First of all, Karin Winter, how dare you? A CLIFFHANGER? DON’T DO THIS TO ME FRIEND!!! 😭😭
Now that that’s out of the way, WOW. Let’s start with a synopsis:
Sorine is a woman with a complicated past and history of kidnapping and abuse—rescued by her “father” who trains her to be a ruthless weapon. Zane is an ex-Navy SEAL who owns a security firm and they find themselves on the same missions multiple times before Sorine realizes that her history and Zane might be intertwined. After pursing him, they blossom a slow-burn romantic relationship without Sorine revealing the extent of what she does as a job. The line becomes blurry as her feelings for Zane grow stronger before she finds herself on a rescue mission against the Mexican Cartel and she has to decide what’s more important—the job or the man?

If you know me, you know I love a book with good banter between the FMC and MMC and this book delivered!! Sorine is witty and a smartass, Zane gives it right back to her and it makes their sexual tension HOT 🔥
The romantic side of the book is slow burn AF.
The military-organized-crime side of the book is ACTION PACKED and leaves you on the edge of your seat. THEIR adrenaline was rushing? MY adrenaline was rushing!
The plot itself is pretty fast paced, every chapter ending in something that leaves you wanting more (yes, I read this in two sittings,) but the book REALLY picks up about 75% of the way through. My eyes were BUZZING reading the last quarter, HOLYYYY 😭
Sorine is such a strong and badass FMC, her backstory drew tears from my eyes and the way it came into play in the back half of the book was absolutely perfect. Is she ruthless, a killer, determined to not fail a mission? Yes. But she is also a human with morals—especially when it comes to children, and reading through their mission together was very touching. I am also curious about her dad and was hoping to hear more about him before the end of the book.. I suppose I will wait for book two!
Seeing glimpses of Zane’s past was very touching as well and added to his character. I do find it unbelievable that it took him up to THE last page to realize Khaos was a woman, but I digress 🤣

I am excited for book 2, this book was excellently written and my first read by this author. I will definitely be checking out more of her works. I highly recommend this book! Add to your TBR immediately!

Thank you to Karin Winter for my ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Guaranteed hit for fans of all things military and organised crime, this dark and action-packed novel expertly combines suspense and romance. The story had me hooked from the very first page. I've never read anything by this author before and having enjoyed this book, I'm really looking forward to reading her other books. Be sure to check the trigger warnings before reading as this book touches on some pretty heavy stuff. The constant action keeps you on the edge of your seat and the tension between our main characters is sizzling. The banter is top tier. Character-wise, there's many fascinating characters, especially when you look at their backstories and at how they deal with their trauma. The book ends on a cliffhanger and I cannot wait to read the next instalment in the series.

I loved this! It’s enemies to lovers, secret identity, military romantic suspense and it’s a slow burn within the romance. It ends on a cliffhanger too. This had me hooked since chapter one! I love action with my military romance books and stuff. This has pretty heavy deep PTSD moments for the FMC Sorine, so be careful of that but I totally recommend! I can’t wait until the second book too.

I really enjoyed the story and the ping-pong sassy attitude between Zane and Sorine.
The thing i didn't like, was the writing style. The way it jumped so much back and forth in time, confused me at times.
The cliffhanger at the end...... RUDE! I need to know what happens next!

I give this book 3-3,5 stars. The story in itself was great! Zane and Sorine and their chemistry was good! Their missions was great, but the overall writing style was very confusing! There where a lot of times where I was SO confused on where they were or what happened, was it the past, was it the present and I didn’t enjoy that.
But to end the book on such a big cliffhanger was a move! 😂 I need to see what happens next! 👀

4.5 stars. I love a book that exceeds expectations and this book delivered. if you loved the MindFu*k series, Leave me behind or the movie Mr and Mrs Smith, you'll enjoy this book. It had me hooked from chapter 1. The pacing was perfect. duel POV, psychological mind games, romance, light spice (but i appreciate the slower burn for book 2). Well written, with quality character building and plot that keeps you guessing. Be warned cliffhanger ending that will have you hanging for book 2. fast read so I highly recommend 👌

This was a well written and engaging story. The characters were compelling and the trauma they endured created realism and nuance. The blurb does a good job of setting up the story so I won't repeat it.

The stress and guilt Sorine feels throughout the story for having to play two roles in Zane's life is interesting. In one, she is an shadow elite assassin who proves to be a huge challenge for Zane and his team. Additionally, to get close to Zane in the interest of obtaining key information regarding her avowed person of revenge, she plays the role of "adventure travel agent" and immerses herself into his normal everyday life. As she gets to know him, her feelings grow and having to keep her true nature hidden creates tremendous conflict.

Zane, for his part, is intrigued by the ghost assassin as a formidable advisory. He too grows feelings for the alias Sorine as they begin dating and eventually she wins his trust enough to get into his home so as to find her desired information. Zane senses something is off with both roles Sorine is playing but he ignores that uncertainty due to his increasing feelings.

The tension created between both characters makes for powerful reading. My issue is in pacing. I felt that too much time is spent with Sorine's guilt and Zane's willful ignorance. For this reader, it slowed the plot too much. I felt that the author had sufficiently established the inner turmoil Sorine and Zane feel earlier in the book and could have devoted more time to action scenes or more background on each. Especially Zane. I suspect this was done to create additional books within the series. Which is fine and I respect the need to get to the cliffhanger ending. I think more focus on Sorine's relationship with her mentor or adding depth to secondary characters. Thus the 4 stars.

This was a good book and a worthwhile read. I will definitely be reading the next book with great anticipation. I definitely recommend this book and this author in general. She has a large catalog of other books and series that I would also recommend.

Ruthless Protector" by Karin Winter is the first installment in her new Storm Security series. This enemies-to-lovers, action-packed romance immediately draws readers in with its complex characters and thrilling plot, leaving them eagerly anticipating the next book.
Characters and plot
The story follows Sorine Hawthorne, a 24-year-old travel guide also known as Khaos in other circles. Sorine is a survivor, shaped by past trauma into a formidable force driven by a desire for revenge against those who harmed her. In pursuit of intel to locate one of her targets, Lordsayer, she encounters Zane Mercer, a 34-year-old former SEAL and the head of Storm Security Company. Zane's company handles executive protection and hostage negotiation, but also undertakes secret military contracts for asset retrieval. Sorine believes Zane holds the key to finding Lordsayer, so she devises a plan to infiltrate his life and get the information she needs. This leads to a cat-and-mouse game between Sorine and Zane. However, as she spends more time with him, Sorine develops unexpected feelings, further complicating her mission. The book is filled with action, adventure, secrets, and lies, keeping the reader engrossed from beginning to end.
Themes
The novel explores themes of revenge, retribution, overcoming trauma, and the complexities of love and trust. Sorine's journey is one of resilience and determination as she navigates her two personas and confronts the difficult choices that arise from her growing feelings for Zane. Zane, a morally gray character, is also revealed to be more than meets the eye, making the dynamic between the two leads captivating.
Overall impression
"Ruthless Protector" is a captivating and thrilling read. The writing is engaging and easy to follow, making it enjoyable for readers who appreciate strong, independent heroines and military romance with a touch of danger. Be prepared for a cliffhanger ending that will leave you counting down the days until the release of the next book.

This is definitely a book you won't forget or be able to put down. Sorine hasn't had an easy life and still has recurring nightmares of her past life. She was lucky enough to be rescued by her now adoptive dad who taught her well. Becoming what she is now hasn't been easy. Having a life built on lies and half truths. Keeping herself from any true friends or romantic relationships, until Mia became a constant but even she doesn't know the true Sorine. Zane has worked his whole life to break free of his father's influences. Becoming a Seal and then opening his own security company has come with its own disadvantages. He keeps a lot of himself hidden but now he has a new enemy and he needs to end him. Both characters are strong individuals who won't back down. Both mission orientated and always reevaluating scenarios and having backup plans. What will happen when they are in each other's crosshairs. Will the mission always be a priority. Can either have a normal life. What will happen when sometimes not everybody is who you think they are. Is the enemy really an enemy. This story is full of twists and turns that you don't always see coming. The steamy parts of the story are exactly that steamy, but also a little bit of vulnerability breaking through. The triggers in the story are not easy to read and can be very unsettling. I loved everything about this book and then I was totally shocked at the shocking final scene, totally cliffedge cliffhanger. I really need the next book in this compelling story. Karin has totally given her all to this story and thank you for such an unexpected hard hitting story

Oh. My. Goodness. This book is exactly what I needed!!! I thought that this book was really really good and I need book 2 IMMEDIATELY!!!! I loved the writing style and it was super easy to follow. I loved the idea of the FMC not being the 'damsel in distress' and who's really strong and independent. Don't give me wrong I love the occasional 'damsel in distress x big macho man' trope, but I think this was refreshing. I highly highly HIGHLY recommend reading the trigger warnings!! I don't have triggers per se but there were some parts that made go ...yikes.

Sorine is the FMC and boy howdy does she have a past. Her past is extremely dark and she has a vendetta to get the revenge she deserves, but in order to get the intel that she needs, she inserted herself into the life of Zane Mercer. Zane is your typical Armed Forces, very strong, VERY good looking, and extremely smart. He is the leader of his unit in a security company that he inherited from his father who also is a P.O.S. for sure. He goes on these missions to obtain things for high paying customers, but someone just keeps getting in the way. This undercover agent who is conveniently going for the same things always shows up and is making his missions fail. While his relationship with Sorine is delicate the banter between them, easy conversation, and the spice of course made this book so much fun to read I highly recommend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Explosive action, sizzling tension, and a heroine you’ll root for!”

Ruthless Protector is the perfect blend of pulse-pounding suspense and red-hot chemistry. From the very first chapter, I was hooked. Sorine is a fierce, complex heroine on a mission for justice, willing to risk it all—even if it means going toe-to-toe with Zane, a brooding, alpha ex-SEAL who runs one of the most elite security firms in the world.

Their first encounter? Electric. Their rivalry? Deliciously intense. Their chemistry? Off the charts. 🔥

But this isn’t just about the steam (and believe me, there’s plenty). Karin Winter masterfully weaves in secrets, betrayals, and high-stakes missions that had me flipping pages into the night. As the layers peel back and Sorine’s true motives surface, you can’t help but wonder: will love survive when trust is the ultimate weapon?

This book has:
• 💥 A badass, revenge-driven heroine
• 💪 A possessive, powerful protector who can’t help but fall
• 💣 Action-packed missions and jaw-dropping plot twists
• 🔥 Rivals-to-lovers heat with edge-of-your-seat suspense
• ❤️ A dangerous love that’s worth every risk

If you love military romance with brains, brawn, and burn, Ruthless Protector delivers in every way. Buckle up—Zane and Sorine are a thrill ride you won’t forget.

Oh. My. God. I don’t even know where to begin. This book guys.., wow.
The story of Sorine and Zane is twisted, healing, confusing, heartbreaking and heartwarming. They both carry deep traumas, and have been dealing with it by pressing forward, Sorine in search for revenge, and Zane just going through the motions without any cause other than his company. When Sorine finds the name of one of the men who hurt her in Zane’s files, she plans to seduce him to get access she needs to exact her revenge, but she never planned on developing actual feelings or care about him. Zane finds Sorine interesting, and he’s drawn to her in a way he’s never been before.

I liked how strong and confident Sorine was, but I loved when her true colors shone through when she was with Zane, and how her vulnerability showed, because I don’t think it would if she didn’t feel safe with him. I loved their banter and humor, and how it also transferred to when they were Khaos and Hawkeye.
This was an easy 5/5 ⭐️ read, and now I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book, I mean that cliffhanger… 😮‍💨

I really recommend this book, but if you choose to read it, please read the content warning in the beginning of the book. This story deals with dark themes, such as: PTSD, flashbacks and panic attacks, sexual assault and r*pe, trafficking and more. Your mental health matters ❤️

Ruthless Protector is the first book in Winter's new Storm Security series. Be forewarned, this one ends on a cliffhanger. The book centers around Sorine Hawthorne, a 24 year old travel guide who also happens to go by the moniker Khaos in other circles.

Sorinne is a survivor; her trauma has helped forge her into a weapon. She is driven to find the men who stole her innocence and tried to destroy her, regardless of the risk. On one of her secret missions, she crosses paths with Hawkeye. In public he is Zane Mercer, 34 year old former SEAL and the head of elite security empire, Storm Security Company. What most see is building security, executive protection, and hostage negotiation. Behind the scenes though, he and his "extraction specialists" have military contracts that work in "asset retrieval".

Sorinne believes he is the key to locating Lordsayer, one of the men who she will destroy, no matter the cost. But first she needs to find him. As she cannot breach Zane's firewalls to access the necessary files, she decides to pursue another method to gain entry - through the front door. Sorinne's plan is to meet Zane at a charity gala and try to woo him. If he invites her to his place, she can locate his workspace and copy his files in person. Turns out it is a little harder to gain access to his home than originally planned, and she needs to work for it. Multiple dates lead to spending more time with the man and learning more about him. She starts to develop confusing feelings for the man whose alter-ego is her rival.

This slow burn, enemies to lovers, military romance is packed with action, adventure, secrets and lies. It quickly captured my attention and kept me thoroughly hooked from beginning to end. I am completely invested in Sorinne's story and am sitting on the edge of my seat awaiting the next installment. I have read several of Winter's books and can definitely say this is her best one yet. I loved it and highly recommend checking it out.

This book completely consumed me—I devoured it in a single day and couldn’t put it down.
From the very first chapters, Ruthless Protector pulls you into a fast-paced, high-stakes world where danger, secrets, and undeniable chemistry collide. Sorine and Zane are compelling, layered main characters whose tension crackles every time they’re on the page together. Sorine, an undercover operative known as Khaos, is smart, lethal, and deeply guarded, while Zane brings that protective, alpha energy without overshadowing her strength.
The way their paths cross through overlapping missions is done so well, and the slow burn romance threaded through constant danger kept me hooked. Sorine’s past adds real emotional weight—her trauma is handled with care and depth, shaping her into someone formidable rather than broken. Watching her struggle between control, survival, and real feelings made the story feel raw and authentic.
What truly sets this book apart is the balance: intense action, emotional vulnerability, and romance all woven together seamlessly. And that ending? Let’s just say it left my heart pounding and me desperately needing the next book.
If you love romantic suspense with strong characters, hidden identities, and edge-of-your-seat tension, Ruthless Protector is absolutely worth your time. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next

Sorine and Zane🥰

Sorine Hawthorne is the best agent. Her code name is Khaos. With her step father Oliver, she do secret missions for anyone able to pay them. Search and rescue, hostage, weapons, you name it. She’s all mystery with her suit and carbon mask. But Sorine have a big secret. She was kidnapped by the Lordslayer and his friends at 12.For a month. Oliver saved her and trained her to be the weapon not the victim. She’s after Lordsayer and she found that the CEO of Storm Security, Zane Mercer, have worked for him so she decided to seduce him to get informations. It’s hard ,when you are deployed at the same mission , to keep your identity secret. Will she be able to not fall for Zane and keep her mission secret?

This is the first time I read a book from Karin Winter and I was hooked up after the first chapter. This is a story about redemption, finding peace and revenge. Sorine story is heartbreaking but she finds the strength to come back from Hell to get her revenge on Lordsayer. The secondary characters are useful for the story, no bystanders. And funny! I love Mia 🥰 She’s the best friend everyone dreamed to have. It’s the first book of a duet. So we will see how their story unfolds later… I highly recommend this book 5 ⭐️

Ruthless Protector is an incredibly intense and powerful read that grabs you right from the start with heart stopping action, beautifully written and engaging characters that will have you shedding tears, laughing and at times the chemistry between them will leave you breathless!
Sorine is a woman who is very much shaped by her past, she was abducted and abused at age 12, she was rescued by her "father", he has trained her into a professional operative and she is very, very good at her job, however she is also focused on tracking down and bring her abusers to justice. She repeatedly sees Zane, an ex-Navy SEAL Billionaire turned owner of Storm Security, on various missions she now has to find a way to get into his security administration system to find the details of one of her abusers. Now her secrets are becoming harder to keep from Zane the more their relationship grows, will they be able to hold on to their feelings through betrayal, lies, danger and control? This book does finish on a cliffhanger, cannot wait until the next book in the Storm Security series.

Okay let’s start with the first few chapters: a slow burn, loved the back story. When authors put in too much back story it kinda ruins it for me but this one had just the right amount and it helped build the character. I absolutely loved that.

The middle was spicy. But not to the point of this turned into smut. It was romantic, spicy and delicious. Loved the “ah crap” scene. That was the only thing I thought about the whole time during that chapter.

We can go ahead and skip to the end; loved loved loved the banter between them as a masked vigilante and security. Made it 100x better because the reader knows all the pieces. Saving each other while simultaneously wanting to kill each other was beautifully written. However and the only reason why this book gets 4/5 stars is the cliff hanger. That was so mean especially after the plot twist that came in. WHYYYY 😭 that made me so upset.

But can’t wait for the second one and definitely will be reading it. Thank you so much for the opportunity of being an ARC reader. I have definitely found a new author to indulge in.

I absolutely loved this book. It reminded me of the Mindfuck series, especially the revenge storyline, complex characters, and irresistible chemistry. From start to finish, I was hooked — I couldn't put it down and ended up reading it in one sitting.

The character dynamics were fantastic, and I really felt invested in their journey. The chemistry between the leads was palpable, which made every moment feel engaging and meaningful.

Only thing that I think can be improved is the lack of realism in some of the action scenes. I mean somethings can be overlooked because I don’t know any better. But some scenes such as when it’s just the MMC versus 14 bad guys with a guns. Making out of that alive is so unrealistic unless the bad guys are 10 year olds with terrible aim.

Also, there was a phone call scene that was undeniably cute, but highly unrealistic. It didn’t contribute much to the plot and felt more like a filler moment — a charming one, but perhaps unnecessary, especially since there were no big emotional revelations or action-packed stakes in the exchange.

I also wanted to note that content warnings were provided on the first page, which I appreciated. However, one was missing: animal cruelty/abuse. While the scene was brief and not graphic, it still made me uncomfortable and left me uneasy about what else might come up. Thankfully, nothing further did — but I believe it's important to include this in the warnings, as even short mentions can be distressing for some readers.

Despite these small criticisms, I still loved the book overall. The engaging plot, compelling characters, and the undeniable tension kept me on the edge of my seat. I’m beyond excited for book two and can’t wait to see what happens next!.

I have just waded through thirty chapters where a lot have been introspection, back story and a few action packed only to find there is no real ending. Sorine was abducted and abused for four weeks when she was twelve and rescued by a man she calls her stepfather. He trains her to be a weapon but she finds Zane on a lot of her missions. Zane owns a security firm but has a mole in his organization and has also had a bad childhood. In some parts you have to suspend belief as I don't care how good Sorine is at unarmed combat, wearing all black outfits, tactical vests, combat boots and a secure mask, when she fights Zane who is twice her size and spec ops trained he has to know he is fighting a female, especially when he has her pinned to the forest floor. I might be misjudging this story and I know it is book one of a series so it lays a lot of groundwork but sad to say some of the groundwork makes this very hard to read at times.

⭐⭐⭐

The story of Sorine (Khaos) and Zane (Hawkeye) both characters having troubled childhoods and secret identities as agents hired to work within security. The book started with Sorine trying to access information by hacking into Zane's computer in order to find someone that she needed to exact vengeance on. Because Zane had worked for the guy (a monster) before she believed and treated Zane as if he was a monster too.

There were some steamy scenes and a lot of fighting and violence. Please check trigger warnings before reading as some parts could be upsetting and include sexual abuse. It’s a slow burn and will leave you frustrated as a good one should. The plot is fast paced and the book finishes on a cliff hanger which is going to drive me mad! Looking forward to book 2 and finding out what happens next.

The entire time while reading this book all I could think about was "omg, when will he realized that the operative he wants to take out is actually the girl whom he might just be falling in love with.

This book ends on a cliff hanger just as he realizes who the operative Khaos truely is to him. We will need to read the second installment to see what happened.

I love Sorine as the main female character. She is such a strong individual who is trying to focus on obtaining payback at all costs for something that happened to her as a child. But unfortunately for her mission she finds out that potentially falling in love has some very serious consequences when it comes to missions.

It was a suspenseful book that kept my attention the entire time and now I need to know how book 2 in going to go.

To sum this book up quickly - Nonstop storyline.

The pacing in this book was perfect. There is ACTION, tons and tons of action. There is a slow burn romance, and enemies to lovers, found family, a FIERCE FMC (which I love).

Sorine is the epitome of trauma reborn. She went from being a helpless victim to a ruthless warrior. I loved reading her mind - how she saw things, how she planned, how she manipulated.
Zane is the perfect MMC. He's ex-military, special ops, smart, also ruthless, but then when he is drawn into Sorine's orbit, he is soft for her. And.... he's a billionaire, so that doesn't hurt.

Between the literal action for the missions these two find themselves in, the will they won't they, will Sorine get caught infiltrating Zane's securities, will Zane find out that she is Khaos...I could not put this down.

I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK. I cannot yell this loud enough. Karin pleeeeeaaasseeee. :)

I loved this book so much! The story reminded me a bit of the movie mr and mrs Smith with a twist.

The book grabbed me from the very beginning. I found Sorine's story so sad and also Zane has not had it easy as a child. It was heartbreaking, exciting and healing at the same time.

I stayed up way too long to finish reading this book because it was so incredibly exciting! I read the last chapters so fast, I have never read anything so fast, because I MUST know how the story was going to end as soon as possible. But there was the dreaded cliffhanger, It was to be expected from Karin Winter because she is the queen of Cliffhangers. The book stops at the point you've been looking forward to for the entire time.... So cruel and yet so clever, I can't wait to continue reading. Please bring me te next book real quick!

A great start to a new series from Karin Winter, but be warned, it ends on a cliff-hanger, which has left me excited and on tender hooks for the next book.
Two great main characters, strong physically and yet vulnerable with cracks from their past bubbling up in the mental and emotional levels. The dual POV adds to discovering the back stories for the two protagonists, entering their inner mental worlds, and intrigue as to how their stories and lives weave into an interesting mystery. The book ends on a cliff-hanger and left me wanting more, as well as curious and excited to read what happens next for both characters and what path book 2 takes after the revelation of book 1 ending.
As with Karin Winter's other series I have read, I found this book well-written, engaging characters that draw you in and a very enjoyable, exciting and intriguing adventure that takes you on an unexpected journey to what will happen next and keeps you engaged from start to finish.

Such a great blend of thrilling action scenes, interesting plot and sweet romance scenes.
This had some dark themes and flashbacks but I think they were handled well. On the whole this was an exciting read. I hope the next book comes out soon as it ended on a cliffhanger.

I must say that this is my first read from Karin Winter and I want more. This is a very complex story and as I watched the percentage go up on completion I knew I was going to want more. Which I absolutely at the end I was so aahhh that the next book is not out yet.

Zane and Sorine push and pull (cat and mouse) dynamic is so fun. The banter between the two of them was fun to read. The character development of these two was nicely done.

Sorine’s story is a very dark story but I love how strong she becomes. Then you have Zane. He is not who you think he is at the beginning. He is one of my favorite morally gray MMC. The cliff hanger leaves you definitely wondering what will happen next between them. What will Zane decide to do??? So much of the story is untold.

Look forward to Ruthless Lies. Please let it come out soon.
