He must find a way to soothe Jamie’s pain and earn his trust. Even as misunderstandings threaten their tentative connection, they’re determined to hold on to each other—and hope the magic between them will be enough.

Jamie is very sad. He’s just lost his mother, who was his best friend, and he’s not doing well. On the night he completes the sale of her house, he goes to a bar to forget for a while.

Davis is a happy go lucky guy, who hasn’t had an easy life. He’s at a bar celebrating a new life when he spies the sad man in the corner.

Call it Fate or Serendipity, but Davis ends up “hitting” Jamie with his car and the two end up at Jamie’s apartment later that night. In the morning, both recognize their attraction for what it is, but Jamie isn’t sure he’s ready to act on it.

Davis doesn’t give up and in the end Jamie is very happy for his perseverance.

This is a very short story, but it tells a lot. It’s hard to rate these types of stories, because ultimately much has to be said in a short amount of space, but as compared to other short stories, this is a nice one.

It’s very sweet and sentimental. Some may object to the “insta-love” but it totally works here.

I would have loved to see more of their relationship and the sex is only hinted at, but overall I enjoyed this story.

I give it 3.5 of 5 stars.

This was a cute, sweet short story. It’s sexy with no real sex.

Davis decides to go to a bar with his best friends to celebrate the birth of his nephew. At the bar he is immediately drawn to a man sitting by himself. Jamie comes to the bar to drown his sorrows. He is still knee deep in terrible grief after losing his mother a few months before. He’s having a terrible time moving on.

Sneaking peeks at Jamie all night, Davis decides he better head home because he’s been up all night with his sister. He wants to approach Jaime but Jaime is exuding, STAY AWAY vibes. A chance meeting in the parking lot brings Jamie and Davis face to face after Davis accidentally hits Jaime with his car while pulling out. Understandably, Jamie is enraged and in a lot of pain. For Jamie his attraction comes a bit slower since he’s dealing with being in pain. Davis decides to drive Jamie home because he feels so guilty about hitting him.

Davis ends up falling asleep on Jamie’s couch. You start to see Jamie’s attraction blossom. They end up kissing but Jamie feels like he is in no way ready to be in a relationship since he is still grieving. He pulls away from Davis and Davis leaves feeling rejected.

A week goes by but both men can’t get the other off their mind. They want each other, they want to get to know each other, they want to see what could happen between them but in order for that to happen Jamie has to let go. They end up meeting back up, talk things out, and give it another chance.

This ended as a HFN, which is understandable due to the fact that this was a really short story. Jamie and Davis have all the workings to be incredibly hot together and I wish the author would have delved more into the physical relationship between the two.

I did like this story. It’s hard to review stories like this because what I read was good but I wanted to see the relationship develop more. Overall, this was an enjoyable, albeit forgettable story.

Let me start by saying, this is a very simplistic book. Too simplistic for my taste. Jamie is depressed, not wanting to deal with people, and the author doesn’t give me a good-enough reason to feel bad for him. His mom died four months ago – Four months ago. Why hasn’t he recovered in that time? For me, I kept waiting for something else, something that would have proven why he was behaving like he was. If there was a reason his mother’s death really took him down so far, I needed more information, a more intense attachment to his needs.
Then we have Davis – Acts like a twink, doesn’t think before he acts, and pushes straight ahead even when the signs ahead scream “danger, danger!” Neither character acted ‘smart’ in my opinion. Jamie’s personality flipped back and forth between sullen and ‘I like him, oh, I shouldn’t’ so much I yawned, actually.
This is a short book, but it still took me almost two weeks to get through it. There wasn’t anything that made me want to turn the page.
Now, all that said, let me say I think if the author took it, reworked it, and really filled in all the gaping holes, it could be a really good book. The potential is there – it’s the one thing that did keep me coming back to it time and time again instead of just giving up. But the potential was never fulfilled. The past was ghosted over, with no real emotion attached to it, and I felt in the end that Jamie would continue to hurt Davis over and over again, not because he wanted to, but because to me – whatever his original problem was was not resolved. And he was too attached to feeling bad.

Reviewed by Brandilyn for Prism Book Alliance. So, I read Davis's Magic by Lisa Clarke as part of my pre-GRL flurry, but I never managed to review it. I wrote a few notes, but that wasn't enough to bring the story back to the forefront of my mind. I decided it was best to re-read Davis's Magic prior to review. It was a quick read both times.
