. Somehow in a story of life and death, I was equally interested in which side would win out in the husband’s moral crisis. Also, super creepy man. Seriously.
Jeff Menapace is a fantastic horror writer, and I hope he has some other anthologies for me to check out.
The Straw Man and A Murder - My favourite. I really like to read about horror which contains Scarecrow. Somehow it mesmerised my vision about it. Don't know hiw to describe that feeling but all I can say whenever I find something horror read of Scarecrow I just dig that out...
This liitle piece of work no exception from that. Although it was too quick read but I loved it very much. Thomas has the habit of drawing Scarecrow that sitted in his father's corn field to get rid of crows. Instead that Scarecrow didn't seem to scare crows but make them come around it. Thomas like to draw that Scarecrow and also feeds all those crows. This made very angry to his father Hunter. He violently beat him and didn't show any mercy. It was all the boy could take. So what happened after that was neither his father or me was really aware of. That was really something to read. I absolutely fu**ing loved it...
5 from me...
Business is Business, James - Another favourite little lit from this book. Jen couldn't stand with those abusive beating which her husband done to her. So she hired someone andy pay him to kill her husband to end it all from her life. But what she didn't know even though she paid that person who might kill her husband there's a little gap between trust and business. Which Mr. Smith knows very when it comes all about business and James. Freaking awesome read that was...
Torment - Jesus! What the hell was that for? Totally breathtaking read, didn't expect it to come at the end. The story almost put me off guard amd took my breath away...
Tim, Andy, Rachel and Michelle they all in the ride in a car going for spend some good time all by themselves, when all of a sudden they spotted a little child being tied with a tree. The main game of the story started from then. Professor Jon and Kane who happened to appear in the scence after they took the girl in their hostage, Tim at the spot could sense something terribly wrong about those two strangers. Well he was almost got them but couldn't put the right finger about their motive and reason. That's all I can say about this story without giving out any spoiler. But hell it was 100% too much intense to read and nevertheless the fact of gore horror I enjoyed wholly from first to last. Highly recommending this short tale from the responsible author...
Another 5 from me...
Fish and Biscuits in a Barrel - Wow, wow, wow!! The more I read the more I liking this short tale packed book. The story began with a man named Benny who happened to be a worker in a fish market. He is a man who does not like cat. So when a black cat with yellow eyes shown in to his he didn't hesitate but immediately uses his three legged little Labrador dog Moby to fetch after that cat. Benny had no idea what is coming toward him as for the action he was taking against that black cat, or had he??
Sugar Daddy I - The deep sh**t that was. Totally outstanding short tale to enjoy myself. Didn't expect it at all like that. I was so dumbfounded at the time while reading the story. No regret of completing it...
Adam Kale writes a horror story and share it by reading to the audience and all ot them liked his super unique but at the same terrific story. Though he didn't finished with main character thus all of them wanted to know the ending. In there on the audience side there's something was waiting for him. In the mean time there's happened to be a rich house that his friends Kevin, Tony and Uncle Fred wants to rob something expensive elements from it. But all they see at the first glance whrn they entered in the house was a hanging man in a cage and there's a woman called Susan lived here. While also Emma Adam's girlfriend with him present at the spot they didn't know what's really going on. The more they wait the more they were risking their precious time...
Sugar Daddy II - The sequence go more intense and more terrifying. Adam aka Alex the horror aurhor thought the dark past of his been gone for forever. But he wqs wrong, he was just terribly, terribly wrong about his own statement about it. Because 'The Sugar Daddy' is back and he yet to lewve him for alone. This time he made him a choice to think of. If Alex refuses the choice his dear mom's life would be in great danger. If he choose the his side well who knows what outcome may shown while he did it. Better thing to consider but he got no choice. I didn't feel like it was an average short horror. But even it was too short and sequel of the first part it got its all elements of horror to scare the shit out of you for sure. Best sequel part I ever including the first part too. Highly recommended from my side. Thanks to the author for this mind freaking experience of read...
Five Card - Draw - A couple hating each other too much. Not wanting each other's company anymore they settled themselves over a five card game. What happened after was something you really gonna enjoy it. Such a little short story but got all it's total ecstasy of it. Just loved it...
Princess - O-M-G! What was that? Seriously I just couldn't get enough of it. I would say it was a mind game horror short tale that will blow your mind. There's just no stopping when you get the real vibe of this book...
While reading the tale at starting it was bit of confusing to process in your brain. The confusion continues for few couple of pages in the story. But after that the think became more clear and you could find out the real reason of that confusion...
Samantha was the daughter of John Kearns and her wife Tammy kearns. While I really felt deeply sorry for the boy who been kidnapped by John and make the boy name him Josh for some cruel reason. So when the story begins and more I go deep into the story the more I find it impossible not to ignore but finish it. It was breathtakingly creepy, high with tensed atmosphere and of course a bit of confusing. The ending is all that you needed to read as it was the main game changer of that whole short story. I liked that ending part that what John did I strongly believe it should be happen as like story like that. Then again for me it was mind blowing experience...
Total 5...
Jeremy's Loss - Another blast from Jeff Menapace. Till the end I had to attach to the story to find out the real twist of it and glad to say it was so worth reading...
Jeremy just lost his mother in a tragic accident was almost sober with drink until he met a guy named Fallon. The guy at first was total stranger to him. But when the guy make some sense while talking with him it was all Jeremy could do but wandering himself. The things continued with him as Falon revealed something shocking to Jeremy that his mom wasn't dead because of that accident but there's someone else for the reason behind her accident. The ending though really blown my mind off. The ecstasy of this short fiction definitely would give you total entertainment of pleasure. Thumbs-up for this tale to the author...
Job Interview - Monica Kemp was in an interview where she's been questioning before she got her job. The immediate later after few questions she would face a very bizarre experience. But she shouldn't be afraid if she wants her desired job...
Get Off My Ass - No regret about this short yale either. Wish could read more of it...
Arthur was driving in the car with his mom when a boy named Kyle Bonnar and her girlfriend Amber Calloway charged them with horn of their car. Arthur from his mom's request pull over his car aside and met them face to face. While the conversation didn't go well as expected but Arthur let them go but for next time. As he was eager to go home by skipping ice-cream eating schedule with his mom to meet his brother Jim. From there he would decide what should be done to them. Loved it...
This was an exciting collection of stories from a very talented writer. Jeff Menapace doesn't shy away from blood and violence in a story like "Sugar Daddy", but he can also deliver the dark humor, as in "Fish and Biscuits in a Barrel". Another standout story is "The Straw Man and a Murder", which takes a horror movie concept and injects it with a touch of sympathy and compassion to create a satisfying story of revenge. And then there's "Princess", which features a mother who is truly "Warped". We even get two bonus stories in which we see Monica, Arty and Jim from the "Bad Games" series. I enjoyed this collection and I look forward to reading more of Jeff Menapace's work soon.
Another fantastic gem from the twisted mind of Jeff Menapace. He sets the stage in the intro as envisioning this book as a mix between fine dining and fast food. However, I treated it more as a buffet and consumed as much as I could in one sitting. The 11 stories are unrelated to each other, but they are all fantastic inclusions in this tome. Here's hoping Warped Vol 2 comes out eventually!
It had several interesting stories, but I just could not get in to the book. Usually a book like this will take me one day to read. It has taken me a week because I was bored with most of the stories.
Jeff Menapace is a great writer, this is just not one of his best.
A lot of work has gone into this collection and I know it is greedy of me to want more but I do! An excellent writer giving us some extraordinary yet totally believeable characters who we either love or love to have. Can't wait for more from Jeff Menapace!
Loooved this book. My only problem is that it wasn't longer. I was silly enough to start it before bedtime; I stayed awake all night until I'd read the last page. Now off to buy my next Menapace book..
Every single story in here was amazing but my absolute favorite was the mannequin one. I'd have given this collection 5 stars just for that one story! Seriously, Jeff is such a good storyteller!
This book was not for me. But I give credit where credit is due and the writing is excellent and the short stories are insane. I did enjoy The Scarecrow and the Murder but after that it was just too many 'WTF am I reading right now' moments for me.
A really fun read of short stories by JM. Not short of laughs, as well as a fair share of violence these stories are really good and well worth reading. Great fun!!!
The really short stories are great. The longer short stories are really great. Finishing the book realizing I've run out of cool tales of terror...not so great.
Menapace reminds me of Stephen KIng and I enjoyed this little short story anthology. The best stories are the one about the Wendigo and the vampire with the monkey kids.
Excellent collection of short stories, these stories get right inside your head and stay there, every one was new to me, I want to read more by the author now.
