This is a fantastic book filled with drama, intrigue and a sweet love story!

Alice Spencer is someone who doesn't know her own worth. She is caring, compassionate and protective of those she loves. Rob is a knight in shining armor! Even when his body is broken, he comes to the rescue. Belle is a haunted and hunted woman. Her past keeps trying to catch up with her.

I liked all of the life lessons that many of the characters learned. My favorite quote is : "God sees you, Alice. Maybe He didn't give you the answer you asked for, but He's never abandoned you. He's never stopped watching over you." I needed this reminder in my own life.

I was provided a complimentary copy of the book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a tumultuous journey Rob and Alice had to go on to finally find their way back to each other. I hadn’t read the prequel novella but had read the previous novels in the series, so I knew that Alice was a steady caretaker of her family. What became clear in this story was that she was often overlooked by her siblings and that her feelings did not seem to matter to them.

But her feelings and her care mattered greatly to Rob. From the earlier books, I did not realize how much Rob actually loved Alice and that she was the reason he joined the wagon train. His heart for her was tender and I loved the way he showed her how he cared.

These two had to go through so much pain and loss before they could find their way to a love together. I’m excited to read the last book in the series and see how things turn out for the final Spencer sibling.

I enjoy reading about wagon trains and this is the 8th book in the series. A clean historical romance, you will enjoy the characters and see life through their eyes. The trials they endured and the gentle reminders that God is always with them.

While I received a complimentary copy of this book, the review below reflects my own thoughts and opinions.

Wow! What an EPIC, nail-biting, tumultuous journey Rob and Alice's story took me on. While I have not yet read the prequel novel that introduces more of the backstory to their love story, I have read the other seven books in this series and have been intrigued to learn more about their story since the beginning. I knew from the teasers sprinkled throughout the other seven books that this story was going to be awesome and it sure didn't disappoint!

Alice is the very heartbeat of her family. She's been the caretaker, the sister who is always looking out for the needs of her brothers even above her own needs. Throughout the various books in the series, it's clear that Alice is often taken for granted by her brothers and is overlooked, even though she does so much to keep the family together.

Rob has always seen Alice. He sees how hard she works to take care of the needs of others. It's one of the things that he loves most about her. While I didn't realize that Alice was the reason that Rob joined the wagon train in the other books, their story gives us a better picture of Rob's true reason for coming west. While he is excited to start his own life far from the reaches of his controlling grandfather, it's his love for Alice that's the true reason he has joined the wagon train heading west. He knows that because of their different life stations, his controlling grandfather, and the tragedy that drove Alice's family to head west in the first place would have never allowed them to be together. As such, he heads west hoping for a new start and a future that includes the love of his life; Alice.

The journey west is a dangerous trip on its own, combine it with a murderer who is hunting for a member of the company and a dangerous creature that is hunting the wagon train it's going to be a wonder if Rob and Alice will even reach Oregon; let alone if Rob can convince Alice that they are meant for each other. Yet, because of the accident that left Rob with a severely broken leg, and a family debt that Alice feels obliged to pay, the two will be forced together. Can Rob use this time to convince Alice that his feelings haven't changed? Can he prove to her that he's a changed man and that he's no longer underneath his grandfather's thumb? Can Alice allow her feelings for Rob to grow even though her brother Coop is Rob's enemy? Can Alice figure out how to keep her family from being torn apart? Find out by reading this amazing clean western adventure!

"What if I fail?" The admission came out raw, vulnerable in a way Rob had never allowed himself to be. "Then you fail," Leo said simply. "And we pick you back up. That's what family does."

This second-chance romance is full of trail peril, adventure, danger, faith, and romance.

This is book 8 in the Wagon Train Matches series. It can be read alone but would be much more enjoyable in its place in the series. The series covers the wagon train’s journey from Independence to the Willamette Valley. There are overlapping characters and over-arching storylines.

Alice is strong, brave and determined. She was so caring and helpful to everyone around her. I loved her devotion to her brothers and doing everything she could to keep the family together. I loved even more Alice’s realization that God saw her and had been with her throughout everything. Rob is brave, kind, and devoted to Alice. I loved his determination to win Alice’s heart back. I enjoyed seeing him learn to give up control and trust Alice, her brothers, and God. I loved that Rob accepted Alice as she was and helped her to realize that her emotions and opinions did matter. His willingness to do anything for Alice and her family was amazing. I love Alice’s family, they may fight, speak unkindly, and hurt each other’s feelings but they love fiercely and will do anything for each other.

I am very much looking forward to Coop’s story in March 2026. He has had a rough time of it with his siblings and I can’t wait to see how his story ends up.

A few more quotes:
"My feelings haven't changed," he said carefully. "But perhaps what you need most right now is a friend. And I want to be that for you."

"God walked with you through all of that," Rob continued softly. "He saw you. Even when no one else did, He saw that little girl trying so hard to hold everything together. And He sees you now."

This ARC was provided by the author. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.

Faith-building, Gospel-centered, sweet historical romance on the wagon trail overcoming status gaps and heartaches

If you’re reading it as series or jumping onto the bandwagon (pun intended) just know, you’ll appreciate a quick synopsis of the past adventures that lead to the book’s events in the opening pages. And those of us who’ve followed this wagon trial for awhile, aren’t we glad to finally have Alice and Rob have their HEA.

You can’t help but cheer for Rob and his faithfulness in loving Alice no matter the status gap or her brothers’ hostility. His devotion is beautiful, as the courage Alice shows to finally acknowledging her love and fighting for her own happiness.

The wonderful, engaging style of Mrs. Williams you so love definitely keep you “turning one more page” as trail perils, danger, deep emotions, past heartaches, and family drama unfold.
However, it is probably the humility, forgiveness, difficult reconciliation, and need to trust and rely on God our characters must embrace that takes the first seat. It’s hard, it’s real, and it’s inspiring.

And as the other couples appear anew and continue their own stories of life on the trail, you see the realities of struggles that make marriages solid and worthy.

A few things to enjoy:
marvelous characters (real and complex)
Evil in life is brought to light
Lesson to rely people when in need
Choices are measured with Godly views
Inner strength
Worth in who you are, not what you do!
Overcoming fears
Redemption and forgiveness!

Now, after you’ve enjoyed Alice and Rob’s story, go check how it’s started in a short novella Tender Devotion. So so good.

Possible triggers: prostitution (alluded, portrayed as memories, no detail), blindness, post trauma

I had a privilege to read an advanced copy and absolutely loved it! All opinions expressed are my own.

My review today is on the Christian Historical Western Romance, Heart's Perilous Journey. This is book eight in the series Wagon Train Matches. I'm a huge fan of Lacy's work. I'm always excited to get one of her books. I have especially liked this series. I can't even imagine what it would be to spend months crossing the United States and face all the perils. I recently went to Minden to the historical museum. I crawled into one of those wagons. They are so small, how would you get your family and all your belongs and supplies in there? It's a wonder. I know you will love this book.

Alice Spencer and her brothers are leaving a bad situation in the East. The man she thought she was in love with joined the train. This man had been a part of why they had to flee their home. He had cost her brothers much harm. Her brothers never knew about her relationship with their enemy. When her brother and Rob were in an accident and Rob was injured Alice forced herself to care for the man.

Rob Braddock was in love with Alice. When they took off he followed her. A wealthy man he loaded his wagon with everything he needed to start a sawmill in Oregon. He would win her back. The Spencer family had no use for him even as he did everything he could to help them. He saves the youngest Spencer and leg is badly broken. Since he had saved Coop, Coop was expected to help him but his sister, Alice stepped up to help him. Could he win her heart again?

A wild exciting journey through the mountains with enemies out to destroy them. God had a plan for these two, for hope and a future. God has a plan for you too. A good plan for peace and not for destruction when you seek Him with all your hear

Alice and Rob

Oh I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Alice had started to wear on me a little with her judgmental attitude in the previous books. She even had moments in this book with Belle especially where I was ready to throttle her. As the book progressed though I did come to understand her more and like her. Rob has been great since he was introduced. Honestly he had been put through the wringer in a lot of the books leading up to this one.

The connection Alice and Rob shared was lovely. It was nice seeing him see her. He never let her think she was invisible even when her brothers treated her that way. (I’ll get to them later). It was a beautiful story about second chances and finding worth.

Loved the August story arc and hope he can find peace. And as always Owen and Rachel are the best couple!

Now onto what frustrates me to no end- Leo, Collin and Stella. I feel like these three ruin every story for me. Leo is a jerk. I am holding out hope that Coop is innocent- tells Leo to shove it down his throat and walks away from that family. I know we are supposed to believe that the mistakes Coop has made has been the worst thing since Adam and Eve ate the apple- but they are all horrible with him. And Collin- heavens above- he is stupid. The fact we are supposed to believe he is the good twin makes me want to scream. I really think he might be a good character if he wasn’t saddled with the anchor that drags everything down- Stella. The story would be so much better without her.

I’m so excited that the next book is Coop and Belle! I’ve been dying for this one since the first time Coop appeared. I’m ready for the truth to come out and for him and Belle to have a happily ever after. …And for Leo and Collin to eat their words.

I've been waiting for Alice's story almost from the beginning of the series! I could tell that she was a "pleaser" and a "sacrificier" but I wanted to know how she got that way! I watched her through all the books put aside her own feelings and comforts for those of her family and be unselfish. It was time for her to get her own story and get her HEA! However, it would be helpful if you haven't read this whole series, to read the prequel titled, "A Tender Devotion" to see how Alice and Rob met and where their relationship begins. I would also recommend reading the series in order so that you have the back stories on the other characters who are in this book, as well to get the background of what has happened on the wagon train so far. I guess you could figure it out but it's so helpful to understand all the relationships and happenings if you read the previous books

This book seems to have a lot of tough challenges going on! A lot of characters are recovering from things that happened to them previously, and there are fights, misunderstandings, and tragedies that happen in this book. I seemed to cry a lot while reading this and wondered, once again, how pioneers ever made it to the West!!!! My own ancestors made this trek!

Throughout all these challenges, the characters learn how to love & trust each other and get over their pride so others can help them instead of being in control and going solo. The treasure of a family is being able to be there through thick and thin, no matter what.

This whole journey has been perilous, as the wagon train faced multiple natural disasters and man made evils, but the broken hearts are the hardest to bear. Alice thought she was leaving her old life behind, until the wealthy man who secretly romanced her shows up in the wagon train. Her brothers must never know that Rob, the man who is their enemy, is the same man she thought she loved. We have watched through the entire journey as Rob has tried, without success, to win over Alice and her brothers. Now, as Rob risks everything he owns and loses it all to save one of the brothers, the balance changes. And Alice begins to see that Rob genuinely cares for her. Will the arrival of Rob's wealthy grandfather change everything?
Although it can be read as a standalone, this is book eight of the series, and you will enjoy it more and understand the issues and relationships better if you at least read A Tender Devotion, which is the prequel novella to The Wagon Train Matches Series. But if you don't want to wait, jump right in and you will be fine. I joined the wagon train at book four, but when books 1-3 became available in a box set I bought them, and reading them helped me to have a better understanding of both the characters and the hardships the wagon train would face. I highly recommend this story, one of the sweetest of this series. And I look forward to seeing these characters finally reach their dreams in the Willamette Valley.

Another great book in this series, at the end the wagon train is near its destination. The H in this book suffers a lot due to physical injuries he experiences as he tries to show his love for the h, who believes that they are not right for each other due to their differences in their positions in life. She was a house maid and he a wealthy young man who would inherit great wealth. He only saw her as who she was and what she did for others including him when he was disabled due to injuries. Their interactions with each other and the others in the wagon train are real and entertaining. To each of their abilities they put themselves out for the wellbeing of others. The H to the extent that he looses his wagon and all it contained which meant that he lost what he brought to set up a sawmill, which was his new future. Feeling defeated he is going to return home when one of the h’s brothers makes him realize that he still has much to give to his sister and the community out west. As the H and the h’s brother are returning to the wagon train that has continued on their journey the H saves the h as she is returning to get him. Can’t wait to find out what happens next in this very interesting series. Hope you are enjoying it as much as I am. You can read this book as a stand alone but knowing the background adds to the story. The H and h do get their HEA. Enjoy!

This is the much anticipated story of Alice and Rob. We started their story in the short prequel book 'A tender devotion' and have had glimpses of it throughout the Wagon Train Matches series so it was so good to get to their story.  This book is best enjoyed when you have read the other books in the series first.
Alice is the peacemaker of her family and with her brothers has plenty of practice! But as they get busy with new families and the trail gets dangerous, tensions run high and Alice feels hurt and ignored. Rob sees Alice, for who she is and tries to help - a bit hard when she won't talk to him. His unfortunate broken leg means she needs to help him and they are forced to spend some time together but can they work through their past and different status in society? This story is full of danger, drama, family, forgiveness and love.
I really enjoyed this book, it kept me on my toes never quite knowing where the story was going and what danger would suddenly appear.  I know I will enjoy reading this book and the series again. I'm now avidly looking forward to book 9 of the series!

Rob Braddock comes from a wealthy family in NJ. He is headed to OR on a wagon train. He plans to start a sawmill in OR. He is also in love with Alice. Alice worked as a maid at his grandfather's house. Rob fell in love with Alice, but they were from different stations in life. When Alice and her brothers decide to go to OR, Rob leaves to go with them. Alice still sees herself as beneath him. They barely tolerate each other on the wagon train. Her brothers don't care for him because they used to work for him and his grandfather. They saw him just as controlling as his grandfather. When he is hurt helping Alice's brother, Coop, she takes care of him. As they continue to travel across the mountains and face dangers and trials, Rob sees how she cares for her family and how much they take her for granted. He tells her that he wants to be her friend. She learns to lean on him. Then her brothers realize how they have overlooked her all these years. But, God never over looked her. He was always with her. Rob learned that he didn't' always have to be in control. He could ask for help. Family helped each other out because they were family. Not out of obligation.

This is the eighth book in Williams’ Wagon Train Matches series. I highly recommend you read the series in order so that you have the back stories on the various characters who show up in this book, as well as understand mentions of things that happened previously. You’ll especially want to read the prequel, A Tender Devotion, as it gives the beginnings of the relationship between Alice and Rob, the main couple featured in this book.

This book seems to have more than its fair share of awful plot twists – half the characters are still recovering from things that happened to them in the last book, and more accidents, fights, misunderstandings, etc, happen in this book. So be prepared with tissues handy.

Throughout all the challenges, the characters learn how to trust others and let them help out, instead of being in control and doing it all alone. What is needed for a family to hang together is also important, and the need of being really seen by someone. I can’t wait for the last book!

Set in the mid 1800s, Heart's Perilous Journey is the eighth touching installment of the wonderful Wagon Train Matches series, a family saga exploring the compelling challenges of family bonds, faith, and survival on the Oregon Trail. Alice Spencer and Rob Braddock take center stage in this book. Their secret past involves family struggles that prompted the Spencer family to join the wagon train to Oregon. The short prequel to the series A Tender Devotion gives valuable insight into how their romantic relationship began, so I recommend reading it first. Richly drawn characters and gripping drama keep the story moving with intensity, immersing me completely from beginning to end. I am grateful for the way Alice and Rob's journey reflects themes of forgiveness, redemption, resilience, and love tested by frontier hardships. I loved this story and can't wait to read the concluding book of the series.
I read an early copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a touching, sometimes heartbreaking, story of love growing through hardship, danger, and trials on the Oregon Trail. Rob and Alice, who one time had a forbidden love, find each other again when he leaves his wealth and possessions behind to follow her west. Alice keeps her distance, because her brothers feel he is at fault for them having to leave their home and join the wagon train. When Rob is severely injured saving Coop's (her youngest brother) life, she commits to caring for him and begins to see that he is not the spoiled rich man everyone thinks he is. As they face more danger and loss, they both need to decide what they really want, and what is worth fighting for. In the end, they choose love and a committment to face whatever comes together, trusting God to guide them. This series demonstrates the strength of family, even when they don't always get along.

I received a copy of this book from the author, but a positive review was not required, and this is my honest opinion.

Heart's Perilous Journey by Lacy Williams continues the story of a group of siblings traveling west towards the Willamette Valley on the Oregon trail. As many of the travelers encounter intense trials due to both the terrain and being chased by enemies of the past, Rob and Alice can no longer ignore their own past. They were once trying to cross the bridge of societal differences and expectations back in New Jersey. When an explosion forced Alice and her family to flee New Jersey, Rob gave up everything to follow her.

I am enjoying reading this westward saga and following the siblings, their now relatives, and friends become stronger after facing the danger and trials of the trail. I believe this book is best read in the order of the series or the reader may feel a bit lost. Rob and Alice's story actually begins with the prequel to the series "A Tender Devotion." This series is a sweet read with no spice.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the author. All views expressed are my honest opinion.

It’s okay to need help.

That is a lesson that is learned by many people throughout this novel. Rob has to learn he isn’t in control of everything; he has to let others help, but more importantly, he must let God help him. Alice has to learn that she can let her needs show and that others can help her and that God hasn’t forgotten her. He has led her all the way. August is moving forward from a tragedy and needs loved ones’ help, if he could just let himself accept it.

Rob and Alice must overcome hurts from the past and their own pride and stubbornness to find their hearts are meant for each other. There is also danger from nature and bad guys that the wagon train faces. An intense read that kept me on my toes.

I enjoyed the novel. I received a complimentary copy from the author and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

I received an ARC of this book, the thoughts and opinions are my own. A great story of perseverance when faced with opposition from all angles. A good reminder that God never leaves you, no matter what you are going through. This book places you in the wagon train, all the hard work and the hard days, all the fun and camaraderie and the closeness that you get to when traveling for months on end and depending on each other. It reminds you how important family is, and staying together through it all. Rob and Alice’s story is a complex one, but so sweet. Rob sees Alice, really sees her, and is her strong support as she tries to keep her family together when it all seems for naught. I love when God works things together for good to those who love Him!

Heart’s Perilous Journey

Alice and Rob have such a marvelous story. He is from elite society and she is a working woman. Back east their relationship is taboo. His grandfather does not approve thus he is following her and her family out west. Her family had worked for his grandfather and do not approve of him either. Due to an accident, Alice finds herself nursing Rob while he suffers a badly broken leg. Will she be able to keep her heart hardened to his advances? What happens when his grandfather catches up to them? The book and their relationship is an adventure that feels like the reader is right there with them in the next wagon. I highly recommend you reading their story.

Hearts Perilous Journey is the eighth book in the Wagon Train Matches series. Alice is the main character in this story. I love how Alice has grown and matured through the series. As her past is revealed, I began to understand her and how she feels unseen by her family and by God. The romance between Alice and Rob is filled with problems, the biggest one being her brothers. There is danger from weather, attackers, wild animals and more.
I throughly enjoyed this story and look forward to the next book. It is best to start reading the series with A Tender Devotion to understand all the family drama and connections.

I can always count on Lacy Williams to deliver a tender story with the perfect mix of danger and romance. Heart's Perilous Journey, the next installment in Williams's Wagon Train Matches series, was a sensory array. With the challenges of wagon train life, complex family dynamics, and an emotional discovery of life’s purpose, this book held a page-turning pace. I loved the interplay between characters as each sought to make amends for the past and pave a way for the future.

I highly recommend reading each book in this series. You will not be disappointed!

This book #8 in the Wagon Train Matches series but can be read as a standalone book.

Different themes are reflected through Alice and Rob's story from forgiveness, resilience and love tested by the hardship of wagon train living to name a few.

Lots of danger and trails had to be faced in this story not just for Alice and Rob.

This story made me cry in places and fall in love with the characters even more as the story moved forward.

I look forward to reading the next book in the series, I have loved all of them so far.

I received a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. The review expressed here is my honest opinion.

After reading this story, I wonder why any pioneer crossed the country. The way their journey is described, I felt like I was part of the caravan. This story highlights Rob and Alice. Their differences couldn’t be more pronounced: owner’s son to lowly housemaid just to start. As an only child, Rob thought he had to earn his place in a family. Alice and her brothers show him a different kind of family. Plenty of obstacles to keep everyone on their toes. With wagons full of supporting cast.
Lacy crafts another heart tugging story.

I couldn’t wait to read Alice and Rob’s journey and was not disappointed. Alice has really grown and matured throughout the series and Rob was forever patient and kind. I really loved him and his thoughtfulness. It was great to see Leo and Rob forming a friendship. I was so happy to “see” August again. He has been one of my faves and I had wondered about his character. I felt all the emotions for him. Love this series. I did receive an advanced copy from the author and will read it again when the release date arrives!

Just another reminder of all the crazy things that early settlers had to face going west. If you enjoy western/wagon train settler type books filled with adventure, romance, and a faith based message then this book is for you. It is a series and I definitely recommend starting with the first book and reading in order as you get to know these family members and their stories. In this one it deals with a second chance at love and a message that God sees you, you are never alone and he is in control.

Alice and Rob’s story is full of emotions. Of course we also follow the lives of all the Spencer family. The author brings all the perils of the wagon train to vivid life. So much going on: gunshots, a cougar, family member going missing, and the growing relationship between Alice and Rob. Love this story and can’t wait to read Coop and Belle’s story.

Rob and Alice's story

Life on a wagon train would have been hard. As nice as it was for Alice to have all her brothers with her, they were also a problem. They really didn't notice her which made it hard when Rob did. And with him being so wealthy, she was afraid to trust him being sure about their relationship. So many trials and challenges in this story. Maybe a bit too many and too many couples side stories in this one.

What could go wrong?

Alice Spencer has loved Rob Braddock for ages, and he has loved her. But he's the Old Man's rich grandson and she the scullery maid. How can they ever resolve these differenc3s, with all her brothers hating on Rob? Their journey toward togetherness weaves a good story. I've made this journey with them and the whole wagon train seems like family now. Anxious to wrap it up with Coop & Belle's story!
