I started reading A Mouse Called Julian for my baby still in my womb (nearly 8 months) as a story time on 5/31/2019 and finished it that same day. My baby has been active and kicked me a lot and I like to read books out loud to her everyday. My son is now 7 and able to read this book on his own. We both liked this story a lot. I personally love books written and illustrated by this author, Joe Todd-Stanton. I have been lucky to have given the chance to review all of his books: Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx, Arthur and the Golden Rope, and The Secret of Black Rock and I love them all so much! The illustrations are awesome and it keeps kids active when they read or when parents read for them. I love this author’s attention to detail in his illustration.
In this book, readers will follow Julian as he informs readers that he likes to live alone. He will avoid everyone above and below ground as best as he can, but he doesn’t know that a fox has been watching him. When Julian sleeps, the fox breaks into Julian’s house, but since the entrance of his house is small, the fox is stuck. While the fox is stuck, Julian decides to share his dinner with the fox and surprise that he actually enjoys having a guest. The next day when the fox able to pull himself out, they both go back to how their lives were before. Julian goes about his day dodging everyone, but this time, he’s not so lucky and finds himself face to face with a barn owl. Hoping his newfound friendship with the fox may come in handy, otherwise he will have to rethink about making friends.
A Mouse Called Julian is an excellent read and beautifully illustrated. I love that the fox in this case is honest when he asks Julian to help him out and that he will not try to eat him. It’s the best story for little kids to practice trusting and helping honest strangers who actually need help. Though in this case, the fox did tried to eat Julian for the reason of breaking into his home so it’s a hard decision to make. I like the bit of humor in the end when the fox has a chance to pay back Julian for his kindness. I highly recommend everyone to read this book and all other books from this author.

Julian the mouse is unashamedly a bit of an introvert; he's an elective recluse who's perfected the art of avoiding others - and for good reason too: above ground things try to eat him and below it, well, folk just seem to get in his way (poor little fellow). Understandably then, he's got his mind quite made up: living alone is exactly how he likes it. That is, until an unexpected guest appears for dinner one day forcing him with a choice to make. Will he return to his old routine, or will he perhaps instead learn that maybe, every now and again, having a friend to share with isn't all that bad?
Joe Todd-Stanton has done it again, with this beautifully illustrated and boldly reimagined reversal of the classic Aesop fable of The Lion and the Mouse.
A Mouse Called Julian is a charming, humorous and comforting tale of friendship and I can see it quickly becoming a new favourite in our household. Brilliant.

A story about an unlikely friendship that would be a brilliant focus book in KS1.
I loved the illustrations in this book.

Kniha vyniká najmä jemne atypickými situáciami a kresba, kedy je líška zaseknutá v diere hlavu a zadok je trčí, je asi ten najlepší obrzáok, aký som kedy videla v detskej knihe. Páči sa mi, že kniha nešla do možno očakávaného záveru, že odvtedy už myšiak vyhľadával susedov, ale že občasne sa stretáva so svojím známym lišiakom.

Wow, wunderschön! Eins der schönsten Bilderbücher, die ich je gesehen habe! Der Autor/Künstler hat sich stark an Ghibli inspirieren lassen, was man auch deutlich angesehen hat. Ich hab mich total in die Zeichnungen und die niedliche Freundschaftsgeschichte zwischen einem Fuchs und einer Maus verliebt.

What a beautiful story! What drew me to choose this book was the beautiful illustrations but the story itself was also so fun and so engaging, with an important message about friendship and kindness. This is definitely one I will be purchasing to share with my future class.

Julian the mouse had always lived on his own and that was how he liked it. The animals above ground wanted to eat him and the ones below ground got in his way, so he had learned how to avoid them all. But then a fox got stuck in his window after it tried to smash its way through to eat him.
The artwork is beautiful and the story a cute one of realizing that sometimes you like the company of others. I was intrigued by the idea that this was a book that sort of championed the attributes of an introvert. But I think Julian goes beyond introversion to being anti-social. In my understanding, introverts (and I consider myself one) don’t dislike being around other people, but definitely aren’t energized by a party situation. I asked my teenage daughter (another who likes her alone-time) and she loved the story. She said 5 stars, I say 4; so together we’re a vote for 4.5 stars on this beautiful little book.

Dit prentenboek straalt alles uit om een blijvende favoriet te worden van jonge kinderen. Een muisje met grote oren kijkt je vanaf het omslag koddig aan. Je ziet een holletje onder een boom als huisje en een spiedende vos met grote ogen.
Julius Muis woont alleen in zijn holletje onder een grote boom. Dit vindt hij fijn. Er wonen meer muizen in de buurt, maar die ontwijkt hij liever, net zoals de dieren boven de grond of de boerin met haar hond. Hij weet waar hij op moet letten zonder gevaar te lopen. Maar wat hij niet weet, is dat hij in de gaten gehouden wordt. Een dier met grote ogen. Dat dier, de vos, denkt een lekker muisje te scoren. Als de vos ’s nachts Julius denkt te verrassen blijft hij met zijn grote snuit in het kleine hol muurvast zitten.
Julius heeft geen andere keus dan de vos te helpen om los te komen, wat geen eenvoudige opgave is voor zo’n kleine dappere muis! Vele pogingen later steekt de snuit van de vos nog steeds door het gat. Julius heeft medelijden. Hij deelt zijn eten met de vos, laat zijn menselijke kant zien. De vos ziet in dat samen eten leuker is dan de ander op te eten. En Julius vindt het stiekem leuk dat er een gast is. Zo ontluikt een vriendschap. Door een goed plan van het muisje wordt de vos de volgende dag bevrijd. Julius is weer alleen en terug bij af. Totdat een ander gevaar op de loer ligt. Komt het goed?
Een warm, ontwapenend verhaal dat rust uitstraalt door kleurkeuze en de sfeervolle mooie tekeningen. De schutbladen zijn zoals kinderen tekenen en Julius het ervaart. In het verhaal zie je hoe het werkelijk is. De inrichting van het huisje straalt geborgenheid uit, met zelfs een plattegrond aan de muur om niet te verdwalen. Vele herkenbare details zoals potloodstompjes, een veiligheidsspeld of een klosje garen. Het verschil tussen dag en nacht, het perspectief groot t.o.v. klein in bijv. de muis en de vos of de paardenbloempluisjes en de lieveheersbeestjes, het beeld boven en onder de grond, aan alles is veel aandacht besteed.
‘Wie niet sterk is moet slim zijn’ of ‘Wie goed doet goed ontmoet’ zijn een paar uitdrukkingen die in beeld en taal zijn verwerkt of o.a. tegenstellingen in voorzetsels.
Julius Muis laat met dit verhaal zien dat alleen zijn ook goed of fijn is en dat mag zijn, maar het soms ook goed is om iets samen te doen. Als je je openstelt voor nieuwe dingen ontmoet je anderen en ervaar je mooie momenten. Je bent er voor elkaar als het nodig is. Een prentenboek dat alles in zich heeft: herkenning, taalschat, woordbegrip, humor, repetitie, emoties, fantasie, een vlotte voorleestekst en heel veel kijk- en ontdekplezier door de mooie illustraties die ook zelf het verhaal vertellen!

Sagribējās atkal vakaros mini stāstiņus ar meitu. Bērnu grāmatas esot veselīgi lasīt visos vecumos. 😉😄
Šī ir kārtējā sirsnīgā grāmata par draudzību un kopā būšanu.
Pelēnu grib apēst lapsa, kurai "nesaiet" ar pelēna mājas iebrukumu un atgadās Vinnijs Pūks divi. 🫢😅 Tad nu atklājas, ka reizēm vienatnes mīļotājiem arī ir jauki ar kādu ik pa laikam papļāpāt un padraudzēties. Reizēm draugi var kļūt arī tie, kas sākumā tādi nemaz nešķiet. Un vecā pasaules patiesība, ka labie darbiņi uzlabo mūsu karmu un atmaksājas.

I feel like after reading Joe Todd-Stanton's other picture books, A Mouse Called Julian is a lot less to chew on than those previously. Though the wholesome humour is still there, and a little bit of peril, it doesn't feel as much as a treat than the others - perhaps because it's a different subject matter. I can still see kids enjoying this regardless.

This one is just insanely nice with a well-written story, lovely illustrations, layout and typography and a great sense of humour. I know I would have loved it as a child as well and could have spend ages looking at the details like the cross section of the burrows. I also love how it's a story about friendship but in the end they "still liked to keep to themselves" !

Julian is a mouse who tries to mind his own business, especially because the animals bellow the ground are in his way and the ones above try to eat him.
He follows his routine pretty well, until a fox gets stuck in his hole and is not able to get out.
And that is how the relationship between them grows! ❤❤

I love everything about this, as per usual with Joe Todd-Stanton's books, but I think my favorite little detail might be the differences in the front and back endpapers. ...Especially the bit with the owl frowning in its bush whilst being heckled by some crows.

4,25 🌟 cet auteur vraiment >>> j’aime trop ses dessins et l’histoire est trop chou, ça m’a fait penser à « Renard et petit Georges » que j’ai lu ce mois-ci aussi. c’est le même type de scénario mais ça marche vraiment bien pour cultiver la tolérance et l’ouverture aux autres chez les enfants!

Een prachtig mooi boek over een introverte muis in een drukke burcht.
Ik zag dit mooie boek bij de bieb, ik heb niet eens gekeken naar de blurb. Nope. Deze meid heeft dit boek puur meegenomen om 2 dingen. De prachtige cover met oranje kleuren en de leuke muis.
Ik heb enorm genoten van dit boek. Ik kon me best herkennen in Julius. Al zou ik niet 24/7 iedereen ontwijken maar wel vaak genoeg. XD Soms vind ik het best gezellig om even te kletsen om mijn baksel te delen.
Ik moest wel lachen om hoe hij zijn eigen routine en plekjes had gevonden om snel van x naar y te lopen zonder iemand of iets tegen te komen, dan ben je echt een introvert. Maar wat als er nu een element op het pad komt dat je niet had verwacht? Zoals een vos. En wat als die vos nou niet eens zo slecht blijkt te zijn (uiteindelijk)? Ik vond dat stuk leuk geschreven en ik moest lachen om de reddingspogingen.
En dan is er nog het einde. Ik dacht, goh, gaat het dan zo saai eindigen? Maar het eindigde op een echt leuke manier.
Ik vond het heerlijk trouwens om te zien wie er in de burcht woonde en wat ze zoal deden door de dag heen. Van lekker eten tot verhaaltjes voor het slapen tot schattige baby konijntjes. Echt zo leuk!

This book is adorable and so well done.
