When you’ve lost the ones you love, can you risk loving again . . . ?
Evylin battles the weight of grief.
After losing her uncle, Evylin wonders if the gamble she took—marrying Colonel Deckard to gain a life of adventure—has cost her too much. Buried in sorrow, she throws herself into their quest to save Ephria and Wauld from the tyrant Night Mage, avoiding the one choice she fears most: If she lets herself love Deckard, what happens if she loses him too?
Deckard fights to prove his love.
Dedicated to the promise he made to Hewitt, Deckard is determined to secure Evylin’s happiness—no matter the cost. But serving a traitorous organization to restore a magic he once considered heretical has turned his world upside down. Faced with unsettling choices between his ethics and his wife, Deckard questions the man he’s become.
With their new allies at their side, Evylin and Deckard journey into enemy territory to retrieve the next three Relics that will save their kingdom. Danger lurks in every shadow—hostile soldiers, Mages, and bounty hunters in constant pursuit. As Evylin works to understand the lost magic of the Warriors, Deckard faces the haunting of his own choices . . . and a burgeoning power lurking within his soul.
V.K. Dixon writes fantasy and romance novels filled with found family, lasting love, and unique magic. She believes that the extraordinary gives us a deeper desire for the things beyond us; for the things of God.
So much to do, but I am so excited to do it. This one has such a different feel to the first book, and the characters’ journeys are full of ups and downs. Also, things get SUPER crazy with the magic and I love it. 🤭
Really looking forward to tackling the official first revision, and get the story ready for betas later this year. ✨
Victoria's writing is immersive and witty. I found myself laughing out loud and kicking my feet. I enjoyed this sequel immensely. I'm super excited to dive into book 3!
Incredible read!! Once again so impressed by the depth of each character, the world building, and every detail in between. I love getting a chance to read this and absolutely devoured it in days. The characters really feel *real*, the world building isn’t confusing or outrageous, and the burn is perfectly timed. I couldn’t be more impressed with this series!!
All the meticulous world building, character, and story development from book one just explodes to epic proportions in Sword and Shadow. It's hard to articulate all that I felt for this book, but everything was INTENSE. And I loved it. I was devastated, infuriated, mesmerized, and, in the end, so satisfied with where the characters leave off--both on their quest, as well as their personal growth. I think I say this every time I review a V.K. Dixon book, but YOU HAVE TO READ IT. The characters come to life more than you will find anywhere else, and her storytelling is so unique in that it is truly something you can soak into and enjoy; whether the story is moving 10 or 1000 miles an hour. 💜⚔️✨
My thoughts, in a word—okay, in two words? Deeply satisfying. (Spice level notes below)
Like the first book, I devoured this. V. K. Dixon knows what she’s doing, and she does it with excellence.
This sequel immediately earns its right to exist. Picking up where the first book left off, we’re plunged into the action and emotional tension from the start. The characters’ internal struggles and relationships with each other were DELICIOUS. Is that weird to say? It was just so good. Even though I sometimes wanted to smack some sense into Evelyn, watching her come to her senses on her own was SO satisfying. These characters’ deep intricacies were fleshed out even more and their arcs were beautiful. (Special shout out to Thom 😭)
I loved getting to know the world and magic better in this book. You learn so much but also get the feeling there will be much to learn in book 3! Let’s just say the duality/dichotomy of Night magic is super intriguing 🤩
As expected, this book was phenomenal. While a lot of books claim to be about “true love,” this book actually tackles what it means to love someone when it’s not easy or when loving them comes at a great cost. ❤️
All that said, I can’t wait for book 3 😍

A few notes on content: Intimacy level: Since “no spice” can mean different things to different people, I’ll refer to the definitions and categories laid out in a pinned post by @closeddoorromance (Rachel Luke Parker) on Instagram. This book is a little bit steamier than book one (Fire & Night), but still falls within the “no/low spice” or “closed door” categories. Using Rachel’s defined intimacy levels, I’d say this book hovers between levels 2-3. I’d recommend checking out her account and take note of that pinned post!
Language: also a little bit more in this book than the first one, but not severe or excessive and always included with purpose.
Violence: Just a realistic amount of fantasy violence given the dangerous tasks at hand. Never grimdark or gory.

Disclaimer: I had the pleasure of reading an ARC copy of this book for an honest review.
This second book was very satisfying. I loved the first book, but I did like this one better. I thought the pacing was better and the action and pay-offs were so satisfying.
You know the song by Sabrina Carpenter, "When Did You Get Hot?"... that was me with Deckard this book... Yes please...
I will say... Evylin annoyed me for 90% of this book, I was SCREAMING at her through my Kindle so much to just OPEN HER EYES... but we are good now. We have fixed our relationship and are cool now. She just better treat Deckard with ALL THE LOVE IN THE WORLD. I did love the Day Relic and how she used it to cover up her grief, I thought how it was all handled was very intriging and caused for great beats in the story. And her love confession... one of the best love confessions I have read. I loved the pacing, I loved the way she spoke, I loved the character direction in the scene. Flawless. But girl... don't tell a man that it was "over rather quickly". GIRL!
But yes, I loved that we got better connected with all our favorite characters. I love everyone's ARC and where they are headed. I loved everyone's moments in this book, we really got to spend time with all of them and all of their stories were so fun to read.
I loved Ilain, getting to know her and Auden more. Getting to spend more time with them, and her relationship grow with Evylin and Thom and ETHENN... *wink wink*.
I loved Thom's growth as a person and character. My heart broke for him and healed for him and I can't wait to see where he goes and I cannot wait to see WHICH LUCKY GIRL WILL LOVE HIM... cause that will happen... right? RIGHT?! (please).
The tension was great in this book as well, there were some sexy moments that took me by surprise and I loved it all. I also loved the tender moments and the HEALING.. SO MUCH HEALING. It was great.
Deckard... oh Deckard... yes. OP. So cool. So rewarding... again... "When did you get hot all the sudden..." Shadow daddy, let's go! And him and Evylin fighting together was so satisfying. I will say I am scared for implications of things... but I am SURE we will be fine cause you wouldn't DARE hurt him... right? Okay good.
I hope for more Rafferty moments, he is there and I love him, but I want to know him on a deeper level and have more central moments of him in the plot. He is too good not to utilize, so that is something I am hoping for.
I loved the plot developments in this book, all the new lore, and gearing up for the final battle. I'm excited to continue the story and see where everyone ends up. I thought the set up was well done.
Overall, this was a great second installment and I cannot wait to see how this story continues! I want all the banter, all the tension, all the swoonworthy moments... and all the EPICNESS! Thanks!

This second book had me hooked right from the start. We jumped right back into the action and the feelings where the first book left off. I find that in many trilogies, the second book tends to ramble on and conflict is artificially created just to keep up some interest. I did not get any of that from this book. Since the characters - their emotions, their struggles, their wants - were so well executed in the first book, this just felt like a continuation and every conflict was on-par for the characters. Victoria really has a knack for conveying emotions in such a real and human way it really draws you in to feel what the characters are feeling. I was really pleased that there was some semblance of resolution in the end of this book while still leaving obvious gaps and questions that need to be answered in the next book.
Onto some spoilers below....
Overall, this was such a fun read and I can't wait to get my hands on book 3!!
As is always the case when I read a Dixon book, I think to myself: why didn't I start this sooner? Why didn't I drop everything I was already reading to get into this book?
This book was an emotional ride, wrapped up in a fantasy world, and tied with an adventure bow. Our band of lovable and disparate characters are still on their quest for the magical relics. Now they cross the continent and spend the whole book travelling through the enemy country of Wauld, avoiding various dangers and complaining about the weather. They do gain a few more relics after facing magical dangers, and are surprised by several revelations as they learn more about magic. (I'm being intentionally vague because: spoilers). This is such a well-thought-out magic system that is easy to understand without diminishing its complexities.
But this book would have been just as gripping and entertaining if it were in a contemporary setting with no adventure and magic. The true heart of this book is in the characters, their relationships, their emotions, and their personal growth. The marriage of convenience between Jonn and Evylin, our two main POV characters, is on the rocks, and the other characters' relationships both grow and are strained in possibly equal measure. We got an extra perspective in this book: from Thom. This was a masterful and intentional choice to help the reader understand his emotions and character growth.
Victoria does such a great job writing complex, flawed characters with complex emotions and motivations that make her books so engaging and interesting. I found myself rejoicing with and getting annoyed with the characters as they worked through their internalised lies and insecurities.
I cannot wait for the final book in this trilogy and to hold the beautiful illustrated cover books in my hands when the kickstarter is fulfilled!
What you'll find in this book: *epic fantasy *Jane Austen meets Skyrim *sword and sorcery *marriage of convenience *found family *warring countries *relic quest *dual 3rd person POV
Content warning: death during battle, fantasy violence, terror Romance level: 5 (closed door, some innuendo, passionate kisses)
I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
“Warriors & Mages” by V.K. Dixon is easily one of my favorite fantasy series so far. (I may or may not have jumped & danced around when I got the opportunity to to read the ARC for book two 🤪)
“Sword & Shadow” was one of my most highly anticipated reads for the year & let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint!! It was one of the best sequels in a trilogy I’ve read to date. Dixon. Never. Misses. From plot, to magic system, to world building, to found family, to love stories to politics- every element exceeds all expectations.
In “Sword & Shadow”, Dixon masterfully strings together a love story that wrestles through grief, trusting when everything screams against it, & choosing the other person when it’s the hardest thing in the world to do. Evelyn & Deckard’s relationship is one of my favorites I’ve ever seen. I laughed, I cried (plenty) & I genuinely gained so much from them in this book.
Another highlight from this story was (yet again) the found family & “side character” relationships & stories we see deepen & strengthen. I have no CLUE what super powers V.K. Dixon taps into in order to execute such depth & fullness, to balance each character as an individual, let alone their relational dynamics to each other, but it is so insanely impressive & one of the defining qualities that makes Dixon stand out as an author.
I could go on forever about how this series is full of touching depth & adventure that either keeps you on your toes, wiping your eyes or giggling late into the night because you simply can’t put the book down. I could gush endlessly about how impressive V.K. Dixon is as an author- about how masterful I think she is at balancing so many elements that delivers some of the most well rounded story-telling I’ve ever seen. I could fangirl about this world & magic system & these characters all day. But I’ll spare you for now, & say that you should pick these books up as soon as they release or else suffer fomo forever ;)
I cannot tell you the screams I scrumpt with each plot twist in this book. Again, as I believe I said about the first book, I love and I mean LOVE these characters. Their emotional depth and diversity make them very relatable and easy to connect with. I believe that a good book only comes with well written multi-faceted characters. I mean what’s a good book if you don’t want to reach through the pages and slap a character out of love( cough cough Thom). VK Dixon is by far my favorite author when it comes to writing attachable characters. The banter will have you laughing and kicking your feet. The lore and world building is very unique and deliciously complex; not overwhelming, but immensely engaging. Just like book one (I did arc reads for both) I finished both books within 6 days; about 3 each. I literally could not bring myself to put the books down and often got so immersed I forgot to check the time leading to some late night/early morning reads. I love the overall aesthetic of the books— being a big pride and prejudice girly— I love me some Jonn Deckard. Honestly my favorite book boyfriend by far. I cannot wait to see what’s in store for book 3!! Definitely a new comfort read for me. I just finished the second book a few minutes ago and already want to reread them again and again. I for sure know anything she writes will be an instant buy for me.
And here I was thinking the first book was amazing... this one was so much better! You could go in and ask pretty much any of my friends, and they'd tell you that this book had me reacting so much, from screaming in frustration because the characters were doing something I didn't like again, whether it was one of the characters in the main party (they have very definitive opinions about each of the party members), or it was one of the antagonists, to giggling in joy because something was going oh so right. Victoria has me waiting in rapture for when the physical books come out (my friends want to read them too now!). She has somehow weaved together the relationship twists and turns that usually go with a romance, with Pride and Prejudice vibes, and a fantasy adventure in a way that I have seen no other author do. I love how Victoria also doesn't just focus on Evylin and Deckards relationship, she also expands to help the whole group grow and show how they work together. I love how Victoria has weaved in elements that readers love in romantasy, but made them entirely her own with new twists that fit into the relationships, world, and magic system that she has built. I absolutely loved this installment in Warriors and Mages, and I wish I could go into the future to get the next one, cause it's not coming fast enough!
I have read a lot of books. Like, a lot. But I have never connected to or been so deeply immersed in a story as this one.
Each character is so real, raw, and intricately written, I feel as if I know them personally. The internal struggles, growth, and challenges they each face are so beautifully worked out through the storyline.
I cried. I rarely have ever cried for a book. My heart broke many times as I saw the characters face their deepest fears. But I laughed (yes, out loud) and was absolutely giddy, as well.
I will now anxiously await and count the days until I can read the final book in this incredible trilogy. Unfortunately, I don’t know if I will be prepared to read it, because I will so deeply sad to finish this story for the first time. I’m so glad to know I will be able to return to it time and time again in the years to come.
this book was definitely a top read for this year. easily five stars. i was perfectly frustrated for a large part of this book as Evylin worked through her grief and attachment issues, Thom being literally the worst (we love a redemption arc though), and Deckard trying his best but feeling that he’s falling short. the characters were written SO well with their motivations and the complexities of how Deckard/Evylin’s actions would cause the other to spiral. i loved the action and the overall pacing of the book.
i am very relieved that Deckard and Evylin finally got their issues figured out as it was stressing me out for a while 😮💨 i’m so excited to see where book three takes us!!!
zero notes, absolute perfection, would read again.

A perilous adventure that feels like a Dungeons and Dragons campaign with all the magic, angst, and banter—this is Sword And Shadow.
The second book in a three book series can often be tricky; they sometimes feel like a filler to get to the conclusion of the third book. This author did a good job making this book its own thing (not just a transition to get to the third book). The pacing was well done, and I honestly flew through it (in a good way).
I did feel as if some of the characters’ arcs wrapped up almost too quickly/neatly at the end, so I’m curious if the third book will focus more on the plot/adventure rather than character dynamics.
Overall, good read and I’m excited to see how the series ends!
Content warning: This book does have some lewd jokes (though not overly explicit) and a closed door romance scene (with minor foreplay).
***I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and this voluntary review is all my own thoughts***
I normally have a hard time with 2nd books in trilogies. Often the characters become bland, or I lose interest or things aren't moving fast enough.
This book did NOT have those problems. I was hooked from the end of Book 1 and V.K. Dixon just kept nudging me along through Book 2. The character development was through the roof in this one. No one became stagnant or whiny. Every decision and conversation was meaningful. I never got annoyed to the point of quitting, it was actually the opposite.
So much happened in this book, and all of it relevant. The character arcs are BEAUTIFUL!!! Deckard, Evie, Ethenn, Ilain and especially Thom! I need book 3 please!!!!
*ARC REVIEW* There is nothing I can say that can accurately describe the beauty of this story. The first book was such an experience that I wasn’t sure how the second would hold up and I will say. It’s even better. The plot twists are incredible and I definitely did not see some of them coming. Deckard just gets better and better as you keep reading and ugh what a man he is. Our quest is getting more and more perilous and our team of characters has to face many internal and external battles along the way. I cannot wait for the third installment and will be waiting not so patiently to have it in my hands.
Book 1 ended with a heartbreak that is still raw in this second installment, but all the world building, magic system, and side characters introduced in Book 1 give purpose to the story now.
The daily struggles that the characters had shared previously gave way to a camaraderie that was needed for the quest ahead. The book delves deeper into the magic system and balances out the action and emotional turmoil perfectly.
The book also defines love in a way that you don't usually see. It's easy to love when everything is right, but holding on to that love when things go wrong, is difficult.
This series has a grip on me and I cannot wait for Book 3.
Brilliant as expected!!! Book 2 of the Warriors and Mages series did not disappoint and has semented my thoughts that Jonn Deckard's is the best MMC of all time.
The story is fulled with adventure, action, plot twist and sweet romance. Dixon does a very good job when it comes to lovable, original character and the development of these characters, making it impossible to choose a favorite. I also adore the relationship between our MFC and MMC, which feels very reel. Can't wait for book 3
Sword and Shadow is action packed! This was a roller coaster ride of emotions for me. I was literally yelling at one of the characters which is great I love being so sucked into the world that the characters feel real to me. I could picture every scene like I was watching a movie so many surprises and jaw dropping moments but it also digs deep into grief and perception along with how different emotions could effect us and our relationships. This series is amazing can't wait for the last book.
I have been so excited to dive in to this second book and it did not disappoint! The characters continued to grow, as did relationships. I love that these characters are flawed and feel so real as they grapple with their past and try to move forward. The pacing was a great combination of action and suspense without sacrificing any of the important relationship building that has helped me fall in love with almost all of them. Some just aren’t lovable, but that’s what keeps things interesting.
I read this thing in less than 24 hours (my husband was both disgusted and terrified 😅) because I couldn't put it down. Absolutely loved the plot twists and secrets that came to light and Evylin & Deckard's character development as well as their relationship arc. I guessed a few things and am both anticipating and terrified to read the final book, I don't want the adventure to end!
What a great read, can’t stop thinking about it. It’s a great blend of witty banter, and heart wrenching moments. The magic and quest are also a great combination of ideas we’ve seen with enough newness that it doesn’t feel “old.”
It answers lots of questions from the first while still leaving you excited for the conclusion to come.
So good! Loved getting back into this storyworld and adventuring with the crew. Lots of incredible character dynamics and banter and edge of your seat action. Can’t wait for the next book!!
~~I received an early copy of this book from the author and was not required to leave a positive review.~~
Another love! I am enjoying this series so much and the development of all the characters! The storyline is amazing and I am just so excited to be amongst one of the first people to read it 😊
Fantastic writing, captivating story, and loveable characters. This was the perfect sequel and leaves you ready for the final book. Get ready to laugh, cry, and rejoice throughout this book!
I love this story SO MUCH! It’s fun, dangerous, immersive and so well written!
There were some plot twists that I had suspicions over from the first book that I was excited to see come to fruition and I kicked my feet in glee when it did!
I also felt each character development was beautifully done!
There is banter and wit, magic and adventure, heart and laughter, and SO. MUCH. ANGST. I found my struggling just a little bit through the angst as it felt repetitive and so very frustrating, BUT it was important to further the plot so I’m here for it.
All I can say is read this series. You will not regret it!!!
I received a few e-book copy as an ARC for my honest review, so here it is.
Somehow, this book is even better than the first! It's definitely more fast paced, there's minimal "down time" and the character growth of multiple characters really drives what little there is, so it never feels like your usual 2nd book filler! This book is amazing in its own right, and only makes me even more ready for the 3rd one! I fear I'm never going to want to leave this world.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book early, I cannot stop talking about it to everyone, and I'm anxiously awaiting the conclusion of the trilogy so I can start over again from the beginning!
