Jeff Probst is the multi-Emmy Award-winning host and executive producer of the popular series "Survivor."
After years of young fans asking, "When are you going to do a Survivor for kids?" Jeff took his wife's advice and created a children's adventure series based on Survivor -- where the kids are the ones STRANDED.
After spending days stranded on a deserted island, step-siblings Vanessa, Carter, Buzz, and Jane are again lost at sea when the currents drag their rescue boat away from the rescue helicopter. They wash up on another island, but this one is home to a small tribe of Pacific Islanders who don't want contact with the outside world, and the only way they can get to the boats that can get them off the island is to run the Raka Nau, a coming of age ceremony/race across the island/obstacle course to choose the most worthy from the teenagers of the tribe.
The relative realism of the first Stranded books have been abandoned for something that's more like a post-apocalyptic Hunger Games/Maze Runner adventure. The characters are still interesting, and you can't help but be pulled into the plot, but it's a definite departure from the first three books in the series.
Usually I really like this series but this book was really confusing and slow for me. I prefer it more when they are roughing it unexpectedly, which they were, but this time there were others. Even in the beginning of the book I was extremely confused, and I still don't understand how they got on the island. That isn't the only thing I'm confused about, though. For whatever reason, the whole book was pretty confusing for me. I can't put my finger on why exactly, but I do know that I feel the writing style was slightly different. I'm probably just being delusional though. I didn't enjoy the random event and am confused on why they started participating and what was going on. Overall this book just really confused me and I prefer the 3 original ones more. I will still read this series, though.
And Jeff Probst does it again! But on a new and so much more unique island. I don't know if the Nukula was basesd off of something real, or made up, but I am just going to say that this was such a great creative decision! I mean, the culture and traditions of the Nukula are so investing, and I want to learn more! Jeff completely switches the plot from the first trilogy, alone and lost, to surrounded by people and able to get by survival-wise. And this idea of the great race for their freedom, it's a great theme and I can't wait to read the next one! :D
Picked up the next trilogy in Probst's survival series for kids. The saga continues for the blended Diaz family. It is another island and the adventure continues.
It was a good start when they end up on the new island and see that there, not the only people there they get a little scared and a little relieved. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
As a huge Survivor fan, I had to read books written by Jeff Probst! Someone gave me this book (knowing how much I love Survivor) and it’s actually the 1st book in a second series about these 4 characters. It was fun and exciting, but still a kids book. I’ll be passing it to my daughter now (another Survivor fan!) Definitely want to read the other 2 books in this series and would also love to read the 3 books in the first series!
I really liked this book because they started off this new series with the same characters as the last series. This book is also very nice because to understand this book you don't need to read the last series. I would recommend that you do read the last series because they were great! In this book nothing really happens that is too exciting because they start off about the characters again. In this book they are still on Nowhere Island but a brutal storm rolls in and sweeps them off in the boat to another island. Here on this new island they find other humans. Although these people don't speak English and when a plane comes over the island they try to hide from it rather than wanting to be rescued. I really enjoyed this book because of how it leaves off from the last series and I also like all of their new challenges they have to overcome. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and surprise. The age range of this book I think would be 10 and up. I hope you read this series they are great books!
I liked this book a lot because I like survival books. Forbidden passage is part of the Stranded series of books. The series is about 4 stepbrothers and sisters who get stranded on an island and have to fight their way off the island to get back home. This book is about the brothers and sisters adventures after their boat gets swept away and they end up on a new island. They try to get rescued when they see a plane but they are taken by a man who lives on the island. He takes them back to his camp and tells them they don't want people on the island or to be found. The only way to get away is to run the Nukula challenge race. They have to race against the people of the island and they have to be one of the first 4 teams to finish the race in order to be rescued. They have to overcome many challenges during the race and risk their lives and battle with the other teams. Near the end of the race one of their teammates gets captured.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good plot twist and likes adventure stories.
Forbidden Passage is a new series by Survivor's own Jeff Probst. Geared to middle schoolers, Forbidden Passage takes Jane, Vanessa, Carter, and Buzz on a new adventure. Having almost being rescued by their parents after their first shipwreck, the kids find themselves on a new island, this time inhabited by the Nakula people. Their only hope of survival and rescue pits them against other island youth in a race to the other side of the island through the forest.
I like these stories even if they are for middle school kids. Well thought out and enjoyable for youngsters and adults.
It's very amusing that another series with these same kids has started, with them being stranded again. But, this book is a little more intense with other characters and a whole finishline and pressure and what not, so its a little different from the first series:)
My daughter and I enjoyed this next leg of the journey to get home. Glad to see Buzz, Carter, Jane and Vanessa still all working together, at whatever is thrown their way. Shadow Island is quite different than Nowhere Island and we can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
Once I got over how silly the premise of this sequel trilogy was and just how dumb the set up is, it's exactly what I expected the original trilogy to be like. I don't really like any of the characters but there feels like there's a goal and the challenges feel very survivor or hunger games like.
The authors stepped it up a bit with this newest installment in the Standard series. This time around they are giving it a bit of a Lord of the Flies feel. I like it and am looking forward to reading to the rest of this series. Great for grades 3-6.
