A Taboo Love #2

Unmasking Charlotte

Rate this book
Some say that I'm cynical. Some say that I'm flippant. But I am neither of those things. I am just a realist, who through an unfortunate turn of events, learned the hard way that everything is in fact black or white. At least for me it is, and always will be.

But then there is Calvin King. The thorn in my side, the pain in my ass. He is what some would call the perfect man - an imposing businessman, an even more impressive ladies’ man. Every man wants to be him and every woman just wants him. At least that is what I hear. I’m not admitting to anything beyond that.

What I do know and will concede to, is that my resolve is tested as soon as I meet Calvin. He ticks every box off my checklist - sexy as sin, tall, dark, rich, intelligent, and funny. My body craves just the thought of him. How can I possibly keep him at arm’s length when he is the only man I want and desire? And it doesn’t help that he kisses like a god and sets my body on fire. Crap! Don’t ask me how I know that, he doesn’t play fair.

Most importantly, I can’t let him unmask me, it’s my only defense.

Unmasking Charlotte is book 2 of the Taboo Love series and picks up where Hey There, Delilah left off. As with Hey There, Delilah, it is a standalone - so don’t worry if you haven’t read Hey There, Delilah, yet - with a HEA. That means no cliffhanger! Oh, and expect to see some of your favorite characters.

Hi! My name is M.D. Saperstein. I am currently a stay at home mom with my two gorgeous kids. I wasn't always a full time mom, though. After graduating from the University of Florida - Go Gators! - I attended law school at Stetson University. I spent the next 10 years practicing law. I also spent some time counseling mental health patients in an out patient psychiatric hospital. But, until having my own children, my most rewarding job by far was licensing families to receive abused and neglected foster children.

So, that brings us to today. In my spare time, while my children were napping, I started editing novels for other authors. The more I edited, the more ready I felt to write my own. I just needed a new and exciting story line. Once Hey There, Delilah was conceived, the ball starting rolling very quickly. I hooked up with fellow author Andria Large, and we decided to tackle it together. Best decision ever!

I spend most of my free time with my husband and children. But when I get some "me" time, I love to read. Mostly romance and erotica, but I don't discriminate - a good book is a good book, no matter the genre.

4 STARS FOR UNMASKING CHARLOTTE.

This book is the second in the Taboo Love series. It's probably not necessary to have read the first, Hey There, Delilah, but I think that it would be worthwhile to read it because Nick and Delilah play such a big role in this book...and because it's really funny and cute. Like the first book this is written in 1st person narrative from both MC's points of view.

Calvin and Charlotte have a lot in common. Besides having the same group of friends, they both come from strong, loving, supportive, close-knit families. Love and Loyalty come before anything else and they are both smart, funny and wickedly attracted to each other.

But Charlotte is holding back and not giving into the impulse to see where this attraction could take them. Calvin starts to think that it's the race issue that's Charlotte's problem. And he's partly right.

Charlotte has some demons that she's trying very hard to keep buried in the past where they belong, and she figures starting up with Calvin could open a messy can of worms that would just make them upset and strain their friendship.

But the attraction prevails and these two embark on a steamy and sweet love affair.

Despite the somewhat dark and uncomfortable subject matter that the story addresses, this is, for a good portion, a very funny and cute, sometimes ridiculous (e.g. Calvin's unsexy irrational cat phobia) tale.

I don't want to give too much away but I want to mention that I appreciated that this wasn't just laugh-a-minute fluffy stuff. I really liked the conflict and conclusion. But I will say that I did feel that Calvin's reaction to Charlotte's secret seemed a bit of an out-of-character overreaction. There was also a bit of the book when weeks and weeks are passing and we're told, not shown, that Calvin and Charlotte are getting deep. I know the authors can't put every interaction in there, but I felt a little on the outside, like I wasn't really feeling this love of theirs. This is trivial, and didn't really effect my enjoyment of the book, but there were a couple of trite, eye-rolling plot devices used. But, like I said, it's trivial and this is a romance novel--I can overlook the little stuff.

This book has a lot that is great. A serious and realistic conflict, Steam and chemistry between the hero and heroine, funny banter and inner monologues, secondary characters we love, some suspense and an epilogue that leaves us dying for Parker's story.

I have quite a high expectation on this book because I love Book 1 Hey, Delilah featuring Nick Santino and Delilah! I simply can't stop gushing about that book to my friends. But Unmasking Charlotte really did disappoint me. There are humour and some funny moments, but I didn't find myself laughing out loud or peeing myself this time. The previous hero used to be so hilarious that even his emoticon make me rolling on the floor.

We have Charlotte who is Delilah's bff and Calvin who is Nick's bff. So naturally we got plenty of Nick and Delilah that was great. I'm so glad to catch up with their wedding preparation and all that.

Charlotte is a white girl, working in some movie production company, and she had an awful experience during her teenage years with a black guy. Therefore, she only dates white guys. Even though she had a strong attraction to Calvin, she decided to blow him off.

Calvin gave up on his law degree and change his career path to become the owner of a sex club named Club Masquerade. He is a black guy who dates woman regardless you are black, white, yellow or whatever. To him all women are beautiful. But he had his eye on Charlotte since some time ago.

Out of a sudden, Charlotte past resurface and forced her to deal with her long ago buried demon. She then came to a realization that she shall not let the past dictate her future and gave in her feeling for Calvin.

Despite the issue of black guy dating a white girl, there isn't any heavy emphasize on the racism issue. To me their relationship progression seems too easy once Charlotte decided to date him and the romance felt average. Is just felt like an average comfort read if you are looking for an easy romance with some sexy times.

Things that I don't like

1.

2.

3.

The epilogue from Parker's POV was a surprised. I was shocked about who is his potential partner though.

If you are new to this author, I recommend you try Book 1 Hey, Delilah first, which I think is much more superior that Book 2.

"Taboo Love"????

What the fuck is so TABOO about interracial relationships?

This may be a great story, but to use the word "taboo" in regards to interracial relationships is just backwards.

Moreover, it's a Black man/White woman romance which sets off my alarm bells because too many of these books are chock full of race fail - Black man as racist sex fantasy aka the icky White husband who wants his White wife fucked by Black neighbor (or several). This one probably doesn't fall into that category, but "taboo" doesn't help much.

This was a really good book and a quick read. Like the first book in the series, it was straightforward and cute. The characters were likable and fun-loving. I enjoyed book 1, but I think this book was even better.

Charlie was a spitfire, but we didn't learn much about her in book 1. This book tells the story of her and Calvin, but Delilah and Nick make a few appearances and that helped to smooth the transition between books 1 and 2. It is nice to have some familiarity sometimes.

This book was more emotional than the first, but not in a depressing, you want to slit your wrists sort of way. It just dealt with heavier topics than the first book. In fact, I'm pretty impressed that the author was able to tackle such a topic without having it overshadow the fun and light-hearted love story.

When Calvin unexpectedly finds out the secret that Charlie hasn't shared with him, all he'll breaks loose. I've gotta say that I didn't see it coming. For such a nice boyfriend, he certainly became a grade-A asswipe! If I could've reached through my iPad and punched him, I would have!

I also thought that the boys playing superheroes, complete with trips between apartments, while Delilah and Charlie are being held hostage by some psycho, was pretty stupid. I didn't get that panicked vibe from the guys that you'd expect in such a situation. It felt more like, "Honey I've got to pick up the dry cleaning and some groceries, but on the way home I'll see if I have time to swing by and rescue you." Whatever happened to 911? Oh well, I guess that's why it's fiction.

Luckily, Calvin does eventually pull his head out of his ass and the story gets back on track. The story has a HEA and an ending, which is harder and harder to come by these days. If you want a stand-alone book that you can read quickly, this is a great choice. :)

I purchased hey there Delilah and was so impressed with these two authors that I could not wait until the second book in the series was published. I was so happy to wake up and see unmasking Charlotte on sale. I already finished reading it and can definitely say I was so glad I did. The story is fantastic, there are some hot scenes, and there were no editing errors like in some other books I've bought from other authors. Definitely recommend it for anyone who loves a great romantic story. Girls, please finish Parker's book ASAP. Cannot wait to read his story.

Another great book in the A Taboo Love series! This book featured Charlotte and Calvin, Delilah's and Nick's bffs, they were both first introduced in book one and the attraction was instantaneous from the first moment they set eyes each other. Calvin has been attempting to ask her out but Charlotte has kept him at arms length because of a pretty awful thing that happened to her in her past. The chemistry between these two was explosive and HOT! I haven't read too many interracial romances but i have truly truly enjoyed the ones that i have and this one was no exception!

I've loved the two books out so far in this series...they're sweet and very sexy and there are quite a few laugh out loud moments!! I was very shocked with the epilogue and what is possibly in store for Parker and what appears to be his love interest! I did not see that one coming but i'm def. looking forward to it!

**** 4 Cranky Stars ****

Charlotte is a girl who knows how to make a big impression, with her sass, humor and determination to overcome past tragedies. Calvin has had his sights set on Charlotte from the get go, and trying to get her attention has been difficult for the self proclaimed ladies man.

Charlotte knows the trauma of pain and heartache all too well, keeping Calvin at bay, just for that reason. She soon realizes that the heart wants what the heart wants, and it’s become a struggle to keep that sexy man waiting in the wings.

Their story is a true testament to overcoming life’s struggles and learning to love yourself and realizing you’re worth it. With the push and shove of their awesome friends, how can they go wrong? When you find the one who completes you, it’s an explosive and amazing thing!

Wow! I always say I’m up for all kinds of romances. I’ve tried everything except interracial relationships and not because I’m against it or anything but because I don’t think I’ve come across any good one (or any at all). And since I started with MD Saperstein and Andria Large’s first book in their A Taboo Love series, I got excited in reading more. Lo and behold, after the boss-secretary affair comes in an interracial romance!

I enjoyed every second of Charlotte “Charlie” Fisher and Calvin King III’s story. They are both smart, funny, loyal, and loving characters and it’s very easy to like them. This is a bit heavier on the drama compared to Hey There, Delilah and although that book was lots of fun to read and I rated it the same, Charlie and Calvin’s taboo story is a 4.5 on a different level. There is a good mix of drama, a rather surprising and painful history, funny conversations, and re-appearances of previous favorite characters, Nick and Delilah (who I both adore).

I think MD Saperstein and Andria Large did a great job with telling us the story of Charlie and Calvin’s past and how both histories are relevant to how they are in the present. I didn’t know what I expect but there was some ”holy sht! really?!” moments in there and I liked how the authors managed to surprise me like that. Maybe it was predictable or expected but how they intertwined Charlie and Calvin’s story was impressive.

I also appreciate the side characters, their friends and families, part in the book. It’s good to read loving and supportive sets of parents for a change. Right?

Charlie and Calvin’s love story didn’t start off easily, there was some holding back from Charlie and persuasion from Calvin but once Charlie finally admitted her attraction to Calvin, things started to blast off. As much laugh I’ve had reading their verbal sparring, their horizontal workout is really, really hot and heavy.

Unmasking Charlotte has a little bit of each ingredients added to it making it a savory read.

Stars: 4 stars!
Recommended to: Taboo romances lovers, interracial romances, and a nicely done twist and surprise in the story.
POV: First person. Dual POV.
Series: Yes. But standalone.
Cliffhanger: No, not really. But if you count a preview on the next book a cliffy…
Extra Comment: I’m now intrigued what Parker’s story will be? Is he going through with ”it”?!

Unmasking Charlotte
by M.D. Saperstein & Andria Large
Five Stars!

This is another wonderful addition to the series. We were introduced to Charlotte/Charlie in Hey There, Delilah. She is the feisty, sexy, smartass, tell it like it is best friend of Delilah. We had only scratched the surface of her character and her life , she had so much more to tell! That is why she ultimately needed her own book. She as the title leads us to believe, has been hiding her true self and protecting the real her. She has become a product of the tragedies in her past that were beyond her control. It unfortunately has made her skeptical, unwilling to trust and unable to submit to love.
We now reintroduce Calvin, we had a brief encounter with him from book one. He is the best friend of Nick and the owner of the club where they all met. He is the epitome of what every woman wants. He is successful, smart, funny, handsome, oh and lets not forget honest and sincere. The women want him and the men want to be him! Charlotte has been fighting an inner battle since she laid eyes on him and I think it may be too much for her to deny! Due to her past experiences he should not be what she wants!
Calvin has always had a soft spot or shall we say HARD one for Charlotte. He can't seem to get this sassy, fair haired beauty out of his mind. She always appears to be a worthy adversary when they are together with in their circle of friends. He struggles with the mixed signals she sends and how she tends to keep him at a distance romantically. That all changes one evening and feelings, secrets and the past come barreling at them full force.
I must say that the foreplay and the build up were quite saucy!!!! Nicely done! Charlotte and Calvin are extremely explosive when together! The banter between the characters and their close knit group of friends is extremely funny and refreshing. The dialogue had me laughing out loud. The groups crazy escapades were very entertaining. The unexpected mystery and drama that were added to the story was a welcome addition that I was not expecting.
Be aware that you will not be left hanging and you also get the added bonus of a sneak peak into the characters from book one! I am so looking forward to Parker's story and another glimpse into this wonderful group of friends!
I was given this book as an ARC for an honest review

A complete disappointment. It started pretty well, with the heroine and the hero sharing a mutual attraction, but something in the heroine's past keeps her from giving in to it. Unfortunately, as soon as the reason was revealed, the story felt apart from the sheer number of coincidences, anticipated twists and an erotica plot maskerading as romance. For example, the heroine turns down sex on first date 'cause that would make her a hoe' ( her words, not mine ), but apparently mutual masturbation is classy enough for a first date. NOT. All in all, as soon as the heroine decided to put the past behind her, which happened in the blink of an eye, there was no more character development or romance, just two bessoted and very horny heroes who went for it at every chance they got. And finally, with some drama in the end to wake up any reader who'd fallen in a diabetic coma till then, they decided to call it love and live happily ever after. If not for the first 30%, I'd rate it with 1 star.

Charlie will have you giggling like a school girl

another fun and sexy read from this writing team. I loved Charlie and Calvin in Hey There Deliah and was happy to see them get their own book.

Charlie has been attracted to Calvin but a situation from her past has always held her back from pursuing it any further. Calvin is determined to break through her barrier and get that first date.

When Charlie finally puts down her guard and opens herself up to Calvin, the one thing she fears is the thing that ends up pulling them apart.

Although this book is ultimately about a very heavy subject, Megan and Andria handle it with finesse, inner weaving compassion and humor. I can't wait for more books in this series.

I was really looking forward to reading this book with Charlotte/Charlie as the main character. I absolutely adored her as Delilah’s feisty best friend in “Hey there…..Delilah” – which I choose to re-read just before digging in to “Unmasking Charlotte” – and I was glad I did. I am so pleased to say that this book did not disappoint – to partner Charlie up with Calvin – perfect.

Can’t wait for Parker’s story next :o)

I loved, Loved, LOVED, This Book!!!
Charlotte Fisher is a No Holds Barred, Tell it Like It Is, Fireball that now goes by the name of "Charlie" after a very personal tragedy changed the very core of her being. She is a 28 year old personal assistant to Eddie Dugan, at the top talent agencies in New York City and is best friends with Delilah Sampson. (From the book, Hey There Delilah)
Charlotte is very attracted to the very attractive Calvin King, the only problem is, she doesn't do black guys. Charlotte isn't racist or anything like that, it's just that she has been there and done that and for reason of her own, decides to go back to dating white guys.

Calvin King is a very attractive 6"5" black man with a body like Adonis. He is the "Black Sheep" of his family because his grandfather is a lawyer, his father is a lawyer his sister is a lawyer, his mother is a doctor and Calvin decides to open a "Sex Club".
Okay, not necessarily a sex club, in as much as the Hottest, Trendiest , Most Exclusive Club in New York City, which happens to allow Consensual Sexual Activity among Pre-Screened and Highly Scrutinized Professional Adults - Club Masquerade!
Calvin finds himself very attracted to the lively and sassy Charlie, but she wont give him the time of day. He finds himself breaking his own club rules in order to pursue her which is out of character for him because he is usually the pursue e not the pursuer.

Charlie and Calvin play a wonderful game of cat and mouse while developing a friendship. Charlie is desperate not to give into temptation and her mixed signals has Calvin confused as to whether he is coming or going.

Charlie and Calvin will have you smiling and laughing out loud in this book. Their journey is a fun filled one that you wont want to miss.

This book contains Laughter, Playful Banter, Hot Steamy Sex, and Kitten named Horse!

I recommend this book to everyone, you wont regret reading this book, It's Just So Good!!

I did enjoy this book, but only liked it. Did not love it as many others did. It was a decent and in some parts a humorous story. I liked both the H & h. But I felt from the first book that Calvin was cast as a big (6'5") kinda badass dominant HOT alpha. So when he screamed like a girl as he is scared of cats, it was funny but kind of just weird and felt off. While he was very like able and real, H wasn't really alpha. The writing was good, but the book kind of fell a little flat for me. It started out good and didn't go anywhere for awhile. And the heroine kept a big secret from him that others knew. It was her right to do so, and he reacted very badly when it came out - he was very hurt that heroine didn't share this secret with him, especially as all the other friends knew it. But his reaction seem over the top and just didn't seem in character for him. I ended up being disappointed with both of them and the drama and HEA at the end wasn't enough to offset the rest of the mediocre plot. I do plan to read the next book about Parker.

*5 Star* *Must Read* *Taboo Love Story*
*Couldn't put it down*

MD Saperstein and Andria Large have done it again! Must admit I fell in love with Calvin in book one and couldn't wait for this book to get here! Yeap- I author stalked this book!

This is a wonderfully written love story where you get to see a glimpse into what makes Charlotte (aka Charlie aka Pinky) and Calvin who they are today as adults. Going on the roller coaster of their "taboo biracial" relationship will keep you laughing and on the edge of your seat.
Some heavy topics are addressed such as racism and rape with enormous amount of RESPECT by the authors!!!
This book has it all!!! Hot as sin chemistry, visits to "the sex club", and suspense that will make your jaw drop! LOVED THIS BOOK!

READY for PARKER's story!! And fingers crossed... Monica needs a book too!!!!

I read this book via Kindle Unlimited.

After reading the first book in this series I had to instantly jump in and read this one. I was not dissapointed! I loved Charlie in the first book and loved her even more after this book. You don't have to read the first book to read this one but you will get some back story and have a deeper connection with the characters if you do. Charlie has gone through something horrible when she was younger but she is a survior and decides to move on instead of dwelling. Not sharing her past might cost her everthing. I highly recommend this book and this series. I like the fact there wasn't a cliff hanger and there was a beginning, middle and end to the story. Some books you finally get to the really good part and BAM the book is over, not with this book. I loved this book so much I had to dive right into the next one!

Good Read

This book was definitely different, not the way I thought the second book in the series would be. The first book was more light hearted. This one took on more serious issues, including rape, prejudice and an interracial couple, some parts of the book seemed unrealistic ( when there was a crisis, no one called the police?!!!), but I do like the fact that the author didn't shy away from some of the issues that can come with interracial couples. We also got to visit with Delilah and Nick from the first book. As with the first book, the characters are well developed even if the plot is unrealistic at times. I will probably go on to read the next book, although it deals with a topic I've never read before, romance between two men.

So beautiful, I'm ashamed to admit this is my first black/white romance, I've read everything else in between though, I loved Charlie so brave, most of us would have curled up in a ball and given up but not her, courageous throughout. she had such brilliant friends in Delilah, Nick and Parker, but my favourite was her Step-dad, Bron, what an absolute diamond of a man, just fabbo in my book. now too Calvin, all 6ft 5 of him, blimey now he is a cool glass of water, he was so gentle with Charlie until she didn't want him to be (ahem), honest and caring, I knew what what going to happen towards the end and it was perfectly done. Now Parker, a few surprises coming your way...onto the next book.

I loved this story, so much! After reading 'Hey there, Delilah' I was really looking forward to reading Charlie's story and 'Unmasking Charlotte' definitely did not disappoint. I fell in love with all of these characters immediately, and I love the character interaction (in this story and in between the stories). Charlie's storyline is based around some issues that I think are difficult to address, but they are handled beautifully by the authors. I cannot wait to read Parker's story!

4 SALIVATING FOR CALVIN KING STARS

Another good read, loved the characters and the storyline, plenty of nooky and a Mr Hotty McHottson hero in the form of Calvin King mmm hmmm tasty.

The reasons it wasn't a 5 star read for me was because it was slower to get going than the 1st book, also the H and h took a while to get together and get at it. Still loved it though.

I will definitely be reading Parkers story

They say that once you go black, you never go back. I am not completely sure who "they" are, but they obviously never met me. I guess that maybe I am an exception to the rule. I went black, and then I went back.
Yep, you guessed it! Interracial love is what authors Saperstein and Large are tackling in this second book in the A TABOO LOVE series. I don't really know how taboo that is anymore, but it's the theme and it is "taboo" to someone, so just roll with it... If you want to check this book out, it’s not necessary to read the first book, because they definitely stand alone, but I would recommend reading HEY THERE, DELILAH first so you can get to know the characters a bit more.

UNMASKING CHARLOTTE brings the same great humor and sexy romance that was laced throughout Delilah’s book, but there are also some heavy-hitting issues in this book – no, I am not going to spoil it for you, so you will just have to read it to find out!

Charlotte is a firecracker and she is determined to have things her way and on her terms. She is extremely guarded and has a few issues to work out. She wants someone to share her life with, but that definitely does not involve a black man – before you get all crazy, RELAX – she’s not racist, she has her reasons… That’s where Calvin comes in – he IS black and he’s more than willing to help her work out anything she wants, as long as they are both naked and all their naughty parts are touching… A LOT!

Calvin is a nice guy and he has his eye on Charlotte, but don’t try to pigeonhole him into any one-size-fits-all stereotypes.
First, let’s get all of the jokes and stereotypes out of the way. No, I am not a Cosby kid. Yes, I speak proper English, and no, that doesn’t make me a wanna-be white boy. No, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth, nor am I a trust fund baby. And yes, I am the “black” sheep of the family. Pun intended. I can kick it with my homies or do tea with the Queen, and would be comfortable in both scenes. I don’t do drugs, drink excessively, or eat fried chicken and collard greens for dinner every night. Although, there is nothing wrong with that, it is delicious. I consider myself to be laid back and care free until I am not. It takes a lot to get me there, but once I am there, shit you not, back the fuck away. Oh, and I curse… a lot…unless I am in the company of children or a female who is offended by it. I take my cues from her. I don’t do drama. Period. So keep that juvenile shit away from me. One other big thing you should know about me? I NEVER, ever, pull the race card.
Calvin is a keeper! It also helps that he is described by the author’s looking like Shemar Moore – OH EM GEE! That man is so smokin’ hot, I would drop my panties for him any day of the week and twice on Sundays. What? You don’t know who Shemar is? Well, then, LET ME EDUCATE YOU!

See, delicious huh? You are welcome! I know, I am getting waaaaay off track ☺

Calvin knows Charlotte is interested in “picking up what he is putting down,” but something is holding her back and he has no intentions of walking away without fighting for her affections. THANK GOD! Because when they finally get together, it is better than the grand finale at a fireworks display on the 4th of July!
I am anything but soft. When I have that right woman beneath me, she will always feel cherished and safe, but she will also know that I am the man, and that I am in control. With everything. When I have that right woman, laid-back, cool-as-a-cucumber Calvin no longer exists; alpha Calvin rears his control hungry, over protective, you are mine, head.
UNMASKING CHARLOTTE is a super sexy and sometimes funny read with lots of characters you really want to know more about. I quite enjoyed both books in this series and I can’t wait to read Parker’s story – it sounds like it’s going to be a totally different animal all together and I am looking forward to it… I LOVE ANIMALS!
