Rose
A sweet novella about a young lady who never knew her father because he left her mother before the girl was born. And so she grew up not trusting any man. I truly enjoyed this story.

Too short
It was a quick read that draws you in. It'll make you feel and leave you wondering whether it's going to be good or if you'd rather delete it. Don't it's good.

Painful and slow start, improves greatly midway until, ugh the end
First part of story focused too intently on Rose, her mother and father, 'The damn scoundrel'. (Description was repeated so often, would've made great drinking game in my misprint youth.) Unfortunately many of family's character descriptions, biases and past history are constantly restated. One plus, mother rapidly exited story so no more repetitions of her thoughts, etc.
I was about stop reading when secondary characters began to appear. Sudden improvement. New characters were succinctly detailed, dialogue became less stilted, and eventually most of same refrains dwindled. Unfortunately Rose's distrust of men continued to be restated. And every character in book mentioned father's looks, arrogance, narcissism several times.
Still pace and plot takes off when hero decided to pursue Rose. Last of trio of men who claim to love her. Rose must choose who to trust when she's reason to distrust all. This wasn't big mystery, but the subplots added interest.
End was a bit theatrical for my taste. But the Epilogue- new melodrama and angst was unneeded- and unfortunate note to leave with. 2 stars

Good story, not so good writing
The plot was interesting if bonkers. No viscount would abandon a wife without an heir. Etc. Etc. But i was willing to overlook that. The love between The main characters is rushed and not really believable. And the last plot twist just silly and a total afterthought. Could have used those pages to develop characters better.
