You saw his work in Neon Genesis Comic Tribute ...depicting the truth about Rei with great sensitivity...wait, that's not the right word. What's the opposite of "great sensitivity"? Well, whatever it is, Tony Takezaki's got it, in this collection of all-new stories satirizing both the Evangelion you saw on TV, as well as some scenes that apparently never got aired! SEE! Eva as a 1960s TV show! SEE! Kaworu and Shinji's standup comedy career! SEE! Ritsuko's days as Gendo's student intern! SEE! Eva Units, flinging dookie! You'll see all that and more, because this is Tony Takezaki's Neon Genesis Evangelion !
Insanity, pure insanity. Lots of stupid gags thrown on to Evangelion but as a fan i liked it. It's stupid and doesn't make sens but it was entertaining.
But it's really for the fans of the show, for everyone else it would make little sens.
I found an online version of this by accident thinking it was a short little fan comic and not realizing it was nearly 200 pages, but by the time I realized I was only halfway through I was having so much fun I just finished the whole thing. Some of the jokes get lost in translation, but it all feels very much in character and the art style is essentially identical to the official versions of the characters. Clever and crass and genuinely had me laughing out loud a few times. Kaji and your watermelons, never change.
honestly i bought this thinking it would be a cool addition to my manga collection as a neon genesis evangelion fan but it was just full of super weird sex jokes that i believe got lost in translation. kind of a waste of money but oh well, perhaps i should have read the blurb. all around weird but if you’re into jokes about misatos boobs every two seconds u may like this book
the art style is cute but a lot of the stories left me feeling a bit like “Er, maybe I had to be there…” I did laugh out loud a few times more because it was so random.
"Tony Takezaki's Manga Parody: Evangelion - 'A Cruel Joke's Thesis'"
Tony Takezaki's Neon Genesis manga parody is a delightful take on the iconic Evangelion series. It certainly holds its own in the realm of humor and artistry.
One of the standout aspects of this manga is its humor. Takezaki's witty and irreverent approach to the Evangelion storyline consistently delivers laughs. Whether it's the exaggerated character expressions or the clever twists on familiar scenes, the humor in this manga keeps you entertained from start to finish.
Additionally, the art in this parody manga is commendable. Takezaki's style is distinct and showcases the characters in a comically exaggerated manner that adds to the overall comedic effect. While it may not match the intricate detail of the original series, it strikes a balance between caricature and homage, which is quite enjoyable.
Although it may not surpass "Raising Shinji Ikari" in my personal ranking of Evangelion parodies, I wholeheartedly recommend Tony Takezaki's Neon Genesis manga parody to fans of the series and anyone looking for a good laugh. It's a fun read that pays tribute to the source material while infusing it with a unique comedic twist that will leave you chuckling.
If you know original manga, animation and saw all the movies - you will definitely get the main point of all the puns and jokes used in this short manga parody. In 90% I was laughing, and just enjoying it as an extra. Definitely that is an “must have” for dedicated fans of the series. Otherwise, if NGE is not something you would fancy a lot - you might not fully understand the ideas hidden in this short book.
Just pure and simple fun. I found it very funny and entertaining. The humor might not me for everyone, but most of the jokes and the sketches hit for me. It was clearly written by a loving fan of Eva. The manga is worth the read just for all the meme material.
A very strange manga. I nails many of the themes of original anime from both the original series and the movies. If you've seen the show you'll find this very funny.
Definitely recommending this parody comic to any Evangelion's fans who has crude and dark humour. The perfect drawing of the characters helps a lot too. I think this comic might fall in the category of Doujinshi, but 100% more professional? Because it's being published by Dark Horse. I'm not too familiar with Takezaki's work or the Doujinshi world.
If you're able to enjoy Evangelion, you have to be a little wonky in the brain, and this parody will remind you why Evangelion (and awesome Japanese comics) is so effed up. It consist of several short stories that focus on some comic tropes or Evangelion's weirdness. At one point I was laughing out loud on Shinji's mental abuse and that's fucked up lol I'm definitely thanking Big Bad Wolf for bringing this comic to Jakarta.
