9/2/25 I am bereft this is my last QSCK book and she's seemingly not even got any in the works? I'm too 😭 to even look. Xianxia is simply NOT MY GENRE - and QSCK leaned HARD into the tropes which ugh. But it was ... slightly mitigated by the fact that I felt it was a bit tongue in cheek/she KNEW. Which ... the fact that it was intentional - ARGH. But then there was that whole "savior of the world" thing - and the twist that she's "evil" only NOT. (Bit of an eyeroll to the soul fragment thing, although at least there was the hint of it - and I definitely DID want her back and them together, so there is that.)
Will I re-read it ? ... Actually maybe. But would I definitely be rereading General, Deng Hua Xiao, Malicious Empress, or Ill Fated Consort first/over it? Likely yes. Felt there were too many "this is stupid/plot hole/mistake" things - which again - tropey since QSCK does NOT do that in - at least not to this degree - in her other books. Argh.
But holy cow batman I cried SO MUCH near the end. [Sad for once I've got like 0 interest in the extras. At least the parents. I think ESP cuz the last ones are the tragic shit of her dad and the human woman - WHY BOTHER/END ON A SHITTY NOTE, MAN?!]
Plus her sacrifice thing - felt that was too rushed/glossed over. And she was INSANELY/bafflingly chill at what the "righteous sects" did too her. And the instigators etc not suffering any consequences. Grr.
