Decided to dnf this. I felt like this was merely a story about one battle scene after another: Rome decides to invade Britain, preparation for a battle, the battle, debrief after the battle, preparation for the next battle, the battle, debrief after the battle, and on and on it went. I barely know a thing about the characters. Character development? None at all. Sadly, I do not enjoy these types of books 🤷🏼‍♀️

This is my first read of one of Marc's novels, quite impressed and looking forward to the sequels. Some good characters supporting a good story.

Unfortunately not a good read

This book does not have any meaningful character development, an engaging plot or engaging writing. The characters will say basic things and then repeat the same thing in slightly different and boring repetitions 3-4 times. Historically it is frustrating to see that the author is having the centurion of the 2nd legion 3rd cohort 2nd century meeting with the leaders of the invasion when the Primus piles was not there and being given the more important roles. That would not of occurred. Rank and privilege were rigorously adhered to by the Romans. There is a lot of obvious mild insubordination that would not have been allowed as well. I did not finish this book because there was nothing interesting about the writing or the story to keep me going past a 100 pages. I tried to give it a chance. I was initially excited to try a new Roman historical fiction writer but have been immensely disappointed.

A great way to start a story !!

I'm very pleased to have found this author and to have enjoyed the first book in what I hope is a great chapter in Roman history. Getting to know characters and how they interact is as important to me as is the storyline. As a keen reader of this era of history, just got to ask why is our island immediately referred to as Britain ? just curious as that is quite a modern version and not usually used in Roman stories, but loved the first episode and will be chasing the next one

-All the chest beating about how disciplined and well-trained the Romans were was a little tiresome. This would be OK if the never-ending accolades happened between newbies in the Roman army, but these repetitious meanderings were between senior Roman ranks – guys who would already know those characteristics from experience. However, despite that yawn invoking material, the characters were engaging and interesting. That alone is worth giving the next book in this series a chance to redeem the first.

a good page turner

Usual good tale and well described characters. Like many books I have read lately the ends always seems rushed.
But overall enjoyed it although in this modern world you always get a PC element.
A good fictional tale to pass a few hours.
