Having read '500 Miles' by the same author, I decided to do a quick recon mission and discover what else he'd written...I adored this one. 4.5 stars and from me.

Part of the LHNB event on GR, this story centres on Alex and Kurt, best friends since they were old enough to know about having friends. They spent every minute that they could together until during their teens, Alex's feelings began to change towards Kurt, and rather than have Kurt reject him, he decided to cool things between them. From being able to talk to each other about anything and everything, misunderstandings and a heavy silence between them became the norm unfortunately, and they grew apart...Alex having done his teacher training for kids with special needs, decides to get a job back in his home town, unaware that Kurt is also back in town running his own restaurant. I'll leave you to figure out the rest, but I was very happy at the end, and even though one part of the story must have been excruciatingly embarrassing for Alex (I'll mention gorilla and leave it at that), I loved Kurt to bits!!

Edit 9/6/2013. Having thought about it, I'm increasing my rating to 4.5 stars..this story deserves it!!

Let me put on my gorilla costume and tell you you're a moron

Imagine an old-timey vintage-Harlequin series of misunderstandings coupled with what can only be a traumatic brain injury, and you have the love story of Alex and Kurt.

Our narrator, Alex, tells us that he and Kurt had been friends since infancy. But by the time they reached junior high he figured out that that he doesn’t like girls “that way” and Kurt is it for him.

When Kurt was around, I didn’t need anyone else.

Throughout the book, Kurt points out many times that potted plants are more mentally nimble than our Alex. He's not wrong.

“You’re such an idiot.” (1)

Alex wants to know why Kurt would come and hang with Alex instead of all his many other friends, causing Kurt to arch an eyebrow and glare at me like I had just asked the stupidest question known to man. (2)

Eventually Alex, the butthead, figures out that he loves Kurt. They double date at the prom with twin sisters who they ignore completely, and when Alex asks Kurt why he didn’t get a hotel room with placeholder-girl-1, he smacked me in the back of the head and told me not to ask such stupid questions. (3)

Now, Alex, this genius, is going to become a Special Education TEACHER. He and Kurt go to separate universities and get so caught up in course work (not socializing, God forbid) that they gradually stop calling and texting each other every day. Apparently, Alex fills up his summers with course work too? And never goes home until he graduates? Anyway, one day, like magic, the genius graduates and gets a job teaching children with LEARNING DISABILITIES in his home town. Of course.

You’re an idiot, you know that, right? (4).… I was left to ponder what he meant.

Alex spies Kurt at the restaurant he owns, runs out like an adolescent, and goes home to cry himself to sleep. The next day they have an unbelievably irritating conversation, each accusing the other of cutting him out of his life, but poor, dumb Kurt still wants Alex, for reasons passing all sanity, and begins the ritual dance of I Will Suck Up to You and Shower You with Gifts Even Though You Are A Complete Unholy Nimrod. This culminates in a visit to Alex’s classroom, dressed in a gorilla costume, with love messages written on bananas, AND ALEX THINKS KURT IS MOCKING HIM FOR BEING GAY. Because that’s how you do that, the gay mocking---in a gorilla suit.

I gave him a blank look. “You don’t get it, do you?” he asked sadly. (5)

Finally, painfully, it dawns on Alex that Kurt still likes him that way, and they have a dinner date at Kurt’s restaurant, followed by a food fight, and then a period of dating that just… I can’t even. The stalkery love notes on the car windshield, the dedicated songs on the radio, the completely unnecessary (to anyone but Alex) “reveal” that their prom dates had been beards so the two of them could go to the prom together.

“I don’t understand something—“ I began. “Only one thing?” Kurt chuckled. (6)

But it just! keeps! going! This story still isn't over. How can it not be over? Alex probably drowned himself while brushing his teeth, but I don't know for sure because I am done. D-U-N. Done.

I made it to 80%, but then I had to lie down for month with a cold cloth on my forehead.

I've found a new favourite author! Just read Parker Williiams latest book 500 miles and adored it, and now having just read this lovely freebie for LHNB its confirmed exactly why I'll be auto buying future offerings from him. He writes beautifully.

This was Wonderful.Sweet, romantic, feel good, warm and fuzzie... You name all the good things a love story should have and this story has it. Yeah I'll admit you could find things to pick apart if you look closely, you always can, but in this case I don't think it matters because the two guys are so endearing and the story so engaging. I'm really impressed with these stories up to now and to think they're all free and written by super authors is awesome.

Not seeing what's in front of your face all along, misunderstandings finally righted, love lost and found... all leading to a satisfyingly romantic HEA. Oh that someone would woo me like that. Just gorgeous! Downloading all these ASAP.

Annoying, irritating, cheesy, and f*cking ridiculous storyline - love declaration in a gorilla costume in front of the hero’s class (he is a teacher)!!!....

.... non-communication, dishonesty, pouting, lots of retrospect, TSTL main character, whipped cream throwing, love song sent via radio, and only one sex scene at the end, and even that one is lame.

I ♥ this story so hard. I'm a novella snob. I admit it. In fact, up until too long I didn't touch them. After reading the blurb on this one though, I had to read it. Best friends to lovers. Second chance romance after years of having lost touch. This was right up alley. I was so happy when in the end it surpassed all expectations I had for it.

The love these two men had for each other was felt in every word written.

We felt the hurt they both felt when they lost touch. I must say for a novella- it didn't feel rushed or incomplete. I felt like I read a complete book. We were with them from childhood to adulthood. We were able to watch them grow.

I can't recommend this feel good story enough. I love when a book leaves me with a smile on my face. 5 Stars!

I also want to add- I read the new version that was professionally edited and has a new ending.

This is a really cute and sweet friends to lovers story.
Kurt and Alex aren't really alike but that doesn't stop them from being the best of friends all through their youth, but college and then life changes that.
I was a little confused that despite the real and very deep feelings they had for the other they both let time go by without really trying to figure it out. I wanted a better understanding of that, because Kurt especially didn't seem like the kind of guy to let him go so easily.
When they finally do find each other again, it's a really sweet trip down memory lane and I'm so happy it worked out for them.
It was a great prompt and it got a really sweet story.
And I have to add, any guy who makes his declaration on bananas deserves to get his guy.

I'm fangirling like crazy right now. Squeeeeeee! I can’t thank Parker Williams enough for writing this story for me. It was absolutely PERFECT! It had everything I asked for in my letter, and so much more. I adored Alex and Kurt. I think I need to find my own Kurt, he was just so sweet and wonderful *sigh*

So I pretty much loved every single thing about Lost Time, but the gorilla suit part about killed me. Like seriously, there are no words. It was just hilarious and awesome and totally perfect! That ending, too! So sweet! I had tears in my eyes. I do love a good HEA ;)

I also love that gorgeous cover! *swoon* They're both cuties, aren't they? ;)

Once more, thank you thank you thank you! I’m so happy and honored that you chose my prompt and wrote something so wonderful <3

When Alex sees Kurt at the restaurant after 5 years without any contact between them, he jumps up and runs out of the restaurant. The next day, Jake (who was at the restaurant with Alex) sends Alex a note mentioning that the owner of the restaurant (no name mentioned) stopped by after Alex left. Just from this, Alex immediately knows that Jake's talking about Kurt who must, of course, be the owner...

I'm really not sure how Alex could have made that connection. Just one glimpse of Kurt in a restaurant he's never been to and knows nothing about is enough for him to realize Kurt's the owner and the man mentioned in Jake's note?

I'm sorry to say that, but this story was not for me. The general idea was nice and sweet, best friends losing sight of each other and then meeting again and finally openly admitting to what was plain to see from the start. And Kurt was a really lovely guy.

However, I had a big issue with the things Kurt and Alex were saying. Because it just didn't feel authentic to me. At all. Recounting a personal memory of an experience several years in the past saying things like "his head bounced off the wall with a heavy crack" - that's just not how people talk in my experience. Because when you talk your mind is usually a bit jumbled up and doesn't give perfectly laid out accounts of something you experienced with every little detail still present. It felt more like something you would read or write than you would say. And not authentic direct speech is a big pet peeve for me, I'm afraid.

I also didn't really like Alex all that much. Not only because he's clueless (although he really is), but because he jumps to conclusions, blames other people for misfortunes he helped create, and is a bit of a hypocrite. He's supposedly grown up but still behaves like an adolescent so wrapped up in himself that he's never tried to adopt another person's perspective. Even when this person is the man he's loved for so long.

And then there were people introduced to the story, such as Logan and his father Jake, that obviously only served the purpose to reintroduce Alex and Kurt. And as soon as that happened they basically vanish from the narration. That degrades them from side characters to mere plot devices, and I really don't like that. I was also wondering what sort of special need kids Alex was teaching. And how old they were. Jack says his wife's dreams of a perfect family where shot when Logan was born, so it seems like something rather serious to manifest that early. But in the few glimpses of Logan that are shown he seemed a pretty "normal" kid. Maybe I just missed something here...

I liked the beginning, but the whole thing came apart for me about half way through. So I can't really give more than 2 stars, unfortunately...

Seriously adorable story. Parker Williams rocked this prompt! I thought Alex and Kurt's story was beautiful, and when I re-read the prompt... I was even more impressed with this submission. It was a great prompt, very specific, and he nailed it. The story covered a good block of time and the pacing is perfect. I loved the sweetness of the story, and I got a kick seeing the author's humor shine through. I could tell he had fun writing Alex and Kurt's story. How cool is that? Sweet and smart - it's a lethal combination.

The premise wasn't anything special -- childhood friends-to-lovers has been done over and over, however it was just a really lovely read that made me happy and brightened my day a little. It had its sweet moments, funny moments and facepalm moment but overall, it was a good read and a lovely experience. A few niggles would be a few spots of unnatural dialogue and a case of sticky, sugar overload (though nothing enough to make me vomit rainbows).

3.5 I liked these two, particularly Kurt and his protective streak all along. I did question why these two, who were so in sync with each other since kindergarten, would just let it fall by the wayside without saying anything or a confrontation. That seemed out of character. The gorilla scene was just adorable.

OMG, what a perfectly delightful and romantic story. This is the kind of story that I love the most. Where two people who are connected to each other through time and space and yet they become their own worst enemies because of their inability to communicate. This is the story of my life. Thankfully however, Kurt and Alex's story has such an amazing ending.... or is it just the beginning? I hope their story isn't over and that we continue to follow their lives.

Will, you truly have the heart of a poet and a romantic. I am so very glad that I came across this wonderful sweet story. I am looking forward to your future works and I know I will never be disappointed.

Thank you for making my afternoon. This is one story I will be reading again, over and over and over.

Loved this story!! We all know how we lose touch with friends from high school and how hard that can be. This author takes that to a new level and makes us sad for our poor guys. When they finally meet again I got so excited!! I really enjoyed all the things Kurt did to win Alex back. Overall good read!

I loved this story! Wonderful story about two boys who were best friends growing up together. They looked like the odd couple, because they were so different from each other but they never let that get in the way. I loved how sweet they were with each other. Oh yeah, can I put my order in for a Kurt of my own please! Anyway, I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a short, sweet, loving story.

This was sweet and cute and romantic and basically pretty wonderful. Two boys who loved each other (unknown to the other, of course) and drifted apart. Sure, I didn't understand why two people who felt so strongly about each other could let that happen but didn't worry too much about that.

What follows is lots of romance as Kurt looks to win Alex's heart by letting him know how much he cares and explaining some of the events in their past. Notes, picnics, romantic dinners, dancing gorillas with banana messages and radio dedications...perfect.

I hadn't heard of the dedication song so here it is....

We've all had the experience of losing touch with friends. Sometimes the time just slips away from us, and that's exactly what happened to Alex and Kurt. Mr. Williams does an outstanding job of conveying the hurt that Alex felt when he tried to contact Kurt. The inability to find him caused Alex to feel rejected. When they run into each other Kurt tries to make up his absence to Alex and goes wildly overboard. This is a character-driven story that has been re-written from an original short story; it has been expanded and a new ending added. What I liked most about this story is the way the reader can get the POV of both characters and understand their motivations and behaviors. While Kurt finds Alex to be stubborn and Alex believes Kurt to be aloof we know they are both blind to their own faults. A terrific love story and one that I highly recommend.

This was a cute friends to lovers story.
I liked it, but it felt too much like following a recipe.
* BFF´s since childhood - check
* Awkward HS times - check
* Fake Prom Dates - check
* Inevitable drifting apart -check
* Drama and basic misunderstanding - check - And here a separate note, they spoken every day, email back and forward for YEARS, yet after one phone call went wrong Alex didn´t even attempt a short msg saying "Hey u moron u changed your number?... send me your new digits" or something like that.
* Reunion 5 years down the line, all secrets coming clean and great confession of love forever and ever - check
And there you have it, the perfect instructions for a friends to lover story.
